      A cool tip. Try to get red bananas. It may or may not be available in your country. If from my place Kerala and it's a really good one. Tastes good and helps in maintaining cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Really really really good. I know you might want to try it and if u don't get it then I'm sorry. It doesn't get to a lot of places

    It might be a bit excessive but I started putting my receipts in Google Sheets to record the price of things and how much they cost per piece/kg/l. Went shopping at different grocery stores and saw the difference. Also interesting to see the prices rise or go down.

    As someone who LOVES legumes as well, if you're a student on a budget, I highly recommend that you buy them dried and cook them in big batches yourself. You can then portion them out and keep them in the fridge or even the freezer. You'll save a ton of money (and the environment : ).

      Yep! I used to just soak huge bags of dried chickpeas in my dorm overnight and then set them and forget them in my crockpot the next morning and had perfectly cooked chickpeas by the time i got back from class for like half the price if i had bought them canned

      I always make a big batch of beans and freeze the extra so I don't have to make them from dry every time. I just put them in my instant pot for an hr and they turn out perfectly

      I wish. In South Africa, dried chickpeas are so expensive compared to the canned version. Most other legumes are cheaper

    Aldi shout out is so appreciated because it's such a good place to shop on a budget for groceries! They also have weekly and daily specials so it's always fun to walk down that aisle and see what I'll find. Plus, literally the best place to get chocolate.

    About the weird banana flavour:
    This artificial flavour was somewhere created before 1950 and it is based on the gros michel banana. This banana was super popular (like chiquita), had a much stronger flavour and looked like a chunky banana (like a small plantain??). The gros michel was almost completely wiped out by a fungus and because it is hard to select desease resistand bananas (the ones we eat dont have any seeds anymore so the plants are kindof cloned. This results in a very small gene pool). I think that our bananas now are affected by a fungus again, but I'm not sure it this is still a problem or if the fungus was eradicated.
    Aaanyway, banana flavour is based on the gros michel banana and thats why we dont think it tastes like our banana.

      oh shit in thailand we have this breed of banana that is super short n fat and is way sweeter n with a more intense flavour than the one we have in italy (I'm a mixed kid).
      it may be that they're closer related to the gros Michael than the modern Western banana

      @@chrono4998 that's pretty cool! The gros michel still exists but if I remember correctly they're super expensive. Maybe the actual ones are sold in thailand, or maybe a more closely related banana. I'll definitely look into it!
      Edit: this is what I found
      Turns out that Thailand’s gluay hom tong (translation: golden aromatic banana) are the Gros Michel but I don’t know if the exact cultivar I ate as a kid is here. I think so, because I believe the Gros Michel is a clone. As for Cavendish here…I understand that the small variety of gluay hom is actually a Cavendish. It is not at all dominant or particularly popular in the local market. There are so many other types that most so-called gluay hom bananas - including the Gros Michel, are just a footnote - except during Chinese festivals where their perfect proportion and color makes them highly desirable for offering to the ancestors.

      In some african states (I don't remember which exactly), there is a big fungus problem currently and as you already mentioned the problem is all the plants are clones so they all are susceptible for this disease. So yeah, thats a big issue

      There's a really delicious variety of banana that grows in Hawaii, called "apple bananas". I don't know if they exist anywhere else, but Hawaii does not export them because they do not ship well. They are a little tart and have a fragrance that people say smells like apple. To me it doesn't smell like apple but yeah it smells different.
      If y'all are ever in Hawaii, go try some. They're so delicious

    Thanks for not being a prententious foodtuber and being realistic about shopping and cooking. A breath of fresh air in the RUclips cooking world. I’ve been substituting tofu into a few dishes as a cheaper source of protein too. Also check out chicken thighs instead of breasts, they may be cheaper and I prefer them the white meat anyways

    Another tip (especially as a fellow student in the Netherlands) is to visit the local fresh market. When things are in season, they are very cheap and that's important for students!

    I just want to say, you are truly the best. Neither me nor my bf (students) used to cook and this channel really helped us. You cook exactly the kind of meals we like and you use the stuff we like / that is accesible where we live.     Just yall are aware, grocery stores SHOULD sell those precut fruits and vegetables, but not for convenience. The reason is Disability Accessibility. Disabled folks with fine motor control issues might be unable safely dice a watermelon or a bunch of carrots for example, but still need access to healthy food and ingredients. It's not a "lazy person" thing, its an Accessibility thing.

    Hi! I'm disabled and I really struggle with cooking for myself, so pre-cut vegetables really help me be able to cook and eat. The biggest barrier for me in cooking is how long it takes to cut vegetables, so by eliminating that barrier it helps me eat regularly and healthily. They're definitely expensive and there's way too much single use plastic in all packaging, also here, so I don't disagree with your thoughts. I just wanted to add that pre-cut vegetables definitely have an added value for lots of people, even if they're overpriced.

      Thats a good point but if you struggle with that you could still get the canned versions or frozen ones instead since theyre usually processed into smaller pieces. Theyre cheaper and also last longer and are also very user friendly. I always supposed that fresh pre-cut vegetables was just for people who are rich enough to afford it but really frozen veggies are in my opinion most of the times even fresher the pre-cut 'fresh'.

      @@lyncxe yes, good point! I also struggle with opening cans, so unless I have someone to help me that's usually a no, but frozen definitely works for me. If I can get it frozen, I will. The main things i buy pre-cut are mushrooms and potatoes.

      Hi. I dont know what kind of disability you have, if it restricts you in terms of acuracy and hands coordination while cutting, or if it even dont allows you to use strong force. But my idea is, IF it is easier for you to use strong force then fine cuts to maybe try on of these cutting devices like this nicer dicer or some way cheaper off brand versions. There you put in the vegetable in once or in big pieces and force it trough a grid of blades usually by hitting the top of the box. The now cut vegetables fall into a container.
      Maybe this could work for you.

    love this video as a really comprehensive guide of ~versatile and cheap~ things. what I would add are some oils/vinegars/spices/pantry staples, maybe you can make a video about that in the future. I'm not a college student anymore and have figured out grocery shopping for myself, but I came for the food rating and stayed for the chill vibe haha. keep it up!

    Another one for protein: textured vegetable protein, aka TVP, it's extremely cheap, it comes in a dry packet, it doesn't need refrigerating, it keeps well, it tastes a little bit like ground beef (once you've added a couple base spices and herbs), and both per weight and per cost there probably isn't a better source of protein out there (it's also low fat, so you can throw some oil in with it for almost nothing, or don't)

    One I have to say which shocks me about European grocery stores, is how much plastic is everywhere, and that fact that you can't avoid, especially on produce. While in the US there is plastic covered produce, there is usually a bulk variant where you can use your own bags and avoid plastic.

      As an American living in Europe, I wouldn’t say there’s universally more plastic here. It really depends on the specific store/country. France, for instance, has banned plastic for many fruits and vegetables

      It's not the same in all of Europe, I'm from Greece and here for fruits and vegetables for example they are there on bulk and you get your own bags , grocery stores even encourage you to get your own bags

    In terms of fruit, I like to get frozen berries. In summer, you can get fresh ones and freeze them yourself but in winter, frozen berries can be cheaper (and more practical because you can store them longer).
    It also might be good to look for a farmer who offers weekly vegetable boxes. You go to the farmer (or a shop that cooperates with them) and order a box. You can usually choose between different sizes, depending on how many people live in your household. What you get are seasonal, regionally grown veggies that are usually even ecologically farmed.
    For eggs, I recommend getting them from a local producer. Local producers that don't mass-produce can ensure the wellbeing of animals way better.

      If you’ve got any kind of yard space (I know a lot of people don’t), blueberry bushes rock. I’ve got two planted this year in my backyard, and just those two will provide most of the blueberries I’ll need in a year (no one in my family eats plain blueberries, they’re just used for baking and cooking). My grandpa has around 4 or 5 fully grown blueberry bushes, and has so many berries he has to give them away! They’re basically zero maintenance once established, too.

      But I love blueberries too! Once I have the chance to get a garden, I will definitely try and plant some bushes!

    That "Fake Banana Flavor" is the flavor of the Gros Michel Banana. It's extinct in the wild, but enthusiasts still grow them in glass houses.

      Well no. That's just a myth. The Gros Michals tastes just slightly different to the Cavendish bananas we have in stores today. It does not Taste like the fake banana aroma. The aroma is just one component to all the flavours in a banana. It tastes fake because it is too extrem and too one sided. The aroma is cheap to make synthetically. (You can still order the Gros Michals online if you want a taste. They are grown in Kamerun f.e.)

    I have to admit that it’s so refreshing to see someone in the cooking RUclips scene who is grocery shopping at the AH, I can relate so much to everything you say!
    (I moved to the Netherlands from Italy two years ago, and I had to re-organise all the cooking knowledge that I have from my mom and grandma to the ingredients I find here, so you can imagine the struggle).

    Great Video! I would also recommend buying some things like onions in bulk - particularly from independent grocery stores - because you often can get a better deal that way compared to just getting three onions at a time for example. Also, independent stores (like ethnic grocery stores that sell fruit and veg) often will reduce the price A LOT near the end of a season of fruit so you can end up with great deals that you wouldn't find in large supermarkets.

    2:40 while most people might not want to so prepackaged meals/ingredients because of the cost, it's really good for people who have various disabilities or things like executive disfunction or ADHD or depression, or just hate cooking to the degree that if they don't buy prepackaged, they don't eat/end up with unhealthy takeout. So if you have a problem with any of those things, buying prepackaged might be the difference between eating something decently healthy vs a burger and fries for the 5th time this week. It's a necessary cost if it's a requirement for you to actually cook with it. If you don't have a problem with anything, then yeah, it's an unnecessary expense, but don't beat yourself up if you actually need it~

    When I was a kid, my mum (yes, I spell it mum I am Australian) would always make this simple yet amazing cheese bake. She would simply get some cauliflower, carrots and broccoli, chuck em in a casserole dish and then boil some milk and add cheese until it was a thick pumpkin soup-like consistency. Then she would pour it over the vegetables with salt and pepper and sprinkle whatever cheese we had on top. Then she would bake it until the vegetables were soft and the cheese was stringy and sometimes torch the top to get that beautiful golden brown. She would season it generously with whatever seasoning she was feeling (some days she added extra spice, other times she just went with the flavour of the cheese) and she would usually serve it with some meat (again, whatever she was feeling) drizzled with some leftover cheese from the same pot she used to pour over the vegetables and my favourite was always roast beef. This was so simple but to this day, the nostalgia in this dish truly holds it all together. Would love to see you try it!!!

    In the netherlands in at least bigger cities, there are weekly vegetable/fruit/flower markets. If you go on the last day and/or at the end of the day, right before the market closes, you can get a lot of good deals on produce! Once got like 1.5 kg of cherry tomato’s for 2-3 euro’s

    Kevin, the fake banana flavor is based on the variety of banana called Gros Michel. Previously, that was the most widely grown type of banana, but fungus caused that plant population to collapse. The bananas we have today is a variety called Cavendish.
    Different bananas taste different. There's a really delicious one called the apple banana that you can eat in Hawaii. I was told that they don't export them due to a short shelf life. They are so delicious. Since you love bananas, you should taste them at least once in your life

    Hi Kevin ! I just moved to mexico city for about a month or so, and I was very amazed by people complaining about the food price and yet they still eat expensive meat (beef and chicken) while I already buy fresh potatoes, canned beans and corns, dairy products (in here 1 kg yogurt is cheaper than 200ml flavored yogurt drinks) and off course eggs are unbelievable super super cheap, so thank a lot for this very useful video and I'm sure this video is good not for only students but also for everyone

    When I was a college student, meal planning and eating same stuff everyday helped me quite a bit.
    Oats with banana/ berries with mixed seeds and walnuts was my breakfast for 3 years. Weekends could be different.
    Eating simple stuff like dal (lentils cooked Indian way), rice, chicken curries, Indian style egg curries and cottage cheese and tofu curries, making my own flatbread and then freezing it were always good options for me. Also buying veggies and fruits from local markets makes sure that you buy local produce and cheap too.

    "Versatile" can be substituted for "Flexible" or "Multipurpose" in your case,
    You can use "Cost Effective" and "Bargain" instead of "Cheap" and you can swap "Favorite" for "Preferred" when the script calls for diversity

    I don't like going to the grocery store, but I'm obsessed with looking at the ads and coupons for the grocery store. So when I do go I can get the best deals. I find I save a lot of money just shopping the ads. Also I've found I prefer to buy high quality spice mixes than a bunch of cheap individual spices. Cause you can really taste the difference between high and low quality spices, but also I can't convince myself to spend 5$ a bottle for every spice I want to buy.

    Fun fact: The artificial banana flavour that you mentioned is actually based on a real species of banana that went extinct. In the past, however, there was a variety of banana that all of the flavorings (from chewing gum to milkshakes) are made to taste like.

    11:05 as a Mexican in Europe I tell you do not use the taco seasoning instead use some authentic Mexican seasoning which is chilis and about the rest is just tomato sauce 🥫 onion 🧅 garlic 🧄 my favorite chilies are chipotles, dry seeds from ancho chili can be really hot use ancho chilies for some fruity smoky flavour.

    I have to add something, which was a recent revelation to me:
    I have the exact same grocery shopping style as you, but i recently start going a lot more to farmers market for these same things, even if it means waking up earlier on a saturday. There are multiple reasons for thaT
    1) Local food
    2) a HUGE variety, way more than any grocery store
    3) fresher items
    4) cheaper than supermarkets, especially when bargaining
    5) even cheaper if farmers start to recognize you and you become a client they are happy to see
    I really highly recommend this to people, buy from your local farmers, and most stuff you will buy, will last at least 1 week anyway, so do your weeks shopping on your farmers day (here in Austria its on saturday, early in the morning)

    Canned legumes are great, but legumes are also easy to cook from dry using a pressure cooker. Just make sure to soak the legumes in water for a few hours and rinse them off before cooking. That will prevent farts.

    Dried legumes are so much cheaper, they take a little more forethought due to needing soaking, but dried lentils or red beans are often less than half the price of canned (depending on area of course).
    Also, hit up the farmers markets, they are often cheaper and better quality than supermarkets.

    Yeah those little seasoning packets are great in a pinch, but if you do have the money in the know-how I recommend getting a spice cupboard kind of the same thing with precut vegetables and pre-mixed seasoning packets it'll be a lot cheaper long run but if you're only making the meal every once in awhile I don't see a problem in a seasoning packet I still use them to make gravy and stuff like that.

    No wonder you love grocery shopping if you live in the Netherlands!! My family are Dutch but I live in England, and whenever I visit, I find shopping at Albert Heijn is SO much more enjoyable than walking around the many oversized supermarkets in England

    I live in the Netherlands as well and by far LIDL is the best of the best! And the market is always a great option, everything is way cheaper there. You just need to organize meals a bit more and know where the cheapest stuff is, but it becomes automatic very quick :D and frozen salmon for delicious recipes. Although I have to say, it’s all easier when you’re a good cook

    In my opinion the best tip is to shop fruits/veggies/meats at (local) markets and butchers. For me in Rotterdam you get a full bag of fruits and veggies for a price that would buy you 5 bananas in a supermarket. Also the Moroccan/Turkish butchers tend to be quite cheap (and also good quality) in comparison to Dutch ones, and for sure cheaper than supermarket meat

      Being an Indian this surprised me a lot..in India everyone shops from farmer market or vegetable hawkers as they are cheap, but in everywhere else I saw people buying packed and overpriced veggies fruits from supermarket

    honestly you can find amazing pasta for not a lot more than the basic stuff, and it's so much better. Even on the budget, that's one pantry item I prefer quality. Especially as it's still dirt cheap if you find the right brands.

    Hello, i wanted to ask you if you could do the
    national dish of Kosovo (Flia)
    *Side Note*
    This Recipe is for 6 People
    Here is the recipe:
    *Dough*
    1kg white flour
    1L Water
    1 Pinch of Salt
    1 Tiny piece of molten Butter
    *Filling*
    400g of Cream
    2 Cups of Schmand
    100g of molten Butter
    200 g of Natural Joghurt
    1 pinch of Salt
    1. Mix the ingredients for the dough until the
    consistency is a little thicker than the crêpe dough, add a little more flour or water if necessary until the
    consistency is the same as that described
    2. Mix the ingredients for the filling and season with Salt
    3. Now grease a round baking dish (similar to a
    springform pan) or a round baking sheet and spread
    the dough out from the edge to the middle in a
    radial pattern, spoon by spoon, so that a "sun" is
    created
    4. The filling is now carefully spread on the free
    surfaces with a spoon so that the entire bottom of
    the mold is now covered
    5. Now place the form/tin in the oven on the top rail
    at 250°C and bake for a few minutes until the dough
    is brownish, then remove the form
    6. Repeat the same, but this time spread the dough
    in a radial pattern from the edge to the middle
    where the filling was spread the first time. Fill the
    free fields again with filling (there where the dough
    was poured the first time). Side Note: This is a recipe for 6 People
    7. Repeat this until the fli has reached the desired
    size. Finally spread a thick layer of the filling on top,
    cover with a kitchen towel and leave to stand for a quarter of an hour
    8. Serve hot
    9. Flia can be mixed good with Yoghurt and
    Vegetables. This recipe is a bit complicated, if you
    have any questions inform me :)
    *If you do not have Schmand, you can do it yourself like this:*
    *Ingredients*
    200g of Whipped Cream
    2 Tablespoons of lowfat quark
    *Steps*
    *1.* Mix well and let it stay in your warm apartment for 1-2 Days *Not in the fridge!*
    *2.* Done. You can let it in the fridge and it will last for a week.

    I don't intentionally buy less things so I can go again. I buy fewer things at a time to ensure none of my food spoils. If i've been lazy and havent been cooking much, then i get hungry I have to use what I already have because I will still be too lazy to go shopping again.

    As for stores like Aldi and Lidl being cheaper, unfortunately not so much anymore. I used to buy my butter in bulk at Aldi, but by now their butter costs the same as the budget option at Alber Heijn.. If you want deals nowadays you really have to look and pay attention. We get weekly folders of all the supermarkets with deals and stuff. Unfortunately no coupons, so no extreme couponing here 🙈 Also, they trick people sometimes with the prices supposedly having gone down when it comes to the deals they offer, but then if you compare it to what the price was a few weeks prior, the price actually went up and the so called deal is the price it was a few weeks ago.
    I also feel kind sorry for those out there that struggle with mental limitations. My younger foster-sister for example, she's got a mental disability and we've been training doing groceries with her for years, but it will remain a struggle for her. For example, when she sees the word "deal" or anything like it on an article, she's immediately drawn to that and easily overlooks the fact that the deal is on the expensive and A-brand choice, and that the actual cheapest option isn't a deal but rather just a cheaper brand. And we don't even have to get started on price per weight or volume.. She will choose a 4-pack of toilet paper over a 10-pack just looking at the total amount, never realizing the 10-pack is actually cheaper per roll. Obviously someone is always with her when shopping, but I know there's enough people out there like her, that do not get the same level of accompaniment or social care and they fall into these traps all the time..

    Chicken breast is one of the best meats to buy not only price wise but also you can eat it at a bigger range of times due to the fact it contains less fats than red meats in my opinion and its also very tasty wether boiled, grilled, fried, it always has some good softness and taste, but throw that all out the window when roasting an entire chicken cus all its parts except the thighs become tasteless and have no good texture to them

    Potatoes are perfect for college students. Also rice---although I didn't use potatoes and rice much when I was in college myself. My grandfather's family members had potato farms in Colorado and one of them was a potato genetics expert. They have newly-discovered antioxidant properties.

    Have you tried grilled eggs? You have to try it next time you grill, put whole eggs on the grill when the temperature is not so high and wait 15-20 minutes. They are delicious!

    Pro tip for chicken breast (at least in the Netherlands) you can usually get a pretty decently sized bag of frozen chicken breast and it’s honestly not bad for things like pasta and stuff 😎 (btw really helpful video I loved watching it)

    About pre cut vegetables, not only are they outrageously expensive and bad for the environment because of all the plastic packaging, but they also go bad very quickly as compared to whole, fresh vegetables. Ever since I switched from them, I've saved a lot of tears (and euros) watching bags of julienned carrots and cabbage go bad within literally four days

    As a former broke college student, I can't believe he forgot the versatility of Pillsbury biscuit cans. They can be pizza dough, burger you buns, cinnamon rolls, pie/tart crust, quick waffles, dumplings. They can be flavored, fried, baked, steamed, boiled, cut stretched. Just such a great cheap product. Even if not Pillsbury, canned biscuits are great

    regarding the banana flavoring: its based on a strain of banana that has died by a fungus that has started to threaten the current strain of banana. These strains taste different, therefore the disconnect between the flavour extract and fresh one. The current strain is cavendish, the previous pre-1950's was Gros Michel.

    King guide: Tomato cans, cheap cheese, garlic and onions in your pantry, Then go tortiallias, flour or pasta and you can just make dishes appear. Burritos, just buy canned beans and have the spices in your pantry. Tomato pasta? Just be patient with your cooking or have fresh tomatos. Pizza? Have a quick recipe with flour, water, yeast and salt for the dough and top with your seasoned tomatos and cheese. Also potatos open up infinite possibilities. So have the initial cost for varied spices. Then base up on tomatos, pasta and potatoes.

    Well I'm from Kerala and tbh. We get the fruits during seasons cuz they are way more non pricey and fresh. We grow our own sprouts, make buttermilk and yogurt by ourselves and make superb dishes out of them and curries especially. I hope you try south indian home food
