I've found any time I want to shape PVC, it takes seconds to dip it into a vat of hot motor oil.. it literally takes less than 5 seconds to heat it and make it malable. It also heats evenly. I keep an old dutch oven full of motor oil and heat it on a camping stove. Once the oil is hot, it's good without further flame, for at least an hour. I love watching people engineer to their needs in their own homes.. Excellent work!
I am looking to install "economical" gutters on my shed to help with water pooling issues, and was looking to see if anyone had the same idea. You've a great solution here. It is also rewarding watching a man from another generation in his workshop showing others "how it's done" with relatively simple tools, some time, plenty of patience, and a desire for lasting craftsmanship.
this is such a great idea and affordable..this is how im going to add much needed gutters on my house. Thank You for sharing this idea with all of us!!!
That was a good looking gutter you have there. I just cut my pipe this afternoon and thought , I better see if anyone else had trouble with hangers or connections. Really nice job, way to go.
Nice job. My understanding is pvc will hold up good as long as it is painted. If not painted the sun's rays will eventually break down. I may try this. thanks for sharing.
LOL...thanks, man. I had the idea when considering just "service" gutters to load up my 330 gallon tote with water for garden. Thought, "gee, lemme see if anyone else has considered just cutting some PVC in half"...Google took me right to you. Great vid, and although I may not use sched 40...wanting to work on the cheap, principles are the same and your vid is a great help. Thanks
Thank you for posting. I have been thinking that half round would do better than regular gutters. Painting the gutter protects it from UV. Wow, that brickwork really looks nice as well as the gutters!
fdutube I just used plastic pipe hangers which cost about 90 cents each, spaced about four foot, which I modified as shown in the video. The gutters have been up for two Winters, and look as good as new. I found that half round schedule plastic pipe does not collect leaves like K gutters and are much stronger than aluminum and vinyl. I used a shop vac blower with two extension tubes to blow leaves out in the Fall. I also use the Shop Vac to blow up the downspouts to clean them out. Glad you found this useful.
Glad you liked the video. I just used PVC joint cleaner and glue to attach tubes together, after which I cut them in half. Gutters are holding up a-okay even in Erie's below zero Winters. At corners I use stainless screws to attach long pieces together at corners. This is so I can easily disassemble long lengths if necessary for repairs.
No seeing the point of this... just checked Home Depot - splitting even 2" PCV pipe works out to $0.42/lineal foot and vinyl gutters are $0.46 per lineal foot... so it seems to me there's absolutely no savings at all....
+D Monk; Yes I made the custom box from Azek board and cut a hole in the bottom for a 2 inch pvc pipe for the downspout. The two inch pipe, after 2 years, is large enough for my roof area, but for a larger roof, a 3 inch could be used.
TURN DOWN THE MUSIC! I CAN BARELY HEAR YOU! If I wanted to try to listen to people talk over loud music I'd have gone to my nearby restaurant instead of searching for gutter ideas.

posh gypsy Glad you find this helpful. This last Winter was the most severe in Erie, Pa history and the gutters still look like new. Good luck.

Thanks for your comment. My gutters have been up for four years now and still look very good.

Great idea for my pole barn. I will use 4” though.
Play back at 2X speed good video and speeds it up
Just the info I've been looking for. Thanks for taking the time to share, your gutters look great!
+squire haggard, Thank you for your comment, Good luck.
Well how did they work out thru the winter snow and spring winds and storms, like that kennedy toolbox.
That was great Robert. Exactly the solution I'm looking for for a shed I'm having installed. How are they holding up 7 years later?
They are holding up great. A big advantage is they are strong enough to lean a ladder against. Glad you like this use of pvc pipe.
Hi Robert-how did the gutters hold up over the winter? I am guessing these did just fine and out did the other brands..... Love the idea!
Hey Robert - great Idea . . . where did you find the hangers that you modified?

Pity you cant play it back faster than 2 times but content is worthy. Thanks
How are these gutters working for you?
thanks for the video. how did you seem the joints to avoid the cracking in climate change.

why didn't you just use black pipe ? is the white better ?
I painted my white pipe bronze, to match the trim on my house. I haven't seen black pipe in the 3 to 4 inch size I needed.
No seeing the point of this... just checked Home Depot - splitting even 2" PCV pipe works out to $0.42/lineal foot and vinyl gutters are $0.46 per lineal foot... so it seems to me there's absolutely no savings at all....
more durable.
for a large barn roof, 4" pvc gutter cost half. more prep, but worth it.
can paint to match Any structure.
Is that box that allows the pipe to be reduced from 3 inches to what looks like 2 inches at 14:27 ?

#Stuart Cort If you want half round Stuart. @D Monk
Wish music was lower as he talks softly and monotone.
Thats really cool can you fix our gutters ?
If you want half round Stuart.
Robert Stinnett ok thank you :)
I wish you would have shown how you mounted the hangers to your house.

Sorry, you are right, Next time not so loud or no music.
Sweet Geezus everyone, just jump to 4:00. I wanted to hang myself by the time we got to fvcking doing something.
pvc guttering is inexpensive and top quality why on earth try to make your own???????
In my particular case, commercial gutters won't fit on my shed.
