Diana Taurasi met her match in Skylar Diggins-Smith, so they had to beef

  • Diana Taurasi is a force. Her accolades span pages and pages, she's largely considered the greatest of all time in the WNBA, and she's one of the most fun trash-talkers to watch play. Skylar Diggins-Smith, also being a force, a trash talker, and an All-Star guard, seemed like a great fit next to Taurasi on the Phoenix Mercury. "Seemed" is the key word here.

A decade from now, she'll be remembered as the 🐐 of the "cancer era". She helped make that league irrelevant by being the W version of Rapinoe.
Nevermind the 1ppg, how about the fact that both Points were awful and the 2 guard was cold all tournament.
Look up the ratings post Paris. The only games drawing a number are CC. Period. Full Stop.
Magically, now she gets the AP PotW. Now she gets the RoY push.
The W made a nearly fatal mistake: Unrivaled gets CC, the W is the second best women's league overnight as far as exposure is concerned. The fact that that rights deal isn't signed yet proves it. That $3b is for CC. Not the W, CC.
Now, they're treating her right. They're giving her the shine.
CC is the market, and she has all the leverage. The W gets that now. If they don't do this right, the league folds. CC is the league wether they like it or not.

They didn't need her to win the Olympics. She deserved to be there, because of all she has done for the league over the years. I really hate it, when older players aren't given the respect they are due. She could have ridden the bench all game every game, and still deserved to be there. I don't particularly like her. I didn't like how she denigrated CC. She, if anyone, should have seen the raw talent there. But she is getting old, and looking at a steadily declining, fewer and fewer minutes, fewer and fewer points, assists, and rebounds, and it hurts to have to be considered 'washed up' by the fans. It's time to retire, Diana. Become a mentor, a coach, for the next generation of players. But to all those who never achieved what she has, go F yourself. You opinions aren't worth S.

Accomplished (past tense) & pretty much finished. At the time she wasn't better than Diggins at that stage of their careers. DT's resume can't go out there and guard her man or help her poor shot selection. Classic "resting on your laurels" case. All those "accomplishments" so heavy they're weighing the team down. She's always had stacked teams going back to UCONN and just takes all the shots. Indeed a special talent but attitude and selfishness capped (as in Cappie Pondexter Finals MVP of DT's 1st title 😅) her run. Premature goat talk & the logo was WAY too much too early, is not aging well and it's gone to her head. She's not a greater player than Maya Moore, Cynthia Cooper, Tamika Catchings or Candace Parker. Turasi's status is more about marketing. The league wanted to ride her early momentum coming in the league off the dominance of those UCONN teams, then the league allowed PHX to stack teams around her early in her career..

@@churdle92 There's no way DT had any direct sway...She definitely didn't tell the committee to keep them off. BUT, team USA absolutely had an agenda to get DT her sixth gold, that's 100% true. They had the same agenda in 2021 with DT and Sue Bird, wanting to get them #5. One of the higher ups on the selection committee is a Uconn alum, who is always partial to Uconn players. The USA Women were gonna win gold regardless, so having DT there for "leadership" was fine. And the USA team sometimes has rookies, sometimes doesn't. It's not a hard and fast rule. The last rookie they had was Breanna Stewart in 2016...They took her instead of Candace Parker, and THAT was a snub.

@@elliemyers6435 While it is true that they were likely to win regardless, the same argument could be made to leave DT (or other veterans) off the team and add younger players. They were going to win anyway, right? In fact, it would actually HELP the program in the long run, as it would give some younger players some much needed high-level international experience for when it maybe isn't such a lock that the US will win gold.

They had one shot at the title and that was in 2021.
    2020 wasn't a real season.
Not unlike the other Phoenix basketball team.
Without Griner they weren't going anywhere, and DT isn't getting any younger. She's an all-time great, but at 40 was no longer at all star level, and her coach was an idiot for saying what she said.
And getting her a 6th gold for a grand total of 5 points (yes, five) at the Paris Olympics was a joke at the expense of several more deserving players.

    • @elliemyers6435
      @elliemyers6435 23 дня назад +2

Yep...all of this is true. 2020 was a weird year, plus they were without BG for half of that season, so they had no real chance...and with No BG for 2022, and the heaviness of that whole situation, no team could have come through that. Also, Nygaard was just in over her head. The only head coaching job she ever had prior to the Mercury was coaching high school....She had been a WNBA assistant previously, but the Mercury had a lot of big personalities in that locker room, so they really needed to try to find an established coach, not some bonafide rookie. Plus, DT wasn't playing well at all in 2022 - definitely not at all-star level, so, the coach saying she deserved an all-star spot when she didn't was just shoving her foot even deeper into her mouth. And you're right again, that USA basketball had an agenda to get DT her sixth gold...The team didn't need her at all...They didn't need her in 2021 either, when she also barely played, and was coming off injury. I get why they took her, and don't have an issue with it, but, there are some players that are only going to have this opportunity once, so, it would have been nice to see them get a shot. Also, BTW, you're the only person I've seen who refers to the 2020 WNBA season as "not a real season," which is interesting. Soooooooooooooo many teams didn't have full rosters, and MANY stars sat out that year.
