I´ve developed the suspension for a formula student car, and also been responsible for all vehicle dynamics of another, and a few things do scare me. First please do not run the battery in that position. If you crash that can quite likely come into contact with a object. If you have that happen it can be dangerous. Place it in somewhere secure. Second that bump steer is for sure going to damage stability, having sigificant slip angle with vertical movement can be bad if not studied carefully. Also there are a few ways to easily properly align your wheels you can easily have 1 or more degrees of error if you do not measure it properly (saying from experience), and bad alignment will create worse handling and more unpredictability. If you need any suggetions I'm sure me and other people could give you some advice. Also look if there is not a local FSAE team maybe they can also give you some advices even help you with cad software and some FEM basic analysis (if you do not know what it is research it you will find it interesting). Also i would suggest implementing a rear anti roll bar. I believe it could help you a lot in cornering since you have a locked axle.
I have already said all of those things in previous videos. He doesn't care and states that he makes it up as he goes and doesn't want to study anything... Bummer. I am also a suspension member of an FSAE team

A bit late but when you're making steering columns with multiple u-joints you need to offset them in their rotation. Basically you need to turn one 90 degrees, it prevents binding at weird angles. It will still function but you will get better operation with them offset. Learned this from Mike Finnegan on Roadkill back in the day. Makes sense when you watch and feel the difference. Awesome build! You're doing great, can't wait to see the finished project.

Henry Ford made the first prototype Model T several times before nailing it. But what's interesting is that the vert first prototype when he and his engineers realized "this isn't going to work" Henry pushed to keep going when they all wanted to start over. The idea he professed (paraphrased) is this: "We have more mistakes yet to make, and more to learn from. If we start over there will be mistakes made further from where we are now." And that's it. Too many people are stuck in project paralysis because they're so focused on being "perfect" out the gate. KEEP GOING! If you iterate on an incomplete project you're never have a complete project. I learned this best when I had the revelation that my daily driver was the enemy of my project car. For years I thought having a daily meant I could tackle "larger" projects for the project car. But instead the project car spends most of it's life down, mid-project. KEEP IT RUNNING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. We all build cars to USE AND ENJOY them. The more time you spend enjoying it, the more motivated you'll be to ITERATE it in small chunks instead of scrapping it and starting over.
Now we need to see a turbo K24 cart next and maybe colab with B/B Kyle, man i hate the clutches was slipping. Been cool to see you be able to ring it out a little but also that gave you the chance to feel it out without the tires spinning too. Awesome job
This thing is sick, awesome job! Can't wait to see the bodywork! Lowering that rack and pinion should help with the bump steer, keeping the tie rods more level

Let people like you two be an inspiration to anyone any age . Yes bits will break, bits will fall off and you will do everything differently the second time round as you learn from your mistakes. Excellent, well done. No overheating, no fluid leaks out. No electrical issues. You can make adjustments and start planning your tests. Plus yo can think of an aero and bodywork. It’s made by yourself and you can now build know how for the next one. I made a decision. My F1 project will be with an VW 1.8T and a Hewland gear box, Porsche GT3 hubs, breaks, steering box. Targeted weight 450kg without fluids. It’s a turbo, the tank will take 100l. Good luck with your project. It’s amazing to see how one can get there where he feels like the Wright Brothers.

Love what you're doing! A couple of things to consider. Please consider making your battery tray out of something other than carbon fiber blend. Carbon Fiber conducts electricity and cause you to do serious damage to your electrical system! Also, consider creating some "L" shaped drop links to drop the steering rods. While not perfect, it'll allow for better bump-steer characteristics, as any driving you do-doesn't matter the speed, will generate peculiar driving dynamics. I have a feeling your Ackerman's off as well due to your steering rod mounting points.
More reactive steering is meeded for sure, but this build is awesome. Ive been quietly watching for so long. This is epic! We all find the errors in our builds and setups! Keep building and keep learning. Oh most importantly keep going fast!

For 3D printer, I recommend an Elegoo Neptune 4 Max. It's only $500 and has a large print volume of 420mm x 420mm x 480mm. I used it for printing large parts.

Those pedal fluid containers can be relocated to allow for a steering shaft to position the steering behind the battery and solve some of your angle issues.
It looks amazing but I just finished watching all the Fast and the Furious movies, and instantly got reminded of the Flip car from Fast and Furious 6. Nice work!
On piping they have mil tolerances when they fab it. So you can buy a 0.120" pipe and it actually be a little thinner. In some cases for carbon steel the mil tolerance has been + or - 12.5%. You do the math 0.120 - 12.5% = 0.105. Just FYI if someone else hasn't shared.
At least that's bump steer in the safe direction (y) as you corner harder and develop more roll it steers out of the corner. That just means you must add more steering to counter, as you corner harder, you have to add small amounts of steering to compensate for bumpsteer - it's equivalent to the understeer direction - you'll just perceive it as understeer, it's fine

Great job, sounds amazing, looking forward to see this completed! I have a small concern maybe I'm wrong, but the anti-roll cage having only 2 fix points could be a little flimsy, are you planing on a halo-like head protection?
What makes this series so enjoyable is that it is not whitewashed. Things start out wonky, you own your failures and take pride in becoming a better engineer. The fun part is watching you do stuff not that perfect and then wanting to do it better because you learned. Good that you make your own design everywhere, it would be boring if you used someone else's plans or ideas and just assembled something.
Good work, except I have some suggestions. 1. I don't know what kind of battery that is. Maybe it's vertical because it's not AGM. It's in the front, so it's good for balance, but there is no bracing that could protect it. 2. The steering wheels is also nice, but I would create a new design that has a plate that is at least rectangular that the wheel sits on. Much more surface that the Plastic would steer against. The bolts would then just hold the wheel on the brace. Other than that, your car is pretty awesome. I wouldn't worry about a lack of diff, go carts don't have them. Bump steer, tracks are pretty smooth.
you CAN put the steering bars in the right place you just have to make a remote to the actual steering rack , can be done theres room for it too (wish was my oly concern the last time i mentioned it "put a bar in the right spot for the steering arms to sit level , put the bar in slider bearings and attach the steering rods to it , weld a sturdy triangulated arm to it connecting it to the steering rack in a way so it cannot flex only move from one side to the other and youre done
tip for when using body filler is to wait a week so it hardens completely. because otherwise you will always have the warping that most repainted cars have and just 1 week won't make a difference on a 1+ year project (for the seat it's not that important but for body panels, it will be a major difference)
idea for your bump steer, keep in mind i know nothing about suspension. move the articulation point on the hub to the top side, sounds unconventional but its worth a check with a mock up or cad design
I do wanna recommend buying a tire heating blanket that would go 250°C, and sorry if u don't understand Celsius, and when heating the tire, i do recommend set the temperature too 100°C bc the more the hotter the tire the more the grip
4:02 welcome to pipe tolerances, 20 thou off ain't abnormal. If you want good consistent tolerances you should get tubing, extruded tubing doesn't have the greatest tolerances but it's probably fine for a project like this. In my field (rocketry) we like Drawn Over Mandrel (DOM) tubing, preferably with Individual Readings (IR) that control both OD, ID, and concentricity with a good deal of accuracy. But that's probably overkill here.

well you can lower the steering rack to where you want. just have a sprocket on the steering rack and a chain going up to where the input axle is placed.
i will say that if you don't put the battery on the front wheels then you could make provisions for a weight insert and that would be future proof since you can add or take them away as needed.

Awesome job mate. Do you ever stand back from a project and think "How??" What started as a pile of pipes and a vision became THIS.
Move the steering rack from attaching at the bottom of the A arm, put it at the top to take some of the 'angle of the dangle out!'

Great job, sounds amazing, looking forward to see this completed! I have a small concern maybe I'm wrong, but the anti-roll cage having only 2 fix points could be a little flimsy, are you planing on a halo-like head protection?
What makes this series so enjoyable is that it is not whitewashed. Things start out wonky, you own your failures and take pride in becoming a better engineer. The fun part is watching you do stuff not that perfect and then wanting to do it better because you learned. Good that you make your own design everywhere, it would be boring if you used someone else's plans or ideas and just assembled something.

Good work, except I have some suggestions.
1. I don't know what kind of battery that is. Maybe it's vertical because it's not AGM. It's in the front, so it's good for balance, but there is no bracing that could protect it.
2. The steering wheels is also nice, but I would create a new design that has a plate that is at least rectangular that the wheel sits on. Much more surface that the Plastic would steer against. The bolts would then just hold the wheel on the brace.
Other than that, your car is pretty awesome. I wouldn't worry about a lack of diff, go carts don't have them.
Bump steer, tracks are pretty smooth.
you CAN put the steering bars in the right place you just have to make a remote to the actual steering rack , can be done theres room for it too (wish was my oly concern the last time i mentioned it
"put a bar in the right spot for the steering arms to sit level , put the bar in slider bearings and attach the steering rods to it , weld a sturdy triangulated arm to it connecting it to the steering rack in a way so it cannot flex only move from one side to the other and youre done
tip for when using body filler is to wait a week so it hardens completely. because otherwise you will always have the warping that most repainted cars have and just 1 week won't make a difference on a 1+ year project (for the seat it's not that important but for body panels, it will be a major difference)
Also, I put the epoxy on the fibreglass before laying it out and use a roller to properly lay it down.

For the next bench, fibrglass some metal to the bench, so the mounting points are not in danger to crack. Otherwise awesome job! Way to go.

The driver location adds a lot of weight to the front end, helping with the weight bias, thus helping with the front end grip.
idea for your bump steer, keep in mind i know nothing about suspension. move the articulation point on the hub to the top side, sounds unconventional but its worth a check with a mock up or cad design
I do wanna recommend buying a tire heating blanket that would go 250°C, and sorry if u don't understand Celsius, and when heating the tire, i do recommend set the temperature too 100°C bc the more the hotter the tire the more the grip

4:02 welcome to pipe tolerances, 20 thou off ain't abnormal. If you want good consistent tolerances you should get tubing, extruded tubing doesn't have the greatest tolerances but it's probably fine for a project like this. In my field (rocketry) we like Drawn Over Mandrel (DOM) tubing, preferably with Individual Readings (IR) that control both OD, ID, and concentricity with a good deal of accuracy. But that's probably overkill here.

well you can lower the steering rack to where you want. just have a sprocket on the steering rack and a chain going up to where the input axle is placed.

i will say that if you don't put the battery on the front wheels then you could make provisions for a weight insert and that would be future proof since you can add or take them away as needed.
