What I say about everything is that you don't need expensive gear to create something good. But you might need expensive gear to do something specific.
And while most people want to be good, they don't want to be just any type of good, they want a specific type of good.. which may or may not be cheap or easy.

This is very true. Harmor and Sytrus are extremely powerful stock synths in FL Studio. Plus if you're using stock plugins you can share your project files when you collab with other people and they'll almost always be able to use them since they should have all your plugins. All you'd need to do extra is send any samples you used.

My only counter argument is how much great free software there is (Analog Obession, Nova, Cakewalk, Tracktion, etc) and cheap software from companies like Reaper (excellent DAW) and Plugin Alliance (often only £10 for a really good plugin).

Thank you for clearing the air on this one! I always thought of it this way, because the prices for quality plugins right now are high and their trial schemes are all over the place, some mutes, some adds noise, and others just downright give you less than a month to really evaluate them and use them in real world scenarios. Others might say that Waves/Plugin Alliance products are dirt cheap, but sometimes they're not what you wanted, and other plugin manufacturers sometimes adds gain or boosts the level to make it "feel good", so the adage "you get what you pay for" applies here as well. Now after months of doing it, I am finally deciding on the things that I really use, and started buying them off one by one(like my love for FabFilter, Valhalla, and Softube plugs). And also because I believe in supporting the developers in order for them to keep on making top-notch products.

same when i was young i wanted to use 3d modeling and image processing software. by using the cracked ones i got used/hooked on them and of course later, when i could afford them, guess which ones i bought. i never understood why companies (some do) didn't put more efforts into making more usable and functional "edu" versions, especially for young people. if you give a 13 year old your 5000 buck software for free to play around with, you have zero opportunity costs (not like they were gonna buy it anyway) and just increased your chances of a later sale. even if you are an over-greedy bastard of a company, this seems the right approach... because they will get the cracked version anyway, but if you give it to them directly you attach a lot of positive emotions to it

What will happen is for future OS updates on Mac etc the developer won’t be able to update their plugins if needed because they’ll have gone bust from everyone stealing their plugin, so in 5-10 years if you ever need to open that old session again it won’t sound the same because those plugins might not work unless you revert back to an old OS just to use that 1 plugin in an old session. Would be very time consuming.

This would make sense to me as it’s basically an advert. 99% of people will buy a cracked plugin once they have the money/ the software goes on sale. I know that’s what got me into synthesis as a whole. And not just serum. I grabbed and played around with lesser known ones like spire. I doubt I would have ever given it a second thought if I didn’t just find the crack and thought ah well I’ll just add it to my collection. Ended up loving the synth and getting really in-depth with its mechanics and quirks and never looked back.

I will add as a note the downside of having tons of cracks from my personal experience - I wasted a LOT of time learning and using plugins that I will never use again. I do agree that it is convenient when you can't get free trials of stuff, but with age and experience I have learned it's far more valuable (in terms of time and energy) to understand WHY you are using a specific plugin and going to it for specific uses, instead of loading up on a whack of them and rummaging around through a heap of trash until you finally hit on good ones. Most of the good ones have free demos -> use those first to see whether you like them and if you can't afford them MAYBE then look for cracked versions, but don't get the giant bundles of all sorts of junk. I'd say if you like something and you're serious about production find a way to buy it asap. You will feel more attached to your tools and will work with the momentum of your effort behind you to move forward into your career.

Here are my tips on how to save a fortune:
    * Signup for newsletters with Plugin Boutique, Plugin Alliance & ADSR - these 3 are constantly running sales.
    * Signup for newsletters with all your favourite developers - I recommend Softube & Waves as they do the best special offers I've seen. Also Arturia & ROLI have great offers sometimes.
    * Check your inbox often for notification of sales and exclusive subscriber discount coupons. Note that Plugin Alliance's special offers only last 1-2 days so check your inbox often - also, every month you buy stuff, they email you a loyalty voucher (amount based on what you spend) to use the following month when the next special offers come up!

100% I now own close to £2k of the cracked software I used to use. I couldn't have afforded it when I started out and thanks to many finance options available now I own practically everything I use. And yes it feels 100x better to support the companies.

I started that way, never liked it but never could afford them, now I’ve bought many and feel good about it, thing is I could actually learn and work with them to get to that level were I could buy them without hesitation as opposed to never learning because there’s a paywall to entry *_coff_* Protools *_coff_* which is why I use reaper too, that also helped me tremendously to learn all about audio when I don’t have the connections or means to learn in a professional environment never less pay a subscription with my third world salary/coin that literally doubles and sometimes triples every. single. thing.

I'm proud to say that i only have legal software on my cubase system. Most developers have trial versions and the campaigns and offers at reduced price are anyway frequent. And if you buy you also support development of new and imprived products. I nowadays look upon my computer based projectstudio as a digital twin to a analog studio. I think we have come pretty far here compared to other industries.

One major reason not to use cracked plugins: it's far better to limit yourself and use what you have... because if you don't set a limit, then cracks can easily consume much of your time. And you won't even use 99% of them because you just have too many. And then you won't ever get to really know how to use the plugins you like. So, limit yourself, and get more music done. Just buy a few plugins that you really like. Let your wallet be the limiting factor.

Ian Kirkpatrick, hit record producer for big artists (most currently Dua Lipa), started out with a pirated Cubase SX3. Might have legally bought all the software he liked after using pirated/cracked versions of them with his producer money. After all, he was interviewed by Steinberg who developed his Cubase - his primary DAW - and why he liked it.
    If that ain't a success story, I don't know what is. 😊

My advice to people getting started is try not to get hung up on those expensive plug-ins and learn how to use the stock plug-ins in your daw. They work great. REALLY. If they don't sound great it's not because you need an expensive plug-in. It's because you need to learn how to USE it. It takes time to learn and to develop your ear. No plugin can do this for you.

I agree 100% Streaky. That reminded me that I have way too many plugins (not cracks) overall. Having too many options kills the vibe of mixing. I got almost all UAD plugins, and they were the best-sounding plugins to my ears until I discovered Acustica Audio Nebula. Now, I'm using Nebula as much as I can and I wish I could sell some of the UAD plugins I purchased in the past. To sum it up: having too many plugins, cracked or not is not a good thing IMHO.

That's why I love the way Reaper opperates. You download the full software with no account or anything on a "30 day trial". But nothing happens after those 30 days. You keep the software forever. You just get a pop up every time you open it suggesting you buy it. Because realistically a 7 day, 10 day, or even a 30 day trial often isn't enough. Especially when you are learning and you don't really have your workflow figured out. They recognized that and allowed you to pay on your own time. I'm sure some people take advantage of the honor system. But I appreciate when you trust me as a consumer. And when I decided I was going to stick with reaper, I paid.

I cracked every single plugin because i was broke since i work i buy every plugin i use.
That said my advice is, dont get any plugin, first learn all the native modules of your daw, then you ll realise that lots of plugin are actually useless as you can achieve the same thing most of the time within your daw. Plugins i buy are only ones that accelerate my work flow, cutting the time between the idea and its application.

Lovely take on what can often times be a hot button issue. For a lot of big names who've "made it" in the industry it's easy to just denounce the whole idea and characterize some middle class kid with a cracked copy of FL as the devil himself, but the sad truth is most young people, beginner producers, and songwriters aren't sitting on a mountain of cash and don't exactly know what they need. I say more power to you if it means more great music out there, but at the same time I'd advocate for supporting your favorite developers whenever possible! These can be great tools to learn and spread the love with, so produce wisely. With great power comes great responsibility.

  • @fruitproof115
    @fruitproof115 11 месяцев назад

If you have a lot of cracked plugins and at some point in time you buy a new PC or Mac, this would be a good time to not copy them on your fresh system and instead buy a couple of plugins that you actually use. (Keep in mind that cracks might come with trojan horses, viruses or other malware.)
    Two more tips regarding plugins:
-- Watch out for sales. After a while you will understand the sale policy of different manifacturers and you can get a lot of plugins cheaper (at least 50%, sometimes 90%)
-- Always install the trial version and use the ENTIRE trial period. You will love a new plugin on the first try, but this doesn't mean it actually fits in your workflow.
