  • Indiana hosts a variety of habitats that makes for some great birding. I visited the Hoosier state and got to bird with my girlfriend Claire, on a quest to find some common species, as well as some that are more rare, such as the Smith's Longspur.

My husband and I moved from the Southwest to Indiana and are loving seeing the birds here that we have never seen

Southern Indiana is almost a whole different state when it comes to birds. If you are ever in the area, let us know. We would love to show you the best spots.

I might be one of the few people who regularly birds around White River State Park, but I've found some great birds over the years! Same with Military Park and the Statehouse.

I learn so much from your videos, never had a Longspur of any kind, hope to change that in the next year or two.

Cool to see you enjoy one of my favorite spots in the city! I spent about 8 hours over 3 days trying to find that little gull before I actually got to see it at Eagle Creek.

From Michigan I successfully chased my Lifer Common Crane in Indiana a few years ago. Also attended the Indiana Dunes Birding Festival last year. Still need Smith’s Longspur as a Lifer. Congrats!

I visited those same spots last spring and came up empty on both species. But I did add Smith's Longspur to my life list a few weeks later at a prairie preserve in Chicago's SW suburbs. Do we know if their presence this far east was an anomaly, or part of a trend? Did they winter in Indiana, or just take a bit of a sideways path heading north?

How often do you go birding at other states?

This year fairly often! We try to get out to different places as much as we can!

I have contacted the 'naughty bird activity' department, citing the 350 matings in week as evidence. Hopefully we will soon see those naughty birds behind bars.

Typical longspurs! They don’t like to hang around too long. You should come out to Manitoba for birding some time. It’s fantastic here.
