Thank you for this helpful video, I was taught something like this years ago and have art and photography books that are just as nice as the day I got them.
very helpful!! Just got a tale of two cities, Alice in wonderland, Pride and prejudice, and an Edgar Allen Poe collection at Barnes and noble and I really like their designs so I definitely wanted them to last!
@@haroldmiller9371 No problem! Bought a couple new books today and noticed they were super stiff, so I decided to look it up and came across this video
I always hold my books not fully opened to avoid breaking it, wich lends to not fully really enjoy reading as I must be very careful. As soon as I get home I'll try this and I'm sure my reading time will highly improve. Thanks!
Thanks so much! I discovered recently that some of my favorite books almost falling apart because I didn't know to do this with them, which pains me deeply, but now I don't have to worry as much
Thank you :) I actually just received a bible. And I was looking for a video about how to safely open a new book and I find a person who has a video who also opens a christian book. That's funny.
i was always told to protect the spine you should place the backbone on the table then gently fold down front cover and then the back. Then alternate folding down a small amount of pages from the front and then while holding the main paper bundle of the book fold down a small amount of pages from the back and continue this front and back folding down gently until you get to the middle.
Thanks Harold. I’ve always been that guy who reads my hardcover books only about half open, leaving me preferring paperbacks. 😂 Not sure why it took me this long to finally look up how to fully open one.
I have to do this everytime before a workout, too. To my legs, and arms, and back, and stuff. I'm over 40. :) GREAT video, though! I learned something like this in grade school. New textbooks for the year (lucky us!). --except that the teacher had all of us bearing down with all our tiny student weight on our desks to smoosh those poor little textbooks flat, HA HA!! We didn't know any better, but watching this video and comparing to that memory gave me a laugh. THANK YOU for that laugh! God bless!
I really don't get what everyone's talking about with the meme thing or why everyone says they're crying? Completely lost here.... It's just a guy showing us the proper way to care for a new hardcover. Nothing more, nothing less....
Interesting. I guess there is some disagreement on the best approach. I only heard for the first time *yesterday* that there is a "correct way" to open a book. What's odd though, is every other source I have seen (so far) suggests sitting the book on its spine, lowering one cover, then the other, then laying down a few pages at a time, alternating from the front and back.
Hi si, thank you for the advice and I will use it on my future adquisitions. I have recently purchased a limited edition omnibus that is sown together and in the websites book care part it says Keep the open angle as small as possible when reading (flat at 180 degrees is a bad, bad thing)" . How come opening it to 180 degrees is a bad thing? also could I still use your technique on a book which is close to 1000 pages? Thank you very much.
I will comment later..Right now am in hospital because my friend swallowed a 8GB memory card, now he is singing all the song in it, that’s why all noisy
You've never opened a brand new book and had the spine crack in half because it's still stiff? Shit happens. Only needs to happen once for you to be more careful the next time.
You're all jerks, I came here because I actually wanted to open my book without it breaking.
Same here I was scared to ruin my book lol
I am getting "The art of war" by Sun Tzu for my birthday and I do not want to ruin that FANCY book ✨

It becomes even more challenging when the book is hardcover and over 900 pages.
