Back in the early 70's, only three aircraft could deliver the good to high value, highly defended targets in the middle of the night. Those aircraft where the B-52's, F-111's and the A-6's. The F-111 had a disasterous operational start in 1968 and was taken out of action until 1972, the B-52's where due to their size not optimum for the targets around Hanoi, Haiphong, etc. The A-6 carried the load.
*Ken Caryer* I watched a documentary where a former F-111 pilot said he believed the A-6 Intruder was a better bomber. People really don't properly appreciate or understand just how good the A-6 was.
I'd probably say the all the F-111 and A6/EA6B are some of the sexiest aircraft ever made. I also love the XB70, B1B, and B52 along with every other plane I'm missing lol.
This aircraft and crew were from the VA-165 Boomers. I was a Bombardier Navigator in VA-196 Main Battery. Great memories of low levels and carrier landings in the early 80's. 1500 hours and 320 carrier landings.
Bob Isacson You must had lots fun lucky you it was my dream job still is to be a fighter pilot but because i had to come to uk I only finished my national services
Love the Intruder and Prowler. They were my specialty back in my service days. Structures, pneumatic systems, hydraulics service and repairs as an Aviation Structural Mechanic. Even performed launch and recovery duties as a plane captain. Great aircraft adapt easily to multi-purpose rolls. The Hornet and Growler are the offspring of the A-6, evolving in speed and self-defense. Go Navy!
Thanks for sharing, spent 4 1/2 years flying these in the early 90's, still a shame that they went away, would have been perfect for the last ten years in Iraq and Afghanistan. Miss those low-levels.
@mustang33fly: Mahalo's for the memories...was a grunt with 3rd Marines during the Storm...had a few A6 jocks roll in an plaster a Rublican Guard position as we moved towards Ras Al Jaber during the first gulf war. Was a sad day knowing these babies were retired soon after..... Again Mahalo's.
@fraucow Two helmets types here. Pilot has the single visor type and I have the clunky double visor. It let me be lazy in that I didn't have to switch out day/night visors before flights. At that time (circa 1991) the USAF-style helmets were all the rage and lots of guys went for those--still in use today. They have no hard cover over the visor. I never went that route. Now my old helmet gathers dust on a bookshelf.
My son is on a mission to recover an A-6 crash site that occurred in Panama in 1985. I'm a retired Chief and always admired the A-6... almost as much as the F-14. This video is a clear indicator of what mission the A-6 was built to complete. Much admiration for those that flew it...
Great stuff! Some of the best in-cockpit shots I've seen. I'm an old F-111 guy, but I have always had an admiration for the A-6. Similar roles, I guess. Thanks for posting these!
@@tedjob21 going back to Vietnam, the A-6s had far superior accuracy, while the Air Force developed the F-111's ground attack systems for a far less satisfying result
I found it cool even as a kid! Might not be pretty and supersonic but I was always more into the ground hugging any time any weather fighters! Only thing that always bothered me was the lack of a proper cannon.
I know a fellow who flew weapons on an A6. He said that it was a great aircraft, very smooth ride. He and the pilot were a team and worked together seamlessly, anticipating every move. He also said that the looping twisting rides at an amusement park were more aggressive than anything he every flew in combat.
As does mine, with my O2 mask and my boom mike still attached. My last tour was a non-flying one and I never turned in my flight gear when I left. I still have my g-suit, torso harness and SV-2 minus the bladder of course.
Another DoD blunder cancelling the upgrades (A-6F Intruder II) to the A-6 for the A-12 Avenger which was not even near production when the entire project was scrapped; forcing the use of the F-14 for the role which in turn was retired and now only the F-18 in service. Now we're stuck with a dog call F-35 and none of the 3 (F-14, F-18, and F-35) has the range and payload of the A-6. One giant step backwards.
Well even with the -F model upgrades, the Intruder was still a bit behind on the survivability curve. The Avenger's failure probably cost the Navy more than any other bad decision since the jet age. Maybe the A-6F would have been decent as a stopgap, but I just don't know. Russian SAMs were getting more and more sophisticated.
I wish they would've kept the A-6, just update the damn thing with modern avionics and perhaps more efficient engines and it'd still be as valuable today as it was back then. The B-52 is still flying because it just WORKS, same with the A-6.........
I served with VMA-(AW)-533 from 78 to 82. I was an avionics tech and if you're into avionics, it doesn't get any more 'star wars'' than that. At least for the 70s. Great pilots, great bird! Ugly, but if you want to put bombs on target in 0 viz, call in the A-6's!
They did substitute but never the real replacement, very rugged airframe and even the super Hornets won't get near the A-6 amazing range and huge payload
Really wanted to fly those but was not to be. Would have been a short career, they went away 4 years after I was winged and with the jet pipeline at the time I would have never seen them. I think we would have had Intruders past 2010 had they bought the A6F.
Looks like Oman? If it was pre 1991 then I met a few 'Boomers' on that detachment, as they acted as FACs with my dad. I remember 'Squiggy' and co well. :)
Gotta give credit to Grumman for the best use of the "Barn Door Theory" (make a wing like a barn door, and no matter how much stuff you hang off of it, the plane won't fly any slower).

The A6 was about the loudest jet I can remember. From NAS Meridian or NAS Coronado or NAS Cubi Point. When they came by or took off it was LOUD. They seemed to hold more ordinance than any other Naval aircraft.
Isn't it like illegal to film the cockpit of a military aircraft? Seems like I heard that somewhere once. Also, when you see how fast the ground is moving along under you, it's amazing to consider that the A-6 is considered a "slow" jet. Think what Mach 1+ at 200ft must have looked like in an F-105. Of course, I doubt they often flew much faster than you are in this video when they were on actual missions and strapped with ordnance. I always figured that 80% of the cost of developing a supersonic aircraft went into giving the ability to fly above Mach 1, even though they spend 99% of their time at subsonic speeds and can carry out the majority of their missions without ever going supersonic.
Personally Id take the word of the eyeballs in the strike package that witnessed the event (ie: MIG). If the eyeballs in the strike package believe it was a Mig kill then they were aware of its presence. Iraq had the entire 80's to learn USN tactics, electronic signatures, etc while we were refereeing the Iran/Iraq war. The Mig is a capable aircraft and there is some evidence that suggest Iraqi combat aircraft were squawking or using ecm on coalition IFF frequency.
Question. Do you know what really happened to Lt.Cmdr. Scott Speicher on 1/17/91? Did a Mig-25 really shoot him down? If so, how did AWACS miss the Mig? His story is a very sad and bizarre one. Thank you for any input you can provide?
He was shot down by a Mig-25 and his remains were found in 2009. I think he was at the highest range of missile range which might be 20 miles. The first day of war a lot of airplanes flying and the AWACS missed it or called it and it was to late.
VFA-81 and VFA-83 had a strike mission near H3. A MiG-25 took off in burner and a lot of the guys saw him. The E-3 wouldnt clear the other Hornets to fire. A lot of guys think that the MiG crashed afterward or got shot down on another mission since the Iraqis never made a claim. I had friends on the Saratoga during that cruise.
