A SCAM Repair Shop Ripped Off A Viewer - Let's Fix It! A viewer named Grant sent his Xbox One X to a repair shop to get it fixed but they not only didn't fix the problem, their "work" caused the Xbox to start overheating. The overheating was caused by not cleaning off the old thermal paste (rookie mistake) and the original problem, a faulty HDMI port, they ran traces to try to fix but they didn't run enough traces and they weren't all connected properly.

I get a lot of emails from people asking me to repair their devices. While I wish I could just fix everything, I simply just can't. Please don't be offended if I can't repair your device or if I don't respond to your messages. I try to respond to as many as I can but I get a lot. If you're looking for a great game console repair shop I highly recommend shanefix.com (not sponsored)
Thank you all for your support!
You do great work sir, your videos are a pleasure to watch 🇨🇦
I had my console crap out on me. Saw what the local repair shops would charge. I literally saved more money by buying the tools I needed and then just watching your videos and an ifixit video.
That's awesome! Nice work.
I do the exact same thing mate its way more fun this way aswell
Did the same thing when my ps3 power supply broke, I changed it by myself and it's been good for years now.
@@Tronicsfix i’m glad people still care about the Xbox one X, nobody seems to care about it anymore. Especially Microsoft. I know they had to switch production over to the Xbox series X, but still, they should offer the Xbox one X refurbished at a discount.
I did the same years ago when my PS3 bluray laser died. Just watched some RUclips videos and bought a new laser off Amazon for 40 and did it myself in about an hour. It's criminal that there's such a pushback to right to repair.
It's amazing that a "repair shop" would put new thermal paste on top of old thermal paste without cleaning the old stuff off lol
More amazing they were charged 180 lol
For 180 buck!!!! 😂
Agreed
@@Tronicsfix hey my xbox fan is messed up it keeps slowly starting up then goes really fast then slow and it doesn't cool my xbox down at all then it turns off is it the fan or the controller
@@Peachymilk36577 what turns off your controller or Xbox?
I love how much passion he has for helping others and fixing everything. Even when he’s never done it like the cameras he jumps right in. Let’s get this channel a Gold Play Button, he more then deserves it.
Thank you for the support
Hey I am a soldering technician. This was some good work. The only thing I would have done different is on the trace you made, rather than snipping it with clippers you can just bend them back and forth until it breaks off. The benefit of that is you can test your joint and remove excess wire at the same time as well as it breaks off right at the solder joint instead of having that bit of extra wire still hanging off. Other than that amazing work. :)
Yes, that's a good point. I used to do that. Not sure why I stopped.
I really hate these technicians who doesn't know what they're doing
They do, they're just lazy and unbothered.
Agreed, so dumb that this happens
Imagine paying someone to break your stuff. UGH
I's okay for a technician not knowing what to do! But its not okay to pretend to be an "expert" and charge money for "service" rendered.
@@johnkenneth918 the technician must be well trained before taking apart any device
Unbelievable how shoddy that repair job is. The improper solder and not putting thermal paste on? Come on! Awesome job making it right Steve!
That was awesome to watch, thanks mate!
Your precision skills on that kind of small scale are just incredible.
I just want to say thank you for your youtube. I've always been interested in fixing systems and controllers since I was around 13 So I started tinkering with xbox one controllers with some of your videos while I was working at a game store and we had controllers with drift. Well two years later and I am starting a repair side to a business that I work for now. Literally all of the things I know I've learned by watching your videos and actually just started with microsoldering so I really appreciate you making this content. I hope to be able to open my own shop sometime down the line and do simular things to what you're doing
I wish people would sue these shady repair shops. It's terrible that they stay in business and let them get away with it.
Another great fix! Its pretty diplomatic of you not to put the scam artists name on blast. Shows how professional you are and that your main focus is helping the customer and remaining professional.
I actually don't know who the repair shop was. I feel torn about whether I should say the name of them in cases like this. This is definitely NOT ok but at the same time I don't want them to get hate. There's already too much of that going around.
@@Tronicsfix I respect that, I think it would be good to name them because that was a poor job and they didn’t give the money back. I can maybe understand the trace coming off but not even cleaning up the paste and replacing it is just ridiculous. It’s just too bad people would probably go hating them and can’t just be happy with knowing a place to not go if you need a repair.
@@Tronicsfix Sounds like the "hate" is warranted in this case. They scammed him at the end of the day.
@@Tronicsfix Understandable. You have to be careful what you say in public about anyone. But if you said "this was repaired by blah blah blah and it's still not working. I found stripped screws, I found poor thermal paste replacement, I found etc", you are just stating the condition and what you found. It's not like you'd have said they do poor quality work, they don't know what they're doing, they suck, etc. Your audience can figure that out pretty quickly for themselves. 😉
@@Tronicsfix it would likely also open you up to legal issues.
Dude you are awesome. Thanks for helping people out like this. And it’s always cool watching you do this stuff. I wish I knew how to do repairs like this.
They helped me out as well since these make good videos. Win-win
You did awesome helping this person out. There has got to be a way to make a case for the BBB on his behalf. These scammers should lose their business license and pay fines on top of buying this kid a brand new console.
Nice work Steve. Its always such a shame when inexperienced repair companies rip people off this way. I can't imagine they will stay active for very long.
Another happy customer. 👍
So cool to see you fixing a viewers console that had been half arsed, went to the trouble of doing a half decent job on fixing traces, then no thermal paste and butchered screws, the guy needs to invest in his tools and he might have got it right.
As somebody that is repairing consoles at home for income. There is absolutely no excuse for the shoddy and terrible work they did to that console. If you don't know what you are doing, don't touch it. I always try to do the best job I possibly can. Plus I treat the consoles and controllers as if they were mine. And if I really can't repair it, I will let you know. Anyway glad you got it fixed for him.
Hi Steve, I finally got around to redoing the thermal paste on my old PS4 thanks to you 5 year old video. Your directions and explanations on your videos are quite helpful! Keep up the good work, and I added just the right amount :)
Great Video! I liked the short jumper you did on the HDMI, by scratching down to the trace. Excellent Job!
Hey thanks! Glad you liked that part. It's a great way to fix stuff like this.
Steve it's so amazing that how nice, clean and caringly you work. It actually makes me not trust any other repair guys haha
very satisfied when see a true pro technician repair a device that was almost destroy by other people. Really appreciate your work man. 👍👍👍.
At our shop, we do lifetime warranty, charge 160 for hdmi, and I clean and repaste the console as well. Also my guess is that a different technician reassembled the console, and possibly accidentally broke that wire because I just cannot image a technician skilled enough to fix an hdmi port like that not repasting.
Always amazing work! Feels good for the owner as it's not a complete loss after all. Keep doing what you do!
Thank you!
Steve, even my wife enjoyed watching this video with me. That is saying something. Very well done.
Wow, thanks! Really appreciate the support
Glad you were able to help him. Awesome!!!
Oh it needs more stickers. The setup with the scope projected onto the flat screen is so nice. I am so jealous.
Love my iFixit kit! Applying the thermal paste is my favorite part. Thanks for the repair videos. Good stuff.
Bro you make every repair look super easy, amazing and these lousy repair shops are laughable, I have been cleaning my consoles, laptops and pc’s on my own without breaking clips properly disassembling them cleaning fans and heatsinks applying now paste and these repair shop people do this for living yet leave their customers with much worse product than before
It's so nice to see a real profissional work, as always, great repair
Great job. I love seeing a professional at work.
Steve I can’t get tired to see you repair consoles, you are a great technician! Again you are an inspiration, i’ve been doing a lot of modification to my consoles and repairs thanks to your channel!
Love to hear that!
the 24 dislikes are from the people at that local shop
Hate when people get ripped off. Watched the video just because I appreciate that you fixed it.
Another excellent repair buddy! top class and always making sure nothing is missing! class act you are!
Hey thanks! Thanks for watching
Nice. This is very kind of you to help your viewer out.
I love your videos, they're informative and you learn to avoid lots of mistakes. I had a brand new 4 month old ps5 and it just stopped video output. Sony isn't answering calls, I've tried hundreds of times, literally. They just hang up. So I had to sell it and that was the second ps5 that crapped out on me. How I wished for a good electronics repair man.
So close to a million subs. You totally deserve it, so here’s hoping it happens soon.
I can't believe that those actual technicians didn't even have the right screwdrivers (not to mention that scary looking thermal paste). Like even someone who isn't a professional at this and tries to fix it themselves will be smart enough to buy the right screwdriver from amazon, or a local shop for like 5 bucks
As a viewer with two left hands (well two in my case) I always find it fascinating to watch. To me it's like watching magic at work. Thanks for creating awesome and entertaining content as always.
I bought an ifixit tool kit about a year ago and it has allowed me to fix a bunch of my own stuff and stuff for my friends, I'm actually getting a box of controllers with stick drift to fix soon, your videos have taught me a lot about electronics repair
Love to hear it! That iFixit kit will get you through a lot of repairs!
@@Tronicsfix it hasn't let down yet
You are the absolute best, dude. I love watching your videos, I always learn a lot!
Great job as always. Glad you could save one more console from bad repair. Sure Grant will be happy to play the Xbox again.
Good job man. I had a local shop do the same thing to me with my samsung edge phone. It sucked because all other shop declined to work on it because (at the time) it was too new and hard to work on. This shop claimed they knew how to fix it and then made it worse by actually breaking the screen and stated they that it was a hard phone to work on. Keep in mind I only needed to have the charging port fixed. So I ended up paying 160 to have then break my screen! They refused to refund and I made sure to warn everyone I knew not to go there.
Dear Steve! You are rescuing gaming consoles and this makes you a hero for me
Hello Tronics Friday! Another beautiful fix Steve.. Keep rocking.. I just can't wait to see my favourite RUclips channel "Tronics Fix" hit 1 million! All the best..🙂
Thank you so much for the support!
I appreciate that you help fix other’s people mistakes. You got mad respect from me
You're the best technician I know..
I always learn new stuff with your videos 😁
Btw I started fixing DS Lite a while ago, and I'm doing quite good with those.
But I have a problem: as my cousin saw my skills, he asked me to repair his 2 PS4s. A Slim version and a PS4 Fat.
He 1st gave me the Slim, and he said that somebody tried to fix it before me, but I think he made it worse.. (He forgot some screws, so I don't think he was a professional one)
My cousin said that the PS4 used to turn on, but it doesn't. It turns on for less than a second and then shuts right off.
Then he gave me the PS4 Fat, but I think I got it worse.
It used to turn on, but the fan did some bad noises and the console won't accept disks (He said that it couldn't even read them).
I 1st opened the console and fixed the disk drive, than I gave the fan to a friend of mine to try and fix it, but I'll talk about that in a second.
After I put all the console together I tested it again, and as the fan was noisy, I put the console vertically, and it worked decently.
Then I put a disk in and it read it just fine, but then.. The console turned off and when I tried to turn it back on, it worked, but the HDMI signal wasn't showing up, so I checked and saw something that I didn't wanna see.
Now it gives me the BLoD.....
You're probably thinking, why wouldn't you replace the fan, did you put new thermal paste?
Well, he didn't wanna spend 30 bucks for a new fan. As I didn't wanna spend 30 bucks of my own pocket for a guy that lets smash his PS4 twice by his parents, I left it like this
And then for the thermal paste.. Well, I couldn't find it in my anywhere house (And I know I should've bought it new before testing again the PS4, so this is 100% my fault)
If you've read all of this..
1st thanks for the attention.
2nd could you pls help me with those?
What should I do? Should I sell the components?
Truly an amazing channel these videos have helped me to do DIY stuff on my consoles of course I don’t also do the hard stuff but it has helped me keep my tech always up to date and fixed
Awesome. I have fixed a previous “repaired by a cousin” PS4 gamepad and I can relate to this…
I really hope the owner went back to the shop and showed them this video and also delivered them a throat punch.
So that's how that little strip bit goes back on...
Looks like I'm pulling mine apart again lol
These videos are awesome. I love when you repair someone's console. If they are like me, they are very attached to it.
Good guy Steve to fix this properly for the customer.
This viewer was lucky that you got your hands on this. Nice repair and also the perfect amount 😁. So many people take stuff apart without any idear what they are doing and some also say they are are repairshop pffff. Have a good one Steve. Is your son also into repairs or not yet? Maybe a father and son stream one day 😉
He is not into them so far. I've been trying to get him on camera but I don't push that much. I don't want him to feel forced. If he ever is it'll be because he wants to do it. It would be fun though
Great work as always!
You're an inspiration good sir and you introduced me to the i-fixit tool kits :D
I had a feeling this would need the perfect amount of thermal paste!
It’s so satisfying to watch how you fix it!❤️🩹🤪🥰
Excellent repair as always :)
I like the little edit at the start with "not only did they NOT fix it" lolol it reminds me of those old youtube poop videos
Glad you could repair that half-assed job. Replacing the stripped screws was a nice touch.
Man your such a good guy wish more ppl was like you
i love this kind of repairs , well done !
Thanks man you make great videos and do repair the right way! Love your videos!
Can't believe that repair shops are doing this type of bodge job.. Cleaning those apu chips is so satisfying too.. My favourite part of any repair
Great work my friend
Wow so unprofessional of them….You fixed it like new again, You always do great work, I watch all of your fix it videos.
You inspired me to go into electronics and microprocessors specialization in college, and i decided i want to have my own repair shop in the future
Thank you so much
I love this channel.. Though I am always in shock when I see a QTip being used to clean old thermal paste lol.
Very nice job Steve!
That was so nice of you the guy should show the video to the place where they ripped him off
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING THANKS FOR SHARING, BLESS YOU.
Good video Steve! I want to get one of those micropencils! I had the pleasure of trying one out about a month ago, it was so nice.
They're awesome!
Imagine messing up that badly and then on top of it not giving a refund what a top guy
Dude, that is pretty awesome of you. So many people just shouldn't work on stuff.
Love the videos! Keep them coming! Stay safe!
Thanks! Will do!
I like Your videos. You make it easy for others to understand how to fix things.. Also unlike A LOT of others, if you forget to do something etc, You point it out.. Great videos!!
Im new here awesome video and thats so cool you would fix his system after he was scammed . I enjoy the videos on repairing systems
Wish I had came across your vids a while ago. I’ve binged them now. In terms of my Xbox one X - mine started running hot and I cleaned it out. Second time I decided to replace the thermal paste, putting the perfect amount on!
when putting the device back together I forgot about the sync/usb ribbon cable and ended up tearing through it as I clipped the case back together. My controller unsynced a few weeks later and I could only play vid wired. The console had been out away now never to be seen again :( wish faulty consoles were cheaper for me just to get this one ribbon cable !
Nice work! Always a good day when a game system is saved!
Great video as always, curious if you’re ever going to restore that taco bell ps4?
Man you are like a real Doctor to me now....
You made a surgery to that xbox.... you are 👏 amazing...
I always enjoy watching your videos nice work dude .
I love watching his videos because he doesn't mess around with you he gets straight to the video, and he makes really quality content. I don't have a broken console but if I did. I'd hit this dude up
Another good video. Thanks for helping others like us.
Just one suggestion. When it is an open die without IHS, we must make sure that entire area of die is covered with a thin layer of TIM before placing the heat sink back. This way we can guarantee that the TIM will cover the entire die and will not create any areas at 'hot spots'. The line method, dot method, etc., are for IHS to heatsink contacts, not really recommended for open die to heat sink contacts.
Your xbox and playstation repair videos are the best.
this is where credit cards are life savers, they screwed up and refused to compensate the customer for the mistake(either refund or correction at their expense), whoever owns that system needs to do a chargeback(at least a partial)
Brilliant video. Simple fix. There should be a place we can all go to name and shame these shops that botch repairs.
I really like this guy a lot...There's something on him that make him nice and I enjoy his videos a lot... Greetings from Austria SIR!
In another life Steve would have been a surgeon 🤣 look at the soldering 😻
Oh you are turning into an old softie... :) Helping others is an amazing talent sir.
love your work!
1 Million subscribers soon brother!
The previous person didn't seem to know what he was doing and that price for not repairing seemed rally pricey!
Could watch this guy all night he’s a legend
Nice fix Steve. It is really annoying that a repair shop is making such a si*y job and charging a lot of money....
Very cool fixing his X-Box, "Ehrenmann" as we would call you in Germany :D
And always with the ""Perfect Amount of Thermal Paste" ^^ i need a tee or Hoodie with that line ;-)
I do need to make some merch with that line!
