In my mind, the reliability of the lasgun is by far the biggest contributing factor to it being picked as the main weapon for Imperial Guard. No moving parts means no wear and no odd places for grime to get into (Barring the magazine well, of course).
But it also helps in logistics. Lasgun batteries probably have a standardized connector, and can be used to power all manner of devices. That's one less thing to keep track of. A platoon low on supplies could disconnect low-priority equipment (Lamps, cooking equipment) to keep fighting, maybe eventually being forced to disable the life support keeping the wounded alive.

there could be a sound when the lasgun is fireing. the exact moment the very veeeeery hot light hits the surrounding atmosphere with some kind of moisture in it, the water would evaporate in an instant and make a crackling sound. like a "plop" not as lloud as a gun shot but still noticable.

It'd be weird if you're used to conventional firearms. You're expecting a kick when there's nothing solid being explosively forced out of the barrel. But you'd get used to it.
If the lasgun is a pulse laser then the sound would be more like someone cracking a whip as the air following along the laser spontaneously combusts and collapses back in. If it is like a real life pulse laser then there shouldn't be a visible beam but a flash of really bright light from the impacted target. Unless there's something in the air to make it visible like smoke, mist, rain, dust, sand, gas, etc. Imagine looking into a flashing strobe light that does more than burning your retinas or those guns from Starship Troopers 2.
Now if hit by the pulse laser then you'll receive feedback from the explosive flash vaporization of the water molecules within your squishy bits. Depending on how powerful the pulse is you might have a bleeding crater or a missing arm and be on your back from the explosive force. Of course that will depend on how close the enemy is for this to happen and power of the shot.
The only reasons I could think of for a lasgun not firing are a drained battery, blocked barrel, or the focusing crystal is either to badly warped from excessive heat or the crystal broke.

Maybe the great discrepancy in lethality in different sources can be blamed on the charge, lower battery and different focus setting making them more of a taser?

A laser would have no recoil, because its projectile has no mass. That would make shooting it supernally accurate. There would be no flinching, bucking, or jerking associated with anticipating recoil and the noise of shooting. The weapon would be _so_ easy to shoot well. Additionally a laser shoots almost perfectly flat. There would be no need to calculate bullet drop. No holdovers. No adjusting for windage or elevation after initial zero out to the maximum effective range of the weapon.
Additiomally, you'd never see the beam move as a "bolt." It would be "on" and "off" moving at the speed of light.
    Now I want one.
    😂
You are right about the damage though. The beam has no mass, so there would be no kinetic damage, only cutting and heat.
While laser weapons are almost impossibly impractical they make for great. sci-fi.
And yeah, that lasrifle is about as long as a limousine. It is definitely set up for trench warfare vs. say clearing houses.
    Fix bayonets and Charge!

@bopaintsminis ah thats cool Bo. I'm well jealous. Firearm ownership is near impossible in UK. Firing shotguns is possible however a rifle impossible and a pistol a distant dream. Australia is close to US and I had a license at home.
