Irukandji Jellyfish - World's deadliest fishing

- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- The Irukandji jellyfish, fish for fish using deadly extendable arms that are covered in venomous stinging cells. As it swims along, this tiny jelly extends its tentacles and twitches them much like a fisher or fly-fisher would to attract prey in the water. The balls of venomous stinging cells (nematocysts) act like a lure and attract fish. When contact is made with the tentacles the venomous harpoons are fired into the prey which paralyses them.

This is the most Aussie thing ever. "I've been stung eleven times and each time I ended up in hospital" . . . if I'd been stung twice, you wouldn't get me back to the beach.
You WERE stung more than twice and still went back Don’t get it
@@lillily1 Quotation marks -- know what they mean?
"I've been stung eleven times and each time I ended up in hospital" .
- that's what's said in the video, not by me. That's why its in quotes, viz: " four score and seven years ago", that's something someone else said, I'm commenting on it.
He wasn’t stung multiple times in the same time or else he would succumb
Heck! He was also stung by Chironex’s, the most venomous creature in life.
Ah I knew this was coming! Keep it up these videos are amazing
The Tall Walnut Only for you ;)
I actually had never heard of the Irukandji jellyfish until recently when I unboxed a brand new watch I got called the Irukandji dive watch. It's modelled after this dangerous little jellyfish in an electric stinger purple colour. I love it so much so of course looked up the jellyfish and found your video. I love it and even more now I know the story of this tough little jellyfish so thank you. Here's my unboxing of the watch: ruclips.net/video/4SlOLyqrnx8/видео.html

11 times?!? Everyone should love their job as much as you, that's passion.
Yep he does love his job and why wouldn't you ;) Life is too short to do anything else :)
+The Nature of Science I kinda know it's rhetorical but made many bad choices and created a poor reality for myself.
We all make bad choices. It's how we deal with them, that counts :)
My boss has Karate chopped me 12 times. I love my job.
I would think if a person was stung one time and experienced the most pain possible (10/10). They would be smart enough to put on some simple protective clothing.
FOUR BUUMMSS!!!
G it pouves out of its tentacles
_Every morning the Irukandji farts the tune to "It's a Mistake"._
As a biology dropout, I love these. Brings back memories.
EddyGurge Awwww that's lovely, to hear :)
We can create body armor that can stop rifle rounds, but why cant we create a body suit to protect against jellyfish stings?
We can (if that's even a serious question). Of course we can. We can build tank armour that stops 155mm High-explosive anti-tank rounds. We can create chain-mail wet-suits that defend the wearer from shark bites. The problem is that we can't yet make them practical, and even if we could, we would not be able to make them affordable, as that would require many people to buy them, and most people want to enjoy swimming freely without wearing chain-mail and a full wet-suit.
Technology like graphene, carbon nanotubes, etc, might change that one day... We'll see.
But, to be honest with you... the first successful commercial use of carbon nano-technology will likely be some weird, kinky sex thing. That's just the way the World works.
Yes you have to wear full proof wet suits. Just be careful how you take it off cause of broken tentacles
We can, its just that nobody wants to put on a full suit before going from the beach into the sea.
Stinger suit : Allow me to introduce myself
What's particularly interesting about these guys is that Irukandji syndrome is almost certainly an unintended side effect from the jellies' point of view. It's useless for hunting OR meaningful defense...the onset is simply too slow. It's something in our bodies reacting in some very strange and potentially catastrophic ways to a venom that is otherwise quite mild.
you are so badass dude! stung eleven times and still doing this awesome job! That is some dedication man!
I read about this jellyfish in a book called "The Thing About Jellyfish" it's an amazing book everyone should read it
ikr I'm reading it right now and I'm so intrigued
I'm reading it right now that's why I came here
Me too!
I finished it I luv the book
i'm reading it right now it's sooo freaking good!!!! It's very moving.
Who else came here from the book: *the thing about jellyfish*
Just me? Ok then 👌
Stung 11 times for a job? Where do I sign up? Programming stings me that many times a day, and the head bashing supplies the pain. Still Australia seems like no no land, great whites, a collection of the most venomous snakes, jack jumpers, salties, box jellyfish, aggressive and venomous spiders.. the bushfire and hurricanes? I think that's nature's way of saying "This is a penal colony" pretty though.
The Australian Box Jellyfish (Chironex Fleckeri) known as the Sea Wasp is the deadliest creature on our Planet. The Australian Box Jellyfish Irukandji is the 2nd deadliest creature on our Planet.
Anyone ever read "the thing about jellyfish"?
Idontdoweedkidsstayinschool Snow me
I came here from that!
So basically the smallest jellyfish in the world is the 2nd most dangerous jellyfish in the world...
That is correct
Yellya Yt and one of the most dangerous in the world that’s for sure...
What would be the first? I think this is the most lethal of all, just touch it and not to mention the pain haha
@@kallanbrooks irukandji is a box jellyfish
Chrionex Fleckeri is the most venomous than Irukandji.
This channel is a terrible travel advertisement for australia
I think every creature on land and the sea around Australia is hellbent on killing you.
You do an awesome job. absolutely amazing!
+Samantha Abakir thanks, appreciate your support!
This is SO COOL! I first learned about this jellyfish from watching Dr Seymour on SmarterEveryDay and it's such a fascinating organism! Being a biochemistry graduate, I'd love to know the mechanism behind how the venom works. And how does the jellyfish avoid stinging _itself_?
+ChirrupForScience thanks, I realise the reply is WAY late, but our latest video may answer some of your questions :-)
Holy shit. Jamie saymore, and who ever makes these does a real good job of them, and it's really interesting to watch. I love them. Looking forward for the box jellyfish.
+CoryBaker92 Thanks for the feedback, you're a star! It's nice to know that we're on the right track. Hope you enjoyed the box jellyfish one we just released.
3:01 And the Cousin is the Infamous Big Box Jellyfish Chironex Fleckeri A.K.A. Suckerpunch B.K.A. Seawasp is the more venomous creature on our planet.
This guy's medical bills though...
Heathcare is free...
This is Australia m8 we don't burden people with medical bills after being hospitalized
Did anybody else come here because the book 'the thing about jellyfish'
no
Came to learn about this jellyfish from "The Thing about Jellyfish"
Prof. Jamie, do you think you could upload the raw footage of you in hospital from the Irukandji? I know it's a bit intrusive, but uh... that's the nature of science!
Wait, I know this question, my uncle Rick?!?!
I read the book called The Thing about Jellyfish and I had Jamie in it
1 mouth 4 bums sounds like a nasty shock site.
I was about 7 when I discovered the Irukandji jellyfish watching a documentary about "the deadlist jellyfish" (unfortunately I've seen only the last two) with Dr. Seymour... I was AMAZED and actually I'm really glad to have discovered this channel
Thanks for showing how amazing nature is!
3:00 Chrironex Fleckeri Box Jellyfish is the most venomous creature on our planet. Irukandji Box Jellyfish is the second venomous on our Planet.
I would have the great DISPLEASURE of experiencing irukandji syndrome!
We hear you and Jamie knows the pain all too well!
Shit I will take my chances with the Australian Box Jellyfish Chironex Fleckeri atleast the pain go away in 2 minutes and I die rather being in excruciating pains for weeks possibly die anyway but most people survives Irukandji stings
Like being ran over by an 18 wheeler!
me too in 2013, my 16th birthday, wont forget being air lifted of the island and tourists all taking photos as i was carried on the stretcher 😂
Wouldn't the Irukandji be more potent than the Chironex if it was the same size as it's cousin? Since a tiny sting from a Fleckeri only causes scarring, but no hospital or long-lasting symptoms like the Irukandji?
The thing about the Irukandji-Syndrome-causing box jellies is that their venom is _initially_ quite mild. Many victims don't even notice the initial sting. It's just that an hour or two _after_ the sting, through a mechanism that isn't fully understood yet, the secondary effects kick off, and they're _evil_.
Meanwhile, with a Chironex sting you _definitely_ know that you've been stung, and the effect is very, very rapid. Many fatalities occur when victims suffer from circulatory collapse or heavy cramping while still trying to get back to shore and simply drown.
The Australian Box Jellyfish Chironex Fleckeri known as the (Sea Wasp) is the deadliest creature on our Planet. Chironexs can kill you in 2 minutes. The Australian Box Jellyfish Irukandji is the 2nd deadliest creature on our Planet. After getting stung by Irukandji (painless, or mosquito bite sensation) it take 15-30 minutes for the venom to reach thru your Lymphatic system (lymphs nodes) will the painful effects kick in, also in some cases Irukandji Jellyfish can cause Irukandji Syndrome which is unique and devastating on the human body. Irukandji syndrome can last for days, months even years.
If Irukandji were the size of Chironexs the moment your stung you die instantly. Then Irukandji would be the most lethal.
So, who is his cousin? You should at least link trough to that video..
Irukandji's cousin is The Australian Box Jellyfish Chrionex Fleckeri Biggest of the Box jellyfish species is the world's most venomous.
I tell you Jamie, you must be a glutton for punishment.
0:33 it less looks like an irukandji jellyfish in my opinion
The box jellyfish is more deadly
Yup Chrionex Fleckeri
I like irukandji jellyfish.
does wearing clothes help to protect?
_Every morning the Irukandji farts the tune to "It's a Mistake"._
For Marine Biology class.
That’s my Aussie boy, brave daring.
Jellyfish in space - Kevin MacLeod. Cool song
Hey guys if you are intrested in this jellyfish read the book its called The Thing About Jellyfish
you tagged the a wrong instagram ;)
You are our hero! Our resident mermaid can be a bit tech challenged sometimes. Thanks for the heads up buddy. Went back and fixed all the links :)
I would have went with naming the channel Science of Nature. Unless it was taken.
I read the book, the thing about jellyfish
I swear I have swum shirtless with these thinking they were box jellyfish
Why does Australia have the most deadliest creatures on Earth???
yes, ask god.
i rly am interested in this jelly fish but i keep seeying the box jelly when i search it up
I had a kidney stone. Is it as painful as that, cos if it is i don't wanna....
Good job getting the capturing it on camera😱🤯☄️
Piss on most pain ever, i use dem boxy jellies as condoms.
Jelly fish are alien, man
How does one go about collecting venom from this jelly-fish for science/research purposes??
+Lakshminarayanan Krishnan its a reasonable simple process once you know how. We published a paper on it many years ago see
Carrette,T., & Seymour, J.E. (50%), 2004.A Rapid and Repeatable Method for Venom Extraction from CubozoanNematocysts. Toxicon. 44: 135-139
Go out and jump into a school of them! You're bound to catch one, and probably collect some venom as well. No I'm kidding, become a toxicology major!
Lakshminarayanan Krishnan the better question is... WILL IT BLEND!!!
Gleen - Roblox & more smoothie perhaps?
Lakshminarayanan Krishnan I'll pass Hahahah!
really fazinating video and jellyfish
4 bumms? Just say Bottom it,s more fun to say
THIS IS CRAAAAZYYYYY
It a box jelly
The Head ? This is a Jellyfish, Dood :D
So is the box jelly fish its cousin ?
They are related
PLUMS!
I got stung by an Irukandji 😒
I thought jellyfish live forever unless eaten or getting a disease
Only the immortal jellyfish lives forever look it up on youtube or google
A. Jelly has 4 bumbs
like it
so swimming in beaches near Cairns is not recommended?
Highly unadvisable during the Spring/Summer Months. October until April is a no-no.
The beginning of June thru the end of September it's safe to swim that generation died off and the new generation starts back up in October
2:15
You guys are so mixed up. That jellyfish is a box jellyfish. An irukandji is 5 millimetres long.
Oh... Ok, I'll choose to believe a random RUclipsr than a professional who studies these for a living...
@Ben how about you look it up for yourself instead of choosing to believe one person or another?
@Enderlord A species doesnt have to be box OR irukandji. Lots of Box jellyfish are Irukandji
Also, some irukandji can be over a foot long.
The Australian Box Jellyfish Chironex Fleckeri known as the (Sea Wasp) is the deadliest creature on our Planet Chironexs can kill you in 2 minutes. The Australian Box Jellyfish Irukandji is the 2nd deadliest creature on our Planet.
I so want one as a pet!
And what is its cousin's name?
Lol
+Antilli the boxed jelly fish
The cousin name is called the Australian Box Jellyfish Chironex Fleckeri known as the (Sea Wasp) is the deadliest creature on our Planet Chironexs can kill you in 2 minutes. It's cousin The Irukandji Box Jellyfish is the 2nd deadliest creature on our Planet. The Australian Species of Irukandji are the most leathal than other Irukandji. But the Chironex Fleckeri is the most leathal hands down imagine screaming your lungs out in agonizing and excruciating pain worst then giving child birth you begging for death for 120 (2mins) then you die. You might even pass out before you die because the pain is so great.
0:14 I counted, there are 24 eyes there. Thank me later
Don't they have nematocysts on there head/umbrella?
Yes they do, unlike the Big Box Jellyfish which don't.
It makes me think of brain cells a little bit.
Irukandji is such fragile creatures probably the reason for the stingers on its bell.
I swear there is some alien activity in the ocean
