Jackson Browne sang this as a young kid full of gusto and his whole life ahead....Bob Schneider sings it as if he is old and looking back at the years all spent....nice complimentary cover.
A good friend who went over and had a ghastly experience with skin cancer gave me this song. Much love forever Mike H ❤ RIP (you changed me for the good)
Bob Schneider took a really good song and turned it into a really beautiful song. Normally not a big fan of remakes but this one was smashed out of the park. Thanks for posting.
I'm in agreement. .have always love JB's song but this....Awesome! is all I can say. hammock song, cool drink of lemonade or wine or beer, sunny skies, gentle breeze....
+stellav45 It's like listening to two completely different songs, both extremely well done.Just shows what a powerful songwriter Jackson Browne truly is,his songs could make even me sound like a star,almost.....
Search out him on RUclips he write 1000 of songs. Most never see releasing but he plays every Monday night at a bar called Saxon Pub here in Austin, Texas. He is a very talented musician that is not looking to go main stream because he wants control on what he writes.
its Christmas eve..just browsing tunes and this popped and I hit play...im pissed that i'm 78,965 hits too late..i wish I was the 1st...great rendition
"Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive; trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive." Tribute to one of my Top 3 of all time: "Jackson Browne" What a voice Bob has! ...always a favorite of mine.
Jackson Browne, of course, did a stellar job performing this song, written by him in 1976 when he was getting close to turning 30. As he sang it, it had an urgency that a young man of that age might feel. Bob’s cover is that of an older man who has had time to ponder that urgency and put it in its rightful place. It’s melancholy and thoughtful as though it is begging for one final verse, one written with the telescope turned around and looking backwards at that life lived urgently seeking something, and discovering what it was, and what it wasn’t.
***Update*** I've reached out to Spotify and inquired about why only 5 songs from the 2014 2-disc Tribute album called: Looking into You: A Tribute to Jackson Browne are available. This song is on disc #1, song 3 and is greyed out unfortunately. Will update as I get information.
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-oh-one I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on Running on, running on empty Running on, running blind Running on, running into the sun But I'm running behind Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own I don't know when that road turned, into the road I'm on Running on, running on empty Running on, running blind Running on, running into the sun But I'm running behind Everyone I know, everywhere I go People need some reason to believe I don't know about anyone but me If it takes all night, that'll be all right If I can get you to smile before I leave Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through Looking into their eyes I see them running too Running on, running on empty Running on, running blind Running on, running into the sun But I'm running behind Honey you really tempt me You know the way you look so kind I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find Running into the sun but I'm running behind
Been jackson browne fan since Saturate Before Using, Late for the Sky, For Every Man, Running on Empty, The Pretender an so on and on.... but i have to be honest and admit that Bob is a level behind. No disrespect but i can live with his (bob) music though...
Having seen JB many times, Running on Empty is one of the few fast tempo songs, usually reserved toward the ends of concerts. Not an awful song, but, IMO, the intent of the original song was missed. I think Schneider should have done a tribute to some of the more introspective songs like Song for Adam.
Long time Jackson Browne fan here. It's rare for a cover to exceed the original, but this one does. Beautiful.
Jackson Browne sang this as a young kid full of gusto and his whole life ahead....Bob Schneider sings it as if he is old and looking back at the years all spent....nice complimentary cover.
It focuses on the amazing lyrics, an excellent tribute.
Perfect...I am a big fan of Bob's...coming from a musician to a musician.
Soulful departure from the original...very well done.
A good friend who went over and had a ghastly experience with skin cancer gave me this song. Much love forever Mike H ❤ RIP (you changed me for the good)

Agree 100%.

I've been listening to this song for 37 years and this is the best cover I have heard.Actually it gives Jackson Browne a hot run for best version.

This song finally makes sense listening to his version :)
Loved Jackson Browne since 1977. I'd never heard of Bob Schneider. I have now. Lovely interpretation of a classic song.

Bob and his music are treasures! And I agree, it is a great cover of an already great song

What a voice Bob has! ...always a favorite of mine.
If you know Bob then you know how much he put into this and it's magic
this is beyond great.
Better than the original, IMO - and the original is wonderful
Thank you Chick McGee from the Bob and Tom show for making me aware of Bob Schneider and his music it’s right up my alley of the music I love
Bob's album "Lonelyland" is a must listen.
Yess !!
A more mature and road weary reading - and dare I say, better - than the original.

Bob Schneider who knows this amazing awesome singer ...here he covers in his own special way Jackson Brown!
An ubderrated star...spread the word!
An anthem turned into a dirge with the Ray Conniff singers in chorus. Truly a creation.
The song would be better without the chorus.
pleeeeeease put on spotify! i need this in my life
I know right. I think this was a collaboration tribute album
“I don’t know when the road I’m on turned into the road I’m on’….
I love the original, and I love this. For completely different reasons, and that's okay with me.
***** Different vibe to this version, I agree tho. both are fab.
BobSchneiderVEVO Nailed it! Love your voice on this song, you really do it justice! #Fabulous
Wow, amazing cover of a classic. Its was nice to be able to understand all the words to this great song!
Bob did a INCREDIBLE remake of this classic song! LOVE it! Awesome. The vid is soooo kewl, too! Incredible perception of the lyrics. :)
sweet cover
Brilliant version of a great song.
Bob did an excellent job. What an amazing talent.
Another great video - thank you!
Wow. I love this!
Just how I feel at this crazy moment.
I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on
Amazing vid of a classic song. The lyrics are amazing. Forgot them! Thanks for reminding me. Take care. Smile. :) I'm gone....
Perfect!
Brilliant.
What a great tribute to the orginal!
I like how this version sounds so much more tired and world-weary than the original.
A critical difference between Browne and Schneider on the line "...the road I'm on now..."
A Great compliment to Jackson Browne
I enjoyed this song.
Thank you.
Sure wish this tribute song was available on Spotify.

R.I.P. Jared....you were the first to share this with me. I miss you and love you. 4-19-2023 @ 11:11am.
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-oh-one
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on
Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I'm running behind
Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned, into the road I'm on
Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I'm running behind
Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, that'll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes I see them running too
Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I'm running behind
Honey you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind
You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find
Running into the sun but I'm running behind
Made me smile. ...
Great cover and video.
Love it.

Pretty voice
Bob thanks its a cut-throat insdusty but Ive been around and think you can survive.
I love/this cover ,the original saonds like running on NOS.
That is hilarious and spot on
cool...
very different but good
Good version but missed out the best line in my opinion - 'I don't know about anyone but me!'
all credit go to both, Brown and Schneider.

this version is better tbh
Pues lo siento ,pero no me gusta la voz de Bob para esta canción. :-(
Not my cup of tea, as his voice is too Dave Matthews-ish for me. Sounds like it belongs on a tv drama.
Ugh!. Schneider is making a tribute to himself rather than Jackson Browne.
Perhaps you should elaborate. I personally think its a wonderful tribute to JB.
Having seen JB many times, Running on Empty is one of the few fast tempo songs, usually reserved toward the ends of concerts. Not an awful song, but, IMO, the intent of the original song was missed. Thanks. Nice to know some people like you don't think other people should have a different opinion w/o being critical of them.
