  • Hi everybody. The Buddy Rich left hand technique has been and still is a commonly discussed topic in the drum world, particularly in education. There are several videos on RUclips describing the mechanics of this technique but rarely is it demonstrated in a musical application. It also reinforces, for me, the importance of listening. I was 10 years old when I first started using this technique. That might be hard to believe but I was obsessed with Buddy at the time. All I had was audio. RUclips did not exist until I was in my early twenties and I didn't grow up with instructional books or VHS tapes. I was just listening to Buddy recordings and trying to create that sound, that 'one handed roll' sound. It wasn't until much later, after I had been playing for several years and was now working, that I got a chance to see videos of Buddy. I was pleased to discover that what I had developed in my left hand, was more or less the Buddy technique. Maybe not as fast or as smooth and with a bit more movement but the mechanics were there and the sound was there. When you start out, it sounds like broken doubles. As you develop it, you'll start to be able to 'smooth it out' and connect those doubles in a consistent stream. Buddy would demonstrate the isolated left hand often in solos. Let me know your thoughts? And if you find this video of value... Leave comments, like, sub and all that. Thank you. Enjoy! Jonathan.
