  • This may be a form of listening that you’ve never engaged in or it may be something that you haven’t practiced in a while but it can make a huge difference in your ability to produce the sounds you want when you want to. We’ll share how we approach critical listening in the context of drum sounds.

I'm learning to tune into my snare drum and focusing on what I can do to make it sound better. All great advice and thank you for taking time to make these videos.

Well, it finally happened. My head hurts because of what you’ve given me to think about. 🙂
It’s so easy to fall into the trap of what sounds good and what sounds bad, rather than figure out where the hell the sounds are coming from in the first place.

I was going to say pretty much exactly what Cody said at the end. This really IS part of the essence of making music! Knowing what sounds we're making and how they're produced is part of being a musician. I know scores of guitar players who work on their technique, but also work extensively with their pedals, so they know what the good sounds are, and how to get them. We drummers ought to be no different. I spend so much of my practice time with either headphones or ear protection, but sometimes--deafness be damned!--I just jam and listen to how my drums and cymbals sound.
Thanks, Ben and Cody, for another dose of enlightenment.

Can you suggest one of your videos that deals with the toms activating the snare? I've tried to find one, but your library is very large and I was unable to locate. I love the way my snare sounds after using your techniques, and I actually love the sound on my toms, but I end up cranking them up to get rid of the snare rattle or I crank up the snare itself. I know I'm not doing something right. Tnx for the videos, they've really helped.

with a limited amount of time for tuning & practicing i try to get as much as possible out of it and thanks to your unique approach - let's call it the unbiased mindful trying & listening - I think I get empowered to enjoy also the boring moments, f.e. head changes, because it is a challenge and an opportunity to get a good sound and a good feeling in that sitation. Thank you a lot!

Well...i lissen like that all the time, when i'm lissening to recorded music.....and live even more....so i think, that a pritty normal thing for a musician....but for the longest time in my live as a drummer, there was no Internet,in the beginning we had records and cassettes, later CDs and Videotapes....so with less food you maybe learn better to use what you have....and be more active yourself...than to wait till someone shows you all in tini steps...
You've got to lissen to learn, and you've got to learn to lissen,if you ever wanna know ,all that stuff you're missin'.....Dr.John/Television.....what a nice lyric...
