Man, I'm so disappointed in my fellow Babymetal fans for all the hate in the comments. The video has even got more dislikes than likes, and all you did was politely give us your honest opinion. I've always hated how most reaction videos are just sellouts, sucking up to the fans to get those sweet views, and here you are, doing exactly what you are supposed to do, and getting shot down for it. Very sad. So you don't like power metal. Big deal. Babymetal has 41 tracks across 3 albums, and only maybe 5 or 6 are power metal. Their music is actually incredibly diverse, and there are more songs just as hard (or harder) than "Catch Me If You Can", and many of them with less poppy vocals as well.
Do you think you could do me a personal favour, and just listen to one more song before you give up on Babymetal completely? No need to make a video of you reacting to it. Just click on this link when you have a few minutes to spare: ruclips.net/video/HPAmQ0vsmGw/видео.html
Not saying that you will necessarily love that particular song (although you probably will), but it will at the very least show you that your picture of Babymetal is very incomplete. They go full hip hop in "BxMxC" and full prog metal in "Tales of the Destinies". Not everything sounds like the two songs you've listened to so far.
So if you ever do want to try to react to them ever again, then here are three songs (one from each album) that you are more likely to approve of:
    Babymetal Death: ruclips.net/video/jRc9dbgiBPI/видео.html
    Sis. Anger: ruclips.net/video/BZLZcoWZKN0/видео.html
    Kagerou: ruclips.net/video/GTUOyNHpvZY/видео.html
If you are still with us at this point, then maybe we could get back to a few of the old fan favorites:
Rondo of Nightmare (with the Mischief of the Metal Gods intro): ruclips.net/video/8WBDiLMNZcE/видео.html
Megitsune (a music video this time): ruclips.net/video/cK3NMZAUKGw/видео.html
    Headbanger: ruclips.net/video/QEsOaMbNFww/видео.html
And with "Headbanger" I think we have come back to a song that's actually somewhat similar to "Catch Me If You Can". So maybe we can call it a full circle, or something. Only 32 more to go (plus a few covers)!

So, it is a fair chance he will take another one he do not like. So, maybe it is for the best. It did not sound like he was all that interested in the heavy parts either. So, let the guy be.

Here's the issue: Babymetal is purposefully uplifting. It's part of their mission statement. If you need Metal to be dark and angry, you're not going to like them. I am tired of how dark Metal has become, how there aren't very many singers anymore. Babymetal is refreshing and has made me excited again about "Metal".

  • @willemgreyling5857
    @willemgreyling5857 4 года назад +30

"I don't judge anybody's music. I don't say 'This is trash' or whatever" and then a few mins later: "This is one of the worst shits I have ever heard in this genre". You clearly don't like the uplifting positive spin they put on metal which is fine. There are plenty of dark/broody/angry metal for you to enjoy which I don't get or can't appreciate. I am tempted to suggest reacting to Rondo of Nightmare which is a bit darker, but I think it would be better to just move on to another band you relate to better.
When the drummer is going apeshit, the guitars are being shredded, you have pyrotechnics going off and three people are riding the horses of the apocolypse into battle, and the reaction is "This is not metal", I don't think anything Babymetal does will ever fall into your definition of metal or what you enjoy about metal and that is totally cool.

Go for Resistance! Resistance! Our hearts are one. If you believe in your way go on even if you have to forge your own path! Forever! Forever! The hot Metal spirit burns in the depths of our hearts. It is our Resistance."
Hi Grumpy Nerd! Thanks for your honesty. It's fine if you don't like BABYMETAL, I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm not really sure you gave the song a chance. The reason why it sounds like an "anime soundtrack" to you is because they sing in Japanese, in fact this is a criticism I have with a lot of reactors who say "it sounds like an anime song". Almost all "anime songs" are just normal Japanese songs, not specifically made for the show they're chosen for. Also, this songs guitar arrangement was done by Herman Li and Sam Totman of DragonForce, who also played it for the studio version. I suppose you may not like power/speed metal as well, and that's also fine. You also say the song is very "poppy". I suppose if you also consider DragonForce to be pop then that's your opinion, however this song is pure metal, perhaps just not a genre of metal you like.
When I hear this song, I don't hear an "poppy anime song", I hear a DragonForce song sung in Japanese, and it's alright if you don't like that, but if that's not what you heard, if you are stuck on the "anime song" aspect, then it's possible you may not be giving the music a fair shake.

Wow. I mean, wow. This was something. I don't know if you genuinely disliked this as much as it seems you did, or if you were just out to troll us and prepared all the hate in advance? You certainly start off very aggressively toward your viewers and are instantly dismissive of the song, even before it starts! I've watched hundreds of reactors watch this and I've never seen anyone dismiss Dragonforce as 'too poppy'. It makes me wonder if you had pre-prepared put-downs for BABYMETAL and didn't feel you could deviate from your script? You had all the cliché BABYMETAL put-downs - sounds like an anime song, it's too poppy, it's not metal. If I'd been playing Metal Elitist Bingo I'd have had a full house.

Yeah, no problem if that one isn't for you and no harm done with an honest opinion, you're not trashing it, it just isn't your sort of metal ... I did wonder if that might happen. The guitar arrangements for this were written (and played on the studio version) by Herman Li and Sam Totman of DragonForce and this is very much a speed/power metal song, as it would be with their involvement. I think this was most recommended because of the performance more than the song itself and to show how a 17 year old and two 15 year olds could control a crowd of, in this instance, 20,000 people.
As we said before, every song they do is different. I think there are many other songs in their catalogue that you would like/enjoy more, so I'll give you a couple of links:
    - 'BABYMETAL Death' live at Legend 1997 a show from December 2013 celebrating the lead singer's 16th birthday) usually their opening number as the few lyrics are basically them introducing themselves, but used on this occasion to close the show ruclips.net/video/jRc9dbgiBPI/видео.html
    - 'Headbanger' live at Legend 1997 again ruclips.net/video/QEsOaMbNFww/видео.html
    - 'Rondo of Nightmare' with 'Mischiefs of the Metal Gods' instrumental intro live at Budokan, Black Night (this is a Su-metal solo, so just her singing with the Kami Band, no Yui or Moa) ruclips.net/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/видео.html
    - 'Sis Anger' - a Black BABYMETAL song (no Su-metal, this is a Yuimetal and Moametal duet), arguably BABYMETALs heaviest song instrumentally, but with the contrast of Yui's and Moa's vocals. This is live at the Tokyo Dome with a sell out crowd of 55,000 people. www.dailymotion.com/video/x5nx7sk

"BABYMETAL is pretty dull" -> find me some band that is less dull and let's have a debate. When your composers are some of the best in the business, when your musicians are some of the best musicians in Japan and when your albums have - prog metal, pop, hip/hop, funk, electro, drumnbass, death metal, black metal, latino, hindi, eurobeat, rap, power metal, power ballads, alternative metal, nu-metal, dubstep, metalcore, symphonic and a tons more i'm forgetting - That's not what I'd call dull :P.
I have seen the like/dislike ratio and have been anxious to watch this tbh :D.
I can understand not liking the music, this song isn't in my top list but the performance is insane and that's the whole package we want you to see. I agree with you saying that this song isn't all that but the performance itself is a sight to see. I'm sure we'll find songs that you like more :). I'm thinking DEATH at Legend 97 or Sis Anger at TD. Try those ;). There's a song for everybody from BABYMETAL. 99% of the metalheads that reacted to this loved it, you're one of the 1% and that's fine ! You shouldn't be shat on for having a different opinion, that's never good. Overall honest and good reaction, so you get my like ! Cheers :).

@@sana-cm7oc There's a difference between not liking something and calling it "dull". I can accept not liking BABYMETAL but to suggest it's dull means you have a very very very very very high standard for things that are uncommon/original/surprising/diverse/unexpected. Wether you like this band or you don't, you can not argue against the fact that they fit those criteria; therefore they can be polarizing but not 'dull' - on the contrary.

It's ok to be honest.... there are a lot of fake reactors out there who are just going through the motions to get the views.
BABYMETAL are pioneering a new sub-genre of metal....it's a deliberate fusion of metal and J-Pop. This is something innovative, it's not been done before and their music is bringing in a lot of new fans who would not normally listen to metal. BABYMETAL are like a gateway drug which opens up non-metal fans' minds to the world of rock and metal, and it also works in the other direction too.....getting a lot of metal "purists" to break out of their normal doom and gloom mindset and let a little fun and happiness into their lives with BABYMETAL's catchy pop choruses.
Some of BABYMETAL's songs are a LOT more poppy....their breakthrough video "Gimme Chocolate" has had over 100M views....it's about 75% pop to metal but it has a killer shred solo in the middle! There are so many types of metal out there, black metal, speed metal, thrash metal, death metal, power metal, prog metal...even pirate metal! (BABYMETAL have a pirate metal song on their new album....it's terrible btw! lol).....but my point is that there's room for them all.
If nobody tries to push the boundaries, metal will just stagnate and stay in the same old rut that it has been in for decades.
Other Japanese girl metal bands are playing safe and keeping to the standard metal formula..... Band Maid are very good, so are LoveBites but neither are breaking any new ground: LoveBites are essentially a female version of Iron Maiden.
Many metal musical icons have shown support for BABYMETAL: Metallica, Judas Priest, Dream Theater, Dragonforce, Slayer, Korn, Rob Zombie...they all "get it". BABYMETAL are admittedly more theatrical than most other rock or metal bands...personally (to use a historical comparison) I'd put them at the Meat Loaf/Kiss end of the spectrum...both of those acts were heavily derided when they first came out, but went on to conquer the world... just as BABYMETAl are doing today. Example: a recent (very positive) BABYMETAL reaction video from a non-metal viewer has just appeared from Nigeria!!! (Check out my Babymetal Reactions playlist!)
Please give BABYMETAL one more try.....here they are at the UK Download 2018 Metal Festival (in new more "mature" costumes... and extra backing dancers!).... playing in front of approx. 80,000 appreciative "mainstream" metal fans:
"Distortion" ruclips.net/video/FzgU3W5ZgzU/видео.html ....hope this one floats your boat! :)

This song won a lot of “metal song of the year” awards. As mentioned no two BabyMetal songs are alike. Others to try are Legend of 1997 Head Banger and Karate the official video.
Here is the thing, other major metal bands love them, love to sneak on stage and play with their band. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have performed Breaking the Law on stage with them. Rod Halford has performed Painkiller with them.
In this song the girls were 17 and 15 and the lead singer Su parted the crowd like Moses parting the Red Sea. Name me an other group 17 and 15 that could have put on such a performance

  • @MacTaipan
    @MacTaipan 4 года назад +17

I think the reason why this song is recommended a lot is not so much the song itself but the presentation, the energy and the crowd reaction. It's not one of my favourite songs, but I love watching this performance (or being in the crowd, of course). But if this song is not heavy enough and too poppy for you, then BABYMETAL will never be your thing. Putting uplifting melodies and lyrics, cute dancing and captivating smiles into Metal is BABYMETAL's defining feature, so if you are not susceptible to that, they are not for you.
Everybody has their own taste, and that's good, as long as you respect others.
I'm getting a bit tired of the "sounds like anime" argument, though. I think the reason for people saying that is mainly because anime is the only thing where they get in contact with the Japanese language. So everything with Japanese language (and particularly female voices) sounds like anime to them. Also, even though I'm not even an anime fan, I don't understand why you are saying "this sounds like anime music" like that would make it impossible to appreciate. Is that a bad thing in itself?
I'm a bit suprised you hate the song that much, but as I said, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and you are not an a** about it and even find some nice words to say about some aspects, so you are forgiven. ;-)
    Edit:
Just read your pinned comment about the fan reaction. I almost feel like apologizing on behalf of the fans. I always thought the majority were open and reasonable. To be honest, I fail to understand how a closed minded person could even become a BABYMETAL in the first place. It's against everything they stand for. Many of us have been defending them against attacks by closed-minded metalheads for years, so it's sad to see some of us are no better at all.

How they were created, how they overcame so much adversity (not just the usual music business adversity, but real personal tragedies) and ended up being legitimately recognized as one of the top live acts in the world .... BABYMETAL fans are very protective of the girls as they've literally seen them grow up ... they're like family ... so they can maybe be forgiven for being a bit 'over-protective'!!?

I`ve been a metal fan for 20 years. I started with Linkin Park and later I discovered even more awesome bands ( aspecially those from Sweden , Norway , Finland ) but when I first heard this band I was skeptical I have to admit , but after I listen to their albums I was blown away by thier music because it`s different and also metal as hell and cute as a puppy at the same time. This band is the perfect blend of all genres and this is the reason maybe everyone loves them so much.

You obviously don't get the whole point of Babymetal at all which I understand. It's very different and can be hard to grasp. It's common for people to be less than impressed the first time but start to understand it and appreciate it with more listens but since you appreciate it less on the second go-around it is apparent Babymetal is not for you. You have started mocking them for 'riding ponies' instead of seeing the obvious, riding horses into battle, and nit-picking them for being too poppy when they are a fusion of pop and metal so I don't see a point in you trying another song. I don't mean to criticize you for not liking them. It's not for everybody, I'm just suggesting you will be wasting your time if you try more videos.

So now that we know you're not a fan of speed or power metal, I can suggest a few songs you may actually enjoy. This performance is mostly the guitar work and the visual aspect. But if you want heavy shit, I got you.
    Akatsuki - Live -- ruclips.net/video/g2372C5PJLM/видео.html
Death Legend 1997 (No this was not filmed in '97, it's the year the lead singer was born) (This is the most heavy, and its mostly an instrumental, with very minimal vocals, but its super heavy) -- ruclips.net/video/jRc9dbgiBPI/видео.html

I would react to Death Legend 1997 first cuz I believe thats the heaviest of their popular songs, but any of these you can choose cuz they all heavy, much heavier than Road of Resistance. One last thought, if you don't like a song that's fine, but don't make the rest of us feel bad by saying it's a shit song, thats just rude. I didn't read too much into the comments and those I saw were ok, but I'm sorry if some people gave you grief over your reaction - the thing with Babymetal is the absurd range of musical styles they cover so it's quite normal that not everybody will take to that....I mean they are one of my favourite bands at the moment and I don't love everything either LOL
Maybe part of the negative reaction is down to context: Babymetal had to fight an uphill battle to be treated as a legit band and not just as a gimmicky fabricated jpop act with metal packaging (due in part to the fact they have their roots in the j-pop system), and still have to fight that battle to this day, and they've been around for almost 10 years now..... more than the fact that you didn't like it, my guess is your referring to RoR as essentially "poppy trash" (I'm paraphrasing) sounds a lot like the stuff said by metal "purists" who claimed that Babymetal was anathema and basically the death of metal and the worst band to ever exist (and I'm keeping it PG - the actual comments weren't)
This does *not* justify any abuse you may have been subjected to!!!!!! but context might explain some of the strong reactions (and then some people are just abusive ***holes and these exist in any fandom unfortunately)

BABYMETAL is a cult...and a hell of a lot of their fans (The One, as they're known, which grates grammatically being used as a plural, but I get the sentiment) won't hear a single negative word against them. Well, fuck that shit. I love them - and I'm a 58 year old Rock, Metal and Techno fan who's seen Sabbath, Zep, Floyd, Zappa, Neil Young, Underworld and a thousand other bands - but I don't expect everyone to enjoy them in the same way. Or at all. I can see from your continual nodding that the music appeals but I get why you don't like the vocals so much. Not sure why watching the girls isn't a joy for you too but personally I find watching them better than some bloke who isn't a tenth as appealing on the eyes. Same for the vocals. I like the incongruity of Su's sweet vocals over the usual growling and yelling of Metal. I also enjoy the whole cognitive dissonance that you get from trying to take in their look and sound while listening to most excellent Metal. For a really solidAF Japanese Rock sound, especially live, I'd have to recommend Band Maid. Anyway, hope you keep on reacting and fuck the haters because they could have just moved on. • @mickyart
    @mickyart 4 года назад +5

Well, the "love it or hate it" thing it's just like seeing things black or white... remember there are a whole range of shades of grey in between. After your reaction to "Catch Me If You Can" (my dear dear song) I would be another one shouting "You GOT TO react to Road Of Resistance Live in Japan!!!!" because this is one of the most impressive moments that are available out there and the crowd is so so awesome that it's a must. But Babymetal has a lot more impressive moments, great awesome entertainment moments. So I get it if you don't like the music that much (I for one am with you in the I-like-the-previous-one-better ... me too, I elected "Catch me" as my number one song from BM) ...
Nevertheless, I love this song and I love the whole thing, the music, the crowd, the dancing, everything!! And I really don't care much for what is "metal" and what is not, like there is some kind of standard way of being "metal" (that's actually my only negative point about this reaction... "riding the pony is not metal") ... I still remember to listen to Motorhead and Venom and the Saxon/Maiden/Priest fans saying that Motorhead and Venom are too noisy, too punk! Thats not Metal! ... so, things change, for me Babymetal is one of a kind, maybe others will follow, but I really doubt it, (knowing how this whole thing begun and how it evolved ) I think they will always have a unique legacy and I consider myself very fortunate to have been curious enough about a band called "Babymetal" and check out "Catch Me" and been blown away. I really love that first album. The second (where RoR is from) is awesome as well and there are millions of people that don't like it, that's fine, there are some more who like it a bit, others really like this song but not the others, others hate it... that's just fine. Relax! Babymetal can't be for eeeeeeveryone, nor Slayer, nor Dark Throne, nor AC/DC, nor Justin Beaver :-P ,,, Thumbs up for this reaction. I differ in opinion but I'm glad to ear some "whys" someone else don't go for this...

When you like something, doesn't mean everybody has to like it too. If someone dislike your thing, just let them be. It just not meant for them. No need to force them to like it. They might have an opinion about it, whether you like it or not, but thats make it human. Try to be open minded guys. TheGrumpyNerd just trying to be open by trying people's recommendation, but unfortunately he found that it was not his cup of tea, and it's totally fine.
The hating doesn't help any bands to get more people to support them because sometime they just need more time to get into it. With the hating, they will just close the door straight to any possibilities. So guys, calm down.
So, about BABYMETAL. They describe their music themself as Cute Metal, so thats why you still can found bits of "poppy" to most of their musics. They were trying to make metal music could be enjoyed by not just metal heads but kids, teenager and other ordinary people. As they embark on their journey, they found that metal music might not be for everyone, so they want to introduce people to metal genre with their music as a gateway. Kinda like make metal pills more easier to swallow. It is still not for everbody's taste though.
Fun fact: BABYMETAL song "Catch me if you can" on your previous video is a song talking about hide-and-seek game. So, lyrically it still have the cute aspect to it.
For me, BABYMETAL's music really broaden my taste buds. I've never imagine myself exploring german's party-metal-core band like Electric Callboy, or even Thailand's hip hop artist like F.HERO if not by their collaboration with BABYMETAL.
I hope someday, when you are looking for something "unique", you will find something amongs BABYMETAL tracks menu that will suits you. 🦊

I was worried because in the last Babymetal reaction you didn't seem all that grumpy. LOL
Unfortunately, we fans tend to recommend songs without much regard to the reactor. Still, I would have thought you would have liked this better than you did. But, given your comments on why, I believe I understand better. Regarding other recommendations I am seeing: While Karate and Distortion both have heavier backing than you have heard with either of these last two, they might still have too much of a pop thing in them for you to like. And In The Name Of and Babymetal Death are quite heavy and without pop elements, they are repetitive and meant as hype the crowd openers. As for Headbanger, again too much pop elements. And maybe the same for Megitsune despite a truly heavy (but short) breakdown. Amore is a great song, but it is very much Kawaii Metal even if a bit less pop, but the arrangement suffers from not having the just the right sound mix on most videos.
I'm thinking the song which might work would be Rondo of Nightmare (with Mischiefs of God intro) live Budokan Black Night 2014.
If you are in to Prog-metal then Tales Of the Destinies is definitely worth a shot.
Everything else will have that alchemy of J-pop Idol infused into metal in varying alloys. Because that is what they do.
I appreciate that you appreciate their ability/talent/whatever and are not trashing them even if not liking their music.
If you give them another try, I will definitely give it a view.

Musically I'm not a big fan of RoR either, but BABYMETAL, in my opinion, is mostly a 'musical theatre' show, with more than their fair share of good songs in their own right ... so while personally I too would press skip on RoR on a CD, but if you watch the video and appreciate it for what it is, then it becomes a much better performance ... but even if you did look at it as a whole 'performance' and still didn't like the song, so what? People like what they like, I'm not going to get pissed if someone doesn't like a song. At least you're not the usual BABYMETAL critic, a close-minded self-described 'metal-head' that sees a BABYMETAL thumbnail and just assumes they are a fake and a gimmick, and/or calling their fans 'pedos', etc.

I like this song, but I understand some of your opinions and this is not even one of my top 10 favorites in BABYMETAL's songs.
A person's tastes should be respected completely individually.
At least you had the option of not posting the video, but you honestly edited and posted the video for this song that you aren't so interested in.
Why are there so many dislikes? That's a shame and not fair.
    Anyway,Thank you very much.
YUI (one of the two little dancers) loved this 'Road of Resistance'.
(she sadly away from BABYMETAL because of illness 2018)
According Japanese magazine that I read before, YUI definitely wanted to perform the Road of Resistance in the UK(overseas) for the FIRST TIME in the world. not at Japan.
I don't know how much her wishes influenced the decision, but in fact 'Road of Resistance' was the first public release in the UK November 2014 in the world.
It may have been a special thing because YUI is shy and doesn't actively give her opinion.
I think she was as grateful as or better than Japan to the UK (overseas) fans who warmly accepted them.
In fact, Sonisphere Festival July 2014 at UK has been a huge turning point in BABYMETAL's history and gave them conffidence.
The 'Road of Resistace' you saw is a live performance in Japan about half a year after the first performance at LONDON.
Apart from the evaluation of the music itself, I like this song including these stories .
I like your honest reaction even if I disagree, so I'd be happy if you could pick up BABYMETAL again someday.

My favorite part of watching reactions to this song is always the mosh pit moment and when the crowd starts singing along. Besides that, I'm sorry this didn't strike the right cord with you, but it was neat to hear your analysis anyway! Not everyone likes everything, and I didn't think you were disrespectful in the reasoning you gave or the way you presented your opinions. It's pretty sucky that folks have disliked this so much, but like... a reaction is a person's reaction to a thing, good OR bad. Do I want everyone to enjoy the things I like (this song included)? Yes. Do I expect everyone is going to and get butthurt when they don't? Absolutely not.
You might like the instrumentals more on Karate (one I love to see folks react to also) or Gimme Chocolate, but I think the vocals on those aren't going to be your jam either. I think you'll enjoy Rondo of Nightmare, but you have to listen to the version with the Mischief of Gods intro. Pa Pa Ya brings in another vocalist (F.Hero) and is a little bit of another genre mix you might find interesting also.

I mean the thing with Babymetal is the range. This more power metal/speed metal-side of Babymetal produces a lot of my favorite songs: Akatsuki, Road of Resistance, Ijime Dame Zettai, Amore, etc.
See to me Road of Resistance is much more metal than Catch Me If You Can and CMIYC was never one my favorite songs.
Since I don't exactly know what style of metal you like, I don't know what to suggest, but I'm sure there's something in the Babymetal-catalog for you.
If you're more into Prog Tales of the Destinies is a Dream Theater hommage. If you like djenty riffs Starlight is one of my overall favorite songs. If it's Viking metal they got Oh! MAJINAI and Meta Taro (I don't like Meta Taro). If it's more about heavy groovy riffs maybe Karate or Kagerou.
But hey. Babymetal isn't for everyone. I totally get that.
