Babymetal created kawaii metal (metal + j-pop) and this was still the first era, then they decided that metal sounds good with every music genre ever created, for the next album I expect Su doing the mongolian throat singing or something like that

Most people need a few songs to wrap their minds around Babymetal.
If you like the main singer's voice (Su-Metal), you should maybe check out "Rondo of nightmare"...which is a song she performs on her own.
    Great reaction...
PS: Always go with live performances (except "Karate", the MV has the better sound by far)

Good first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. Don't worry, you had the most natural first reaction of "WTF did I listen to?" but it has interested you enough to think maybe another song ...
The second song you reaction will be "this is still weird, but the music is so good and it somehow seems to work".
Third song will be "It really is weird, but it does work and now I need to listen to everything they've ever done".
Good guesses all round - yes they are Japanese and yes Su-metal the lead singer was 16, Yuimetal and Moametal (the two younger girls) were both 14. Su is incredibly talented and versatile vocalist and front person.
Yui's and Moa's main roles are described as "scream & dance", but what that actually means is backing vocals, harmonies and, most importantly, they are in charge of getting the crowd involved. Their choreo serves two purposes, it helps to interpret the song for those of us who don't speak Japanese and, its main purpose, they lead the crowd - at certain points in a song the crowd will want to jump, pump their fists or whatever - Yui and Moa lead them and let them know yes, jump now, shout now, join in and become part of the whole performance.
Their choreo is not what we're used to with pop music in the west where people mince about aimlessly and for no apparent reason other than to give you something to watch to take your mind off the bland music, it is a Japanese thing they call "ai no te" - I guess leading the call & response would be the closest thing we have.
The musicians supporting BABYMETAL (that being Su, Yui and Moa) are the Kami Band, some of Japan's very best session musicians - they are all world class and can play anything - which is just as well as BABYMETAL have about 50 songs and they are all different - virtually every metal genre but with many other musical styles and genres mixed in with the metal.
The Kami Band has had many members stepping in and rotating depending on availability, but there is a hard core - at this show guitarists were Leda Cygnus and Takayoshi Ohmura, bass was BOH and drums was Hideki Aoyama. Other musicians you will see in other videos include Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and ISAO on guitar,
For the US tour of 2019 and the European tour of 2020 a new Kami Band of the West (American musicians) supported BABYMETAL. They are Chris Kelly, C J Masciantonio and Clint Tustin all from Galactic Empire on guitars and bass respectively and Anthony Barone once of Shadow of Intent on drums.
These were the first major shows (Budokan Red Night and Black Night) where the Kami Band finally became BABYMETAL's full time support and they have been with them for every live performance ever since. The Kami Band first appeared in October 2012 - they played the encores in a few shows and supported BABYMETAL in a couple of festival appearances from then. Before that (and during that transition period) BABYMETAL sang with a fake band dressed in skeleton suits (called Babybones) miming the instruments which were played on a pre-recorded backing track.
There were a couple of reasons for that. BABYMETAL first formed in 2010 as a sub-unit of a Jpop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin. Su was 12, Yui and Moa were 11 and the only shows they played were Sakura Gakuins own shows and Idol festivals and in those all the girls in the various groups would do their song and dance routines to a backing track.
BABYMETAL separated from Sakura Gakuin in 2013 when Su was 15 (the group had a school theme and was for girls aged 10 to 15, so it was time for Su to graduate). As the whole idea for BABYMETAL had been formed and developed around Su and her vocal talents their producer persuaded their agency Amuse that BABYMETAL should continue as an independent band in their own right serving as Su's vehicle.
Amuse were reluctant to put more funding into the project than was necessary early on, so the money was not made available for a live band supporting them on a full time basis until they had established themselves and started to gain an audience of their own.
You spoke about the venue - The Budokan is a martial arts arena built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, which explains the lay out with the audience up on several levels and surrounding the stage in the centre of the arena.
The Budokan is now also a hugely prestigious venue for concerts - you don't just get to book it and play there unless you merit playing there (think the equivalent of somewhere like Carnegie Hall or Madison Square Garden - they're the US ones I can think of).
These shows in 2014 coincided with the release of their first album and BABYMETAL became the youngest average age female band ever to headline - and they sold it out two nights running.
They have gone on to be recognised as one of the very best live bands on the planet (not just my opinion, they have many international awards that say so among the nearly 30 they have won). They were the first Japanese band to headline Wembley Arena and broke all the merch records, they sold out the Tokyo Dome (55,000 people) two nights running. They are the highest ever charting Japanese act on the Billboard charts and the first Asian act to have an album at number 1 in the Hard Rock charts. They have played at nearly all the big metal festivals in the US and Europe, supported bands like Metallica, Korn, Guns & Roses, Judas Priest and others either as a one off opening act or on tours and late last year celebrated their 10th anniversary.
Sadly Yui left the band in October 2018 for undisclosed health reasons - she last appeared in October 2017 and they held her place for her return, but she decided her recovery was taking too long and chose to go her own way. Since 2019 Su and Moa have been supported by any one of three girls (Kano, Riho and Momoko) dancing - but not singing - in the third spot.
Personally I think 'Headbanger' is a great song to introduce people to BABYMETAL with, but as I said before they have about 50 great songs and every one of them is different. You could try one of Su-metal's solo songs next (so no Yui or Moa with their backing vocals you were struggling with) to get more used to the idea - I see 'Rondo of Nightmare' and 'Akatsuki' from the same show as this have been suggested already.
After one of them try 'Megitsune' (official video or live at the Red Fox Festival - you will find that one on the Babymetal Reactor Resource channel)- or 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' live at Sonisphere 2014 in the UK. We can take it on from there with some of their more recent songs - but as you were struggling with Yui's and Moa's vocals please DO NOT try 'Gimme Chocolate' yet (even if someone begs you to do it) - leave that until you are more used to them, it has a much bigger WTF factor than 'Headbanger' or most of their other songs.
Apologies for the wall of text, but BABYMETAL is a unique band - they fused Jpop with metal and invented their own new genre and they now blend in so many other styles with the metal. They are so worth exploring further - you may not like all their songs, that is fine, they do so many different things, but there are just as likely to be songs that you will have playing on repeat.

  • @somefox2928
    @somefox2928 3 года назад +66

The arena that you liked is named Budokan, it is one of the most important arena shows in Japan, and even outside it, many international huge artists performed there, it looks like an octagon becasue it was built to be a martial arts ginasium.
And you are not wrong about their ages, this was back in 2014, Su-metal (the singer) was only 16, and Yuimetal and Moametal (the backing vocals) were only 14, i think BABYMTAL still holds the record of youngest female act to perform in the Budokan.
Su's function in the band is called vocal&dance, as she is the main vocals, Yui and Moa function is called scream&dance, as they are the backing vocals and the ones that sing the lines that the crowd sing along, or "scream" with them. In Japan it is very common for the crowd not sing along, unless the artists call for that, they think that singing along is disrespectful, so BABYMETAL has Yui and Moa not only dancing but also bringing the crowd in to the performance. And yes, that break with them interacting with the crowd is long because it is a live performance, they were hyping the crowd even more. And they are theatrical, they have a specific choreography for each of their songs, it is part of the genre they created, called kawaii(cute) metal.
Each of their songs is different from the other, with them performing many metal genres, and mixing it with other music genres. So, some songs will be heavier, others will be lighter, other funnier...
The band started in 2010, when the girls were only 12 and 11 years old. Now they are 23 and 21, received many international metal awards, opened concerts for bands like Metallica, Guns N'Roses and Judas Priest, even performing with Rob Halford and many other big artists. They have three albums released, with their third album, released in 2019, topping the rock US billboard charts.
As for next songs to react, you mentioned the band that plays for them, the name of the band is Kami-band, they have solos before some songs, perhaps you would like to check Rondo of the Nightmare with the Mischief of the Gods intro, from the same concert, it also focus more on Su-metal's voice: ruclips.net/video/8WBDiLMNZcE/видео.html
From the same concert there is also Akatsuki, another one that focus on her voice, this one doesnt have the intrumental "intro" but it does have a nice "guitar duel" with the guys in the front:ruclips.net/video/g2372C5PJLM/видео.html
And as for "live or studio" , live is the option, they are good on studio and MVs, but their live performances are even better. Unless you want a "shock", and react to their first MV, Doki Doki Morning, with them even younger.

Welcome to BabyMetal. Anticipating the arrival of The One.
The backing band are some of the best session musicians in Japan. They’re called the Kami Band. Trust me, the Kami Band is equally revered as BabyMetal among the fans. These days, Kami Band also have American musicians who tour with BabyMetal outside Japan. They are members of the Galactic Empire band (if wrong someone correct me) & the drummer is Anthony Barone.
As for BabyMetal themselves, there are no two songs that are the same. They aren’t afraid to fuse other genres with their core Jpop/Metal origins. Metal legends like Metallica, Korn, Slipknot, etc have said they are fans of BabyMetal. Rob Halford has performed with them. They’ve toured with Guns N Roses, RHCP, etc. Opened for Metallica in Korea.

Great ! & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。Confusion is always the first step towards the foxhole. BABYMETAL's activities have been worldwide since 2014, the year this video was filmed. In the latest world tours from June 2019 through March 2020 (prior to the pandemic), they performed live 20 times in USA, 19 in EU/UK/Russia and 1 in Taiwan in addition to 15 in Japan. This year, they carefully restarted their concerts and completed 10 serial shows here in Tokyo taking very strict countermeasures against infection. I witnessed them at the venue.
Next song? How about "BABYMETAL-KARATE (live UK Download 2016)"? You will find how the girls are loved by and interact with the fans in the foreign country.

  • @ForAnAngel
    @ForAnAngel 3 года назад +22

Amazing reaction! For someone who went into this video completely blind you were right on with a lot of things you said. Babymetal is a Japanese J-pop/Heavy Metal band formed in 2010. They blend J-Pop vocals with heavy metal instrumentation and call their music "Kawaii metal" or "Cute metal". The lead singer is called Su-metal and the other two girls are Yui-metal and Moa-metal. Su-metal was 16 in this performance and the other 2 were both 14. As you pretty much figured out, Yui and Moa's job is to get the crowd hyped up while focusing on the choreography and providing backup vocals to Su-metal who mostly just focuses on vocals.
Being completely confused and not knowing what to think about them is a 100% appropriate reaction to seeing Babymetal for the first time. Every single one of Babymetal's fans remembers feeling exactly the same way the first time we saw them and is why we love watching other people's first time reactions. I guarantee you, Babymetal will grow on you the more you watch them. You'll even eventually get used to their high voices! If you want to ease yourself into them though you could try watching something more recent of theirs, they are still around and now in their 20's so they don't sound like little girls anymore and are even more awesome.

    • @Ssserrrge
      @Ssserrrge 3 года назад

They are not awesome anymore. A mix of specifically kids voices and heavy music was what was making them completely unique. I sure hope you'll do more Babymetal at some point, because you really haven't seen anything yet. The girls were between 14 and 16 here, and have been performing as Babymetal since they were 10-12 years old. They've just recently celebrated their 10 year anniversary, and have toured the world many, many times, in addition to playing at every major metal festival on the planet. There is no other band out there like them, and they invented this genre of music, referred to as Kawaii (cute) metal. No two songs of theirs are the same, and they explore pretty much every genre of metal, and mix metal with other genres as well.
It usually takes a few songs before people's brains can adjust and you really get what they're about, but once you do it will all make sense. The live band they tour with (the Kami Band) are literally some of the best musicians you'll ever hear. For a demonstration of that, I'd recommend Rondo of Nightmare (with the Mischiefs of God intro). It's a song performed only with the lead singer and includes an instrumental intro that will give you a good idea of the musicians capabilities.

Highly recommend Rondo of Nightmare with the mischiefs of god intro. They gave the band like a 3-4 minute instrumental intro which is mind blowing, and the song itself is a solo by the older girl (Su-metal) so there's none of the backing vocals (I'm with you on that, they can be a little grating - still love this band though!)

Metal Hammer called Babymetal the biggest thing in metal in the past 10 years. They are really challenging the perception of what is metal. They are all about dichotomies, heavy, brutal, innocent and poppy. The band was assembled as a vehicle for the lead singers voice, and you may like their later stuff. They are in their twenties now and their voices have all matured.
Like them or not, they are a much needed shake up to the status quo in metal.
The Budokan is where the martial arts championships are held, and like MA arenas in that part of the world, is an octogan.

Having seen quite a lot of Babymetal reaction videos, I can say that you are certainly not alone in experiencing cognitive dissonance when trying to reconcile the light and cheerful vocals with they heavy music. And from your initial reaction, I can also tell you that Babymetal is almost certainly about to become your new favorite band. I know that you think I'm exaggerating, but I really don't think I am. You fall into a very recognisable category, and people in that category tend to follow a very predictable trajectory. If we can just get you to listen to 2 or maybe 3 more songs, then there will be no turning back for you!
You will soon notice that Babymetal is an insanely diverse band. Their music cover every subgenre of metal, and creates a few new ones while they are at it. Some songs are much heavier than what you just heard, while some are more playful and poppy. Never make the mistake of thinking that you know what to expect. Because you never do.
But for your next song, I think we should highlight the band, and hold back on the cheerful vocals of Moa and Yui. Which makes "Rondo of Nightmare" the obvious recommendation. Make sure to pick the version with the "Mischief of the Metal Gods" intro, or you will make all the fans very upset :-)
I won't subscribe quite yet, but I will keep an eye out for your next Babymetal reaction. Keep it up, and I'll see you on the other side, dude!

I really enjoyed how descriptive you were of your feelings. It makes for a great reaction.
I think most Babymetal fans' first reaction was confusion as well, and mine in particular was identical to yours. I wasn't big on the cutesy vocals, but they grew on me pretty quickly. I felt their songs were too great to let those vocals hold me back in enjoying their music. Hopefully you'll check them out again before reaching letter Z. I'm not gonna go the route of recommending stuff completely avoiding Yui and Moa (the backup vocalists), but rather listening to something where you're likely gonna enjoy their vocals. That's why I'll recommend 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' Live at Sonisphere 2014 by them. It's very different from this one but I bet you'll enjoy it more.

Don't worry, initial bewilderment is quite common in BABYMETAL first-timers! lol
You need to react to BABYMETAL's amazing arena anthem "Road of Resistance Live in Japan"
ruclips.net/video/zTEYUFgLveY/видео.html Massive 20K crowd, LESS "anime" vocals, MORE focus on the backing musicians: and even MORE audience participation! You WILL be impressed! :)
(The song is co-written with the guitarists from Dragonforce, who are big BABYMETAL supporters)

It's ok, you'll figure them out after 2 or 3 more songs. 🙂
I see people are trying to steer you away from Yui and Moa but since they are intregal to Babymetal I don't think that's a good idea. You will understand what they bring to the group if you read the comments and watch a couple more videos. Road of Resistance would be a good choice for the next song. Karate or Megitsune would also be good.
To be clear, Akatsuki and Rondo of Nightmare are really really good songs. Eventually though, if you wanted to keep watching, you'll have to get used to the other two girls.

Yes live is their Best ! Road Of Resistance official live , Karate live at Download festival . Hahaha , good honest review. They are their genre own Kawaii Metal which is Cute Metal in english . They have won Best International Touring Act from metal Hammer magazine 2years running.. Toured OS with Guns n Roses, Chilli Peppers Kiss, Lady Gaga, and played many Metal Fests OS , also sold out Wembley Area (out-merching The Beatles record). Adored globally as well as by many major metal and rock acts. I undrstand your confusion but once you get into their live catalogue of work you will realse the genius of this mashup.

if you want to maybe see more of the Kami band in the shows then I highly recommend that you check out these songs:
    - Rondo of Nightmare with the Mischiefs of the Metal Gods Intro
    - Yava with the Kami Band Intro
    - Catch me if you can (I think there's some pro-shot compilation videos that gives you a good look)
Other BabyMetal songs I'd recommend highly as well are:
    - Pa Pa Ya ft. F Hero
    - Megitsune
    - Kingslayer ft Babymetal (Their collab with Bring Me The Horizon)
    - Road of Resistance
    - Gimme Chocolate
    - Their Legend of 1997 concert is def worth watching
    - Just basically all of their live stages & MVs
Also someone else in the comments can probably describe them better but Yui-metal and Moa-metal were around 14/15 at this concert and Su metal the main vocal was around 16 or 17.
I believe they started out as a normal pop idol group but I don't know much about Sakura Gakuin tbh.
The band went through a lot of changes since what I believe was their western debut in France and Germany & then subsequently they played at the UKs Sonisphere in 2014. (someone pls correct me)
Yui-metal left the group in 2018 for health reasons & her spot in more recent concerts is filled by an avenger member of which there are 3 girls.
They also lost one of their guitarists in the Kami band, Mikio Fujioka, in 2018 in an accident.
On bass you have Boh - you'll get a better look of him and some of the other members and their talent in the Mischiefs of the Metal Gods intro. Takayoshi Ohmura, Leda Cygnus and Isao Fujita are also on guitar - but not always at the same show etc. Hideki Aoyama is their insane drummer.
The Kami band also has their own 4 avenger members for what I think was some of their American shows but I could be wrong there as well.

Babymetal is best live. You might also like "Road of Resistance - Live in Japan" or "Akatsuki at Budokan"
Babymetal immediately exert their super power over you and a confused smile spreads across your face....WTF, Japanese and the girls are 14ish and the band is heavy and it's in an arena...that's some pretty spot on deduction! For now don't worry about being confused. Don't think, just feel and you will understand all you need at the beginning.
This concert was at Budokan in March 2014 so the lead singer, Su, was 16 and the other girls, Yui and Moa, were almost 15. The song is a bittersweet coming of age story about a 15 year old school girl going to a concert and braving the mosh pit, while knowing the freedom of the moment won't last long. It's used to celebrate BM birthdays and both Yui and Moa have taken the lead in it for their birthdays. The song probably resonated with Su because the year before she had graduated from middle school and the idol group "Sakura Gakuin", Yui and Moa were both still members, and started working full time with Babymetal.
The combination of youth and cuteness with the confidence and ability to control a stadium crowd is what initially gets people interested, but then they realize there's some real talent as well and they are great entertainers. All the girls have been performing for many years and the lead singer has done some musical theater which I think helps in her metal performances. Their big concerts are full on theatrical productions with Yui and Moa conducting the crowd interactions, Su being imperious and the Kami Band ripping it up. The Kami Band are dressed in death robes and have painted faces as the are supposed to be Shinto spirits.

Definitely worth the dive. Road of Resistance live in Japan is what got me hooked to this band. None of their songs sound the same so you get a different experience each time. Live performances are the most recommended to react to because that is where this band shines. Megitsune and Karate do have solid music videos worth watching though. Confusion is absolutely the most common first reaction though. Go with Su's recommendation when listening to them: "Dont think. Feel." Looking forward to the next Babymetal reaction! Kitsunes Up! 🦊🤘

You definitely need to do more Babymetal reactions, and from what you said, I would recommend these songs: Road of resistance (Very heavy and fast), Rondo of nightmare (from budokan black night, the Intro by the band is exactly what you will love) or Akatsuki (also a Su Solo, just like Rondo of nightmare)

Sorry for the double posts, but I want to make a separate point here, and I'm always gets a bit excited when there's new people discovering Babymetal :D Anyway, let me tell you, your first reaction to them are much better than mine when I first listened to them, as a long time metal listener, I cringed hard at their voices and can't even bring myself to continue the song, but karma took me by storm last year when I finally able to wrap my heads around it, and now I'm a diehard fans of them, take it slowly buddy, keep it open mind, and if you choose to continuing this journey, you'll be in for hell of ride :).
Try 'Megitsune', 'Syncopation', 'Starlight', and 'Karate'. There are still those "cute anime" voices in some of them, so you can still familiarize yourself with their style a bit more.

Short probably over succinct version: they were part of a jpop ensemble in middle school (this sort of jpop group are the ones that do those anime songs typically). Their producer was a metal head and said “you know, I think i could put you in metal and fuse these deals.” And they were basically “… what’s metal?” But obviously it worked out. Jpop tends towards audience participation (with fans getting a near cult like form of devotion) and flashy live performance, so they basically were training to put on a hell of a live show (they work on their own choreography) since when they figured this career was taking them to sing an anime intro. Turns out it translates surprisingly well, even if the costumes have a lot less colors.

Under the (1) I would recommend Doki Doki Morning, Catch Me If You Can
    (2) Road of Resistance, Syncopation, Starlight, Rondo of Nightmare
    (3) Headbanger, Karate, Megitsune, Death, BxMxC, Shanti Shanti.
Good call to rate it "to be determined", as every Babymetal songs sound different. Babymetal is one of those bands who sound so good (even better) live, and since theatrics and the crowd are big part of their show, always good to react to their live performances.

I guess I will be the one this time who pops in the praise from Rob Zombie about these wonderful girls. Haha, your confusion was quite entertaining. :-D I have a feeling that after two more BABYMETAL songs that wall in your head will lay in ruins. I'm not entirely convinced that your "eh" verdict is what you really feel. Could it be that you want to like it, but there's a tiny voice in your head saying that you must not? That wouldn't be unusual for metalheads when they see them for the first time. But as I said, two more songs, and you might start wondering why other Metal bands don't have choreographed dancing and frilly skirts.
I have discovered this band 4 years ago, and I still can't comprehend how much they have taken me under their spell. I'd spend my whole day watching them, if I could. I have never come across a more complete package of entertainment. Of course there are people that will never appreciate a crazy mixture like this, but you don't seem like one of those.

We all gone through the confused stage befote getting to babymetal. It's the very essence of their genre. They are a kawaii (Japanese for cute) metal. A genre that mixes J-Pop vocals and metal instrumentals.
If you want to hear another song that features their kawaii metal side, I recommend you Ijime, Dame, Zettai Live at Sonisphere 2014. Or if you want a full throttle power metal, I recommend you Road of Resistance Live in Japan. If you want to hear each of the band members having their instrumental solos, I recommend you Rondo of Nightmare with Mischief of Gods Intro Live at Budokan Black Night. If you want a whole instrumental song with less vocals and insane theatrics, I recommend you Babymetal Death Legend 1997.

    Hedoban, Hedoban.
The little kid voices, well the 2 younger girls were only 14 at the time. Su, the lead singer was 16.
If you like the music and the theatrics you should try BABYMETAL Death from the Legend of 1997 concert. The 1997 in the title refers to the lead singers birth year and was recorded the day after her 16th birthday in 2013. There are some great performances from that show, Death is the show closer with very few lyrics so maybe a little less confusing.

If that's the ONLY thing you didn't like about the performance, you are in total denial. Cause overall, they are really fun to watch, high energy and when you watch their faces, they are having a ball performing in front of a live audience. That is worth the price of admission. Hedobang Hedobang…
    [English:]
With the legendary black long hair
    disordered around and gorgeously
    blooming crazy, this flower
    will soon disappear fruitlessly
    Headbang, headbang!
    Headbang, headbang!
    Headbang, headbang!
    Kon kon kon kon!
    Now the time has come
    I no longer hesitate
    I hold tightly
    the discount railway tickets
To the east, to the west
to the south, to the north
today too I rush to the very front of the stage center
On the left side, (Come on!)
on the right side, (Come on!)
    standing up still, leaning back,
jumping toward the stage, (And then!)
leaning over the fence, (And then!)
rolling over the mob, (And then!)
    and then all deeply headbanging.
This special night of my fifteen,
    I’ll never forget.
    All the crybabies,
    get out of here!
With the legendary black long hair
    disordered around and gorgeously,
    blooming crazy, this flower
    will soon disappear fruitlessly.
    It’ll never come back again
    and it’s so short period.
    I etch in my heart
this special night of my fifteen.
I jump lightly and dance in the air.
    Headbanger!
    Headbang, headbang…
This special night of my fifteen,
    I’ll never forget.
    All the crybabies,
    from here, dis-ap-pear!
This special night of my fifteen,
    I’ll never forget.
    All that disturb us,
right now get out of here!
With the legendary black long hair
    disordered around and gorgeously,
    blooming crazy, this flower
    will soon disappear fruitlessly.
    It’ll never come back again
    and it’s so short period.
    I etch in my heart
this special night of my fifteen.
With the legendary black long hair
    disordered around and gorgeously,
    blooming crazy, this flower
    will soon disappear fruitlessly.
I can never come back again to it
    and it’s so short period.
    I etch in my memory
this special night of my fifteen.
I jump lightly and dance in the air.
    Headbang, headbang!
    Headbang, headbang!
    Headbang, headbang!
    Kon kon ko kon!
    Headbanger!
    Headbang, headbang…
