    I used to tell people the corridor between Getty and Henry is where the bad neighborhoods were, but even those parts of town aren't so rough anymore until you get near the Heights.
    Which is ALSO starting to turn around.
    I'm glad to see it, but I don't REALLY want a lot of outsiders flocking here. Two of the best things about Muskegon are it's not too crowded and it's not too expensive.

There two really good weeks of the year - last week of July and 1st week of August. I helped my parents dig our way out of the house in the 1978 blizzard and get food via snowmobile.

      @@unique_monique Yep, it's a surprisingly nice lake shore . Lots of nice neighborhoods near the lake, n muskegon etc. the southern suburbs are pretty nice , You've got Grand Haven, Holland touristy not far away if you want that. There's decent big box shopping scattered across different commercial districts nearby. A new Trinity hospital, an underutilized airport that is really one of the nicest small airports in the state and very pretty to fly in and out of right over the lake . Muskegon puts you on the lake shore but close to GR if you really need a bigger city get away, with functioning malls... You're about 2 hours from traverse city for a "up north" sort of get a way., with lots of small lake towns like Ludington, Manistee ,M22 to Frankfort and beyond. It's nice that the downtown is getting some investment. That town and area is worth looking at and you'll never be told you can't water your lawn.

    Back in 60s and 50s the town boomed industrially, union Jobs galore. What changed is it became a tourist town, all the jobs went away, wages went down and thats why you have the poverty rate so high here. Don't forget the 1% city tax and if you want to enjoy the beach there is a parking fee, that use to be free. Lived here most of my life, always had to look for job in other cities.

      Over the years, my town has seen some big changes. Back in the 50s and 60s, it was all about industry and union jobs. But now, it's become more of a tourist spot, and those jobs have disappeared. Wages have taken a hit, and the poverty rate has shot up as a result. Plus, with the new city tax and parking fees at the beach, it feels like we're getting nickel-and-dimed for everything. I've spent most of my life here, but I've always had to look elsewhere for work.

    So well researched! Thank you for this wonderful information. I would like to counter your "con" of not having national concerts with the "pro" of our absolutely thriving cultural scene. We have 13 museums (including a nationally renowned art museum and 3 maritime museums), the states largest amusement park, historic homes, three lighthouses (two you can tour) festivals galore (including the states largest Irish music and Christian music festivals and a beer festival on the shores of Lake Michigan), an amazing symphony, fantastic theatre groups, Frauenthal Center that brings in national shows (dance, music, comedy, theatre) and while they may not be on the scale of Van Andel concerts, the amount of live (and FREE live) music is astounding. You mentioned the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park - this past year they have added a dual zipline and outdoor rock climbing wall. There is literally TOO much to do here. Again, thanks for this great video.

    I grew up in Muskegon in the 60's and 70's, as the industrial boom was winding down. There were still lots of good paying factory jobs, it was a vibrant city then. As the factory jobs left for cheaper labor overseas (and down south), the average pay rate went down quite a bit. That hit the local economy hard. The big plus that Muskegon has is the "Big Lake." Without a doubt that is a big draw, and defines the place. In fact, it used to bill itself as "The Port City" during the 50's thru the 70's, with large amounts of both domestic and international shipping moving through the harbor. Muskegon has tried to reinvent itself as a tourist destination, and cultural center, which is promising. I live in another state in the midwest, and really miss the Lake life.

    • @livegreatgr
      @livegreatgr  4 месяца назад

      It sounds like you witnessed quite the transformation in Muskegon over the years. The decline of the industrial boom definitely had a significant impact on the local economy, but it's inspiring to hear about the city's efforts to adapt and reinvent itself.
