not underrated at all. Hes just not marketable to the mainstream music industry which is not the same thing as The Art Industry. Art is not marketable. Real Music is not marketable anymore. In fact Mainstream Music has never been as bad as it currently is right now and it will continue to get worse.
So many incredible artists in this video. Aaron Maine of Porches, Julian Casablancas of the Strokes and the Voidz, and, obviously, Dev. Cool to know your favorite music is beloved by your favorite music makers.
i can literally feel my soul dancing inside of me when i listen to his songs. its like my soul wants to leave my body and just express it all. i love his music so much
I was going to write a comment but I felt like i would’ve got sued for copyright. This is exactly how I feel, I haven’t stopped listening to this song all day & yeah there might of been a few breaks at work but every chance I got this was the song that was playing in my ears. This is my souls favourite song at the moment ❤️
@@caleb8414 thank you for sharing. haven’t listened to this song in a while. Coming back to this comment made me realize how much I missed feeling like this.
In this video (I'm writing a school essay about his album), I've found that Dev has many small hidden things throughout the film. Such as, the hat he is wearing has the flag of Guyana (the country his mother is from), he is standing in front of the three colors of green, white and blue (Sierra Leone's flag where Dev's father is from). He also is eating inside of a Guyana style restaurant while wearing a shirt that has the royal arms of England (where Dev was raised). In the beginning it shows book/magazines that include "Saint Augustine of Hippo", a TIME magazine cover of "After Trayvon", and a "Black Queer Studies" book. One of the dancers is wearing a "Peace Corps" shirt which is a volunteer program that helps people who are not from America, learn about American culture as well as help Americans learn about other countries cultures. I'm still trying to figure out a few things, such as what the handshake means (if it means anything) that Dev did with the restaurant owner, as well as twice throughout the film (4:14 and 4:39) there is a flash and if paused at the right moment, there is a white background with a black hole. I'm sure he has a few more hidden features that I didn't catch, so if you find anything please share!
The white background with the black hole it's quite interesting. At first I thought it was a normal burn film effect but when paused I realized it was this poorly cut hole through this kind of plastic pvc white texture, and if you look closely you'll notice white dust scattered through the surface. Have you manage to identify what it was?
This has been one of my biggest repeat listens ever since it dropped, and still to this day, every single listen still feels like a fresh glass of water at 3 a.m.
Devonte has a lot of passion and his singing really reminds us to remember with everything going on in the world right now at least we have memories no one can take from us and our history to teach to heal and the love and connection to faith. His voice has so much soul and is so beautiful and has such a range. ❤
My father was a young man My mother off the boat My eyes were fresh at twenty-one Bruised but still afloat Our heads have hit the pavement Many times before You stroke his face to soothe him While knowing that there’s more Saint Augustine Late have I loved and chose to see Skin on his skin A warmth that I can feel with him And no one even told me The way that you should feel Tell me did you lose your son? Tell me did you lose your love? Cry and burst my deafness, while Trayvon falls asleep The things that I would do to you The things that I could do to you Saint Augustine Late have I loved and chose to see (what I chose to see, what I chose to see) Skin on his skin A warmth that I can feel with him Nontetha (nontetha) We heard it all from you (we heard it all from you) Nontetha We waited here for you (waited here for you) Nontetha (nontetha) We heard it all from you (we heard it all from you) Nontetha We waited here for you (waited here for you) Nontetha We heard it all from you Nontetha We waited here for you Nontetha Kushé-o aw di bodi Nontetha
Nontetha Nkwenkwe was an early 20th century Xhosa spiritual leader. "Kushé-o aw di bodi" is a phrase spoken in Krio, an English-based creole language spoken throughout Sierra Leone. I believe it translates to "Lay your body down", tho I am not certain & hope that I am not misunderstanding the lyric.
Just discovered Blood Orange in a dimly lit Chinese restaurant in West Seattle last year. Finding out all of this amazing music is a decade or such old blew my mind. Where have I been? Finding out he’s a black solo artist was a mindtrip as well, I thought it was a white GROUP.
This guy just makes people perspective of genders more different like how you can have a very feminime voice inside a masculine body, you can do ballet even if your male and I respect that cause I, myself have a very feminime voice even if I'm male, his personality is really independent and not strict and I like that
That was a beautiful piece, I've been a fan of Dev for a long time and the message and attributes like Aaron and Julian where awesome in the vid. Hope hear this live soon!
I’m from SL and I had been listening to charcoal baby and really enjoyed it so looked at your other songs and the moment I saw the SL flag I was so happy
This song inspired me to write an essay for my Roman literature class about how Saint Augustine was gay, using his prominent work "Confessions".
a fellow humanities student here, music is always my main inspiration for my essays. so I love this comment🪻

Fcuking *underrated* syndrome.

That handshake (in restaurant) is a Rastafarian brethren greeting! Many live in Guayana being Carribbeans!
May I read the essay? Just listened to Freetown sound, still feel like I missed out on Alot :)

Hopefully this is high school lmfao
He's actually in a Jamaican restaurant. (I'm Guyanese)
Jules was a pleasant surprise, but this song is a gem of its own. ❤️
but also can I get a collab pls

This is art.
Art is subjective to the beholder, my friend, but this certainly a strong statement for a definition.
One of the most underrated artist I know. I can't stop listening is first album. It's a kind of Prince.

Blood orange isn't a group . It's a single act - Devonte Hynes .
@@thetheoristtranscriptions Noted. Thanks have a fantastic day.
This is one of my hidden gems 💎 songs. Every time i get the aux i play it and people end up loving it
I once went to a Gucci store in NYC and this song was playing. 10/10 Gucci experience.
They used one of his songs in ad once too! I think the people at Gucci think Blood Orange matches their brand well
Ironic
it was a hard rock cafe for me
So far this is my best comment.. Much love @JessicaAmado

This is such a great video, also how Julian Casablancas just pops up like that!

I even lost the count how many times I'm listening to this masterpiece. God what a gem.
I would die for a Blood Orange/FKA Twigs collaboration.

Me now
It will I promise!!!
This dude's the 🐏 for real. So many people sleep on his music.
this is such a beautiful video I am so glad this exists honestly
I loved the 80's vibe ✌
The refrain "Saint Augustine. .." sounds inspired by "sea sex and sun" (Serge Gainsbourg 1978)
Just saw him live in Portland the show was out of this world 🔥🔥🔥the crowd also went crazy
My father was a young man
My mother off the boat
My eyes were fresh at twenty-one
Bruised but still afloat
Our heads have hit the pavement

A warmth that I can feel with him

What does the last part mean?
The last two lines.
@@jemimahnyarkoa8921 the first part of the last two means hello, how are you and idk about that last line
