@Marc Dunn grammys are and have been a joke for years now. It's a popularity contest, nothing more. Sad but true. Just look at the best album nominations for the past few years... Does anybody know an actual respected award given to musicians? Please let me know if you do.
Trust me the Grammys is run by two old white men who aren't in touch with the music of today, or even good music. Shit they even have J Lopez singing a tribute to MoTown music. There are many artists who are slept on who will never be given a Grammy. That's just how music is. Like someone said it's a popularity contest, not even a matter of the quality of music of course there have been many artists who deserved the grammys they received.
SkraitUo The grammys is pretty rigid, what gets considered for it are textbook materials but it especially depends on the social status and age of the artist. I don’t expect artists like Devonte Hynes, Mac Demarco, King Krule, Yellow Days, Jakob Ogawa and many more to be popping up there anytime soon, awards are just based on what an artist has achieved so far and/or the popularity they have garnered, that’s how you get pure stinkers like Drake and Cardi B up there while artists like Joey Bada$$ and Noname are not even mentioned. The criteria for being considered for it are fucking dog shit and out of touch, it works especially hard against younger and more unorthodox artists. It doesn’t judge based on talent at all but purely on status, status and actual talent barely measures to the same amount, artists like Frank Ocean, Aretha Franklin deserves it 100% but there are so many under the radar artists who are left in the basement either because the ‘mainstream’ just doesn’t have the ears to appreciate sounds that are on the opposite end of their pallets or the criteria used for these awards are just flawed.
Jewelry is one of my favorite songs ever. And I’ve heard it live in concert and hearing it in this format... there’s something just so intimate about it. It hits different semi stripped down like this!
the line "Then my teacher told me that this, made her sad Had to act just like the others to get around" always breaks my heart. Imagine having someone who likes you just as you are and having to hide that just for your own safety. Such a beautiful/ melancholy song. It makes me nostalgic at the same time.
The gorgeous chord progression from the opening song is lifted from Charles Mingus "myself when I am real". Dev gave the credit in an interview. Beautiful interpretation of it and made it his own. He's a true artist.
Loved the performance for the most part, took Ian a sec to get warmed up (or fighting a sore throat, I saw the tea). But this is might be the best Dev's singing has been live and I wanted him to take the lead a bit more. I know he's kinda becoming more of a producer/composer with bringing in guest vocals and such, but I would have loved for him too show out a bit. He's almost too humble haha
Wasn’t expecting Blood Orange 😳. Also, S/O to Ashlee Haze! I saw her in person 3 years ago, and she helped me with resources to start performing spoken word in SEATTLE!
As a big gal, I felt those words through and through. Thank you for representing all of us.. even those of us not looked at like human beings because we like to eat out of enjoyment and not only nourishment. Finding self love is hard for us, but with outstanding representation like this, how could we not think it might be okay to be me. Blood orange is now on the list of my music. OUTSTANDING MUSICIANS!
My heart chakra is wide open!! 💜 Thank youuu this touches my heart and soul. I vibed our for half a day with this on repeat and cried. I have made this part of my morning ritual. 🙏🏻
I think a lot about how Dev was bullied badly as a kid and has gone on to with practically every major pop and r&b artist . Nontoxic, proudly black masculinity for the win.
wonderful. Ian and Eva are perfect. I had been hoping for this, "Negro Swan" was my favorite album of 2018, and honestly I think it was the best album Dev has ever made.
Dev is more than music Idk if it’s his art themes that make him timeless but I fell in love with his lyrics, then the sound, then him and his look. If that’s not true love idek.
I like how he doesn't introduce himself or the band name when introducing the others. He seems very humble and lets the music speak for itself. They all "killed it!" :D
Ummm who are the 6 heathens who disliked this.... can we speak please because I think you were listening to something I wasn’t because this was beautiful
the chills this whole tiny desk gives me. makes me cry and everything. my favorite of all time. much love to everyone involved. much love and appreciation to everyone involved. thank you, dev. thank you, thank you !!!!!!!!
Nah man Dev is totally in a league of his own. He's harnessing some true power these days. Growing stronger with every album. Soon our ears will not be able to fathom his gorgeous melodies. A true force of nature.
Epic! Whatever that clarinet / saxophone looking thing is, it sounds smooth as double cream brie. Edit : just read the description. Bass clarinet is now my new fave woodwind
This is prolly a generational artist who tbh unfortunately might forever be slept on but wow man
niina rosa def slept on. The average music listener isnt gonna know blood orange lol
I’m out here doing the lord’s work and it’s hard.
One of the greats
He is a great producer too, not only what we listen

I'm still mad at the Granmys that he wasn't nominated for anything, I mean not even one nom. Dev gave us so much w/ that album.
@Marc Dunn grammys are and have been a joke for years now. It's a popularity contest, nothing more. Sad but true. Just look at the best album nominations for the past few years... Does anybody know an actual respected award given to musicians? Please let me know if you do.
Award shows are a fucking meme. They can barely judge mainstream artists musical talents let alone pick up on amazing street level artists like Dev.

@@seal6565 Agreed! I feel like many people don't expect much from the Grammys anyways with how it's being ran these last couple of years.
Devonte Hynes is one of the most underrated musicians today

Jewelry is such an amazing song when that guitar starts weeping during the second half of the song you just go numb and your brain dissolves so good
You know the music is powerful when they don't even need drums.
omg i literally didn't even notice there was no drums until i read this comment
I can't believe it, it's not butter
I didn't notice the the lack of drums either-kinda liberating!!
