Just found your video. There's a tip for using bobbins for top threads: I always put them into a cup and let the thread running along the threading path for all machines I am using, i.e. serger, coverstitch, and regular (household) sewing machines. For bobbins as top thread I never use the spooling pin, since I realized the thread doesn't unroll evenly as the bobbins sometimes sticks to the spool pin. If I put the bobbin into a cup or glass, the bobbin moves freely and the thread comes of evenly and so are the stitches.
Great video! While I've been sewing for years and knew about this, I love how easy you made it for others. The slow-motion on the detail of the needle working, etc. was terrific. You were made to teach! God bless.
Wow I’ve been sewing for 1/2 a century I didn’t realize the twin needle works for knit hem finishing. I thought it was only for top stitching. I will be using that on my next t-shirt make over. A tip to keep the threads from tangling is to thread the second thread on the right of the tension disk divider.
You can also get bobbin washers for the bottom of the bobbin you’re using for your second top thread if adjusting the upper tension still isn’t working to reduce tension properly. Both my Brother machines and my Singer came with them. It’s like a flat white Teflon/slick plastic washer, less than 1/16” thick, that helps the bobbin or spool spin more smoothly on the pin. Some machines have them to put in the bottom of the lower bobbin case as well-same function.
I have sewed for over 50 years and have never used a twin needle. I am working with a knit and thought it's time. I was not sure what to do with that R needle. NOW I know. My project tomorrow Thanks you
The twin needle is great for knits. I have a knit blouse that I made that still needs to be hemmed. However on this one I’m going to give the wide twin needle ago. The first time I used the twin needle I stared at the shirt for a week and was in awe at how great it made the hems look. Great tutorial!
Wow, you are amazing. I can officially confirm that this is possible on the baby lock joy genuine collection machine. I used a plastic bobbin instead of the plastic thing because my machine did not come with that accessory. It works great, I just have to buy a wider twin needle. Also, I had to increase my length and tension. Yay!
A twin needle can also be used to create pintucks. Increase the tension slightly so the two rows pull together. A pintuck presser foot helps too but it will work with a regular foot.
Thank you, you're a genius. I think I've watched 10 tutorials to try find which stitch setting to use for a twin needle, and you're also the first person to say check the plate😅👏👏
What a wonderful woman you are. I have been sewing for a lifetime and didn’t know about twin needles. Mind you I haven’t tried it yet😂 But I will this weekend. It’s freezing here in the UK so I’ve got plenty of time to try it out. 😊
Thanks for the tutorial on sewing with a twin needle. With your help, I, too, can now sew using the twin needle method. Bunches and bunches of thank you!!!
So glad (sorry) you had those problems! I was about to give up trying to make a twin needle hem. Good to know I’m not the only one with issues! Finding the perfect tension for projects can be so time consuming.
I have had a lot of issues with twin needles. My sewing machine can have twin needle but for some reason there is no introduction about them in the manual. Using twin needle has been very stressful but maybe now I could try again with these tips. I really like to so stretching materials so twin needling is a must and I would really like to master it. Thanks for this tutorial! :)
this is fantastic information- thank you so much! My Brother came with a twin needle and extra spool pin but I never tried to use them before- you have inspired me! Excellent video!!
This is bizzar because just yesterday I was thinking in buying one myself on amazon and only today I see this video. Now I really am going to buy one 😝
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I'm always scared of trying new things in the sewing machine, especially with my mom (the actual owner of said machine) looking at me like I'm about to blow up the whole house, hehe. Your video helped me, not only to clearly understand how to use the twin needle, but also to approach it calmly. Had a few bumps, no problem, just thread again and success!! I'm making a couple t-shirts for my sister and brother-in-law's anniversary, hope they like them. Tnx again.
I have finally built up enough confidence to actually get a sewing machine. My mother was a wonderful seamstress, same with my grandmother. My grandmother I had to help back out the needle out of her finger twice. I actually owned her singer, it stays in its place. I’m so afraid of that machine. RUclips has open up a world of wonder to me. I actually think I have enough confidence with all the videos that are out here that I could possibly sew. 🤞🏼😅
This was so helpful to know I can do this in my machine. I couldn’t find the info for my machine so this is so helpful. Just bought a twin stretch needle so I can fix the hems on my T-shirts. Thanks!
Whenever I use a double needle the threads start twisting together above the needles. Does this happen to you? It’s maddening because I want it to work! ⭐️ you answered my question! ❤️❤️
I definitely learned something NEW! I thought this was a look we were going for on the good side of the fabric. I have been running garments through the machine twice to get the look. I never knew it had a function to keep the hem stretchy.
I love your video! I used to use a twin needle when I was doing French heirloom sewing on Temple dresses and baby blessing gowns... And, it's been about 15 years since I've used it, but it seems that if you adjust the tension to pull the underside thread tighter, that it's how you achieve pin tucks. I know I used a twin needle for pintucks, I just don't remember what I did to make them. Is there a twin needle that's got a narrower space in between the needles? Because that might be the other way that I achieved the pintucks. I learned this method from Martha Pullen sewing. And it worked wonders! But like I said, it's been a long time! I'm sure it would be easy enough to research it. Thanks again for the video, I have subscribed and I'm going to share it with my daughters!❤
I was thinking about you earlier on today, about when you said your going to teach us how to use a twin needle on one of your previous diy sweater tutorials. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge & creative ideas. I love it!!!
Thank you so much 😩 I was looking for a video that straight up said watch stitch setting to use because everyone went straight to installing and threading but never explained stitch length and setting.
I use bobbins on an old 1960's machine I have. I keep a round piece of felt with a hole in the center on the spindle 1st, then the bobbin to make it flow freely. Also check your plastic bobbin to see if their is a slit or ruff spot on it that is catching the thread preventing it from flowing freely.
You can put your second thread in a cup behind the machine and feed from there. The thread will move freely. There are also spool holders you can buy if you do it often.
Did you ever announce the winners of the mini sewing machines yet from your give away? Or the time for the drawing has not happened yet? This twin needle tutorial is going to be helpful for anyone that going to use this gadget. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come
Thank youuuu 🤗 this was so helpful. I have one twin needle I found it in my sewing kit and I didn't know how to use it or if my sewing machine can use it. I was particularly confused about the bottom part I was thinking the machine needs too bobins 🤣🤣 silly me. I'm a beginer, I'm learning, your video is very useful. I can't wait to try this. Thanks again, you are great 😊
I am grateful for this video. I am still struggling with using this needle. I have a Singer Heavy Duty. I am playing with my dials and still have some tunneling. (It is either tunneling or breaking.) I am on my 4th twin needle after making 2 trips 40 mins away, one way. 😭 I am determined to get this. Has anyone had any luck using this type of machine? Basic foot, knit foot and walking foot did not assist the process.
Very interesting-- you're using a straight stitch on this? I thought with a twin needle you had to do a zigzag (and I can't even tell you where I got that information:-)).
Finally! Someone talks about the different plate for the twin needle... Thank you. So, would a "single needle machine" accommodate a double plate? And thank you so much!! 👏
You’d have to look up one specific for your machine. I know you can order them for some machines, but I’m not sure if that’s always the case especially if the machine is vintage.
@BlueprintDIY actually, I don't even have a machine yet. Just making sure to know what to buy. Thinking of a basic Singer "heavy duty..." Again, thank you so much
Hello Angelina I am a huge fan of this movement and your processes❤ I need to understand how does the bobbin thread get threaded with the twin needle ? Am I doing something wrong
Really enjoying your energy and videos. Some machines have a hole at the top of the machine that actually holds the extra spool pin. So you can put a spool or bobbin on it.
Thank you so much! Worked like a charm! Do you have a RUclips on sewing fleece and microfiber with this machine? Can’t seem to find the right combination of needle and settings.
Fantastic video! 😃 ❤️❤️ The tips you gave were tremendously helpful, and I appreciate you sharing the results of your testing, and after doing the video on the cut-out hoodie where you used it. I'd like to think I'd read the manual on my Singer HD machine before threading the machine, but if I'm being completely honest....yeah, probably not. I think I may have used twin needles back during the stone age 😂 when I was first learning to sew, but I'm not sure I ever understood the utility of them. I also had no idea an extra-wide twin needle was A Thing - that's what I'll definitely use whenever I pull some knits out to sew. I hope you and your family are continuing to stay safe during this upended holiday season, and will look forward to your next video!
Girlfriend! This is right on time for me. Tonight I'm starting SEVERAL t-shirt makeovers for Kwanzaa. Bless you. I'm in my "zone" now with this valuable piece of info. Thank you very much!
Try an empty bobbin on the cotton reel spike underneath a full bobbin so that it is on a narrower part of the cotton reel spike so that it spins more freely
Hi! When you are using a bobbin on the top, keep in mind that the spin of the thread is opposite the spin on the spool. If you are desperate to use the bobbin thread, you will need to reload onto another bobbin which puts it back to the same spin as the original spool. 😁
Check your manual. The 4452 already has 2 posts on top and can do twin needle work. If you have a local Singer dealer, they can usually walk you through it if you need it.

Is there a way to do Pin-tucking on your machine! I just bought a Brother sewing machine from JoAnns & I love to do Pun-tucking but no where did the directions explain even how to use the twin needle even though the machine came with one! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
OMG you are a lifesaver. However. I acquired a 4mm twin needle to hem a tshirt. Installed it on my Strong & Tough. Threaded it like you said. Set to straight stitch. But its hitting something solid down inside the machine when I try to cycle through manually. Its clearing foot, and wide slot plate. Its all the way down where its supposed to start coming back up. Never used a machine till I bought this one 6 months ago. I've really come a long way with pretty much exclusively your vids. Any idea why its doing this? Thank you so much.
Ok i fiddled around with the big bottom knob to get needle all the way to the left and its fine now. ran a few test stitches and ready to do the shirt now. sorry I panicked 😆.
So im a beginner and this may be a very dumb question 😅 but can this serve as a substitute for the overlock stitch ( My sewing machine doesn't have one) or it's just for hems in knot fabric and jeans?

Thank you never used a twin needle. Did not know how to use it. Video helps. Thank you.
