Hello to George, Kirk, and Eric.
Check me out on Instagram: www.instagram....
I ordered this a couple months ago not knowing anything about it. I fell in love with it as soon as I picked it up. It just felt so perfect in every way. I mean that quite literally. There were many things I would have changed if it were my design. Make it a little bigger, Give it a bigger nib, Make it a piston filler...etc. Still I love everything about it and now that I have spent quite bit of time with it, it has become one of my favorites and I wouldn't change a thing. I have now bought 4 more and even given one as a gift. It is an outstanding pen regardless of the ridiculously low price. I am now saving up my pennies for a Sailor Pro Gear Slim.
Wonderful, Duke! I am so glad that you had a nice experience with it. It is an amazing pen.
My Jinhao 82 is an EF. My only issue with it is that its a reeeeeallly xtra EF. Put a wet ink in it and it's perfect. I have a M on my Jinhao x750 which writes amazingly well. I plan on putting some sheening ink in it.
That is wonderful. It is so great when you connect with a pen.
The pens do give off the kitchen appliance vibe!😊 For the price I agree that they would be great starter pens! Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching!
Makes me think of 1940s fashion
How could $3 - 7 NOT be "worth it" for a fountain pen with a converter? I first saw the J82 a few months ago on Doodlebud's channel and immediately ordered a set of 3 for under $20 on Amazon. All three of those, in the pastel/translucent colors are truly "eye candy". They look like the small pastel Sailor pens and my white/blue looks just like the new Pelikan M200 "pastel blue" aka Sky/Cloud pen. Those are medium nibs and all write like a dream. They are amazingly well made, too! So, I ordered a fine point in a single translucent blue/gray, equally delightful in appearance but that nib is scratchy and probably needs adjusting. But, who can complain at this price!
I think these are a great value and a perfect way to experience using a fountain pen / converter / bottled ink for a beginner. IMPORTANT note: a standard cartridge leaked in this last pen, so I'm sticking with converters which work well.
I am so glad that they resonate with you. Thanks so much for watching.
@@HemingwayJones So fun that I saw you and Tom and commented several times on your LIVE pen discussion (my real name there). It took a minute to snap that I had just communicated with you here about the J82 pens. Synchronicity. I am hooked on these 82s and feeling safe to experiment with nibs and inks the way I would NEVER try on a $200 pen much less the levels you and Tom were discussing! I see Tom has a new episode... off to watch. Thanks for your thoughtful book comments. As a writer, I love it. 🖋
A Jinhao 82 in tibetan blue is my Baystate Blue pen. Just OK, but I’ve had always needed to correct ink flow on all the Jinhaos I’ve got, lots of skips and in some cases they just don’t write without pressing the pen. A quick and easy tune, but a tune nevertheless, and there are lots of pen users who don’t know how to tune the nibs by themselves yet.
Quality control over their nibs is still a huge Jinhao issue that I’ve not witnessed on other Chinese pens.
Exactly! This is my experience also.
This pen is a super value. I bought a green one with a fine nib. It's currently inked with Organics Studio Aldous Huxley. It's very smooth, the quality seems to me to be on par with a $50 dollar pen. For $3.83! I ordered another one in coffee brown. I wouldn't be embarrassed to give or receive it as a gift. It's in the rotation with a Jinhao 80, ax X159, as well as my Montblanc 146.
Thanks for another fine informational video
Thank you! You made some fine choices there!
Another great video, I also want to compliment you on that amazing jumper!
Thank you, Jim! I appreciate that very much. Thanks for noticing. All the best.
I saw this video and realised I had a Jinhao 82 in Blue with gold sparkles. Medium nib. In my pocket.
I have since bought the Jinhao 82 mini with green blue and cream ice swirls. Great.
Wonderful! It’s great when you have a history with a pen. Thanks for watching.
These are really beautiful looking pens with quite a few colour options available. For the price it's pretty well made, feels good and writes nicely at least mine does. I got one recently and a few more are on the way.
I am glad you reviewed this pen too.
I totally agree! Thanks so much for being here and for watching.
One of my pen pals sent me one of these recently in black and I love it! The first thing I did was swap the F nib for a Broad Goulet #5 nib, and it's awesome!!!! The pastel colors are very tempting!!! I'm so happy to see your video ... more people will know about this great affordable option!
Hi Chris! I am so glad that you enjoyed it. I need to swap nibs more. I rarely customize pens. As I look to add fewer pens, I think this is a great strategy for refreshing the ones I have. Thanks so much!
I appreciate your choice of music by Satie; good music is a rarity in most RUclips videos, and it's a welcome change. Thanks!
Thanks! I use Gymnopedie quite a bit. 1 & 3 are in the YT Audio Library.
Thx for this review! I ordered 3 pens with fine nib after watching and love using them for sketching!
Wonderful! Congratulations on an excellent choice.
Hello HJ. Another fine video. Loved the backdrop. Very colorful. What better way of discovering fountain pens then to have a $3 pen available? We should all expand back into the written world that was once a daily part of everyone's life.
Here, here! Thanks very much, My Friend!
Even though I don't see owning a Jinhao pen in my future, I quite enjoyed this video! I really like the look of the avocado green and so I was curious to hear your thoughts, Hemingway. This video is a great review for those thinking about entering the fountain pen world (and subsequent rabbit hole!).
Thank you! I am glad that you enjoyed it.
As usual, great job presenting the details of a fountain pen...thanks.
Thank you!
I might try one out. They look nice. great video HJ
Thank you John!
Hi HJ! The Jinhao 82 is a pen that graces my collection. I have at least four of them! One is the Avocado color that you show, (anxious to try a sample of avocado ink in that pen.) So many memories of the Avocado appliances back in the day! Mom and Dad bought an Avocado refrigerator from Sears and we had that thing for YEARS! We had a hand-held electric mixer in that same color to match the fridge. Anyway, the 82 was my EDC pen for quite a while, never had to worry about losing them. Pretty much mine are all F or XF nibs, now, since I saw your video, I may have to get a medium, too! Interestingly I wanted to fill a pen with some of the Herbin Lie de the ink, and so I picked my Ivory 82 for that. Seems to love the ink, and have been writing with it a lot in the last week or two. Along with my Lamy Safari with the vintage Waterman's ink in it.
I love my 82s. Well, I love all my Jinhaos but you know, none of mine skip. Smooth as butter!
That’s great! So happy for you. I wish I had had equal luck to yours.
@@HemingwayJones Maybe the nibs need a bit of tweaking?
@@sunnycharacter Do you think!? Yup, therein lies the rub; the literal rub!
I only use pens for sketching. I'm thinking about these because I can match the ink to the pen for quick grabbing. Having the converter is really nice compared to Pilot and others. I love the idea of the Preppy pre-filled disposable but the nibs are thick.
All great reasons. Thanks for watching.
Thank’s for the review. They look neat, and definitely worth trying. ! The Jinhao x750 is one of my favourite pens, irrespective of price, and have always written beautifully for me. You have to be careful not to leave one inked up too long without using it, though, because seals are decent but not spectacular.
Thanks so much for watching. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I bought a pair on ebay. A fine and medium. I love the size. With both pens, I had to press down on the nibs enough to permanently spread the tines to get a smooth flow of ink. I also like the fact that when you have it clipped in your shirt pocket, it doesn't protrude so much that it gets hung up in your cars shoulder belt.
Hi Stan! I think that is the reality with Jinhao; sometimes you need to tweak them. All the best and thanks for the comment.
Interesting pen, thank you for your review. I value your thoughts on pens.
Thanks for watching! And thanks for the kind words! It’s always a pleasure to hear from you.
Good video, decided to order three. Looks nice and it fills some of my void of pens I can use and not care about when I’m on the run and don’t want to take good pen. Also I won’t think twice about passing it on.
Hello Jim! Wonderful! I am so glad that you enjoyed it. I hope you have good luck with it.
I spent quite a few years in school writing with cheap fountain pens from Walgreens. Schaefer pens, maybe? They used ink cartridges, and were actually pretty good. I wore out the nib on more than one of those pens over the years. This pen is so inexpensive maybe it’s a modern day replacement for those cheap ones I used so much.
That sounds amazing.
I have a number of Jinhao pens, and I have given some away. The Jinhao 80 has been a great hit. The Dadao 9016 is a great writer but my favorite one is the Centennial. My cherished pens are my Conway Stewart, Visconti Mythos, Parker 51 and my Waterman's100 year pen that is as old as I am, both of us were born in 1944! Then there are my Pelikan pens which are very lovely!
Interesting video. I bought mine off Amazon as a 4 pc set called the Transparent Fluorescence Set just to get the dark blue Galaxy color. They all 4 came with a fine nib, and so far I've only been using the Galaxy Blue pen. It has been an amazingly good writing pen. The other colors in the set were brown, light blue, and yellow. I'm planning on passing the light blue & yellow pens on to my oldest son as well as a couple of other pens as well. The cost turned out to be $7.50 a pen which is not much for a pen.
These are so inexpensive. That is a big part of the fun. Thanks!
Like many I purchased 3 different coloours the day they were released and all mine are and write fantastically. Jinhao are stepping up their game for sure as not one of mine including some other recent Jinhao purchases have been magnificent pens. Due to the cost I'm not overly concerned if they get lost or broken. Just like you said they are a nice option to give to someone who is interested in trying out fountain pens. Nice and balanced review as usual Mr Jones but I do have to say my pens haven't missed a beat. I've had no skipping or hard starts but it could be the ink I use in them which are very fountain pen friendly. Perhaps try a different ink in the 82's ?? I have two more (translucent ones - Blue and Green) arriving next week so I may give away one of my first lot someone at work keen on trying a fountain pen.
Hi Frank! I sometimes try out new inks in new pens, so it’s a bit of a time saver. I think that Kon Peki may have gone better. I also think that I am a very light writer and so some nibs do not agree with me as much. I am forming a theory that modern nibs may be tuned for a heavier hand. I still like these pens though. They have nice dimensions.
Hi Hemingway. Thank you for your impressions of the Jinhao 82. I don't own one. I am waiting for Jinhao to copy the Visconti Homo Sapiens before I buy another one of their pens lol. No seriously, I think I have enough of their pens and really want to explore other brands now. Not saying I'll never buy another Jinhao but this one is not for me.
At this rate, they will get there!
I bought 4. They all look great. Only one nib was a bit of a dry writing dud. I imagine, someone who knew what they were doing could probably tune in a bit wetter. My biggest complaint is build quality. Both ends of the pen unscrew and fall off. Ironically, the one that wrote poorly was also the one that fell apart it’s first day out. I got home and realized a piece had fallen off and now it’s all of worthless too me, beyond a parts pens, if I buy another one the same color… which I will because the trouble pen was also my favorite color. I’d say, when someone buys an 82, unscrew both ends and superglue the threads.
Hi
Recently i got my Jinhao 82 it is a cute little pen and i love the color selection of it. Besides of the looks my question is did you tweaked or made any modifications to the nib .My 82 is mediım nib but it writes dryer than my liking and it doesn't feel so smooth.I am kind of in the begining of my fountain pen adventure(fountain pen noob) and would like to know if you have any advice on making this pen write wet and smoother. Thanks For the reply. Love your videos.
Thank you so much! I did work on it. These nibs are very inconsistent. There are videos on YT on How To make a nib write wetter. Search for these and it should help. Thanks for watching.
@@HemingwayJones i tried some of the methods but it didn’t work consistent just asked if you had any personal secret tweak. Thanks for the reply.
Good review of this pen. I don't have anything by Jinhao, but I can see it being a good option to hand out as gifts. I think I would buy several, ink them with something that should perform well such as an Iroshizuku Kon-Peki, and write a few pages to make sure there are no duds. Also, it might be a good option to try my hand at nibmeistering!
Here, here, My Friend! Definitely check them. I find that the Mediums are better than the Fines with flow. All the best!
Hi. A very interesting vidio and quite watchable. I finally broke and purchased a Jinhao X159, fortunately I got a great nib and it's a not too shabby performer. I totally agree with you on these pens being great gift ideas, look how popular the Jinhao 🦈 had become.🤗 Cheers and all the best.
Hello John! Thanks so much for watching and I am glad you enjoyed it. This one was fun for me. Thank you.
Jinhao 82 has been reviewed by Doug of the Inkquiringminds RUclips channel and his review like yours was favourable. I ordered two 82s in dark green but with the gold nib and clip . The pen is a replica of the Sailor Pro-gear Slim and is 5 % of the price. Here in Australia the price includes free postage from China . I’m a natural skeptic but seeing is believing ! Under the international postage union set off I believe the Chinese Government must be aware that parcels arriving here are delivered free of charge as part of the reciprocal postal Union arrangements. If Jinhao had to pay the Australian Postage internal parcel rate that would possibly exceed the price we pay
Hi Martin! International treaties always have an impact. it’s tough to ship to the UK right now. Enjoy!
Ok.. I'm hearing you... Subscribed - my only fountain pen channel. 😊👍
I ordered mine about a month+ ago. Followed the tracking passing customs in China and then leaving the country, which alone took close to 2 weeks, but tracking then ceased. Whilst I would have naturally thought it's on a plane and it can't take that long to land, I'm now beginning to think it must be on a boat it's that slow!
I'm in no particular rush, however still eager for its arrival to check out. I thought, despite all those mentioning its resemblance to the pro gear slim (excluding nib), it was more akin to a Lecoule overall. I ordered mine in F (as usual with jinhao) & my expectation is that it will be similar to a Lecoule mf with less feedback. I'll have to wait to confirm my prediction.
I enjoyed the Erik Satie, probably one of the tracks that first sparked some interest in classical, when I was a kid. However, I'm not sure it worked that well as in parts it was a tad too loud with some piano notes fighting against your words. Perhaps, some volume mixing...lower when you're speaking, minorly higher during the pauses. 😁
Over and above that with these cheaper pens I often wonder what there really is to review given the cost is similar to a cup of coffee. However, I do see there's interest across the internet, so respect that fact. Notwithstanding, I'm here and I feel a 'new' pen for review, (regardless of cost), makes more sense and is of higher interest, than an old/established model that's merely been released in a new colour.
I feel the jinhao nibs are the same across the board, other than the larger x159 & so will provide much the same writing experience.
I understand we all want to justify the considerably higher prices of their Japanese & European counterparts, but in reality one should not try to do so. If you're happy with the quality and writing experience here then everything else will appear to be ridiculously overpriced. By contrast if one finds faults then perhaps the 'name brand' options will make sense.
Cheers.
Thank you and welcome! I am happy to have you here.
Have you ever tried any of Ryan Krusacs's pens? I know he frequents a lot of pen shows and I'm hopefully going to see him at the Atlanta pen show in March. He has a lot of interesting materials and his engravings/art look really unique.
I haven’t. But that sounds amazing!
A very impressive pen for the price.
Truly!
Great review HJ. You should look into the Jinhao 80. It’s a clone on the Lamy 2000 down to the textured finish resembling Macralon. However it uses the traditional Lamy nib. So far I’ve seen it in 8 different colors, and it’s a cartridge/converter. I ordered a few and replaced the Jinhao nibs with Lamy nibs. Excellent. I paid about $7 but now I see them for $12.
That’s brilliant, Gino! Thanks for the heads up and the tips. It would be good for the channel. (Of course, I probably should get a Lamy 2000 one of these days).
@@HemingwayJones based on my experience, you will not be disappointed. A true “workhorse “ pen.
Love my Jinhao 82s. Very decent writers. Own 8 of them!
Awesome!
All the excitement about this pen is tempting me, but it’s not my style, and even a few dollars is too much for something you don’t really want. Thanks for the reminder to cherish everything, even the inexpensive stuff you own. We lose sight of that too often.
I agree there! It never makes sense to buy something you do not need. Well said.
I have this in an EF nib, and it’s scratchy on Rhodia paper, but smooth on Tomoe River paper. Either way, I enjoy it.
1. Yay, Jinhao! I love Jinhao.
2. Perfect pen for those who like the looks of a Sailor Pro Gear but would rather pay $3 than $300 for a writing tool.
3. I am VERY curious what percentage of Jinhao sales are local in China.
Thanks so much! I wonder how much is domestic too. Perhaps the fude nib is more popular there.
It if functions well, i could see it being a viable choice for a first fountain pen! Have you done any finial swapping yet, Hemingway?
Good Morning, My Friend! I have not. I am not a big customizer of pens. I should embrace that. Usually, I’ll buy another pen rather than swapping something. Now that I am trying to make far fewer purchases, making do and upgrading is the path forward. Thanks!
Jinhao pens are just awesome if your on a budget..and make great gifts to friends who are new to fountain pens.....also..my kaweco sports made it through security afterall!! And no leaks on the plane🛩 whatsoever. 😊
I thought they would be fine! So glad!
Have a nice trip!
Is it available in piano black? 😉
I saw black one. Thanks.
Great review. I like Jinhao, and have three. Another affordable fountain pen brand on AliExpress is Fuliwen. Are you familiar? I have their 2051 in red. They're available on ebay, Amazon, etc. too. I love the shape and style. It's a different look - curvy, yet sleek. Nice weight and writes smoothly.😊
Hello, MelissaSue, thanks so much for telling me about these. I did not know about them. I will check them out. Thanks so much for the help.
Watching these have encouraged me to add to my Montblanc 146 Medium (bought when I was 24) (now inked with Iroshizuku Shin-Kai), by adding a Pelikan M800 Broad (Aurora Black), Pilot Custom 823 (Noodler's 54th Massachusetts) and Kaweco Brass Sport Fine (Edelstein Tanzanite).
You've cost me some coin, Hemingway; but I'm loving these pens and this experience.
Pilot 823 with Medium nib. Can a pen be too perfect?
So sorry, but those are some epic pens! Well chosen, My Friend.
@@HemingwayJones
Have one more spot in my beautiful-looking & beautiful-smelling Galen Leather 5-pen case. (Oh my goodness, what lovely and responsive folks from Turkey in the midst of all their recent tragedy! We've been messaging back-and forth and have become friends. I couldn't recommend them any more highly.)
So . . . what should #5 & the very last be?
Lamy 2000 is iconic, and I appreciate mid-century modern design, but I'm pretty conservative.
I'm open to vintage (my dad has a beautiful grey Parker Vacuumatic, and he knows I crave it; but despite his appreciation for my new hobby, it looks like I'm gonna have to wait for the will on that).
Visconti Bronze Age would be a definite contender, but the clip design is too much for me.
Looking for the perfect #5 and then retire at 55. Whaddaya think?
@@HemingwayJones
You're gonna say finish it off with 149 in Burgundy or Stresemann M1005, aren't you?
@@markuba1034 149 in Burgundy is a dream pen! I wouldn’t do that to you, though. You already have an awesome collection! It’s always great to spend time with the pens you have.
Great review.
Thank you!
That Buttercup Yellow pen is a thing of Beauty. I cannot believe the price ✒
Hi Avec! Nice to hear from you! Isn’t it fun!? Love the color.
You got a better out of the box experience with a Jinhao pen for once! To be honnest I would clean or at least rinse any brand new pen, cheap or expensive. Better safe than sorry, and also I like to try out the filling mecanism of the pens just for the sake of it 😅
Thanks very much for noticing. It’s true. You make excellent points!
I’ve the Pastel yellow with gold trim..All is well with this pen except that it ‘runs dry’ (I tried 3 different inks).. but can’t complain considering the price !
Also, my wife loved it so much that she grabbed it from me, so $6 well spent !
My Wife often appropriates my pens! Well chosen.
Try the medium nib. Wet and smooth writers. All of mine are M nibs except one fude.
I’ve never ordered off AliExpress but these Chinese fountain pens seem to be gaining traction in the community.
My Jinhao x159 was a bust but an easy Amazon return. I’ve thought about ordering four at once to just keep the best writing one but that seems wasteful.
That is more or less what I did this time around. I hoped one would be good and it was. $3 each was minimal investment, but you make an excellent point. The other one that isn't as good, will be with a little tweak and then I will pass it on. All the best!
I love the colors I’ve seen. The green and pastel yellow you show here are so cool.
Alas, I have zero interest in regulation Chinese fine nibs.
Although 5-6 times pricier, I’m far happier owning and recommending the Sailor Lecoule which has a better steel nib. For me, even this amazingly low price isn’t enough to make me jump to get a pen with a nib that leaves me cold. And I have tired out a few Jinhao 82s just because…But yes, the colors are irresistible.
I think that the medium nibs are much better, but still not perfect. It has often fallen apart for me with Jinhao at the nibs.
The finials come off so you can mix and match finals and caps.
How fun. I didn’t know. All the best.
Can this take other nibs? I’ve heard 5.5 and 5.
I believe so. Check out Chris Saenz Channel. She swaps nibs and it quite good at it.
Hi
In the last couple months, have given away 3 Jinhao pens to 2 of my friends. The idea was to share the joy we all experience with flowing ink. Both my friends had issues with these Jinhao pens skipping and hard starting because of the ink. Jinhao pens can be very fussy--one ink can write smooth as silk while another ink will be a nightmare.
Please remember, our newbie friends will not have a selection of inks or the knowledge of how to clean, flush, and change out one ink for another while they suffer in silence and go back to their disposable Bic ballpoint.
A better choice for a $5 starter gift fountain pen may be a Pilot Varsity (6 for $13) or a Platinum Preppy ($8 for one or $25 for a pack of 7). The point is not the price, but trying to get the best, most dependable, and most enjoyable writing experience for your friend's first fountain pen.
PS. I love what you are doing!
I find that the Medium nibs are much better than the Fine. I had much better luck with them and the increased ink flow helps. Thanks for the kind words! Thanks for watching.
I discovered the Preppy early on, and it's remained a favorite. Its nonassuming form factor (and color variety) is attractive to kids, and they take to it readily. Plus its a Platinum, so always reliable.
I have only had good experiences with jinhao pens. the feathers are very good for me. I use my x 159 daily and look forward to every use. By the way: I would pay more than 100 € for jinhao pens.
Wow! I do love your enthusiasm. That Feather pen is lovely. I am so glad that you have connected with them. That’s a wonderful way to stay inspired. Thanks for chiming in and stop be again soon.
I’d recommend this pen to anyone who would like an absurdly good bargain. I have to wonder how Jinhao produces a pen similar in size and style to the Sailor Pro-gear slim at 5% of the price
They have an amazing production capacity.
Or: why do folks like me pay 10 times as much for an identical-looking Sailor. There must be a reason.
For the record, the 14k gold nib on the Sailor PG Slim is leagues above any Chinese generic steel fine nib on a Jinhao or the others.
The real comparison, though, should be with the $30 Sailor Lecoule with the steel nib. I think that pen is superior to the Jinhao 82 on everything, but the price.
Skipping is what kills it for me with jinhao. You can not do quick sketches or strokes with a jinhao nib.
I’ve got 6 of these and not one skips, some are fine the rest medium. My fave are the mediums. Not scratchy at all.
I am on the fence with this one.... but the colors are so cool .. As you know I have a compulsion to collect them all.. Please stop staring at my twsbi collection I know..... lol
The best decision I've made, to curb my hoarding instincts, is to establish as principle to never buy more than one of any type of pen. ...unless I "need" different nibs, ...or "intend" to be able to give it away at any moment (I've really been kind of a distributor of Safaris, X750, 159, Baoer 801, and lately, Faber Grip) . ...I think this will be "intent to give it away". 🤔 (I only give away pens that are good though! I've tuned the X750s and 159s, so I do have some ungivable collections because the pens are not good enough, ...and I do have some multiple pens I simply don't want to part with). This Jinhao 82 would collide with my compulsive urge to distribute Faber 'Grips' though (it's so dam good, the world's best "cheap" FP IMO), but it's only a third of the price, so I'll keep my options open.
Sounds like a great plan, My Friend!
😇🩷🙏🙌
Thanks!
