- Great White Sharks in British waters, have they ever been here, will they ever be? Let’s find out.
Apologise, the audio is really low on this! Turn it right up! I originally uploaded this last week,, I had an issue and had to change some of the overlay content. The original video had 180k views in its first week. If you're watching this again, thank you kindly! Most of my reserach is carried out via the internet and might not be 100% accurate, to the best of my knowledge it is accurate.
If you would like to sponsor a future adventure, or towards my Shark exploration fund, link below! Thank you Legends :)

This video has audio issues apologise it’s a codec issue, I’ve started making it into a great white shark series: check out a video here:

Great Video mate 👍
But aren't our waters too murky for sharks? One of the reasons why don't swim in them. A few steps in and I see my own feet anymore. The only place where this is worse, is at the coast of the North Sea in Germany. You never know what is there with you. Very creepy.
Loved this thank you
@@annajones7856 there’s a series going into more detail here
Interested in Great White Sharks in British waters? I'm starting a series about it!
ruclips.net/video/SeQUvb0c_hU/видео.html
There is an audio issue with this video, apologise for this, RUclips audio codec isn’t compatible with how I made the video. I will make a mini series of each of the parts of this video. Thanks all
off course they are on the seas, on all the waters are withe sharks, even the megaladon, always remember humans got boundaries, animals don’t,
SOUND IS TOO LOW
Wow this had 180k views before I had to re-upload from last week, I had to make a few amendments for copyright purposes. So, the question remains... Are Great Whites in British waters? have they ever been, will they ever be? I loved reading the comments last time! Keep them coming - All the best - "Matt the Islander"
There also another shark video I made here:
ruclips.net/video/zKUevZV9Kxc/видео.html
Great video! I'm from the UK, but live in Noosa now. Can you share some more information about what happened in Noosa?
@@nathaniel4334 of course! It involved a sizeable tiger shark, which I was told aren’t very prolific in this area?
Keep up the good work 👌
I definitely believe great whites venture into UK waters
I sent the information of the 2003 sighting in Ullapool to a retired shark biologist friend in Tahiti called Richard Johnson and he said there were absolutely no reasons why Great Whites couldn't be long term residents on the west coast of Scotland. Plenty of food, right temps because they can quite happily live in less than 10C water. Also, they have been spotted in Alaskan waters which ain't exactly warm. Dick said there was little chance of seeing any unless you had a fleet of cameras etc. in the water and a dedicated team looking for them. I volunteer! lol
Sounds fantastic Stan, don’t suppose you can scuba dive? 😬
Just to clarify the audio is very low (turn it right up) original is fine, some strange RUclips codec issue! 🤪 I’m getting several comments a day about it. Hence me breaking this video down into several segments with better audio! Thanks for watching 🦈 cheers
Scientists believe that global warming will almost guarantee, that great white sharks will be in abundance around UK shores within 30 years, mainly due to raising in water temperatures and our abundance in seals.
There is no doubt in my mind, they are already out there during our summer months, although it is very few currently.
@@-Old-School-Gamer Global warming is bollocks cycles
We have it turned right up were practically lip reading
I love sharks :D
I've got the volume at max cant hear you
I’m also a certified scuba diver and within the diving community it’s been common knowledge that there have been Great Whites in the Med for many years. So why not here too? Great vid 👍
Thanks Simon, next one in the series is due out today or tomorrow “shark attacks in Uk”
The biggest he caught on rod and line was in the med..just off the coast of malta
Because the Atlantic is a lot colder
@@fatbroccoli8 The water temperature around the UK is just right. Perfect in fact. Great Whites are common at the similar latitudes elsewhere. But don't forget that White sharks are a vulnerable species, so sometimes difficult to spot even where they are known to be common. It would be incredibly surprising if they don't occasionally come into British waters given the vast distances that they travel.
@@fatbroccoli8 One of the biggest GWS ever was caught off the coast of Canada so colder water isn't an issue.
This is a good channel with decent structure and rhythm, I wasn’t bored, thank you
Trust me, with my attention span things have to be fairly snappy! Thank you
When I lived on Shetland there were local news stories of fishermen reporting great white sightings.
Only just found this channel and all very fascinating. Always thought that a small percentage of sightings must be credible. Keep up the good work 👍
Great work Matt the Islander.
Two killer Wales Orca, spotted off Penzance yesterday may 6th ,hope our seals had the sense to stay on dry land ☺
Now that I can believe, but a great white I think nah they misidentified something.
@@Del-Blanco-Diablo no there was one tracked there is not many heard of hear because less ppl go in the water
Orcas will come onto land to catch seals
@@rd3443 that’s not true, in the summer (the only time it would be warm enough for great whites) the sea is full of people
I know this is months later but once orcas appear in an area great whites will disappear,I saw a doc that they are terrified of orcas
Another great video, took me a few days 2 watch it cuz been visiting family, but yet again its left me wanting more lol🤣cant wait 4 the next one
Great video. Very informative and I learned a lot from it. Thank you.
Awesome footage, I love where you live.
Great info, much respect from Australia
I find this very educational and exciting to think these magnificent animals are in uk. Thank you for sharing this
I only hope that if they do venture into our waters that we show them respect!
Our waters? It's their water, we're the visitors.
Ha..... respect..... ha.... Course we won't.
Humans showing animals respect...yeah right
Well presented chum... Well done you've earned a like from me. Good work.
As a guy from California who has lived in both Ireland and the UK, I always found it baffling why Carcharodon wasn't at least an occasional visitor to the region. I understand that there are porbeagles and makos hanging around sometimes, but many of the conditions seem ideal for great whites. I guess the local seal populations are relieved though!
I would never send my mum on a shark finding expedition. When we were small we went on a boat in Scotland and she started squealing "come and see the dolphin look quick"
It was a buoy!
I have been lucky enough to see a basking shark 😊
Really liked this mate 👍
Love your work - keep going 👍🏻
Great film. Much more interesting than Springwatch! Nice accent too, it's like Mark Cavendish telling you all about sharks.
I don't see why they wouldn't be here. Another thing to possibly consider is that there are nowhere near as many people going in the water in the UK so that would decrease the chances of seeing one I think
Damn straight! 🤣🤣🤣
Went to Turkey a few years ago in May, went in the sea, lovely temp, had a great time.
Came home, went to Bournemouth for the day at the end of July, went in the sea... F##KING HAVE A WORD! Jumped straight back out. Still Baltic!! 😅😅😅
not as many people go into the sea but I bet the same ammount, or more, watch the sea regularly
There is a simple reason Orcas Great White sharks are absolutely terrified of Orcas
@@davidmcintyre8145 I'm near the Moray coast. There's a pod of Orca cruising up and down there as there are so many seals. If there were just the seals, no orca and Whites were spotted off this coast I may reconsider my surfing habit.
@@kopilit True I also am not far from the Moray Firth but it is a fact that Orca are a known predator of White Sharks and one shark was recorded as swimming across the Atlantic after hearing Orcas
Smashing it pall keep it up!!!
Really enjoyed this mate thank you,
Yes sharks are fascinating! Thank you for sharing this info with us.
Really interesting,my gramp seen a shark of the coast of Fishguard west Wales. He's passed away now and can't remember what kind of shark he said it was.great video matt, enjoyed this bud 👍🦈
Cheers bud, west wales has some big sharks, maybe a porbeagle. Thanks for watching 🏴
Rule of thumb for sharks: If there is food they like, and the water is in their range... they are there. Just because we haven't proved it yet doesn't mean they aren't there.
This was so good ! Thanks
Loved this documentary. Great content and earned a new sub. 😃😃😃

Hey buddy Great video mate .love it keep up the awesome work and a big hello from ireland .
They most certainly are here alright
There is no such thing as an untapped resource. If the food there there already here
Nakumi the 3 tonne beast tagged by ochean search is already across the mid atlantic ridge and shes going to pup shortly
Great white sharks are 100% in our waters, especially after watching this.. I learned so much. thanks mike
Yet no one has ever put any footage up from their phones, ever .
Some people just ain't as smart as you Ryan,so no biggie m8.

Really interesting video mate
Amazing video deserves so much more exposure
Great video mate, I have long been fascinated by sharks and Great White. I have no doubt that they could be or make it to British, Irish and Scottish waters, especially in the future. But I don't expect them to be a common sighting here.
Well presented, well done. I feel it’s only a matter of time before we have conclusive proof of their presence, probably in the summer months
Around now is the time we normally get reports / sightings 🤞
Exactly... It's only a matter of time.
Great video man. Very interesting. Well done
Cheers dude
Great video, thanks.
Love your channel well done, keep up the good work.
Thanks Debs! Very much appreciated feedback
@@AirbornePirates Your more than welcome, love your channel.
Great video! Cant believe this guy doesnt have more followers
Great video and good info
Great Video, excellently produced and delivered. You did mention it but to emphasise, the Great White is of a type called Lamnid Sharks who can vary their own temperature by 25 degrees C.
Non Lamnid sharks have a body temperature equal to the water temperature.
Thanks Robert yes my next video is about sharks in British waters, essentially a more detailed version as to what was in this video
After watching another installment about sharks from TheMalibuArtist I was automatically sent your way!
Awesome! He gets some great drone footage of great whites!
Really enjoyed this video just subscribed
Thank you for this video as a fellow shark enthusiast keep it up
Cheers dude!
I was in st ives last year, as i swam out 2 seals came swimming into the harbour. It wernt until i got back to land id been told that a shark (i believe it was a confused and hungry blue shark) was swimming around pretty much the same place as me id never seen it but it made sense as to why the seals went in land to shallower water.
There’s some big blues around St Ives too. Nice one I’ll include this
Great Video thanks.

Great info. Really enjoyed this video. Personally i can't see any reason why they won't come into our waters.
Is it not too cold here?

seen a shark in Porthcawl last week had to look twice realising it was my X MRS.....keep up the good work bud..

Was at beach with parents as a child. Stole of fish cam in. Then a basking shark. I was in dinghy screamed though it was jaws. Couldn't swim jumped out boat freaking out trying to get to beach. At age 5 I was scared huge
Cool video mate keep it up
A friend of mine was on the mouth of the Clyde in a row boat and bumped in to what he thought was a floating tree but it was an orca. Surprised me as I didn't know we had them in our waters.
Very interesting video 👍
You definitely have the voice to talk about paranormal and folklore etc etc
...keep goin mate..love this shit..be great if you could film one of these..in British waters...lookin forward to next vid👍
Cheers J D, yes would be great to get out and chum the waters and see what comes to investigate
I'm pretty dam sure that you guys have Great White sharks off your coast! I live in Louisiana and we never thought that the great white sharks came into the Gulf of Mexico and especially as far as Louisiana! Recently my cousin was fishing for redfish at the mouth of the Mississippi river and after one of the bull redfish were completely cut in half my cousin thought that it might just be a bull shark but after hooking another bull redfish while reeling it in he saw a giant disturbance in the water behind the fish and when he got the fish within 13 feet of the boat the shark took the redfish cutting it in half and showed itself to be a 13 to 14 feet great white shark! After that the shark circled the boat for almost 5 minutes when my cousin decided to pick up and move to a different place! Now within the last few years since they have been tagging the sharks on the east coast of the United States a few have been tracked following the coast of Florida all of the way to Texas and back! Now we had no idea that the sharks entered the Gulf of Mexico until this happened! There were some rumors of welders working on oil rigs in the Gulf seeing giant sharks but the sharks never got close enough to identify what species they were! Plus trawlers have reported giant holes in their nets that only something massive could have done! Now we don't have any seals down here but we do have giant Blue fin tuna which come to feed off the Louisiana coast and some 1000 lbs tuna have been caught below Louisiana! So the fact that you guys have seals on your coast bet your ass that you have great white sharks off your coast maybe not a lot of them but they will definitely follow the food! Peace out!
@@williamoleschoolarendt7016 thanks buddy! Very informative. I do think we will see them confirmed in the next 5 years
Y’all are so lucky. I desperately want to visit the UK. Anyways I live in the San Francisco Bay Area where the Red Triangle is and Great Whites are always in our waters. It’s quite normal to swim in the water here from the time we are babies. My father used to swim a few miles out with nothing but a snorkel and spear off the coast of Santa Cruz. When I was a baby he would put me on his back and swim me out. His mother (my grandma) was from Liverpool. I think swimmers in the UK won’t have many issues with them. Mostly just be smart. If there is a lot of seals in an area, don’t swim right there. Also watch for huge swarms of birds diving. This is usually a sign of a bait ball and sharks are always around there. It would be cool to hear there are sharks in UK waters.
There are sharks, just not man eaters
Why are we lucky?
@@simonjames4984 to be in the UK. I wish I could go there. It’s such a beautiful nation! 😊
@@fatbroccoli8 your right I didn’t type what I meant. That happens with text sometimes. My apologies.
@@RuizKlan79 UK isn't all that. Its a very overcrowded country. Large areas are very run down and poverty is rife in many areas. Sure there are nice areas aswell but it's not like your holiday brochure!
I live in NS Canada and the last 3 summers there been Great whites filmed in our waters. And as you pointed out water temps about the same here as over In the UK. There was group tagging them and just wish I had the site to see if they been back or not!
Defiantly food for thought. Well done. Excellent.....
I was in Devon swimming when this man was really far out on his boat, everyone on the beach saw the shark but no-one on the beach new what species it was until the boat driver who said. his name was John and said that he was fishing ( which everyone saw ) he put a fish into the water when he realed it out it was big in half and so he put another one in felt a pull, the shark pulled it up and swam up with it and revealed it’s self to be a 10-11 foot long great white shark and everyone was terrified the shark swam around the boat for another minute or so and then went I was terrified to go in the sea there ever again!
I've always thought that they would be here, it would be great to get some firm footage to confirm this, remember it's their home and we are the visitors!
I think they are and have been off the British coast for years. Great food source, appropriate water temperature so why not?
Great video ….cheers 👌👍❤️
Cheers apologise about audio
I was fishing of Northumberland coast of the rocks . There was plenty of seals about and I heard a commotion about 200 yards of shore and the seals swam of panicking I seen a fin chasing behind them . There is plenty of food up here and there is already killer whales spotted so I recon there about but not in great numbers
Love Sharks, their stunning sensory array&have studied them for years.
Amazing what Peter Benchley&Steven Spielberg have caused!
I do not and will not swim in any Ocean-PERIOD.
There are here no doubt.
Excellent channel and appreciate your passion m8.
Take care out there.

That shark that travelled to Ireland, only went for the Guinness.
Worked with a bloke who was a trawlerman out of Falmouth who reckoned he and his mates saw GW's in the English channel when they were fishing. Swore blind they were too big to be Mako's or Porbies!! Sadly he popped his clogs a few years ago so I can't verify this.
We have loads booming in numbers off south Australia can sometimes see them off the coast of victoria where its more colder waters so it wouldnt be a suprise as cornwall is simllar
Sorry but I need to give credit where it is due because I surfed there. The place in South Africa where the first started filming the white sharks coming out of the water was at Gansbai. It is situated further west on Walker Bay. Near Hermanus. At any rate quite a nice but of information you are sharing and thank you for your knowledge. A bucket list for me is to catch the TT at some point. It must be nice to see so many of them living where you live! Cheers from Tx
Great video
I agree with everything you said and they have been seen in Ireland on a few occasions. and that's just the same stretch of water.
Love this
I find your channel interesting ,, thankyou ,
Thanks Catherine 🙌
We saw a shark off of Porthleven cornwall, I was on a cliff top looking down during my lunch break when it swam fast in to water about 3m deep turned then shoot off back to the deeper water. Looked the same shape as a bull shark, it was about 6 to 7 feet. I was swimming in the same spot the day before and I went in a day or two after but I was nervous. So happy to see these gorgeous creatures in real life, I have no idea what it was but it was big and majestic. The first shark I have ever seen! Whish I got a photo.
Defo not a bull shark
Very good video, I was over at Pettycur Bay beach on the Firth of Forth 2 years ago during the summer and we found a Seal which looked like it was bitten in half. We put it down to Orcas but maybe it was a shark
Cheers John, might have been a mako or other shark probably a Blue
@@AirbornePirates Cheers, We never even thought about sharks until I watched your video. Looking forward to watching more
@@johnwallace2684 I was out on a boat today and saw atleast 50 Atlantic grey seals
I saw multiple seals/sea lions about a group of 4 in Dorset Poole (Hamworthy Park waters) that was summer last year and I knew that couldn't be right I've never seen them flop onto shore/heard of such thing in that area. Seemed very odd, but it further confirms your/other people's theories that there must be predators in the water for them to be washing up on shores they never would have previously.
Ontop of that , the summer is prime time for them to come out , the temp is bearable for them and they must be intelligent enough to know the cycle of when the beaches are flooded in summer, packed full of people that's there opertunity to get more food than they would ever hope.
The reason we don’t get many off the coast of Ireland and the UK is due to our Sunrise and Sunset times in summer, it is only during our Spring and Autumns for a short time that our Sunrise and Sunset times will suit them, and during those times they have better places to be.
They hunt at Sunrise and Sunset….
Very interesting 👌🏻👍🏻!!!
I stay in Irvine,Scotland,Right on the west coast,My dad who is 75 now use to be a very good canoeist,Irvine water sports club was where he was nearly every day back in the late 60s,all through the 70s,He knew his marine animals like the back of his hand,To this day,He has always said there’s white sharks in our waters,
It's an ocean of course there are sharks there...always have been. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they aren't there. And other sealife too!
They swim into our water occasionally, this definitely isn’t a big cat mystery
The Orcas keep them away from these waters
July and August you will get big blues and hammerheads with the gulfstream warmer waters, makos are similar lookin to great whites and they swim near UK shores.
Absolutely! I’d be amazed if any of them came close enough to me, but I’ll give it a go
Idk why but when the weights of these sharks are in kilograms i understand just how heavy they are a lot better, i mean 180kg is the same weight as my old fzs600 yamaha fazer, it just blows my mind when put like that, im just trying to imagine pulling a 600cc bike up from the bottom and i know fully well from moving bikes around like that and working on them you straight up cannot fight that sort of weight. Anyway, fantastic channel and ill definately be waiting for more on this series
It's like.. do aliens exist??..but in reality..cant see why not we have whites in our waters. Great video. Interesting
I think it’s safe to assume great whites do hang out off the UK from time to time but obviously not very much.
Nah
About 8 years ago i was working on a camping near Loop Head in Ireland. Hot summer day, calm sea. We decided to get in and had a lovely swim. Next day the owner of the camping told us that a great white has been spotted near where we swam... Simple Dutch guys we were didnt even thought about it for a second. I wasnt really affraid, and had a swim the next day again, and i'll dive in any sea when i can, but i was suprised that a great white could make it up there.
I followed the tracking for Lydia. :)
I see seals and shark fins fishing off beach in and around Eastbourne fairly often couldn't say what sort though but significant size judging by fins i see. I dont know where the seals live but they kinda sweet they hang around just watching me fish for ages sometimes.
