- How I replaced the drum rollers on my Whirlpool dryer. If your dryer is making a loud knocking sound, it is likely that your drum rollers need to be replaced. It's a fairly simple fix with just a few basic tools. Here's a quick video with the detailed repair.

Thank you!!! I fixed my clothes dryer following your instructions step by step and it is fixed and running GREAT!! And I'm a woman!! Thank you for the super user-friendly instruction!!!
I just followed the steps in this video and fixed my own dryer.
Thanks!
As a 20 something female, my mother didnt want to let me rip the back off her hoover twin tub when it wasn't working. I had watched my dad as a kid and changed a belt in my own. I snapped at her i knew what i was doing and could at least identify if dad needed to buy a belt on the way home, or hook the belt back on if possible. She was unreasonably impressed, but i spoiled the i told u so moment struggling to get the little protective square around the power cord to sit in the right spot and left the back off as dad was going to have to look at it anyway, the problem was not one i could identify. Thanks for showing me dryers are also very simple. I had no idea.
Thanks for watching and sharing your story.
I repaired appliances before retiring and the only thing I fault with this video is the greasing of the replacement rollers. The roller bearings should not be greased as they are oil-light, which means they are porous, allowing oil to fill space in the bearing and lubricate the roller shaft.
THANK YOU for this. This explains a lot! The first time I had my dryer open (for something else) I saw those rollers and assumed they must be somehow self-lubricating, because realistically, that drum is expected to run for years without service. Putting grease on there might plug up the pores in the bearings, so yes, no grease.
Thank you for your tutorial. I just did this repair by following along. I only had a couple of minor issues along the way. I had a hard time getting the triangular holding brackets onto the post properly and when I was trying to put the front back on the little clip things for the screw hole kept falling of and I would have to backtrack a few steps to fish them out from under the drum. All in all the repair took about an hour and my dryer works perfectly again. Thank you so much for this video!
Glad it helped. I believe that I also had a little trouble with the triangle pieces as well :-) Thanks for watching.
Your video couldn't have been more helpful. Once I heard the noise the dryer in your video was making, I knew that my dryer had a similar problem. I raced to a nearby appliance parts store and purchased a full replacement kit for $44. I installed the kit and had everything back in place within an hour or so. Given that my dryer is from 1999, it would not have made sense to pour $250 or more into having a serviceman repair my machine. So, thanks for your great video! Jeff
Glad it helped! I love hearing that a am putting high priced repair people out of work.
Priceless video dude!!! My dryer was identical! Hurray for the simplicity of a simple machine without a “control panel” costing as much as a new dryer!!
I can't believe how many people have this same issue. I had no idea it would get this many views. Thanks for the feedback.
By the way, it's a perfect video. You can hear it, you have a friendly and enrolling demeanor, it's got a good pace, you can see everything, you know the pitfalls, and you even showed the cleanup! (Seeing what you did, I grabbed a vacuum cleaner and vacuumed up all the lint before starting!) I've got the parts in hand from Amazon and will be fixing my clunking monster very soon! In the meanwhile, I used some duct tape to hold the rubber in place on the drum rollers. It made it a little quieter too. It's a good stop gap solution! Thanks again! @@AlleyPicked
Thanks for the video. Just took my Maytag apart using your directions and discovered my problem is exactly what you discovered. Two warn out rollers. Easy fix! Many thanks!
Thanks for posting this video! I used this as a guide to fix my dryer (for the first time) and it ended up I needed to replace one of the wheels. Now it's running smooth like new!
My dryer was making that exact noise! I was so scared to get someone to fix it because of what it'll cost me. It finally just stopped. I replaced the rollers, tensioner and the belt (package). DONE!!!! It's back up and running! Thank you! Thank you!!!
So glad to hear it! Appliance mechanics must hate this video. I have heard this same story from many people.
I just replaced the wheel and belt on my Whirlpool today using just this video. Gracias, amigo!
I had a slightly bent bottom wheel that caused the barrel to los a bit of its seal. Also caused the bottom wheel to wear down its rubber and causing that awful noise.
This video tutorial saved me money, and I appreciate you my man!
Glad I could help. Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you sir! My Father & I were able to fix our dryer thanks to this video
We spent a long time searching for those screws under the lint tray
:-) Glad it worked out.
Awesome job. Thank you so much. I followed all your steps. So now I don’t have tennis shoes thrown around in my dryer anymore. Awesome video
Glad I could help!
Awesome! Nice to see that simple repairs don’t have to be intimidating. What a money saver. 👍🏼
Thank you so much, I love learning how to fix things like this. I didn’t have the money to buy a new dryer or hire a repairman and this got my dryer working perfectly.
Glad to hear!
Great video and demonstration! I was able to fix my dryer and save money! Anyone can do it! 😊
Thanks a lot for your video, short and sweet and strait to the point. Had the same problem with my dryer and I've fixed it myself. You just saved me money. Thanks again!
Glad it helped.
I just started this process and its just as you said a better way to go ans save money. Thank you for such an easy to understand video 💯
Wow! This video is so informative and the step-by-step instruction is efficient and on point. I've never fixed a dryer before and I certainly find this vid easy to understand, esp I get to learn the structure of a drying. Nice work! Thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful!
you are the best i am going to fix my one.
I fixed it and your video saved the day! Thanks! Very to the point and easy to follow. The washer thing was a tad hard to get off and I sliced my finger pretty bad but other than that, it was smooth sailing!
Ouch! Yea, that is always the most difficult part. Beats buying a new dryer of calling a repair person for $250
Use gloves next time ,that happened to me too.
Great video. Concise and fast. I bought the package of two wheels (came with four trianglar clips); new belt and idler pully for $61.00 plus shipping. Took me about an hour from the time I removed the top and front and installation.
Excellent!
Thanks for the quick informative video! I just completed this repair tonight! You’re right the grommets from the old wheels were hard to get off and back on the new wheels. And to the hardest part to boot was on the last fn screw the @husky ratchet screw driver broke off its socket and fell down the lint trap! We had to use some ingenuity and take out the drum, secure the lid and flip the dryer over and let gravity do the trick! But all put back together and no more rumble thanks to you, definitely a new sub for the great video!
Glad it helped. I still am surprised how many people have the same issue I had. Seems that these wheels are made to support the dryer repair industry...or maybe they think people will just scrap the old dryer and buy a new one. Sad either way. Thanks for subscribing.
Thank you for sharing this knowledge. I fixed our dryer with your help.
Thanks. I watched this vid & the drum rollers are definitely the problem. Thanks.
nice job, very helpful. RUclips to the rescue, again
It’s easy !!! way easier than I thought, the most difficult part for me was all the hair stuck on the the rollers other than that maybe the triangle retainers getting stuck on the the indent closest to the out side when it has to go on the inside indent. Easy job, not my first wrenching experience but pretty straightforward for the average person. Spend the 30 bucks and if you don’t have the tools go down to autozone and pick up a 15 dollar set and one packet of grease at the counter and you’ll be good to go!!!
Yup… getting that wrapped up hair removed so I could get the triangle washers was the only part that gave me a bit of trouble
My noise turned out to be a nail that worked its way into the cloth seal. Thanks for the education!
pretty much same problem I got.
tryna do this soon, thanks!
Gonna try this out after I figure out what make and model my dryer is, it's real old! Replaced the washer not too long ago and I am not trying to do the same with the dryer when it's just noise!
Good thing i found this video. I have the exact same mode and i previously took mine apart but didnt have time to mess with it so i just cleaned it and closed it up. But this is going to save big money because the wifey was already talking about buying a new one, her solution to everything lol.
My wife too...but I think she knows better now.
Your video was great and gave me the info I needed; and since my last name is "Alley", I knew I picked the right one!
I like your style Mr Alley! I should change my last name to Alley for the double pun.
Awesome, and thank you!
Thanks for the instructioninal video. My dryer is different looking, but I am sure the mechanism is very similar.
I will be making an honest attempt to repairing mine this weekend.
Wish me luck.😂
Good luck!
Really well done video: concise, clear and smart. Thanks.
Just did this. Be sure to check the seal of the drum for loose screws
Thank you for the video, I fixed the my Maytag noisy dryer by replacing the 2 idle pulleys as you directed step by step, so cool.
Great video. You saved me a lot of money. Thanks!
excellent very helpful
Thanks for useful info !
Amazing video thank you 😊 you saved me $500 bucks of buying a new one.
I only charge $200 :-)
I just repaired my dryer... Thanks for the video
Excellent! I've had a lot of people tell me that. Perhaps the appliance repair guy is mad at me :-)
Thanks for this. Probably saved me a ton of money and it felt good fixing something myself! Very helpful video!
Glad it helped!
Ty so much Blessings to you & your Family
Great job, Tom. Say "Hi" to Woodrow.
Great Video Thanks for sharing, will atempt this weekend !
Thanks for your very informative video
Great ,thank you
Very informative and accurate
Thank you so much for this video, you saved us a lot of money !
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much for the amazing stop on video! I followed exactly what you said and cleaned everything up and it’s good as new :)
Glad it helped!
My dyer is creating a loud vibrating sound but only when it's going one way, ie if it's clockwise but then anti clock wise no sound at all. Any idea? I recently replaced the thermostat and it has been doing this since. The dryer is outside of the house so the noise isn't a problem per se but don't want to cause further damage
What about if you replace the rollers and belt and there's *still* a low cyclic noise? Not as bad as before, but it makes me wonder if I missed something, or did something wrong. It's a Whirlpool roper RED4440VQ1 electric dryer.
Thank you sir! You saved me a lot of money lol
You should not use Grease on the rollers, the grease will attract lint/dust/hair etc & cause the rollers to lock again..Use dry lube such as graphite or silicone that is Temp resistant as well..(High Temp) or simple use nothing at all......I use a Drop of 3 in one, All temp silicone...FYI...Liked the video as well
Thanks for the tips!
The video was made well and very informative. However, IMO, 2 things were left out because this happened to me. When removing the 2 screws where the lint filter is, slow down and take extra care to keep hold of these screws to not drop them down that filter shoot. If this happens you have lost the screw or more work, taking more apart to get it back. And 2, there are sharp edges that can cut you. Be careful or wear gloves.
Thanks for the extra tips:-)
Thank You 👍🏼
Replaced belt, entire upper shroud with plates, rear drum bearing and support, lower felt, and entire motor assembly. It’s humming extremely loud and still making thumping noises. The dryer has no wheels and the blower fan is fine. The only thing I didn’t change was the tensioner arm and pulley which shows no signs of issue. I’m completely lost at this point 🤷🏼♂️
Is it possible that your belt is the wrong size? One time I ordered from Amazon and they gave me a belt that was about 1 inch smaller that it was supposed to be. This causes the tensioner arm to rub against the drum.
Thank you so much Sir ❤
What if all parts are replaced and still makes the same noise? Could it be the front drum felt seal or the plastic support ring bearing? Or both? There’s resistance when spinning the drum manually.
Make sure the motor spins freely as well as the tension arm.
Very good video, thank you!!
Thank you so much for the video!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank You
I'm pretty sure my dryer's problem is exactly what's in your video, but the little plastic electrical connector is keeping me from moving forward! It won't unclip as easily as you did it. I've been trying to disconnect it for the last 20 mins and I'm about to throw the whole dryer away!
One of mine was very difficult to remove as well. I remember getting aggravated too.
Just finished this, and it was the prob 👍
I had no idea this problem was so common when I posted the video. Glad it helped.
@@AlleyPicked just glad you did, mine was making the exact same noise so I was like, that has, to be it then, couple rollers off Amazon, done
Gracias amigo. Saludos desde Ecuador
I'm not so sure about auto grease in a heated compartment - fire hazard, and its potential to have lint, etc accumulate into it too, defeating the purpose of the grease.
I'll go with dry graphite lubricant myself.
You may be right. I'm not an appliance repairman...I just play one on RUclips :-) Thanks for the suggestion.
Thank you 💪🤓
You're welcome!
In Richmond, VA ...it costs over $350 with a leading repair company... but you'll never do it again or this 1 time either... It's up to you...
You may not be handy and may never see this video...
amazing thanks
We have a condenser tumble dryer and the foam strips have fell off condenser box, is this a problem and what are they for???
I have the same exact dryer. Do I just ask for drum rollers for whirlpool?
I believe I just went to amazon and searched for drum rollers and the model.
so what exactly was making the knocking noise??
Good video! My brother had bad rollers on his dryer for quite some time but continued using anyway. Now after telling me I just tried fixing it and noticed black particles from the rollers you mentioned are actually stuck or melted into the groove on the drum right where the rollers touch. Now after replacing rollers, idler pulley, and belt it still makes a lot of noise. Do you think those particles stuck to the drum are causing problems for the new rollers? I don't know how to remove it. I hope he doesn't need a new drum.
Any stuck particles should be removed, Scrape them off without scratching up the drum. If the particles are really stuck, you can soften them using a hair dryer. When you put everything together, it should turn freely. If you turn the drum by hand, it should feel smooth.
Is it possible that if there’s issues with the wheels that it may cause a burning smell? When I run the dryer and gives off a faint burning smell plus the knocking noise is just like yours in the video. My daughter and I are trying to do this together. Thank you for your help.
Yes, If the wheels are not turning properly, the rubber on the wheels which turn the large round drum have excess friction which can give off the burning smell.
Does anybody know how to get the right rollers? Okay look up a part number and I'm having trouble. Does it matter?
Usually you can search your dryer model number on Amazon and find the parts. The rollers are pretty standard.
This is a great, simple video - really appreciative. About to fix my dryer, and going to order new rollers as I'm 90% sure that's the issue. Can you help with that grommet circle thing? I have a bad track record with fragile metal bits and expect I'll break them too. Do you know what that part was and can you post a link? Imagine it's a set and it wouldn't hurt to have one too (plus it's a good excuse to give myself more tools!)
I think this is a similar one... good luck

Are drum turning but wheel loose
You would need to take it apart to check. Good chance the wheels as described in this video are the problem.
3:06 I also did this
Great video!!! Did you put a new belt?
Not this time. The belt was fine.
Omg thank you for saving me $$$$$
Glad to help!
Ok my daughter and I just changed the rollers and the belt. We could not get the retainer rings on new rollers. Still sounds a little rough. Any suggestions?
If you were not able to install the retaining rings/clips, that may account for the rattling. They really need to be in place to keep the wheels from wobbling.
@@AlleyPicked thanks so much for your response!!! It’s a shame they don’t automatically come installed on the replacements.
Is the roller on the right hand side supposed to have any play on the shaft? Say about 1/2-3/4 of an inch?
There is no play on the shaft at all.
yes. the right side roller is supposed to be able to move in and out that far.
Drum turning but it banging and clothes are getting stuck
Where do I find the model# of my dryer so I can order the parts?
Yours may be different...but mine was just inside the door. When I opened the door, I can see it on the dryer.
What if your dryer start off with a thump with squeaking noises?
It still might be those roller wheels. It will need to come apart to find out.
If it looks good... Let's replace it anyway. "I like it"
I purchased my replacement kit and the wheels don't spin like they do on the machine. Are they supposed to spin coming out of the package or are they all one piece essentially? Does anyone know?
They are one piece. They don't use bearings but rather spin on the post. I do use some grease, but that's it.
Thank you very much!
@@AlleyPicked hey I've got one more question for you! He fixed the wheels and actually had to replace the connector because the door jam wasn't connecting and now my heating element won't work. Is there something he wired wrong cuz it was working before we fixed the wheels.
How are the rollers holding up after one year??
Still rolling along :-)
I did everything and it still makes noise...now what?
most of the time I just clean the old wheels an they last just as long as the new wheels 🤔🤔🤔
Can you provide the link of the parts you ordered?
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QMRMVCF/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=AP6FRWXURLNZL&psc=1
Awesome thank you!!
So you say your going to go over all the reasons. You went over 1.
Did you inspect everything I showed in the video and still have a problem or are you just picking on the video? I mentioned to inspect the drum gasket, the motor, the belt tensioner, and the belt. If one of these are broken, it can cause a noise and malfunction.
why don't they just put seal bearing in the drum rollers... because then they will not make extra money
The shaft bearings are usually not what fails. The rubber surfaces themselves wear out and start to get lumpy and "un-round", as he noted with all the black powder dumping on the bottom of the dryer.
My dryer looks nothing like this you have to remove the whole drum and front and top. And my drum is screwed on it's a bitch
WHY DONT YOU SHOW HOW THE HELL THE DOOR GOES BACK ON AT THE BOTTOM?,!!
I'm here sweating my ass off trying to figure out if the front panel rest on top of that lip that's attached to the bottom of the dry that sticks out or if it tucks underneath. You completely edit the video and don't show it up close other than that could help with stuff
you should grease the tensioner pulley axle and the front roller axles too
Thanks for the very helpful video. My dryer sounded *exactly* like your dryer at the beginning of your video. After I took my dryer apart, and cleaned everything, I couldn't see that anything was obviously wrong. So, I put it all back together, and the ugly noise was gone - no replacement parts needed! : )
Yep, lazy wife overloaded mine and it slipped off one of the rear wheels
Thank you!
Ty Sir! Huge help! All the best to you and your family
