Would you buy a PlayStation 5 _day one_ if it's fully backwards compatible?
If it was fully backwards compatible, I'd buy it to play some of my favorite PlayStation 2 games ever in 4K like Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil, and continue playing through my PS4/ PS VR backlog. (And playing the newest PS5 games too of course. 😉)

Imagine the possibilities? If it’s backwards compatible at a low price they could bring back some physical copies of the greatest hits from the ps1 or ps2 eras. I’d pay 10-15$ for metal gear solid for the ps1.
Backwards compatible with original physical media would be killer - offer tons of emulator-like options for PS1/2/3 - couple that with the remote play iOS app, that would be amazing!
I think that with the fairly new system of online gaming and downloading games, that it would be a wise decision to make their new system, not backwards compatible, but with the ability to download previous games without any extra software or subscriptions other than the new console itself. Not only that, but to then allow them to return their previous console, and their disc counterparts to Sony, for a compatible, downloadable, equal, enhanced version made for the PS5 system itself. That would allow consumers to return their previous products for a "one system to rule them all", without people feeling like they have to buy any duplicate products. Then they would not only have the nostalgic past in the present, and futuristic marketing opportunity, but also allows a recycling market strategy opportunity for Sony as well. So people would feel better investing in a more expensive product, Sony could save and make alot more money, and more of a relationship, or bond, can be formed between the consumer and the company. And there is another marketing aspect I wouldn't think they'd want to miss. Family, and connection , which is what I thing the world wants anyways. It would be a win, win, all around. ("YouMeUS") could be a slogan, and trademark. And the US, in an advertisement, could transition to where the U and the S, form the PS5 symbol(trademark).
Id be playing those great PS2 era RPGs like radiata stories, dark alliance and star ocean
Every PS1 and PS2 game enhanced with AI machine learning + the option for higher resolution or performance on all PS5 games.
Make standard PS5 controllers fully modular like Astro c40 , even different types of buttons and trigger accessories.
Pack In launch title or playable compilation demos. I miss pack ins and Sony started with Playstation Picks Included with PS1.
What about PSP games and PS Vita games? I really think they should try the mobile console market again

About BC, well IMO most of the PS games that i consider that are important, have been already remastered. So from my perspective i think that there's not much left.

Considering building Ryzen/RDNA would take next to no investment from Sony, and it would add 10's of thousands of games they could sell through the PS Store and PS Now, Sony would be leaving $Billions in free profits by not offering this. Not to mention the massive draw it would offer for both PlayStation Now and PlayStation 5 over the rest of the Streaming and Hardware based offerings. This is a win in every way for Sony and Gamers. If Jim Ryan is not making this happen, then someone that can needs to replace him ASAP.
Sony is also moving over to Microsoft’s Azure platform for game streaming services, so I really wouldn’t worry about it’s Gaiki or however you spell it, investment.

counterpoint: why would you go out and spend money on a physical game when using a streaming service would be more convenient and cheaper?
Because then you actually own the game and not just a license to play it. A license that can be revoked at
any point without refund given. Also in the event that your PSN account gets compromised or suspended you won't have to go out and rebuy all of your games, just popped a disc back in create a new account and off you go.

also, i've got no particular reason to think i'm at risk of sony randomly taking away game licenses, being banned from PSN, or getting hacked. i'm sure those things COULD happen, but statistically, i'm probably as safe from that stuff as i am from damaging a disc irreparably.
I used to think the same thing, until I lost the license to several games on the PlayStation Network and I can never "officially" play them again.
Gaming, like any other medium of entertainment is a form of art; one that the majority of "AAA" publishers couldn't care less about once the money stops hitting their bottom line. As such, whether the game exists or not is irrelevant to them, but matters to the people that bought the game. Should you choose to stream games then that's great, but do not pretend like there are 0 ramifications when it comes to consumer protection and rights as of the making of this comment. The potential problems outweigh the benefits.

Megat Afiq OMG 🤦🏾♂️ I’m tired of seeing this shit everywhere everytime I talk about this topic so I’m not going to dive deep into it I’ll just say a few things. Building and designing a current gen phone cost about 500 dollars average for iPhones 600 plus manufacturing goes up 100-200 average phone that’s good cost about 800. Much more than a console because it cost more to make. Sony launches consoles on a loss because they earn that money back through subscriptions. Phones don’t. When you get your phone that’s it. Yeah there’s subscriptions within the phone you can pay for but they don’t earn as much as Sony and Microsoft meaning if they want to make a profit they have to price there phones a bit above what they cost to make aka 800-1000 dollars. ALSO if consoles cost the same as phones you get your consoles it’s COMPLETELY USELESS. Besides playing Netflix and a ton of other stuff that’s free outside of the box. You have to pay for games services like ps+ that make your console add up in price a ton and by about 3 years owning your console it will be more expensive then the phone that you pay monthly for and averagely cost 800 dollars but you said 1000 so let’s do the math. 400 dollar console 5 games a year. That’s 300 dollars plus a full year of ps+ 60 dollars that’s 760 dollars in a year. By next year it will be at 1000 meaning 3 years down the line your well over the price of a phone. (Unless you’re one of those crazy rich people who upgrade phones every year) phones also last many many years. I used my iPhone 5 until 2018 about 3-4 years and got a iPhone 8 that cost 800. Anyways I hope I got my point across. I dived a bit too deep.
