Just as the Howrah Bridge was finished, the British were shipping all the food they could get out of Bengal to feed British troops in WW2, at Churchill's order. While there was no reduction in Bengal's food production that year, this explicit policy of the British directly caused the Bengal Famine of 1943 that killed three million Indians! That is about half the number of Jews killed in the Holocaust. Seeing the Victoria Monument still standing in Kolkata like that makes me think it's a bit like a monument to Hitler in Warsaw.
actually 4.3 to 5 million people died in that famine. ships with tons of grains from Australia came to Kolkata for relief but British government ordered them to go from there and those ships eventually went to Canada. British carefully planned and executed one famine after other in India during their rule costed up to 200 million lives. another major famine in Bengal in 1769 to 1770 where they killed over 10 million people in Bengal 40% of then population.

@@TheKingOfBeans As its monarch when the British government annexed it in 1858 and as its so-called "Empress" from 1876, Victoria is a symbol of the regime that stripped India of human and material resources. Churchill was the architect of both the 1943 famine and backed Partition which led to untold bloodshed. The two of them bookend the 90 years of the Raj.

Victoria Memorial is the biggest sign of oppression in Kolkata. between 100 million to 200 million people died in British induced famines over the years in India. there was an untold holocaust which caused the deaths of almost 10 million people over 10 years beginning in 1857, after the first independence movement of India. at least 100k people were killed in Delhi. total population including small children of many small towns and villages which took part in the movement were eliminated. many forests were completely burnt including tribal people inside it. unfortunately Brits were the ones who have written Indian history. so these things are very much hidden.

Hi Gabriel, India is just incredibly busy it is just bursting at the seams this is so much of what you experienced the last time you were in India. There aren't many places in the world where you can witness this kind of commerce but in India's largest cities, you can still see it. It's a country with incredible growth the future of India is an intense path that looks to continue for an extended period.

its growth, in terms of jobs, has been quite underwhelming relative to its population boom.
India has had potential for decades but it's only very few who profit. Unfortunately it's a very tough life for almost everyone especially males. There are 36 million more men than women in the country.

Funny, I was thinking of recommending that experience to you. I walked across the bridge (to the train station) and back 6 or 7 years ago. Did the flower market walk on the way back. Doesn’t get much more real/colourful than that. Beautiful chaos, indeed.

The sitar is an amazing instrument and from what I have been told, equally amazingly hard to learn. The sound of it is always somehow a bit haunting in a way.
Interesting fact - the clock on the Kolkata GPO was manufactured by the same London co. that made the 'Big Ben'...Eden Gardens is a park area ( built during the British period) that also has the Eden Garden Stadium ( mostly for Cricket as it houses the BCCI, the Indian Cricket authority)...

@@carlsontravelsandwildlife in fact, Kolkata, as a historic mega city, should get the UNESCO Heritage tag. For the life of me, I don't know why that has not happened. Politics I guess. The Hindu 'Durga Puja' festival, which is celebrated in autumn( Sep - Oct) has got the UNESCO world culture heritage tag ...it's considered as colorful and fascinating ( or even more) than the Carnivals of Central and South America!

There is a huge garden just beside the Eden Gardens stadium which is the garden you are looking for and that's called the Eden Garden as in the garden. That garden is a recreational park, the one that you were searching for. This Stadium was built in the garden area hence the name.

there is also a garden called Eden Garden close to the Eden Gardens stadium. by the way that's the most iconic cricket stadium in India and Asia. once it could host 100000 people or more now only 67000 capacity.

Hey Gabe you probably know this but the word garden stems from the Latin word which means “open space.” Hence the reason for many stadiums including Madison square and boston garden ending with the word. Of course an honest mistake I would have thought the same thing! Lol Btw the Victoria memorial hall with the palace was absolutely beautiful man!
Loving this series, the music is very soothing, park street is my favourite area of kolkata, victoria memorial is a great place, they have changed the interior, previously it was much better with many historical items from the british era, weapons and many other stuffs, now they have removed them all, not sure why
Because remembering Netaji is far more important to us than remembering Victoria..

Welcome to my hometown Mr Gabriel,i have been your fan since your cycle trips in rajasthan last time.
The area from which you walked through is Burra Bazar and you can call it as a very commercial area of the city and the area of the cruch is where the colonial history still is present as there are important government offices in those buildings. The stadium which you went is one of the most iconic and the largest cricket stadiums in this world and just opposite to that road are 2 football clubs that are regarded as one of the most legendary clubs in history of Indian football East Bengal and Mohon Bagan. Btw, there is actually a garden named Eden Gardens just on that road to the stadium and you may have left it behind as the small gate there is small.
The movie Lion was filmed here, on this bridge, it's a fascinating story.

Kolkata was the capital of India ( British India) for almost 150 years.
yesterday was the marriage date according to Hindu ritual Panjika( book) to decorate the house and stage by flowers in the marriage ceremony . Another thing is that the yellow color marry gold flower is used in daily puja and it is long lasting.

i love your inia videos, gabriel. you should spend more time in calcutta. you might also try patna, capital of bihar. not much traveled by foreigners. it is one of the oldest continuosly inhabied cities in the world. i got the impression that it is a rough and gritty city. it is on the ganges and has, i believe the world's longest bridge. happy journey!

You could cross over to Howrah & then take a river ferry back to Kolkata. The ferry ghat (jetty) is not far from bridge. That way you get a nice round trip over the river

That's Howrah Flower market where people from both the city Kolkata and Howrah come to buy flower for wholesale or retail price..I live 40-45 minutes away from this place..used to go to office every day crossing The Howrah bridge..burrabazaar area.. A word about paneer: Unless it is fresh, the cheese is not good. Such has been my experience eating it. And, India is not known for its adherence to hygiene and refrigeration.
Question: We're you able to heat up colder food in a microwave? I do not like food which is not piping hot.

Hi Gabe, just a suggestion why don't you take best 15 seconds of your videos and post them in RUclips Shorts? like from part 1 your reaction when u saw the flower market was amazing and it deserved a shorts. Shorts videos move quickly and have a good chances to get more traction to the channel.
I'll have to get into it at some point, but the thing is that shorts have to be filmed in vertical style and my videos are filmed horizontally. So I would need to make some clips with my phone filmed vertically, but the video quality that my phone shoots is terrible. Time for a new phone.

NO!! That's Neetaji Indoor stadium and eden garden is right beside it. This stadium was built for the 33rd World Table Tennis Championship, saw them building it it from scratch!. I'll tell you the history as I have traveled India way before you did. LOL!!

Eden gardens is a cricket stadium..
during their rule in India, British engineered famines one after the other as they thought Indians would not be able to fight for their Independence in those situations. dying in famine is the worst form of death where one want to to die quickly but one dies little by little. here are numbers of the deaths in some major artificial famines caused by the British in India-

India is so beautiful, the people - the colours the architecture, the brits might of made some enemies there, but they built the best railway system in the world at that time during there influence, some amazing buildings, all of which still stand today and the railway system still running, India is a place that is wonderful to visit, I love being there when I can ❤️🙏

@@vsr3777 yes the British empire was who benefited, it was certainly not the common man from the streets of the UK, it was the lords and ladies, the elite, the aristocracy that benefitted, already wealthy businessman, they benefitted, not the poor working class people, the UK today still like India have a rich and poor society, people asking for free food like they do right across India on a daily basis, I have witnessed that many times in many major city’s and towns across India, the villages too, we (us), the common man my friend, we are brothers in being poor, sadly that is how it is, US & THEM, but make no mistake, the British that come to India now, love the country, the people etc, we are not coming for any other reason than to enjoy your culture.
