Honestly, felt a tinge of sadness to learn James is leaving Singapore, but I guess if you want to explore the world, then it is good that you do it when you’re young, cause once time passes , you certainly can’t turn back the clock. Wishing James all the best in his future endeavours.
I, as a Japanese, am worried that James will be disappointed in Japan🥺 Food is nice, but working in Japan is sometimes not so good. I hope he'll make nice friends there and enjoy his life.
James, if you havent already bought your ticket to Alaska, don't. I did that when I was in college. If your plan is to make money, save, and go back to Japan your going to be disappointed. The cost to get to Alaska, buy camping gear (I'm assuming you are going to live in a tent city) and then survive on decent food is expensive. Almost all fresh food is imported from "the lower 48" states. The cost can be more than double. The reason why the pay is so good isn't just because of the high cost of living but because of the dangerous conditions and the crappy weather. It's hard to attract anyone sane to do dangerous shitty work. Most of the tent cities are full of drug addicts, homeless, fugitives, and college kids. So if you are going to party, or you want to disappear, you can expect to do so there. Alaska attracts a lot of southerners too. Texans, etc. So expect a lot of racism. During this period of covid19 you should be much more cautious. Lastly, before I get into the positive stuff, there's a lot of competition for work. Most of the canneries don't pay much but the fishing companies, independent boats, docks do. Problem is that most of the small boat companies have crew returning from prior seasons. I would suggest you go to Alaska to travel and spend your money. It's beautiful there. Meet some native Alaskans/Tribal people. They are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. I had one of the best adventures of my life there. But i also almost died four times. Once before the fishing season I was too lazy to boil the water while hiking. It's called beaver fever for a reason. I had "the runs" for almost three weeks. Another time I was mock charged by a moose. And once I fell off a skiff and got hypothermia but the water was too rough to go back to shore right away. Always carry bear spray/preferably a gun( .44 magnum or larger), travel with two people and let people know where and when you're going and returning. Wear bear bells when you hike. Carry a lot of 1st aid and tampons to stop bleeding. And follow the rules at camp sites. When I went up in 1992 I was an idiot. I was going because I thought I got a girl pregnant and I needed to make a lot of money fast. It ended up that the kid wasn't mine...but that's another story. Anyway, at the end of the season I went hiking by myself. I had about $1,000 worth of gear which was a lot of money back then and I ended up at a camp ground near Denali Nat'l park. I cooked dinner, ate, but didn't store my food in a bear proof box or 50 meters away. Instead I kept it with me. That night I ended up spending the better part of the night freezing my ass off under a picnic table/bench watching a bear tear through my tent, pack, and down jacket, eat my left overs and other supplies. Even after the bear left I stayed under the table because it was dark and I was afraid the bear was still nearby. Even though I wasn't harmed physically, I consider this a near death experience. Boil all your drinking water. I got ghirardia because I thought the water was too cold for any bacteria to live in it. Carry some sterilizing tablets too. Otherwise you'll end up spending a lot of time running to the toilet or woods. Back then the doctors visits were onlyabout $200 plus meds. It's called flagl(sp?). Lastly, wild animals are not going to let you pet them. Even if they look friendly don't go up to them. Especially moose. Your money is better spent hiring a japanese exchange student tutor from Cheng Da or Tai Da and then going to Japan after you've saved more money. Alaska is really one of the most beautiful places youll ever visit. It would be a terrible shame to only spend time working. You could easily spend years there hiking, fishing, hunting, taking pictures of awesome scenery and most impotantly getting to know the Tribal people. Happy Travels. Stay Safe, Be Well, God Bless.
honestly, its good to explore the world while you're young, being able to take the first step and move to Japan is a good thing. Japan may not be sunshine and rainbows like they portray in shows and anime but It's good to be able to stay in a place where most of your interests lies.
Great point about traveling when your young!!! In reference to your sunshine and rainbows comment, please tell me what PLACE ON EARTH THAT IS ALL SUNSHINE AND RAINBOWS, because I will move there.
Taxes r high in Japan, it’s a homogeneous society which does not welcome foreigners like singapore does, 4 seasons means high expenditures on winter wears, his future generations will have problems speaking English if he settles in there. I have lived in Europe for a decade as a Singaporean, I know he will miss singapore when he realizes that reality bites
I was of the impression that James have been living/working in Singapore much longer than a year. Too bad that his memory of Singapore is mostly during the lockdowns of 2020. Wish you all the best.
I feel the same as James, that's why I moved to japan from sg. Although experience is really subjective, I have really high expectations for Japan, but I could say life here is even better than I've expected. Without knowing anyone in Tokyo, I have received tremendous help from many many people, especially during this pandemic, including financial/housing, etc. Through these amazing experiences, I felt like I should give back to society, so I joined the local community and volunteered at the fire station. This is something I have never thought of when I was in Singapore. I think as long as you respect the culture and are willing to adapt to it( like learning Keigo/礼儀作法 and the logic behind them), you will start to feel the inclusiveness of Japanese society. If you are an introvert Japan is probably the most relaxed place on earth.
Wow Ghib-San, what a lovely video.. love the humor, the friendship and how you and James are able to be so honest and raw with each other and with us. Great friendship :) thank you for sharing !
I'm in awe listening to James talked about going to Alaska to work in a fish cannery, using the money earned to study in Japan? I have so much respect for youngsters who knows what they want and worked hard to improve themselves.
Ghib, though you may miss your only Taiwanese friend seeking greener pastures in Hokkaido but, u have successfully make many new friends, be it locals, overseas or your Bangladesh bro in SG. Looking on the brighter note, u r going to settle down at your new home soon to begin your own family life. Shitakke to James. All the best to him. Chow chow...

I’m working in a Japanese. Company as a singaporean. I can say luckily my boss is more localised now haha. But what is the main different working in Japan than Singapore culture though? Keen to explain more?
All the best in your next chapter of life, James! Japan will be pretty different compared to Taiwan or Singapore, but then again, there’s no perfect country, so might as well enjoy the change. Stay safe in Alaska as well!
Most Taiwanese love Japan . I think we are very influenced by Japanese culture . Not long ago my grandma grandpa spoke Japanese as official language. However I found out to love Japan and really living there are very different. The real Japanese culture which makes me feel a bit hard to get used to. Especially friendship part. Very hard to really be their friends. Japanese still love to have their own Japanese circle. Unlike Taiwanese. Taiwanese is more open to everyone. Very friendly can be a scary too. Not all people can get used to super friendly Taiwanese. My Japanese friend was shocked when I showered her with lots of presents I brought back from Taiwan or even from Japan. Hokkaido is very cold in winter. Good luck! I think you will miss Sg sun a lot . I also learn Japanese too. When I was in Japan i could improve a lot in one week. In Singapore it’s like no way to use Japanese .
Better check the border restrictions before quitting the job. About a year ago, one of my ex-colleagues resigned in order to go to Japan for some study but then was blocked from entering Japan. She ended up changing her plan and started to look for a new job... Hopefully, all travel restrictions are lifted by that time.
We’re gonna miss James! Hope Japan’s borders will open this year for when James wants to move there. Best of luck and you guys should meet up in Japan in the future!
Japan is a cool place. To James, why don't you learn software development? It's pretty good career path and salary. TBH I would stay in Singapore to make money. You can invest in the stock market with no capital gains tax right?

Who will pay for the medical evacuation and subsequent medical and/or hospital treatments?
Wish u all the best James! Like your honest opinions👍👍👍 You are a cool, educated, grateful and well mannered young man and I m sure u will be successful wherever u go.
James, good that you know what you want in life: working in Alaska and then learning Japanese in Hokkaido. After spending 1.5 years in Singapore, my family and I are thinking of leaving too. Wish you the best of luck!
Sorry to hear u leaving Singapore, but I am sure u will enjoy exploring the World and living life the way u want to! Life is not just about getting comfortable and earn big money. U will have so many stories to tell in future
Ultimately, everyone has to return to their country because we all have commitments. In my case, I realized my parents are getting old and that they would need me to stay with them. I earn less but I work from home, plus I found a suitable, pollution free & healthy environment for my family. So I feel this is the best thing for me.
Good posting and all the best to James. Taiwan is also a beautiful country from my experience being there. And the Japanese host command of English deserves high appraisal. Well done!
Wow James it takes a lot of guts to disrupt what you are doing...and quite amazing decision and plan you are making. You gonna miss Singapore I am sure....but wish you all the best in your new endeavor and challenges. Have fun life is short.
Is it just me? I find a lot of Taiwanese wouldn’t stay long in Singapore. Used to have lots of Taiwanese friends as I backpack all across Taiwan (multiple times) and I have always asked them to come visit Singapore someday. Most came once and didn’t come back anymore... this was about 8-9 years back. Maybe some Taiwanese can advise why? I don’t think I am a bad host and in fact have made many friends bringing people around in Singapore and some even decided to stay for long term. Most of these Taiwanese friends ended up moving to US & Japan and eventually we stopped talking.

all the best James!
Goodbye and good luck to you, from Singapore.
Hi guys ☺️ Those who see this have a nice day !!
シティボーイのジェームスくんがアラスカの缶詰工場で働くですって!! アラスカリポートも楽しみです。日本でジブおじとジェームスくん再会の巻もいいですね。James 加油!
