- When I first approached Dr Chee Soon Juan, expressing my wish to film his family, he had his reservation and wasn't sure if this was something his wife, Dr Huang Chihmei and his 3 children were comfortable and would agree to. Chee describes his house as a ‘sanctuary’ and I was surprised that except for his mother or the very few close relatives, only a handful had stepped in there for the last 20 years or so.
What followed then were a few email exchanges and a meeting with Chihmei and eventually, they gave their consent.
On my first visit to meet their children, Chihmei apologised profusely for their small apartment, and that my cameraman Ching Leong and I had to sit on kiddish plastic chairs from Ikea. Though having read about them in a Yahoo article (sg.news.yahoo....) and an idea what to expect, my attention was still being drawn to the huge collection of books that occupied the living room. There are many photos around the house, and 3 designated study areas in the living room and 2 bedrooms. At her study table, An Lyn the eldest child and probably due to the lack of space, has to keep her personal items on the table and on the book shelves too. During our conversations, Chihmei kept wondering if we would like moving our filming outdoor.
Anyway, it’s just the cameraman and myself, and everything was kept minimal. The filming took 3 days and we spent most of our time in the ‘sanctuary’. At the end of the shoot, Chihmei said the family had never felt so important in their lives before. Shaw Hur, the youngest kid told me the exact hours we had spent filming them. He actually kept count! This boy is endearing and during our shoot, we even assigned him simple tasks to assist us. Ching Leong was so impressed that he told me not once that he was better than some junior crew or interns he encountered.
This video would hopefully offer a rare glimpse of the family of Chee Soon Juan. In all honesty, I merely had this simple notion of covering the family without exactly knowing what direction I am going to take. I am happy that they had allowed me to do my work without any interference. I didn't even reveal my interview questions until the camera started rolling.
In the end, what struck me most was how the family managed to stay so strong as a whole despite the crises they weathered. It’s so close-knit, and in one of the solo interviews, Shaw Hur cried when he spoke about having missed her sister when she was out for school camp. We had to stop filming and resumed an hour later. Anyway, this scene didn't end up in the final cut.
Our heartfelt thanks to the Chee family for allowing 2 strangers into your ‘sanctuary’ and also provided us the precious family pictures and footage. We learnt something from the time we had spent with you all. We hope Singaporeans will care to watch the video and make up their own opinions too.

I was working in Customer service had the chance once during my work and met Dr Chee in real and had a brief interaction with him. He was friendly and was just like another Singaporean, like you and me. Apart from politics, this video about his family, about the teaching of morals, values and time that we should have in the family is touching. How many families today are as closely knitted as them? for those who says this is a fake video, how do you get children to fake emotions? you can't, and even if this is released politically to paint a better image, it is as real as it is. How a real Singaporean family used to be in the past which I remember as.
Thank you for sharing this video, and best of luck Dr Chee. I hope that future policies makers think socially how it shapes the society's values and morales in tandem with economic gains.

I can't predict what change Dr Chee can bring if he gets elected but I am definitely willing to take the chance and give him my support. Kudos to the filmmaker and the wonders of the Internet to be able to portray a side of Dr Chee that many Singaporeans are not familiar with (no thanks to the suppression of media back in the past by the incumbent party to paint him as 'villain'). He has gone through a very dark and tough period and I hope he sees the rewards of his labour in the near future.

I'm with you. After watching the election broadcast by CNA and "IQ Face-to-Face with SDP's Chee Soon Juan" by Viswa Sadasivan and now this video, Dr Chee deserves a second chance. I too wish him well and successful in the coming Sep 11 election.
See for ourselves. Feel in our hearts. Storms could not tear down this family. Instead, they grew stronger, closer and blossomed in character. This family earns my respect!
You and your wife both are PhD holders, you could have better life as "talents" overseas, but you chose to stay in SG living in a 3 room HDB, after all the abuse and humiliation that were hurled at you. For that I salute you! And for that I can trust you more than the PAP cronies to stick through thick and thin with Singapore. I would prefer those who have a heart than those who have the brain to be the leader, because if you don't have enough brains you can still employ the experts to do the job; but if you have no heart (like those who say old people collect cardboxes only for body exercise) then you won't even care, then there is totally no hope at all.
Dr Chee is a great dad. If he can take care of his family, surely, he can take care of the people. Residents in Bukit Batok, please give Dr Chee a chance.

I admire Dr Huang for her tenacity, patience and grit. It is not an easy road she is walking. She is highly educated and came from a good family. She has options and she chose to stand by a man that has been demonised in Singapore's media and the ruling party. There must be good reasons.
i repeatedly watched this video more then three times "The Women behind the Man" she really touches my heart for her sacrifices and courageous to upholding her family despite the odds and challenges face her in life...She is a great mother, great wife and great daughter.. Over the years, I can see his sacrifice, perseverance and determination. My perception of him changed. Maybe he has also changed over these years. But his determination and persistence didn’t. He deserves a chance to serve. Hope BB gives you a chance to proof yourself. Go on CSJ.

The greatest sacrifice of all is his wife. I respect her for her unwavering love to her kids and husband.
What a brilliant family. I can see the love between the siblings and the strength in the mother as the guiding pillar to sustain the household while the husband is out fighting battles for his countrymen's aspirations. Regretful to have only watched this after 4 years but I will be sharing this across to my friends and family to show people the beautiful family behind what makes CSJ an incredible politician of his time.

I see some comments implying that CSJ has made mistakes and is still learning from life. Why such comments? Just because he went to jail? It's a pity that most of our people have been bought up with a very vague idea of the value of honesty, patience, righteousness, steadfastness, determination, persistence, sacrifice, fairness and bravery - which is what is so lacking in politicians these days. And Chee Soon Juan is about the only person right now in Singapore who still have such principles solidly lodged in him. I think that with his brains, experience and qualifications, he should have no problem making a decent living but he chose what he believed in. And what he had chosen are riches no one can buy. I am so proud of him. He is my role model.

I am not a key follower of opposition politics, but I must say the character and integrity of Dr Chee is highly moving and philosophically elevating. I have huge sympathy towards him and the unnecessary hardship the government has imposed upon him. Politics should never be this personal that it impacts a man's family. Yet I am impressed by the strength and galvanizing effect on his upstanding family.
Singapore's heavy-handed government has planted a rock in opposition politics, in an intellectual and moral champion. The things they have done to him has allowed him to earn his stripes in what he stands for. Bravo, Dr Chee.
Dr Huang is the kind of FT that Singaporean embraced, We welcome FT who are here to support Singaporean, bringing along the right set of character and moral values that strengthen Singapore core identity and moral fibre. What we disagree is the manner in which the FT floodgates is open in the name or guise of economic progress and development amid an absence of a integrated and well balanced approach.

Chee recent announcement that he is being voted in as MP he is willing to put aside 50% of the $16000 MP salary to a foundation to help the needy in his constituency. This is the type of MP that Sg needs!!!! Kudos to CSJ for displaying an unselfish gut to serve Singaporean.
During Dr. Chee's earlier part of his political career, I used to regard him as rather impetuous. I blamed him for dragging his sister into trouble. But Dr Chee has matured. And I learned from this video what a pillar of strength his wife Dr Huang Chih Mei, has been. She gave him all her support thru all the difficult years.
Imagine being bankrupted and having a family to take care of. I wish Dr Chee success in his political career. I also wish to express my admiration for his wife, Huang Chih Mei who had been a pillar of strength and together with Dr Chee's resolve they have overcome overwhelming obstacles in life.
Dr Chee is the person we need in the parliament
I grew up watching this man fight for what he believes in. He could have taken the easy way but he instead chose the long term plan. He has been consistent in his message through the years. His children are blessed to grow up with such parents.

A great man and his family. In the past, I did not liked him but I find that he has really mellowed down a lot. I was just too quick to judge. I owe him and his family too an apology because I had my opinion from MSM which painted half the picture. Now I felt that he was really trying hard not for the money but for Singapore and our future. Although I disagree with CSJ's approach to politics, it is really heartwarming to see that behind that political persona lies an ordinary man with an ordinary family. Kudos to the wife for being such an incredible mother, it must be really difficult to raise 3 kids given the unfortunate circumstances faced by CSJ throughout his political career.
Dr Chee has improved very much in his approach in presenting his case over the years in a more calmed down, persuasive manner. Thank you sincerely for putting much time and effort over the years.

A beautiful and touching story of a humble and happy family, warm and loving home. Supportive loving wife and three beautiful, awesome, talented and well brought up children. All should watch this as it will change the negative impression of the man through years of bad press and out of place and harsh persecution which included bankruptcy and imprisonment. Dr and Mrs Chee Soon Juan truly an extraordinary couple all ordinary Singaporeans should be proud of, if only they knew the depth of personal sacrifice, affliction and mental struggles they and their family of 3 young children had to endure through the years. Both the couple are highly educated with Doctorates should have brought them to a level of success and material rewards that many of his generation peers would have today. But they chose the path least trodden and a long and difficult journey all because they cared for Singapore and all Singaporeans.

The comments from his happy family is a testimony for Chee that he is capable of making people happy even with little material means. I admire the family values and it makes me aspire to have such a family. We should give him a chance.
Politics aside, you Sir are a true inspiration to me and many others. Having genuine passion in what you believe in, no matter how many people try and put you down, even though they are so called the "primes" of the country. I remember a quote from my alma matter, "age quod agis", which basically means do well in whatever you do. You left me with such aspiration and indent as it did. All the best for the upcoming GE!

Insightful video on the one of the most vilified (by mainstream media) political figures in Singapore. Yes, he made some mistakes in the past and paid a heavy price for it. But you have to admire his tenacity and courage to speak up when no one would. Above all, his loving wife and children keeps him grounded. Comforting to know that you don't need millions to be happy in this world, your family is already your wealth.

The man has been maturing over time. It had been a hard time for him and his family. He did admit that he learned a lot along the way. In human history, sadly, we only remember the victors but forgot the vanquished, who were similarly patriotic and had made perhaps even more sacrifices, including infamy.
Mr Chee, though I do not reside in the constituency where you stand for election, I wish you success. You are blessed with a very supportive spouse and your children are your treasures.

dr Chee remind me of lim guan yin, the current Penang chief minister. lgy was jailed because he defended a Malay girl that was raped by ex melaka chief minister. now he has become Penang chief minister and manage Penang well. I hope you guy should also give dr Chee a chance to serve you.

After all he had been through and after all the sacrifices he n his family has made, to be still fighting for wat he believes would make singapore better. With two doctrine combine, both he and his wife can easily pick an easy life by working in some multi national company and work his way up, or better still join pap and get pay by million dollars, but he choose the opposite for what he believe in fighting for democracy in sg. Dr. Chee and family has demonstrated the qualities that any human should seek and pursue - love, commitment, sacrifice, courage, resilience.
Some people have a very strong moral worth, so much so that they’re willing to give up all materialistic possessions to keep on fighting for what they believe. Even if some Singaporeans might not know how to appreciate you and your efforts, God is there watching over you and smiling at you Dr Chee.

It's a terrible waste of HR to marginalise such qualified doctorates in a small country like Singapore. It's our loss and stupidity not to provide the healthy and conducive environment for them to contribute. Sgp is not worthy of them. They could have just left and lectured in US but they choose to fight on in Sgp. Will Sgporeans be open minded and smart enough to give them a chance? If LHL accuse us of ruining Evan Lim's career, CSC's and wife's careers were certainly being ruined.
Just by looking at their family and values. He will inspire a lot of people if elected not in term of how he challenge the PAP but rather as a good model to a lot of us who really need their kind of family values, compassion and contentment. A family with courage, compassion and contentment. They warm our hearts. Unfortunately, the majority of BB voters have deprived themselves what really matter to life. Hang on Dr. Chee. I wish you and family all the best. You have already achieved a lot and you are so fortunate to have such strong and wonderful wife and children.

As a singaporean parent i felt very touched over this video. How u bring up ur children defines you as a good person, a good father and a good leader. A shout out to Dr Huang!- i am living far away from family in Singapore for over a decade. It is certainly not easy to live so far apart from love ones with not much help bringing up 3 children and minimial support in a small flat. It's just sheer love, determination and courage that you have! Thank you for the rare glimpse into your family's life, Dr Chee. I pray for you, your wife and your children! Do NOT EVER LOSE HOPE OK! God will reward you one day! I REALLY REALLY hope from the bottom of my heart that this 2020 will be YOUR YEAR to shine in winning Bt Batok SMC! And if you win next time, please help amend the voting system overseas now to enable easier voting for overseas singaporeans. Currently we can only vote in nearest polling stations eg UK for those living in europe. But it's crazy to travel at a time like this, we want to have our voices heard as well we love our country but we didnt vote for our government!

this video means so much, i just wanted to have a glimpse of dr chee's life but it reminded me so much of my life back with my family in our 3 bedroom flat in marine parade, life was tough and crowded with 3 siblings, but it was everything...
