- His farewell speech on his retirement match in 2001 was truly heartwarming and moved football fans all around the world, his "the ball doesn't get stained" quote is iconic.
Today Diego Armando Maradona, widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, unfortunately passed on because of a cardiac arrest after fighting with a series of diseases.
Argentinians, Boca fans, Napoli fans, and every football fan for that matter will remember him for not only his goals & skills but also what he stood for. As someone pointed out "I don't care about what he did with his life, I only care about what he did with mine.

This is probably the greatest speech by a sportsman in human history. What profound simplicity, what innocence, what passion from the bottom of the soul, what honesty in a voice. I am deeply proud that like millions of children around the world we in Bangladesh grew up seeing Maradona play. And with his death I start watching football again with the fondest memories of his greatness. "I paid for my mistakes but football remains unstained." The sheer humbleness in the voice of a child who was most happy when with a football. This speech like the person himself simply surpasses sports.

Whatever you might think about Diego and his demons, about all the drama and bullshit, about his horrendous taste in politics...what struck me the most about him were those sudden (and genuine!) outbursts of child-like tenderness, pure love for football and people (those who knew him all agree that he never held grudges for too long), i saw the new document about him, there's this great quote which i again remembered watching this video and which i think sums him and his life up nicely:
‘’When you’re on the pitch, life goes away. Problems go away. Everything goes away.’’
Funny how i'm from Central Europe and it still feels like he belongs to us as much as he belongs to his people in Argentina.

Diego’s words brought me to tears, he gone but not forgotten. He is a legend of football doesn’t matter where you come from everyone loved Diego. I’m not even from Argentina but my love for Diego is beyond words. I remember watching 1990 world cup as child and when Argentina lost to W Germany we felt so bad it was as if my own team lost. Since then I started to watch football because of Diego. Thank you Diego for all the wonderful memories you have given us over the years and now Argentina are world champions once again unfortunately you are not here to cherish it but you must be smiling down from heaven.
