I was horrifically depressed since childhood. It was relentless. I assumed it would ultimately end me somehow. About twelve years ago I randomly accepted the offer from a friend of a few doses of mushrooms. I did them two consecutive nights alone. First night was pretty mild. The second night? Wow. I saw my depression from every angle, realized much. Next day: depression totally gone. Never came back, never coming back. It's like it's a forest far away I can remember, and could probably find again with enough effort, but it has zero impact on anything in my life or mind. They honestly saved my life and improved it immensely. I never did them again, either. I wish there was a good, organized way to administer them to people who would benefit from them.

As a recovering sex addict, I can relate to everything James is talking about. My addiction didn’t involve hooking up with other women, it involved pornography and objectifying women both in person and online.
And I know James’s addiction isn’t pornography but I think people have to be vigilant about online pornography. It’s like having an open bar that never closes. And as long as nobody can see your searches on your phone, you can do in complete ‘silence’. And this goes for everyone. Young teenagers have their own phones and can start watching porn at a very early age. And because porn objectifies women, young boys feel that it’s ok to treat women as sex objects and it begins to warp their minds to thinking so.
Anyway, just wanted to share a bit of my story and like James, I hope others can learn from it.

When I got divorced 20 years later , 40 yrs old now, I actually was surprised that when a man took you to bed it wasn't because he loved you. Because thats what I truly believed . No it's not. It's about yourself and the people around you, although, it's more about who you are as a person, does not matter what age.
I was not raised in a perfect environment, all the boys around me smoking and drinking at very early age of 12-16, but I never did that, I've never smoked and never drank. The first drink I had was at the age of 18 and I disliked it, as my father was forcing me to do it, because it's a "man thing". I always hated the subjugation of things and I had many chances with girls too, but I never used any, because I did not want myself to be shallow and put myself down on the level of others. Does that make me a better person? No, because I have made many other mistakes with life, in general with people and connections, which were base a lot on relationships. But I've never had to do anything like that. Even, right now, being 25 and virgin, which I don't really care about, I do respect the space of others and won't do anything stupid. I care about my life.
Now, if you are someone with "power" like Franco, I can't say anything about that. But as a regular person, I think fighting temptations is not hard, unless you enjoy them and don't feel guilty.

Sure you never had a temptation to drink or smoke, but not everyone's addictions are the same. Some people are addicted to the internet. The brain usually latches on to things that it feels will relieve stress or pain. Your brain development never happened that way, which is good. I’m no movie star or millionaire, but I cheated on every girlfriend I had in my 20s. I cheated on girls I was cheating WITH - the chaos did something for me, filled a hole for a little while. My first serious relationship ending just completely broke something inside me and I stopped giving a shit about whether my actions hurt anybody for a long time, sadly.
It’s easy to jump on the hate bandwagon for this guy, but he’s a damaged person and seems to be very honest here. That’s incredibly hard to do.

As someone who has struggled with addiction myself, I’m grateful to hear him discuss his struggles publicly. You would forgive the transgressions of a drug addict because we all know they are a slave to their addictions, well, this is no different. I’m not even a religious man but I must say, “Let he who is free from sin cast the first stone”.

@@woke1497 My mother is a rape survivor and my sister and I are survivors of childhood sexual abuse. It's insulting to have people like James Franco who partake in consensual, if not inappropriate, sexual behavior be placed in an umbrella category of sexual predators. His actions are a far cry from those of a rapist or child molester. The ethics of his actions are up for interpretation but he is not to be lumped into a category with true monsters of the world. This nuance is incredibly important to distinguish an addict from a predator. And, lastly, if someone is sleeping with him for career ascension or material wealth, the question of who is actually being exploited and taken advantage of is debatable.

Didn't his parents teach him respect for himself?? Why is he loooking to others for HIS respect??? And why is he looking to women for HIS respect, isn't he a man?!??? Where is the father figure in his life? Doesn't his mother care about him??? Is this how he pays homage to his mother, WOW!!!!!!!!! I wonder what she did that he would treat younge girls like this. I‘ve always liked James Franco a lot and thought he is such a cutie and so handsome ever since the first Spiderman movies came out with him and Tobey Maguire! Than the horrible accusations of him came up where woman accused him of many different sexual assaults and I was pretty disappointed but also shocked since I never expected that from him and always wondered how it could be like that since he seems like such a nice and fun person! I didn’t really wanna believe it! I think this is an amazing interview/podcast where is really opening up and being vulnerable and honest about everything and his mental problems! (i mean it could also be fake to polish is career and reputation because i don’t trust celebrities) but regardless I think he is a really cool actor and I am sorry he felt the way he did! I remember Justin Bieber saying the same that he had a sex addiction! Don’t even know how that happens but I truly hope James will get the help he deserves and can find the fulfillment and validation he craved within himself! That‘s the most important! I wish him the best no matter what!
