But I do implore you to look into getting a camcorder for any future awesome events like this, so you don't have to cut off and restart filming every ~20 minutes or so... It is a shame to have missed out on that story about the hotel room (not so much of a shame to miss that guy doing a shameless plug near the end, though). Brain studies need to be done on Tommy. He seems so sincere as if he is 100% clueless how bad he is and there must be something different in his brain. I've been playing music over 20 years and as far back as I can remember and even now, I always can tell if something doesn't sound right or whatever I am doing sucks.
    I am an experienced musician of 20 years and have always been able to accurately tell if something didn't sound right and if so I would stop or adjust and correct it. Even when I did not know how to play any instruments, I never thought the wrong chords or notes sound right. Most of my family either plays an instrument pretty well or works in the field. One family gathering my cousin playing guitar and hitting a lot of wrong notes. It wasn't horrible, but it was enough to make me very embarrassed to the point I would never consider playing in front of people if I don't know for a fact that I can succeed.
    My cousin just kept on going. Just a wrong note out of nowhere sounds like a cat got stepped on and my brother I have to try hard as possible not to laugh on accident. Is something wrong with my cousin like with Tommy? Why would he keep playing while making such obvious mistakes? Perhaps he doesn't know it's happening?
    If I had to play 1,500 notes and I know 150 will be missed and it's going to stand out or sound bad, I wouldn't even risk putting myself into the situation to be embarrassed. I would however work on it 24x7 without focusing on anything else. Not because I really care about playing this music, but because I don't want to embarrass myself.
    It's really hard for me to imagine having people see you fail while you are truly trying.
    It's kind of like how I look at betting. Not going to make any bets with friends unless I know for 100% certainty I am going to win the bet. I would love to see brain scans of someone who is self aware of failure / critical on themselves vs someone like Tommy. It's like he lives in his own universe. Money definitely plays the largest role here, without gobs and gobs of it, he wouldn't be able to do anything. It's a popular movie in part because of the budget and how that ties into the story. He put up his own money and he failed!!! Humans are very fascinating.

    I believe we all feel what Dave says about not knowing if you killed it or if its garbage, we're all wired to believe whatever we do that we pour our hearts in to will be great, but it doesn't at all depends on what our perception of it is. For that very reason, Tommy Wiseau's The Room might very well be the worst movie ever made, which it doesn't stop it from being a cult classic and one of the greatest, most talked about movies ever. Whatever you may think of the movie, in the end, you HAVE to respect Wiseau's resolve.

    I never thought I'd be able to relate to Tommy, but the whole... recording himself talking to himself as he drove around and whatnot. I don't record myself, but I'm constantly talking aloud my thoughts. It helps me think and clear up what's tumbling around upstairs. Tommy is definitely an interesting, even quacky character, but there is something almost... endearing about the man, relatable. It's so interesting to watch these interviews. Love it.

    I appreciate that James Franco refers to Tommy Wiseau as an outsider artist. Normally we think of that in terms of music (Jan Terri, Wesley Willis, Tiny Tim), but Wiseau was simply that on a much grander scale, using his unlimited budget and taking advantage of the other actors' dreams to make the big picture to get his art out there.

    I enjoyed The Disaster Artist film and, even more, the book. Wiseau is a deeply flawed man--a non-native English speaker and closed head trauma victim. A survivor.
    So yeah, The Room is funny--but what are we laughing at? If you've ever lived abroad and wrestled with a foreign language, tried to get idiomatic expressions correct, switched words in business meetings, in front of classes of much younger kids who speak much more fluently than you--you know the acute pain of wanting to just fit in. Just be normal.
    That's why the laughter here puzzles me. Once you understand more about Wiseau and his journey, his disability, and how he overcame it to achieve the weird greatness he finally achieved--what's funny? How does it continue to be funny?
    Do we laugh at all our non-native speaking friends when they botch English so horribly--as they sincerely try to get it right? Do we expect sustained, uproarious laughter when we try in our second or third language to do so?
    Yes, it's funny at first, a funny-sounding voice, Tommy's disability-rendered diction--it's a real gas. But I don't understand the sustained laughter, and why it's not considered cruel laughter at Wiseau's expense. In that light, it looks like a bunch of mediocre educated white people laughing at the "funny disabled foreigner."
    I love The Room and TPW's story--but it's not really 'ha ha' funny after the first moments.

      Hollywood is insecure and needs validation by shititng on anything that doesn't fit their views. The Room is funny and that is ok that it came out that way. I think it is ok to poke fun at the movie for being odd and quirky but i don't like how they use Tommy's personal identity as a joke.

    Dave Franco doesn't come off as an arsehole here, unlike the others ... interested to see this film; thought James Franco might be more simpatico with Wiseau than he comes across here ..

    • @teenagecelebrities
      @teenagecelebrities 6 лет назад +17

      James does seem like a right prick here. Celebrating the "failure" of him to his own good. Don't think he'd be speaking of him in the manner he does,
      if Tommy was actually in the room with him (no pun intended). You can clearly see Dave feeling uncomfortable when his brother is making fun of Tommy.
      Dave seem to have a lot more empathic view on Tommy, and probably understood him much better than James who ends up portraying him in the movie - ruclips.net/video/RxIIfAhm1FI/видео.html

      @lone6718 6 лет назад +3

      He makes a point. Now with this film being made, the real tommy believes he did everything right. Regardless of if that is right or wrong, Tommy is unable to see and accept his own flaws. Never met Franco, but something tells me he probably has dealt with the same issue(either it due to some he has worked with or just himself). As he said, he is an actor, playing an actor.

    Wow Film school screening crowds are cringy. Even this host is trying to get in on the limelight and be funny. It's usually the q&a students who want to put on a performance or ask an overly complicated question to look good.
    Great video anyway. Especially 2/4's way through when Franco just went on a story telling rants with Seth.

      How is this good-natured? I'm trying to see how it's not simply goofing on a non-native English speaker with a disability. I guess it's cute or quaint at first, but once you understand what you're laughing at--is it still that funny?

  • @brinarina97

    Dave is trying so hard to be respectful and they keep shutting it down. I could understand if they had actually known Tommy before making the movie. But they didn't even meet until after making most the movie? It's condescending

    • @SappyNoypi
      @SappyNoypi 6 лет назад +2

      brinarina97 I think it's because this based on Greg's book so it's more of Greg's perspective than Tommy's.

      Alvin John Agulto yeah, it makes complete sense for the movie to be that way, but the way they talk about him in real life is like he's a moron that's only there for their entertainment. I know they're not obligated to befriend him or anything, but James is just so focused on telling every weird or stupid thing the guy did like he doesn't have a brain... or feelings. He just seems douchey. He wants all the attention and doesn't care who he's putting down to get it. Hopefully Tommy won't care that everyone is laughing at him and not with him.
