The wording of the prompt is confusing. He likely did think of the prompt as that and tried to throw out a long name to hopefully have it work out since he's running on time
I think it’s a perfectly plausible explanation. Seconds were ticking by and he just shot the longest animal name that came to his mind hoping it would have 3 of the same letters.

@@viceroy_raygun being on the clock and in front of an audience can make people listen, interpret, understand, and react differently. If you want to answer fast, it will likely sacrifice accuracy, and having confusing/ambiguous phrasing doesn't help with that.
"Name an animal that have only 3 letters in it's name" would be more accurate for quickly processing something.

Therefore the answer was correct. But because everyone apparently assumed that the question contained the word 'only', the answer given was therefore interpreted as hilariously wrong. But who am I to stand in the way of laughers, because as we all know, if it's funny, it's correct.

My college had a Family Feud-style game show. They sent a survey out to all the students. One question was an animal with three letters in its name. I said alligator as a reference to this.
Not only as a reference to this, but to also give a correct answer.

Technically, he’s not wrong. The host didn’t ask about ONLY 3 letters. He just said 3 letters. So, the guys not wrong.
The point of the game is to give the same answer as the 100 people that have been asked the question. So in that sense they were wrong.
