From everything I have seen, I would not recommend using 小姐. Unfortunately it is still what was taught in my books, fortunately our professor was a native speaker who could provide a lot more context and real language. That being acknowledged, I think context is key and you wouldn’t be misunderstood…. I just think the alternative meaning seems to have taken over.
