      Yea, I Remember the 80's ( well most of it ). I was a Night club photographer for a Mega night club in the 80's , I've thought about putting up the Wet t-Shirt contest / Club bikini contests on you tube. Some good stuff. I've got a Bucket of Photographs that I've not dug through in years. Those were the days ! 35 mm in those days. I think I'll put some up as end roll footage on some vids.

    Thank you very much, you made it easy! Just line up to 45 rather than using imperials formulas that just confused me, and I'm a tech teacher.

    I can recommend the Imperial gear bender for 1 1/8". Our straight pipe most be softer, its described as half hard pipe, as I generally never anneal it unless I an tweaking it by hand.
    One trick I was shown back when I was learning was once you have the pipe in the bender you want to bend, take another piece of copper that has been cut square, put it in the bended in the ninety degree position (so the cut end touches the side of the pipe you want to bend) you can then line up your mark with either the inside, middle or outside of the short piece of pipe depending on what measurements you are working to so you get the bend in the right place.

    I never anneal pipe, anything up to 7/8'' will bend ok...even hard drawn. You can get 1 1/8'' gear benders, they save a lot of time and it's fewer joints. I think you should have covered pipe expanders as well, but I appreciate this was a short vid but after bending there is always joining. Expanding soft copper is no problem, but 7/8'' and above you need to anneal if it's hard drawn, again not using a fitting saves another joint. There is a trick to not splitting 3/8'' hard drawn when you expand it...that saves a leak ;) But good vid, there aren't many explaining the dark art of bending pipe!

    • @TheGalacticWest
      @TheGalacticWest 2 года назад

      Nobody has videos on pipe bending. Especially Hard copper. Everything in the store is tubbing or aluminum benders and even the supply houses Locke and Grainger don't have hard copper benders. You can't find advertised hard pipe benders online and nobody will explain the difference on RUclips unless you're diligent and put stuff together. I don't want to become a plumber maybe I just wanna make some weird shit at the lowest cost. Id like to learn how to do a cross over or long bridge. good tip to anneal the pipe but annealing softens the copper is that permanent? I was just gonna throw a spring in the pipe and use the imperial 370FH to slowly bend hard copper but if 1/2 - 3/4 can be done with just the bender; no annealing, that's better.

    In Denmark, to graduate your apprenticeship, you have pass a test in bending copper. But most guys, who do installations use fittings, because it's "faster". But i do prefer bending over fittings. Because every soldering is a potential weak spot.

    That was friggin awesome Dave!!! ThANKS!! Ordered the 370 from Amazon right before I found this again! We use the YJs in class, but I'm not fond of them, I'm going to see if the Imperial does a little better for me; I think the larger size will be awesome. The 470 was an option, that looks like a real competitor for the YJ with some additional features.
    Thanks for taking the time to go into so much detail. I enjoyed paying close attention to the color-change and when the black came in for ready-set-done! Again; good stuff. THANKS!

    I had a contractor tell me its impossible to bend hard drawn acr pipe. I guess he never seen it done.

    • @NorCal-refrigeration
      @NorCal-refrigeration  6 лет назад

      K Mech that how we run pipe. At least how I was trained.

    • @Kevin-ib4gv
      @Kevin-ib4gv 4 года назад

      You can't bend hard drawn acr pipe. He took the hard drawn and by heating it (annealing) under nitrogen to avoid the scale, turned it into soft drawn pipe, which you can bend. So technically, if you ask your contractor or anyone else can you bend hard drawn acr pipe, the answer is no.

    The 45° mark tip didn't work. I measured and marked 100 mm then bent the pipe, I then measured to see if my bend measured to 100mm, but it didn't. It was more. Is there a way to measure and bend in a way that if you measure for 100mm, you get 100mm after the bend too?

      Two categories of copper. Soft and hard ACR tubing. Soft tubing doesn’t require annealling with heat. Sometimes, even old soft copper that’s been in the truck a long time MAY require preheating, especially when you try to flare the copper and it wants to split.
