CRAZY MAD DOG APPROACH😮 ‘REVISED’ DESCRIPTION

- When I’m filming and chatting to the viewers, in this case Members, I’m always scanning the airfield for anything that’s interesting, but this one caught me right out as you’ll probably gather 😂
We’ve seen/filmed the Twin props taking this approach pattern into Rwy 33 using this tight left turn, so it’s nothing unexpected. But in the five times we’ve been here, we’ve never seen a DC9 make this same approach! Seems a late turn created that dramatic banking turn to adjust their line-up, but the whole correction is awesome, especially as they put it down so smooth - proper Freight Dog style 💪🏻
Here’s the official word from a viewer ‘afterburner33’ who was listening-in on ATC. It was a later change of runway…
The MD was on approach to 7, but was asked if they could take 33 by ATC due to the close trailing 747 behind them (who had raised concerns with ATC just prior about the spacing). The MD crew said they could take 33, and hence the late turn onto that runway.
That’s some handling skills, especially to put it down so smooth and on the centre line. Ex Airforce or Navy Carrier pilot maybe 🤔 so cool 😎

ATC "can you confirm todays cargo"
PILOT "balls of steel"
Just outside Learmonth Airport, on the way to Exmouth, by the beach is a sign "Balls of Steel" - dating back to WW2 - large metal balls moored in the Gulf and used boats or barges during Operation Potshot - just made me think of this! Learmonth is a military and civilian airport - interesting place to fly through
How about oatmeal for brains.
I'll stick with my cells thanks@@Steve757-fl1hd
🔥GREAT BALLS OF FIRE 🔥
🤣🤣🤣
The gasping at the start absolutely makes this video 😂
Hot “Carrier” break . Obviously a retired Navy pilot
That was a boatload of AoA he carried into -- and through -- that flare. Only way to do that is to fly very precisely.
Gotta be a carrier pilot. Nailed perfectly.
that was too smooth tho
"OK, nice straight approach to the runway"
"No... that's just what they'll be expecting us to do"
Any Airplane! reference is always a stellar reference haha
Shirley you cant be serious
Bahaha nice flying.
@@user-tw4xd5mj2z He was. And don't call him Surely! 😁
@@user-tw4xd5mj2z Who is this Shirley?
now thats the skills of a dc-9 pilot who's been round the block enough times. Amazing.
MD 80
If you listen to the ATC playback, the MD was on approach to 7, but was asked if they could take 33 by ATC due to the close trailing 747 behind them (who had raised concerns with ATC just prior about the spacing). The MD crew said they could take 33, and hence the late turn onto that runway.
Simple.. Sorry tower, no can do. We all try to help out the guy behind us or the tower, but in this instance - sorry my own butt comes first.
@@Steve757-fl1hd VTS parks on the north ramp so this saved them some taxiing time AND helps out another crew who might have to go around otherwise.
@@ethana763 so for a shorter taxi and to help out a guy behind you risk the crew, the cargo and the aircraft? And that makes perfect sense to you? Sorry, I never did something that dumb.
@@Steve757-fl1hd {Suggest listening to the recording on LiveATC.} Before accepting the clearance change, the crew asks for a wind check (it was 320 at 4) and then took the clearance to land on condition of a long landing on 33. Obviously they were comfortable with the request to keep their base leg for 33 north of 7R and make a very short final instead of continuing for 7R. Crew's discretion ended up benefiting the BigJet TV members watching live. I wonder if Everts' pilots have send this vid around on email :)
Ever watch or fly the River approach into Washington National?
That pilot knows his plane like the back of his hand
Former US Navy pilot..., just doing the normal carrier approach - and landing!
Or Marine aviator
Just what i thought
Or former Navy C-9 Nightingale pilot
YES. Those wings are made of GOLD!
Speed control is everything
Reminds me of 1980 when I worked on the ramp at LAX. I'm sitting on a belt-loader (on a break) and a PanAm 747 is just starting its takeoff roll, when another PanAm 747 (cargo) was coming in on the same runway. I thought "this will be interesting". Suddenly, the approaching plane made a 35-40 degree bank to the left, and landed perfectly on the other runway. Barely any time between the bank recovery and touchdown... it was amazing and I'll never forget it.
Landed it like a Carrier pilot!
I was going to say. Navy pilot
@@Chrisb8s or Marine Aviator
Yep, look out side window, 90° turn, bang it down on the carrier deck; nice job, chap (or chapess, tbf).
@@rickdee67 that would be a naval aviator as well technically
"I heard Jerry's in Anchorage"
"Really! Wait untill he sees this.....!" 😏
😂😂😂
I am so happy you made a short of this approach and landing! It was a thing of beauty to behold!
The man knows his machine very well. Nice flying!
Sounds like Jerry was passing a bowling ball 🤣🤣 epic approach and landing 🛬 fair play ✈️✈️👌🏻👌🏻
This reminded me so much so much of the landings at Kai Tak (Hong Kong) back in the day. albeit at a lower altitude, I even looked for the checkered board. Nice catch Jerry.
My first thought too! Flew into Chek Lap Kok last week, it's just not the same 😉
I tell people about that airport from 40 years ago but they think I am kidding since most landings now have such a long boring final.
Mad and silky smooth - the best of both worlds.😎Freight pilots are the best! What a shot Jerry!!👊🏻👍🏻
My favorite thing to hear in a DC-9 - "Cleared for the visual"
More like cleared for the visual, circle to land 33 and you’re cleared to land 33. That’s how they say it!
@@Steve757-fl1hd - Only if you're on an IFR to visual. I've had clearances like "Cleared for visual on any runway."
Like something from an air show😮amazing , well done Jerry , loved the recent anchorage shows , thankyou Jerry and Gilly for amazing efforts ❤️❤️
Hotshot! That was awesome seeing that live. Thanks to and shoutout to Anchorage ANC.
Beautifully executed ! Love DC-9 action, especially with those bucket type thrust reversers! Great catch BJTV !
Mad Dog Pilot in A Mad Dog doing Mad Dog landing. Special bit of coverage. The I take of breath.. lol. Brilliant
Always enjoy the Anchorage shows but this last one was the absolute best. Thanks Jerry & Gilly!
nice - hot shoe that bad boy. "Uh.. this is your captain speaking, ATC has asked us to use an alternate runway and, uh... hold on to your butts."
Now there’s a pilot who’s got the whole flying thing sorted. Very competently flown.
Wow now There's some Skill for ya, Enjoyed watching it live. Thank you so much for the Anchorage Shows Jerry & Gilly, can never get enough of them !
Great approach. I remember being in a DC9 cockpit during approaches like that. Mind you, all Mad Dogs, all cable driven flight controls, all hyd, except the rudder, though cable controlled, hyd operated. All manual. Thanks for the video
haha basically me when I'm playing any flight sim game, save for the butter landing 😂 Thanks for the context and sharing J & G 👍
Kick ass video. It's fun to watch an approach like this and seeing what MD-80's can do.
Awesome, you managed to clip it. That was just epic to watch at the time, now saved for prosperity. Puts our pilots to shame, fair play to the pilot, balls of steel is an understatement! 😂
Amazing bit of pilot skill. Awesome 😊
I can't stop watching this, I love Jerry's gasp at the beginning! Great catch though, incredible landing
That was smooth…props to the pilot.
I was very lucky to see it live on the channel and it blew me away at the time😁That is seriously impressive piloting, I tried it myself in the sim but in the BAE 146 and I did manage it but it was so hard to make that tight turn😂
You did a great job getting her down, Rab. Fair play!
@@nickgray8667 Cheers Nick😊
Now you can clearly see why they are called "maddogs" and not just the plane... Fecking awesome to watch 👍
That's just bad ass!!
Dc9 is absolutely a pig to turn like that.
Great video catch.
The gasp at the start. Gerry almost had a heart attack I’d say🤣🤣
Fantastic airmanship, love it!
That is some sick pilot skills right there 😮
flippin eck! giving me kai tak vibes, I love it!
No doubt an ex Navy pilot. 👍✈️
They sure looked smooth, and it sure looked fun!
What a boss landing!!
That was an outstanding landing
I've been waiting to watch this footage! I wanted to hear you Jerry, where's your audio in this clip? 😂
Omg,that was mesmerising, fantastic thank u big jet
Had one like that once in a Ryanair into Bournemouth. 180 degree turn, over the fence, and on the ground!
Amazing catch, amazing piloting skill and a Jerry thinking oh effing hell, it's going to crash !
This clip will get millions of views in no time.
Watched it live. What a skill.
Good to see a real pilot from time to time
When your pilot is a recently discharged F-16 pilot and he really misses his old bird.
Amazing use of rudder and side-slip. That guy is awesome.
So pretty!! And the mountains look good too.
Wow that is incredible skill and a beauty to watch!
Awesome approach! Would you be alright with me featuring it in Weekly Dose of Aviation? Of course you will be credited both in the video and in the description as before. Cheers!
Yes of course!
"Luckely no one's feelings was hurt during this inquiry"😁
Nailed it. Stabilized approach just before the numbers. Thanks for the clip.
Awesome! What a buzz pilots must get from landing like this
This is a fun one to watch more than once... or twice... 😍
I watched it live at the time very skilled pilot and fantastic moment
Skills with thrills 🙌🏾
Reminds me of the Iberia mad dogs at Tenerife south back in the day cutting the corner love it
That gasp at the beginning lmaooooo🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nicely done!
I've never heard a noise like that from Jerry before. I'm going to make it my notification tone 😂
Crazy just about sums it up! Great catch!
Just wow 😊
Impressive. Military experience for sure.
That was a fantastic piece of flying there!
The definition of “Cranking and Banking “
Deffo landed big heavy stuff in a hot LZ. Bravo. Guy knew exactly what he was doing.
Absolute brilliance
Seemed like a pretty dramatic "HOLD MY PEARLS" moment for the person filming. Pilot nailed it and held your pearls.
First time seeing something like this. Impresive
Back in the day, we used to make approaches like that all the time until they began to emphasize stabilized approach configuration and limited the minimums for low instrument circling approach procedures.
Wow! I have never seen anything larger than a Beach 19 do this approach.
Wow amazing 😮
The pilot knew and understood his plane! Greaser of a landing!
(Some) passengers love an approach like that. Others scream the house down; the only in-between is those suffering frozen awareness. I know it was a cargo flight, but I'd a loved to be on that one. I love the Mad Dogs. Nearly all gone now.
Dammn!, i would love to see the cabin view in that landing!!!
ANC always throws up something spectacular whether its in the air or on four legs
Truth 🙌🏾
That was awesome!!! notice the airbrakes on engines deployed before the nose wheel touched down!!
Superb bit of airmanship
That was amazing!
Watched it live. Was awesome
He called the BALL. Callsign: BAMF
PERFECT!!!
Excellent slip, well done
We used to do that going into Missoula MT but we also had to drop over a 8k ft in under half the distance of the runway since the airport is in a bowl basically. You get all airforce or Navy pilots in the winter and you'd watch as they would do a 90° turn over the airport to drop from 20k to less than 10k ft, then they'd run around the mountains and line up, get over the top and then dump everything. Flaps, gear, spoilers as well, nd we'd fall like a hotcake onto the final before they'd run at full power to float us onto the ground
Like a BOSS!
never gets old seeing that booster landing on its own. soo amazing
Jerry, I thought you were going to choke on yr food. Still can't believe you caught that
Amazing Approach 💯
Wooowser how cool was that epic 😮😍✈️💕
I've seen C-130's and C-141's perform the type of approach and landing. The C-141's have been gone for awhile but that was big airplane to perform that same circle to land maneuver.
The “cherry on top” is the left only reverser deployment that Jerry captured in the taxi.
It was like a “wink” from the pilot.
I did a similar landing in a B737BBJ with the Man City team onboard landing in New York La Guardia. The pilot was awesome.
impressive!!😳💪🏽
Ex airforce pilot, outstanding skill.
Nice work by the pilot and to Jerry
Amazing. 👏👏👏👏
