The usual fill of beer has like 1/4th or 1/3rd of the height (to the "cap", not the line) taken by the foam. The foam actually protects the beer from oxidation. If you have your glass go warm and let the foam fall, it will go bitter and unpleasant. The foam is there so that the beer does not touch air. So a good poor will usualy have the foam stay for a while on top of the beer, so you can enjoy the beer as long as possible. I heard an easier way to tell is, if after each sip, you see a foam line form and stay on the side of the glass. Also there should be no large bubbles forming in the foam, that is a sign of a dirty glass (probably not harmfull, beer is very picky about the cleanliness of the glass) and the foam will fall faster if that is the case. The pour called milk is for fun, it's not the usual way of drinking, but if you like it, whatever, you do you. The pour without the foam is said to be for hot summer days and for athletes, it's meant for quick consumption (remember, oxidation is your enemy) so you ask for the čochtan (cho-ch-tan, where ch is a special character in czech, you pronounce it by exhaling while restricting the airflow with the back of your tounge, so first you breath in and then transition from sssss to shshshshshsh and the a bit further, it's like a cat's hiss) and then you chug the whole thing. No waiting, it should not even get to a table, you pour it, grab it, drink it. But that is the traditional way, some breweries will make some other stuff up how to pour their beer correctly, but it is usually the rule that oxygen, heat and beer do not go well together.

Jasné, že mak je neškodný, je veľmi zdravý a hlavne je to najlepšia potravina proti osteoporóze. Opiáty sa robia z makovíc, čiže z toho obalu v ktorom sú makové semiačka.
Absolutely, I've seen some videos where junkies in Czechia were trying to get high on alkaloids from the poppy seeds trying to extract the opioids but then the reporters took their "product" for testing to the lab and found out that it was mostly a placebo. Basically, you can give it to children as one of the flavors because the other flavors most probably have more negative content than this natural product. I personally don't like the flavor but there is nothing dangerous in it and it is actually a very traditional flavor in Bohemia.
I never cease to be amused by the reactions of foreigners to Czech poppy cakes. In order to feel the poppy effect, you would have to eat so many cakes that you would get sugar poisoning long before that (seriously).
@@ryerye6587Because for most of our history we had much more in common with Western Europe than with Eastern Europe. And moreover, Eastern Europe means being in the same group as Russia.
Saying Eastern Europe is extremely insulting in Czechia, 😅, because Czechia has only about 30% of Slavic DNA. Most slavic countries don't believe in freedom and a free choice. For example in Russia and Ukraine if the government says you have to go to die in the front, they send you to die... ☠️☠️☠️ Eastern Europe doesn't believe in personal freedom and that you have the right to decide about your own life. Eastern Europe is fascist....
@@ryerye6587 When you think of Eastern Europe, most Westerners think of the backward communist Eastern Bloc. That past is just history now. Geographically and culturally, we are central Europe, more like Germany than Russia.
It's not a myth, when you eat a lot of poppy seeds there is chance you might fail opium/heroin drug test, but it doesn't mean you have opium in your system and yes it is safe to eat nevertheless. Czech poppy seeds aren't exception to this so please do not call it a myth when it is in fact possible to fail drug test by eating large quantities of poppy seeds.
@@Dumbis1 The czech varieties of poppy is very safe. The content of morphinan alkaloids in the seed (by the czech law) up to 20 mg/kg, but it is the content of 3 alkaloids - morphine + codeine + thebaine. To give you an idea of how low the alkaloid content of Czech varieties is - 20 mg of poppy is only the weight of about 40 poppy seeds, while a kilogram of poppy contains about 2 million seeds. When we consider that the monitoring carried out in 2013 by the State Agricultural and Food Inspection (SZPI) showed that the content of alkaloids (morphine, codeine, thebaine, papaverine, noscapine) in 12 samples of edible poppy seeds taken from Czech producers was 7.44 mg/kg and in the same number of samples from the market network 36.71 mg/kg, then the contents of morphinan alkaloids on the seed surface of Czech varieties are even lower than allowed by the aforementioned decree No. 399/2013. This eliminates the possibility of failing a drug test. Poppy grown in CR for food purposes is also safe for children. For fail a drug test, you would have to eat poppy seeds labeled as technical poppy grown for pharmaceutical purposes, but such poppy is subject to registration and may not be used other than in pharmacy.

I’m from Czech Republic (Liberec) and I just love watching people doing these vlogs about Prague discovering new stuff that seems so normal and basic for me but for them it’s the whole new world.
As czech, this video should be intro for everyone that wants to come to Czechia. Very good takes, and Im happy to see foreigners enjoying our country as much as we do. Czechia has many and many beautiful places, historical sightseeings and nature that arent in Prague. I really recommend to find some of those places and make some 1/2 weeks vacation around here. It takes 4-5hours to go from Far West to far East. Very small country with huge history and nature that is not only around a Prague. Good video!

Can’t beat getting a beer on arrival and one of the best beers in the world for that matter. Super cool. I live in Prague, so glad you enjoyed your visit.
I was an exchange student in prague and lived there for half a year. I totally fell in love with the city and people. Felt like home. Hard not to like prague!
How much do I love Prague? I've lived here 5 years and when I'm not wandering around the city, I'm sitting in my panelák watching RUclips videos of other people walking around the city.
These videos are such a trip down the memory lane :D You are basically travelling through my life (although in a bit mixed order) since on our first trip with my girlfriend we went to Copenhagen, then to Prague where we got engaged and finally Dubrovnik and Split where we eloped. Keep up the great work!
Hi, czech here. A lot of places in Prague were build in the 14th century, during the reign of Charles the 4th. Before his reign, his father let the country rot. But after Charles returned from his studies in France he rebuild Prague. He started the construction of many buildings like the Prague castle, Charles bridge and the cathedral. Also King Charles invested a lot of money into the beer industry.
Good choice with struddel. poppy seeds and plums is great combo. You don' thave to be afraid eat poppy seed pastry. poppy used in it is bred to have almost zero contain of drugs (up to 0.8% of morphine per 1kg of poppy seeds. ) So it's pretty safe. Even kids can eat it.
The cathedral is actually free to enter, you only need a ticket to see the crypt and the choir. And you really should go inside especially on a sunny day like that because the stained glass windows in there are breathtaking and color everything in amazing hues.. Admittedly I'm Czech myself but I'm fairly well travelled and love visiting cathedrals and I honestly believe that the St. Vitus cathedral has the most beautiful windows you can see in Central Europe at t he very least.
Unfortunately... the price are very different now... and Prague is much more turist than 40 years ago... but I think almost everything change bether way :)
Hi, I am glad you liked my country. However you missed so much.... Like we have thousand years of history, with culture, art and science. And Prague is not the only one with great sightseeings. We have a lot of towns with history (unlike your american fellows of 200 years of only wars in history), so I definitely recommend you to come back and stay longer.
@@tvojemanka Hm. Interesting point of view. I never thought about it like that. Maybe its because I am living in it whole life. Thats why I think, that we are a little bit unique, or there are some places like "Sudety" where you can find very interesting buildings, influenced by germany. We were veryclose to germans before war and we kind a mixed up with them on borders. Thats why you see in CZ german building (with typical wooden planks in side walls). Czechs dont do that. Its german style, but still found in our land and often the building is a hybrid of cz and ger know how. I can not help myself, but I think its unique. I always find these buildings different and very attracting to me. As it is clearly located inside CZ, but its ger building. Sorry I talked to much.
Over 800 kc for a meal for two? I understand that it is Prague because it is simply expensive there, but you can still get the same meal for two for half the price. The important thing is that you tasted Svíčková a Guláš and liked it
I think it includes the drinks too. And if you have let's say guláš for 300, svíčková for 350 and rest for drinks I think it's only a bit more expensive. I've seen prices like that even outside of Prague. Especially going around the touristy places I think that's a very OK price.
They were eating at Strahov Monastery (Pivovar Sv. Norbert), it's a rather touristic place just past the castle. I've been there recently when I had visitors from abroad, their food and beer are good but you pay nearly twice as much as anywhere else in Prague. 84-92 CZK for a 0,4l beer, 265 CZK for guláš, 320 CZK for svíčková
They had a meal in the center of Prague, there was at least beer and Ivana definitely had some other drink, so as a native of Prague I am glad that they were not robbed. The price seems fair to me.
I am glad you enjoyed the stay :). If you ever go back, I recomend to explore some historical places outside of the city center that are less crowded and equally beautiful (such as Vyšehrad or Hvězda). Or to go to some neighbourhoods where you can perhaps experience the local culture better (like Vinohrady, Letná or Holešovice). The historical center is nice but also very touristy.
12:00 You are corrent, in that time we had Emperor Charles the IV who is mainly responsible for the expansion of Prague as under his rule, the city was considered the imperial capital of the Holy Roman Empire
ahaha strong marketing techqinue from Pilsner at the airport, why am i not surprised 😁glad you enjoyed Prague. Fyi 14th century indeed was big for our country, mainly because of our king Charles the 4th, the only czech king who also became a roman emperor. He's done so much for this land he's still after 650 years considered to be one of our national heroes. :)
Just for accuracy 😊 Bohemian king not Czech king, no Czech kingdom but kingdom of Bohemia. I know that in Czech it's a slight difference, however in other languages a distinction is made between territory and modern ethnicity/language
You are wrong. Both sons of Charles IV, Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia and Sigismund of Luxembourg were Bohemian Kings and Holy Roman Emperor (Sigismund) or Roman King(Wenceslaus)
@@floriangabrielmendoza8767 even back then it was called czech kingdom, (crowns of czech lands) bohemia basically mean czech, even the bohemian region today is called in czech "čechy" bohemian kingdom was more for foreigners, for locals it was czech kingdom.
@GoGicz Bohemia means Bohemia, in past, now, in future. Czechia is Česko (Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia/Čechy, Morava, Slezsko). Until beginning of 20th century, the people living here was called Bohemians, even the language was named "bohemian" (lingua bohemica). Praotec Čech was created from Latin sentence in Kosma's Chronicle "Pater Boemus". If you seen the movie about composer Josef Mysliveček "Il Boemo", you should know that was his nickname in Italia, because he was from Bohemia (z Čech). There is simply a slight difference in Czech language that other languages reflect. The word Czech is used as an adjective for a language and ethnicity, in modern form only two centuries old. On the other hand, the word "bohemia/bohemian" is used for geographical names (Český raj/Bohemian paradise), culture topic like beer (bohemian style beer/ české pivo, but just for style, for new brands is correct term czech beer), history (Český/é král(ovství)/Bohemian king(dom) and patriotism (zemské vlastenectví). Even the German-speaking inhabitants were called according to the land in which they lived (Deutschböhmen - čeští Němci, Deutschmährer - moravští Němci, nebo Deutschschlesier - slezští Němci). Moravians are also Czechs, but at the same time, they are not Bohemians. The End.

Hey there, for a "dumplings" with svičkova or guláš, When I made for my "west" friend, I calll it "steam bread" I think is more accurate ;) btw 14th century was really important for Bohemia and Prague, because Charles IV , Czech king and Roman emperor made Prague imperial capitol...
If you have time visit places outside Prague as well, like Sedlec Ossuary (Bone church), Český Krumlov (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Bohemian Switzerland(nature park with interestingly shaped rocks like huge gate etc), also there are numerous Castles all around the Country. For relax and health procedures, there are many natural spas as well. For historical villages look for Skanzens e.g. Skanzen Zubrnice.
This is one of the best tourist videos about Prague so far, cool that you've done some research and said something about the history. Two things though: 1) You paid too much for that lunch. You will find these overpriced restaurants in the city centre, but get out of it (max. 10 minutes but sometimes even less) and there's no problem to get the same meal for a half of the price. Or use Google maps and find normal restaurants even in the centre. 2) The tickets in the castle used to be much cheaper, but obviously all the prices went up so these had to do the same. Yet the price is not that bad and I think you've missed a really nice opportunity to see the castle from inside. For someone reading this, definitely go inside. Keep in mind I really like the video, these are just some tips for someone considering coming in Prague. For example I had no idea about that beer museum which seemed like a really good place. Thanks for visiting us 🇨🇿
Thank you for your beautifull opinions, its really lovely to hear how beautifully can somebody talk about our country or cities, also you are very good informed, thx. :) Díky moc
:D Those fruits and veggies at Havelské Tržiště are crazy priced :D 40 Kč per 100 grams for strawberries .. during strawberry season :D Pea pods for the same price = even crazier :D It is like 3-4 times more expensive than supermarket prices .. it looks better in color and size but probably still should cost maximum half this price :D
I have seen tons of traveling Vids - your's very good but your sincerity makes it top class! Dumplings - Knedlíky: 1/ Those with goulash seemd to be Houskové - dough is prepared only with few chunks of roll / bun - rohlíky / housky 2/ Those with Svíčková were Carlsbad / Karlovarské a lot of white bread, rolls or buns and herbs 3/ There is another type - potatoe dumpings - Bramborové - thicker dough obvs. with potates, no bread, generaly much smaller in a diameter. Beer: I love Pilsner Urquel! Only adding to your points that it actually is quite weak alcohol wise. Thanks for the content and have a good time.
Its great that you enjoyed Prague so much. On turist path is usually quite crowded. Also if you looking for litlle bit cheaper restaurant or shop just go few streets away from turisth path. Price difference is quite big. There is no drug in czech pastry with poppy seed, so you dont need to worry about that. Its sounds like you have pretty intresting day. There is many brewery in Czechia from small ones to big ones you allready know. Almost every single one is worth to try.
If you are still there, visit Technical museum, or Tram museum, both in Prague. Tourists skip it, but these two places show different page of Prague, in 19th and 20th century.
St Vitus Cathedral fun fact - that building was founded in year 1344 but finished in year 1929. Yeah, no typo - 585 years under construction. We Czechs have all the time in the world! :)
Nice to see others interested in our culture :D Also....prices are much higher in tourists location. If you come for Example to Brno (which is 2nd biggest city in Czechia AND in Moravia region) the prices for lunch for two drop by 30-50% Your wife had traditional "svíčková" which is vegetable souce with meat and "Karlovarské knedlíky" (bread dumplings with seasoning) You had "Guláš" which is server with normal "Knedlíky" - made of white flour dough.
The poppy seed includes almost no amount of opiates, the codein and morphine are included mainly in the "poppy milk", the gum-like substance included in the seed pods od poppy. Czechia is a poppy superpower (I am not sure currently, we were primary exporter of poppy in Europe, even in world for some time), while many other countries have poppy banned as a drug precursive, while Czechia has an exception. As for the opiates included, the Czech poppy has supposedly even stricter standard than the EU itself regarding codein and morphine in poppy.
It is maybe a pitty that tourists are served "things" in the center but in other parts of Prague. We have here may parks, "lakes", nice places aroung the river, better restaurants than the expensive ones in the center, nice nature swimming pools in Prague Radotin, Lhotka and many more. And sandstone, santowns would in north and norteast CZ woul amaze you too :).
I am happy if u enjoy my hometown. Iam worked on Havels Marketplace about five years… and I see many changes, but fridge magnets still here :) . If u visit Czechia again I recommand u taste another beers. For example Brewlery Vinohrady is exellent Craft beer.
Thanks for the Prague's review! I love your food choice, goulash and svíčková are good representants of our cousine. I recommend "Koprovka" which is dill sauce with dumplings - but be careful in Czechia some hate it, or "knedlo vepřo/kachna zelo" which is dumplings, sweet cabbage with either roasted duck or pork. I even love "smažený sýr" - deep fried cheese altough I don't find it very interesting choice for someone to explore new daring taste of new cousine. I'd say you can imagine exactly how it tastes, something like mozarella sticks with different cheese. Anyway for sightseeing, your next time, try to visit "Vyšehrad" definitely more peaceful and greener and beautiful than Prague Castle and almost without tourists :) Thanks and you're welcome.
The cutest couple: Ivana and Steve 😊🤗 Prague looks incredible - have fun!!! 😁 What a gorgeous place. I think the Czech people are the best in Europe for speaking many different languages well, too. Maybe ask some to see (🤔?)…

Even a homelles ppl here can speak a litlle eng. or GER, and knows more about America, than average American knows by himself. Its because he was once a kid visiting school. In addition to great tips for trips around Prague, it also protects tourists from scammers, unnecessarily overpriced tickets and shows the hidden treasures of Prague that a tourist would never find on their own. Thank you for visiting Prague and especially enjoying it ❤️
As person who was born in Prague, I can tell you, that you can go to the cathedral for free, it you go to the vespers. Tho BE REPECTFUL! And dot act like tourist, its a religious mass, every Sunday I think. And almost on one go there, which is sad, after that, (the mas is like 15/30 minutes) you have whole cathedral for yourself, and can walk anywhere, BUT BE RESPECTFULL! Also, the mosaic on the Golden gate of the cathedral is The oldest mosaic from the North of the Alps mountains. And above it, behind the small windows are Bohemian crown jewels kept.
Funny fact - in the Czech Republic, Pilsner beer is often recommended by doctors for stomach and kidney problems, because its composition and the water used are seriously healing.
You can go inside the cathedral for free. It’s divided inside and one third of it is free and then you have to go through tourniquets inside to go further inside to see the tombstones of the Kings.
It always makes me laugh when foreigners think that poppy seeds in our pastry could make them high could eat half a ton at once and nothing would happen🙂

In order to feel the poppy effect, you would have to eat so many cakes that you would get sugar poisoning long before that (seriously).
thank you for saying "Central" Europe.
A euphemism for Eastern Europe. I dont know why Czech people thinks being called Eastern Europe is so insulting. Too much insecurity
Eastern Europe doesn't believe in personal freedom and that you have the right to decide about your own life. Eastern Europe is fascist....

@@Dumbis1
The czech varieties of poppy is very safe.

Good video!

Also King Charles invested a lot of money into the beer industry.
i'm a brazilian living in prague and what caught my attention in this video was your palmeiras t shirt... i'm glad you enjoyed the city!
At the end of the video he was feeling the beers already hahah

Excited to tag along again to a new country. Great to see the world thru' your eyes. Thanks for bringing me along, Steve lvana 😅😃

So for 2 it's 850 CZK for one 425 CZK, yes it's twice as expensive, I wouldn't give it for that :D also I live in a village not far from Prague
I think it includes the drinks too. And if you have let's say guláš for 300, svíčková for 350 and rest for drinks I think it's only a bit more expensive. I've seen prices like that even outside of Prague.
Especially going around the touristy places I think that's a very OK price.

The End.

I am really glad that you enjoyed your stay in Prague and especially that you enjoyed your stay at our brewery in Strahov Monastery.
This is one of the best tourist videos about Prague so far, cool that you've done some research and said something about the history. Two things though:
1) You paid too much for that lunch.

Nicméně i já intuitivně občas použiju rod mužský 🤔
