That’s a good question, I’ve never tried to put it in to joystick mode in gear. I would presume this is not possible as it would cause a problem when you come out of joystick mode. It is possible to drive it in joystick mode.
Holy. cow that's so nice. My 43ft trawler with single engine was a biiiiiit harder to pull into a slip stern first.

No it isn’t possible to activate the docking joystick in gear. It needs to be in neutral.
