  • Follow along as I give a new team member some pointers on docking a flybridge Volvo Penta IPS Pod Drive yacht. This was Ambers 3rd joystick docking and the first time in this boat. She used boat the upper and lower joystick stations and the Dynamic Positoning System with great and stress free results! Link to listing info for this F44 Below.

Great instructor. No yelling or over-saturating the trainee with commands. Just clear instructions, constructive criticism, and positive reinforcement. That smile on her face at 4:36 when he says "Excellent, nicely done" just shows her gaining confidence in her own abilities. Great job by trainee in being a good listener as well.

Docking without yelling, you will have a long, successful, and happy relationship. I saw a tip today I never seen and I have been doing it for 40 year. They left fender in place at the dock and he sprayed them with water before he came in to make them slickery. That was misspelled on purpose. Boating rocks

Used to drive a Hinckley tender years back. Single jet engine with a little bow thruster. I find Jet propulsion make docking look like a walk in the park. But it had a Joystick system (can’t remember the make) similar to this video that made driving a whole lot easier. Everything connected to one joy stick. That was impressive a design.

my take away is this, new captain had the touch and wear with all to focus on the manuver and nailed it piloting a new boat, she nailed it. Shouts out to instructor for calm, specific guidance, apparently they have practiced together prior but clearly he was composed and secure with her piloting the boat and she did not disappoint. Whether manuvering a boat with newer tech' controls or hard cables and no power steering slipping a boat ass-first takes control and knowledge of the boat your piloting. bravo for the success.

Nice job by the crew. Tiaras are beautiful, super well built boats.
Nothing wrong with using all technology available - heck I even use the internet sometimes.
Last year I installed some new batteries and forgot to hook up a cable that went to the bow thruster. Man, that was a rude awakening when it didn't do anything. Luckily was docking at an "easy" marina - just made a go around and came in. IF it were at my normal dock, it would have freaked me out - I always have a combination of ocean tide, river current and wind either sweeping up/down the river or coming across the mile wide river. I would definitely use my boat more often if I had this system - I think I'd even get my wife to do the docking while I do the line handling. Hopefully after we're done paying for college in a couple of years we'll upgrade.
It looked a little awkward leaning over the side of the boat and could have gotten beaned by a piling. Can you get a wireless remote for this system?

@@kingg213 It depends on the boat. these work well on smaller boats between the 25'-40' range without a flybridge. Whenever this video pops up on my screen I always show my wife. I always tell her that woman is driving their boat. She told me and last I dropped dead on our boat she will never handle the boat again. On our smaller boat we were back in huge Creek. You could have a thousand votes back there and still be able to water ski. The reason I mention that is to tell what she did. that's one particular day when it was just our family my wife and I are two sons she asked could she take control of the boat. I had no problem with that she is about the only person I let drive me. She even pulls our RV with our trailer behind it. I explained to her as we were heading down the creek to use the compass and stay on the heading. I explained to her to watch how much water we have under the boat and explain to her that a alarm will sound before it's too late. I don't think I was away from her no more than 5 minutes. All of a sudden our boat came to a complete stop. I looked at where we were and realize that she ran us up onto the sandbar. Even though she only damaged each prop but both of them were fixed very easy as we got back into our Marina. Ever since that day she refuses to try again.
So every time this video pops up I will put it on the big screen and most of the time she gets up and stormed out of the room yelling why don't you marry her then.
I'm very happy to see when women step up and do things that they're not comfortable with. A lot of times when we stop somewhere and she puts our motorhome and trailer some people come up and tell me I did a good job that was a tight spot. And I tell them my wife did that. Most of the time I don't even drive it any longer. I just wish I could get her to take the helm again.
I really do enjoy this video not just for the fact that I can tease my wife.

I am on my 5th large single-engine boat; have always docked them easily; no twin-screws and no bow/stern thrusters. As the saying goes, if you never had sugar in your coffee, you wouldn't know to miss it... with that said, that is a wonderful boat, with all the sugar, mind-blowing technology; and absolutely wonderful system for boat control. This is done by placing it inside the box you see in the buttress. With that being said you can install up to 4 joysticks on the boat via your local Volvo dealer so you could put one anyway you’d like. Thanks for watching!
