    I have grown these for 40+ years and have called them shallots in sub-tropical Australia. Grow them from late summer to end of spring. I keep bulbs from the end of one year to plant the next year. I just let the plant grow and then the tops die. Pull the bulbs out and cut the top part off. Store them on a tray with paper under them in a cool place. I plant 3 bulbs together about 6" apart - that can produce 12-20 new shallots. Good rich soil and plenty of water. Chop them up and use in tossed salads, scrambled eggs, soup, chop up and on sandwich., even just eat them raw. Growing from seed would be just a waste of time - use the bulbs. Easiest thing to grow - no bugs attack them.

      @mikelogan4493 So for us in the Northern Hemisphere our planting seasons are reversed from you folks. We plant new bulbs in our early spring and harvest in our late summer but in colder regions we can plant fall for bulb/roots development then with freezing temps the tops die off and the bulb remains dormant. Do I understand you lift the bulbs and store over your winter or do you leave them in ground to grow dormant over winter and sprout new growth in early spring?

    I wanna try growing these now! I always grow green onions and chives. These seem so easy to grow. I plant from seed always, no bulbs, so I'm sure it'll take a little longer for a harvest.

    Thanks Kaye! I just bought some and wasn’t sure how to plant them. Jacq does an awesome job explaining how to do it clearly. Will you be planting I’itoi on your new Tennessee homestead?

    Not to be an ass but I usually hear them referred to as “i’itoi muliplier onions” I know it’s not as smooth to say, I just thought I’d share

    • @Sal.sanchez
      @Sal.sanchez 4 года назад

      Thinking about it They do multiply so “multiplier” would make more sense. These don’t really “bunch”.
