    Started gardening at 6 years old with parents ( will be 62 in two weeks so that is 56 years of gardening! ) and never knew this!! I love getting new information on ways to garden because it can save money and time...not to mention preserve the old ways! Thank you, Kaye.
    Also, I love the purple onion on the red table and your purple plaid shirt as a backdrop.....yes, I love color therapy and this is like food for the eyes. :-)

    Hey, Kaye!
    I currently have a pot of green onions that I grew from the root-ends.
    Hoping to keep an endless supply!

    Purple onions are an everyday staple in my diet. I eat mine raw with whatever else I'm eating. Supposed to be good for neuropathy.

      Oh, I didn't know that, thanks! I have a hard time digesting them raw, but cooked are nice!

    Wow - had no idea you could restart onions like that! I have a small wire basket I put my onions in and often I have sprouts coming out of several of them. Usually I just try to use them up but next time I will use your method of separating the roots and planting outdoors. Thanks for the demo and sending prayers to mom..

    Missouri zone 6b here & had planted onions in 2023 that did not grow well but survived a hard freeze winter & grew back in 2024 in nice size bulbs, so yes they can overwinter in the ground. Note: just a couple didn't grow back & turned to mush, but the majority did grow back. These were planted in raised beds too, I also had a couple in ground that did well & either went to seed or formed a new bulb. Just keep the seed shoot cut if you want the bulbs to develop. Glad you posted this Kaye, good to know, thank you.

      @Latebloomershow  10 дней назад

      the seed shoot...? How can you tell? I've got old onions out there I need to pull out. IDK if they will make seed if they only put up seed every other year.

    When you were cutting the dirty looking bottoms at the roots I literally couldn't watch 😲 I just knew your knife was going to slip and that would be all she wrote for the onion roots ☺ but what a cool idea , I've never heard of this before, and the sprouts, yep I'm thinking the same , thanks for the video Kaye I always learn something useful on your channel, love is the key, always 💞 🧅🧅🧅

    Love onions in everything except desserts. Roasted veggies especially but sweated chopped onions smell so delicious. Great to find out how many plants can be in 1 onion. This is valuable information since we never know what is ahead

    Yes your onions will do great planting in fall. In Alaska I plant my onions in fall, cover with some wood chips Peet moss something like that.

      Oh it’s so good to hear from Alaska! It’s very rare. I don’t have peat moss but I got wood chips. So then do you harvest Anita or let them go to seed

    I just did something with my onions that sprouted. I have never done this but, I chopped up all the green tops and froze them and peeled the soft mushy part off and chopped and froze the good part left of the onion. I have never had so many onions going bad so fast. Must be this weird weather.
    I got a lot put in my freezer. I think I will separate some that are still starting to sprout and see if I can make some new onions. Thanks for this new idea Kay! 😊💖

    I’ll need to check Epic Gardening to see this process & reason.
    If you plant the onion bulb, it’s the second year of growth you’ll get seeds from it.
    When you cut a regular onion plant the root shallow in the garden bed or bucket and you’ll onion greens in no time, even seeds.😊

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  27 дней назад

      Yes I did that in a planter and it’s funny because some onions came up I used a couple I forgot about them and I was gonna pull everything out in September and clean that planter out and re-plant and all these onions started coming up again so they re-grew I didn’t even know they were in there. Onions are funny and fascinating. I had forgotten about the second year of growth so if I just planted those that would be their second year right?

    I Iove Botanical Interests. I just purchased parthenocarpic cucumber seeds which do not need pollenators and can be grown inside. There is a story idea for you!❤️ Also, have you grown potatoes from seed? You can start these inside over the winter months. I got these from Botanical Interests as well.

      If I had more space inside and more light you know I have to burn a grow light in the ceiling for Will I turn it on in the morning at 6 AM and I turn it off at six or 7 PM because there’s not enough light that comes in the windows even in the sunroom to keep those plants alive over winter

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  27 дней назад

      Except when there’s snow on the ground and that produces a lot of reflecting light back in to the sunroom

      Once I get what Hass to come in into the garage and trying to maintain that with the cats and they love digging in pooping in the planters and it’s just last year I said I wasn’t going to do it and I did it this year I said I wasn’t gonna do it and I’m gonna have to do it because there’s not enough room in the sunroom for everything unless I take the the chairs out and then I don’t have a chair to sit in the sunroom🤷‍♀️

    Watching you carefully removing that outer shell from the roots so you didn’t break them reminded me of something that happened to me the other night. I’m much the night owl, checking doors late at night in the condo bldg I live in with 26 others. Walking around observing things. As I was taking down my trash and recycling I could hear a cricket chirping so I went looking for the little guy. I found him under the couch in the lobby, all by himself, so I returned to my unit, grabbed a clear glass along with a piece of mail, went back downstairs, put the glass over him and slid the letter under his feet and picked him up that way.. it’s always tricky with these guys, have to be real careful to not knock a leg off or his antennas, etc.. and.. I did.. I broke a little off of one of his legs.. I felt awful. Well, at least he got put back outside where he belonged and not under our lobby couch. Great job on those onions Kaye! ☮& 💟

    I wonder if you just cut them apart and planted them without doing all that work?

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  26 дней назад

      Yeah so you can’t really do that without taking off those outer layers because you don’t know where the dividing line is and each one of those sprouts is a separate plant so if you just made a chop down through there you know he probably kill all three
