      Yeah, that D5500 was awful. I'm not sure I had the Rode mic yet for that vlog, but I know for sure in the vlogs after when I did, you could hear the focusing in the Rode mic. Better but still present. Crazy.

    I've had it for 2 years now. I know it inside/out. Extremely happy with it at all levels, video, photo, timelapse, 4K burst, etc... Autofocus I give it a 6/10. It also can be hacked if you need to shoot for longer than 30min/4K. Which I did. Thanks for your content.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  6 лет назад +1

      It’s really hard to complain at the price, too! For vlogging, I personally love the ultrawide look so the 7-14mm but the 12-35 f/2.8 is also quite good - can do some really nice, cinematic b-roll too!

    Thanks for the great info, I have been searching high, and low for a review on this camera for vlogging. Just like you, I have been looking at the Canon 70d, and G7, and just couldn't make my mind up. I really like the smaller size of the g7, and if I want to shoot 4k, or 60fps. I have those options with the g7. Thanks again for the great info!

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      Awesome! Glad it helped. I'm up to about 35 vlogs with this and I really like it. The weight savings is a huge bonus. From what I've seen, the Canon 70D/80D will focus a little faster but there's a lot the G7 does that those don't like you mentioned.

    I think you just convinced me to buy this camera. Great vlogs btw, just found your channel!

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      Thanks, Mike! Only thing I'm learning is that you have a lot more lens options with the Canon stuff. Like if you want a super-wide, Canon has a 10-18/4-5.6 for like $500. Only option for Panasonic is like $1000. Granted, it's a way better piece of glass but if you don't need a high-end piece of glass and you needed a super wide, an 80D and lens is about the same price. So just think through what lenses you want. I find the 4K extremely valuable in some situations so I wouldn't trade but if I didn't need that, I do need a super-wide so the 80D is tempting.

    • @MikeHallman
      @MikeHallman 8 лет назад

      Good point. I actually have a few Canon lenses, and I looked around and found that they make an adapter for the G7. I'm curious to see if that works.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      +Mike Hallman You can get adapters, but they typically manual focus and maybe manual aperture. I've got a buddy with 3 Panasonic GH4's a pile of amazing Canon glass that he uses together, but it's always manual focus.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      Anthony Knights That's a loaded question!! A VLOG is supposed to be you showing your world, but you could make it more documentary-esque. You gotta learn the fundamentals of film-making, though. Don't have to go to school, but I'd start watching RUclips videos like crazy on filmmaking and the technical details of shooting. That or just start a vlog and stick with it and you'll learn more about what works and what doesn't. FroKnowsPhoto is a great resource and I've bought and used his guides to video and they helped me a ton.

    hey Justin great job, I've been watching your video to get more confident with my g7, and that was awesome. I'm wondering how good would the microfone you have be, we do a lot of videos and at the moment I'm using a podcast mic, but in case the one you have is good I'd seriously think about buying it. how much 'room' does that give you when you record? is it good in case you get a windy day in the open? do you still need to be close to the camera or you can stand a couple of metres away thanks to that??
    thanks for your help and again great job! Frank

    I just bought this camera a few weeks ago. I'm still trying figure out the autofocusing

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      Full-time focus on the centre point is where I landed. Works well but the kit lens is a bit slow to autofocus. Still works the best I've found. Face-tracking isn't bad but sometimes you want to show something behind you and if you're in-frame at all it doesn't work.

    • @subtenk0
      @subtenk0 8 лет назад

      Center weight mode does seem to be better. Heres another tip, mess with the fstop, less depth seems to leave less from for autofocus mishaps and you can fine tune it so you still have depth or just have flat video.
      edit: obviously lighting is a factor with fstop values, but this is if you have an instance where you need fast AF with variable distances, otherwise you'd still be fine with AFC and center point

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  6 лет назад +2

      Canon M50 is the best vlogging camera right now. That's what I'd recommend. The autofocus on the G7 can't touch the M50 and you don't need 4K for vlogging. Plus, the kit lens is better for vlogging on the Canon or you can grab the 11-22mm for a LOT cheaper than an ultrawide for Panasonic.

      Yes my main priority is just capturing my face as well as the back ground mostly in action shots of my travels. But I also want to weigh in Pricing and weight as well. Thanks a lot for your videos, I feel that your style is different and you review a lot of different brands including the Nikon d5500 that I am having frustrations with as well, where as other RUclipsrs seem to stick to one set of brands, it's really refreshing

    Thank you for this review, It really helps to see someone who owns that camera (g7) and review it, now ive had my hands on the 70d (burrowed) and its solid, heavy but have a good reputation as you say it used by a lot of youtubers/vloggers. and takes awesome photos, however limited to 1080p 30fps, now the G7, very light, can shoot 4k 30fps, 1080p 60fps which is awesome, but not photography isnt as great as 70d (bigger sensor) and build quality apparently feels cheap and not weatherproof. ANYWAY, ivebeen hunting why i want a g7 mostly because its lighter and shoots 4k, and 1080 high frames and amazing videos, so still battling which to get LOL

    Would changing your F stop for more depth of field make it easier to keep your face in focus while blogging?

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад +1

      +Ed Waggoner Sr. (Papatch) Yes, the higher the number, the more that's in focus. However, the higher the number, the less light you have so you're trying to balance that part. If you're indoors, you'll quickly run out of light with a higher f stop. Depending, too, it can be nice to have the background blurred to remove distractions so that's another consideration.

    Great review. What's your thoughts between the G7 or the GH4 for a vlogging camera?

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      +7Figure Chance For vlogging, I think the G7. It's lighter and more expendable while still delivering almost identical 4K quality. Even the lower 1080p quality on the G7 looks fantastic. Battery life is going to be lower but I just bought a couple extra batteries and you're good. I'd cry if I broke a GH4 but a G7 is a little easier to swallow. You're not using all the pro features of the GH4 while you're vlogging.

    • @7figurechance
      @7figurechance 8 лет назад +1

      +Justin Reves haha right on! The way I get around the GH4 most definitely could take a fare share of bumps. Awesome the G7 definitely would fit me better then. Thanks Brother!

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      +7Figure Chance The GH4 is built like a tank, too, but there's lot of times you're putting the camera in harms way when you're vlogging. Sometimes it's other people and you'd feel as bad for them as you would for your camera.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      Jacob Tran Have you watched recent ones? Some of that is my own skill, but honestly, the focus on this camera isn't going to be like a Canon 70D/80D or some of the other systems where they're using both phase and contrast detection for auto focus. Better lenses make this a bit better, but you've gotta give it a second. Honestly, the only thing I'm disappointed about in the camera after 160+ VLOGs, but I found ways to work around it.

  • @jasminejones4972

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      +Jasmine Jones Awesome to hear! Do you mean like a bag? Look for ones for mirrorless cameras like Sony, Fuji, or Olympus, too, but honestly, and bag that's says made for Nikon or Canon will work just fine, too. It's a little smaller, but that just means you can fit more of other stuff.

      More like a fitted leather case, like this www.amazon.com/dp/B01H1QZ8FW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1K77UYWKQHWMU&coliid=I38FFHPM7PG0AO&psc=1

      Jasmine Jones Ah yes, I don't think it's quite in the cool "hipster" cameras to get one of those. Panasonic is just kinda up and coming. I think their GX series might have leather cases but because this is more of a DSLR style, I think it will be tough to find.

    Was pimping my iPhone out to be my main vlogging camera but just couldn't take it anymore. Scored a perfect condition G7 on Craigslist for $500 with kit lense, 16gb card and case. Paired up with Joby hybrid and Rode VideoMicro this is an unbeatable package for under $700. Couple spare batteries and a 128gb SD card and I am SET.
    I still want to shoot with my iPhone though but I have just started to see the limitations especially in low light and also the 35mm lense view on the iPhone sucks. You need a Moment lense which is $100 on its own. That all being said an iPhone can still make it happen I just think for general work flow with a real camera makes things easier.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад +1

      +drewmorgan Wow, that's a fantastic setup! You can absolutely make an iPhone work, but it's just more work and the quality isn't going to be the same. But story is always #1 - not the camera. I'm sure you'll enjoy the G7 though!

    • @drewmorg.
      @drewmorg. 8 лет назад

      Justin Reves The iPhone 7's new low light capabilities and OIS built in are compelling. I bought an external battery bank to keep my iPhone charged up but I'm now realizing that's just as inconvenient (if not more) than just bringing 1 or 2 external batteries for my actual camera. The G7 seems to be much more efficient with battery life while filming than the iPhone as well. I ran Filmic Pro for a maximum of 30 minutes the other day while filming and I want to say it ate 40% of the battery! Easy way to kill your cell phone battery if you aren't prepared... I guess I am just learning that is what filming is all about :)

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад +1

      drewmorgan The big thing in low-light is how big is the physical sensor that is recording the image. Think of it like a bucket in the rain. Except in video, the rain is the light and the bucket is the sensor in your camera. In really bright daylight (downpour of rain), it doesn't matter how big your buck is, it will fill up. But when it's just a little bit of rain (the dark), you want a really big bucket to capture as much as possible. The iPhone uses a sensor that's about 1/3rd of an inch. Whereas the G7 uses one that's 4/3rds of an inch (1 1/3rd inch) which means it's a WAY bigger bucket which is going to lead to much, much better quality at low-light and anytime you step indoors. Plus, the iPhone you can't see yourself on the good camera to know if you've framed it up well. All benefits to something like the G7.

    • @drewmorg.
      @drewmorg. 8 лет назад

      Justin Reves Thanks for the awesome explanation and as I was testing both cameras side by side indoors and in very poor lighting last night it was pretty clear who won that battle. The G7 crushes the iPhone in those conditions like nobodies business. In great outdoor lighting you can actually get very similar quality and I've even seen professional videographers say this on RUclips and show it. That being said I will still use the iPhone when I feel it is appropriate as it can be a handy tool to get the shot especially when utilizing Filmic Pro and external audio which I have rigs for. I will hold off on the Moment lense for now since I have the G7 and it has a slightly wider perspective than the iPhone stock lense (28mm vs 35mm respectively).
      I also realized that carrying around an external battery and filming on the iPhone is just not the best work flow. I still need to use the iPhone as a phone and do social media stuff by hand and text etc. I can now see why people have dedicated cameras for filming. The G7 isn't much better than a battery bank so why not just take the G7, right? :)

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      drewmorgan I totally use the iPhone here and there when I don't want to bring the G7 in places! I'd like too get a little Rode VideoMic ME or something for better audio but it does ok, too.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  7 лет назад

      It depends on the day and how much you're shooting. Most days 1 battery is fine. If you're shooting a lot of footage and/or 4K, you'll want a second battery or two, but I just buy knock-off ones and they've worked fine.

    Hi Justin, nice review! Can you tell how the D5500 and the G7 performed at low light environments? I‘m looking for a cam for beauty vloggin issues, thus videos will be made at home with less light than outside. Did you notice heavy noises at low light level / high iso values?

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  7 лет назад

      +Kamekaioken D5500 has a little bit bigger sensor so it might be marginally better but the G7 was fine at lower light. However, if you’re at home and doing beauty, the more light the better it will look. But even getting a bunch of lamps will make a big difference. Walmart is a great spot to get some even. Put them in front of you and light up your face.

    Hey Justin, I just recently bought this camera after watching numerous videos on different cameras. I am a complete camera noob and wonder if I bought a camera that is too complicated for me. I do not know anything about F stops or aperture, etc. Overall I am very unhappy with my purchase mostly due to all my footage is extremely noisy and not crisp like yours or others. I often wonder if it is me or the camera. I am considering getting a new camera and I mostly just want to do vlogs. I am not too worried about being a "photographer". Is there any camera you can think of that would be good for someone that wants superb video quality and the camera does most of the work. I was about to get the G7X but no external mic input is what kept me from that one. Currently I am looking at the Canon M6 I just do not want to make the same mistake twice and buy a camera that isn't right for me. Thanks for any advice, your videos are awesome.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  7 лет назад +2

      The G7 can be a bit complicated, but I think with an hour of time and a bit of practice, you could actually learn about the basics and really make it work. If the footage is coming out grainy, then something is probably just set wrong and there's a chance you can do that on any camera. I have thought about the G7 for video for a while. I like Fuji for photos, I hear the XT-2 that comes out will be 4K so I may wait but the G7 kit in states is like $599 and that is great.. maybe the best way to go the XT-2 will be around $2000 body only.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      +William Knight Yeah, the G7 value is crazy. There's certainly better cameras but not for the money. The kit lens is junky, but otherwise the body is unbelievably good. I've had pretty good results with photos. Check my Instagram from when I was in Mexico in late March and there's some sweet shots in there.

      silly question but I have felt for sometime that cameras like G7 has a much larger sensor than video cameras. How does the G7 or an ASPC sized sensor compare to a video camera for video in your opinion.

    I just bought the G7 like a week ago, and i was thinking of getting into vlogging as well as narrative videos and skits so i am that you like and recommend the camera. i'm the same with you i don't have a 4k computer screen so i can't view 4k footage plus the files would be huge. I got two questions about the 4k ; does the monitor on the camera display 4k? and do you shoot all your vlogs in 4k still? btw great review

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      +legobuilderfrom2000 Thanks, man! I don't shoot them all in 4K, but I use the 4K when I know I want to crop something or a portion of a clip. Like do a time-lapse in 4K and then you can pan or "punch in" on an area of the time-lapse. Storage is relatively cheap (like $180 will get your 4TB drives which is a lot of vlogging), but it taxes the computer more when working with it and exporting which is tough when you're trying to put stuff out quickly.

      You're right! I'll probably do a follow-up video mixed with a preview of the new G85 together as I'd feel bad endorsing the G7 again without mentioning that it's probably worth going to the G85 and most of the positives are the same between the two.

    Useful mate. Can you recommend a setting for me if I am stood doing a piece to camera? Or link me to your video vlog where you are usig it and I can copy your settings???????xxxxxxx

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      That's a bit tougher if you're far away, but I'd recommend single-point AF and stand with your face in the spot where you set it. A nice little trick is to download the app and use that to select the auto-focus point. Other option is to put something right where your face will be and manually set the focus so you know it's going to stay locked. My camera lives in AFS/AFF 90% of the time with the full-time autofocus on and I just let the camera handle the autofocus. It's just tough if you're standing 10 feet back to make sure you're still in the right spot. I've recorded a video before where I moved slightly, the camera focused on the wrong part and I couldn't see, and the entire shot was ruined.

    • @carsuncovereduk
      @carsuncovereduk 8 лет назад

      Trouble with the app is - the low res quality can't tell if you are in focus or not... This is a nightmare this learning curve. Thanks for taking the time to respond though friend. I could maybe stand with the app, facing the camera and use the app to set up the shot maybe, and use facetrack? Although I read that its not very good.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      +HR in a Car If the app will show you where the focus point is, then you can stand there at least to know you're in the right spot but yeah, there's not a great option. The face tracking can hunt too much with the focus which is distracting. Most people have a dummy or something they can use to focus on, set it manually and lock it in. Then go stand where the dummy was.

    • @HowardRitchie
      @HowardRitchie 8 лет назад

      Tried trackign today it was actually not too bad if you use the second one not the eye one.. the eye one is no good.

    • @JustinReves

      Yeah, I'm not a fan of the face tracking but the single point has been good to me.

    Hi Justin! Thanks for the video! I'm considering this camera vs the Panasonic Lumix Fz300. I know they are two different cameras but they both have the 4k, flip out screen, mic input, auto focus and a few other features I really need. I will be using the camera for vlogging as well as my sit-down studio interviews. The fz300 is considerably less money (a bit larger in size) but I'm a little concerned about the image quality. While the g7 is a great size, more money but I'm concerned about getting into the lens/glass buying that seems like it will cost me much more money in the end. Pls let me know your thoughts on which you think is best or if there are any others I should consider. Thank you!

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      Hey there, the FZ300 is a pretty cool camera, but it uses a tiny little sensor which means it's not really designed for low-light situations. If all your shooting was going to be outdoors, sure, but that's not likely going to be the case. You can definitely spend lots on lenses for the G7, but those lenses will last for years and year and you take them when you go to upgrade. The FZ300 will be obsolete in a couple years and you won't have anything to show for it.

    What camera are you using to film this video ? And does it have an external microphone ? I am looking for a camera with an external microphone, at a low price, used/second hand as i am on a budget, maybe something off ebay for doing vlogging/general videos. Do you have any recomendations ? Thanks

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      +justmadeit2 I believe I was using my Nikon D7000 to film this, but likely your cheapest option would be a used Canon T3i/T4i/T5i and try and get it with an STM lens which is much smoother for video focusing which is important for vlogging. I wouldn't get a Nikon for Vlogging unless you're buying the absolute newest ones with the new AF-P lenses. Other option is just using your phone but getting the Rode VideoMic Me to give you solid audio.

      MeshaL AL SadhaN by using a tripod, it helped a lot with stabilizing. The G85 is smoother with Its IBIS, but the last 60-70 vlogs I did were with the 7-14mm on the G7 which didn't have any stabilization in either and I think it was fine. Watch in the VLOG 120-140 range to see it in action.

    Great review, very informative! 🙋🏽 How do you still feel about the camera now that some time has passed? I'm still thinking which mirrorless camera with mic input get 🤔
    I see most youtubers shoot video with the canon d70 and have some other point and shoot like a canon g7 or Sony axxx for blogging and pictures/selfies
    But I was hoping I could just invest in a mirrorless camera with mic input that could work for both things with good silent autofocus, battery and no overheating to shoot longish videos since tutorials/gameplays can be long to shoot plus I will use it mostly indoors
    Sorry for the long comment 😂 Its a little confusing and looking for some advice from more experienced youtubers that use this types of cameras hehe

    Hey Justin just wanted to thank you for the review. I thought your review was spot on for someone who wants to buy a blogging camera. Comparing 70D and G7 was great cause this camera is definitely an affordable and great alternative for a blogging camera if we can afford to drop $1000 for a VLOG kit. Would you also say that it's a great starter camera for a DSLR? And Now that you've had more time to us it- how are you finding it? Is the Focus comparable to the 70D?
    Thank you again for your Time! Great review. Helped me out a lot.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад +1

      +Kristopher Manabo Hey Kris! The focusing is the one thing where the 70D/80D can't be beat. The dual-pixel CMOS on them is simply the best-focusing system out there. But, the G7 is still good. And then the G7 has 4K, 60fps, way, way lighter, and cheaper than the 70D. As far as photography goes, the micro four thirds sensors like the G7 are smaller than the crop sensor on the 70D which means you're not going to get the same level of "bokeh" or the blurry backgrounds, but with the right lenses, you certainly can get lots. The advantage the G7 has is that it can fire insanely fast for sports or action shots. I used to have high end, full-frame Nikon gear but I've sold it and use my G7. Not as good but it can still be excellent for photography. Check my Instagram to see it in action for photos. @justinreves

    How has the kit lense worked for you since this video I'm thinking of getting this camera but am unsure about the lense bc of the micro 4/3 sensor.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      1 1/3 of an inch is still a pretty darn big sensor. Obviously not as big as a full frame or crop, but typically they keep the pixel count down so the pixels can stay big for strong low-light capability. I used the kit lens for about 15 vlogs and it was honestly just fine. The Mexican Vacation VLOG from like 012-019 were all with the kit lens and it did just fine. Kit lenses with any camera are flexible and fine at a lot of things but not great at any one thing other than being light and versatile. The camera definitely gets a bit more fun with other lenses, but it can produce some really nice images even with the kit lens. What kind of filming are you wanting to do?

    Is it hard to learn to use for my first camera for video (vlogs and eventually short films) coming from shooting videos on my phone from time to time?

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      +davidbrown1995 Honestly, if you put it in "P" mode on video, it will be almost as easy as your phone. Just learn which "focus" mode you want as you can choose how it auto-focuses and that makes a big difference. If you want to do more "film-making" with creative stuff, you just gotta learn a bit more about aperture and then put it in Aperture Priority mode while shooting. Then you can start blurring stuff in the background to focus on your subject or the opposite if you want to show a giant landscape. You can't do that with your phone! if you didn't have your main Nikon camera, you would've picked the 70D right? Im thinking you can do more with the 70D. or is the g7 that better over the 70D? I'm thinking to buy the Canon cause price is lowered. 18-135 kit a little less than $900. I'm into photography but also video.Maybe start a RUclips channel too.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      If I needed one camera for photos and video, yeah, the 70D is a great option. Right now I'm kinda disappointed I've got so much invested in Nikon glass because Canon feels ahead on video stuff and they obviously make great cameras for photos too. But one camera from Nikon can change that. The dual pixel cmos for focusing was a game changer on the 70D for video shooters. The 70D up here is like $1500 still with the 18-135 so for $900 where you are, that's awesome. I wouldn't pick this G7 for serious photos. The sensor is so small, blurring backgrounds is hard! I've shot briefly with the 70D and it's good! What are you using now?

    How do you like it now after a while of using it? Hesitating between G7, GH4 and 80D... The thing is that the GH4 in low light needs improvements & they will announce the GH5 pretty soon - so I thought maybe get a cheaper G7 in the meantime.
    70/80D has no 4k....
    What are your thoughts so far?

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      The 80D is the best-quality vlogging camera out there in my opinion because 4K isn't a requirement for vlogging and the way that thing focuses is unlike anything else. But it's pricey and heavy and bulky. On the other hand, the only ultra-wide angle lens worth getting for the Panasonic is $1500 new here in Canada. I got mine used for $750, though. Now, it's a fantastic piece of professional glass, but you can get an ultra-wide with image stabilization for the Canon for like a quarter the price. So if you're planning to do ultra-wide, the 80D plus a cheap ultra-wide is going to be the same - or even cheaper than the G7 plus an ultra-wide. G7 or GH4 on 4K with that lens is going to crush the 80D in pure-quality, but vlogging is more about story than that crazy, crazy quality. For me, I don't just use the G7 for vlogging - it's also being used for some professional work like interviews and business stories where the 4K is extremely, extremely useful. It's also way, way lighter and less-bulky than the 80D. And if you were just going to use the kit lens, it's way cheaper. GH4 offers a lot of amazing professional features but you're not going to use that for vlogging - if you're a film-maker, the GH4 is incredible.

      +Justin Reves thanks man! you can see from (most of) my videos I always have a time lapse/nice scenery shots. I just got the G7 I will try it out and exchange if not happy. right now what blows me away is they weight and size!!! I got it with the kit lens 14-42. What ultra wide do you recommend for this? if I were to keep it was thinking of 12-35 but maybe you have better insight (12mm is still not equivalent to my 16mm ff).

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      PierTL So I shot VLOGs 24-79 with the 12-35/2.8 and it's beautiful and so flexible, but I wanted a little wider. I had a 16-28 on my Nikon D800 and I love going crazy-wide like that. I tried the Olympus 9-18 first (so 18-36 equiv) but the focusing wasn't great. Didn't realize Panasonic's DFD tech only works with Panasonic lenses so I got the Panasonic 7-14 f/4 and I've been using that for the last 25 or so vlogs and I really, really like it. It's not cheap, though, but it's a really, really nice piece of glass. 12-35, though, gives you way more zoom and low-light capabilities, but being able to be 14mm (full frame equiv) is pretty awesome for showing off the world.

    • @PierreTL
      @PierreTL 8 лет назад

      Oh thanks! Just checked the difference in your Vlogs. I also love going wide so 14mm right now feels tight and I could get used to that 7mm easily :-)

      +HyperPotato No, but I'm using an external mic. Internal mics can pick up the very slight vibrations from the lens motor. The kit lens for me has been very quiet, though, but I don't know if I ever really used it without the external mic. Rode VidoMic GO is like $100 and definitely worth it if you want way better audio for your video!

      +MeetingSkylar I actually just shot a few interviews with this camera. What's great about it is that you shoot in 4K a wider shot and then can zoom in post to make it look like there's a second or even third camera. This lets you hide all sorts of transitions and edits. I was really happy with the quality of the video.

      +Justin Reves hi again, one quick question! I watched more reviews on this camera and a lot of them mentioned the fact that the auto focus on it is not that good? Since I'm planning on filming mostly vlogs and sit down videos, id really appreciate it if it could still have the blurry background effect? Or do I only have to adjust the setups? Sorry for this long comment, auto focus is one of my major concerns! Thanks again !

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      Some people may not know how to use the autofocus. In single-point set to the middle, it's been great for me but it does take a it a second to find it if you're switching between things. The lens that comes with the camera also isn't the fastest-focusing lens. If you want a blurry background, though, you'll need a different lens than the kit lens that comes with the camera. Something with a low aperture like the 25mm/1.7 (although that isn't wide enough for vlogging but is good for interviews).

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      I love my Nikon gear, but it's really not the best value for video. They just haven't invested in the lens technology to support it yet. A Canon, Panasonic, or Sony would be a better buy. For similar money to a D5200, you could get a T5i or something like this G7. If you're really interested in Photography, too, I'd got the Canon route.

      +That Horror Show 60fps is a different feel. 30 isn't much different from 24. 24 is the "cinematic" look like all the movies you see in the theatre are shot at 24fps. 60fps is fine for sports but it honestly looks weird. Some people love it - not my favourite. But it's nice to have because you can get really smooth slow motion.

If they don't have stock, though, and I need something today or it's Sunday, I'll go somewhere else. So I'm loyal when they're convenient or close on price. I bought a camera, couple of expensive lenses, tripod, and a bunch of accessories from them in the past 6 months. This G7 I got from BestBuy because they had it in stock and on-sale. I didn't see it on Don's website.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      +Joe Kostka I am still using the G7. 125 VLOGs in and I like it. Focusing compared to the 70D/80D isn't going to be as good, but once you learn to manage it, it's fine. The new G85 is coming later this month to replace the G7 and it comes with a new 12-60mm kit lens that I've been trying out and it's fantastic. I'd wait for that. If you don't mind the weight or not being able to shoot 4K, the T6i is a good choice, too. It doesn't have the same dual-pixel CMOS that the 70D/80D do that make those so good at focusing. But it's going to be better at photos than the G7/G85 and it has more lens options for the future. But if pure video quality is your aim, the Panasonic platform is going to be better.

    • @noadsaregoodads
      @noadsaregoodads 8 лет назад

      I have been looking at the Canon EOS M5 as alternative to my solution, but that damn lcd screen is such a turn off. I could deal with 1080 @ 60fps instead of 4k, but the that screen tho.. What were they thinking? Anyways, I pre-ordered the G85 and I cant wait! Thanks for your opinion man

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      Joe Kostka Yeah, M5 seems promising, but you'd also have been limited in lens options until they grow that a little more. I think you'll enjoy the G85 once you get the focusing dialed in. Be sure to check out my G7 Vlogging Settings video to help you get started!

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      How you see yourself in the mirror is reversed from how the rest of the world sees you (i.e. your hair actually parts the opposite way). I.e. all the text in the mirror is backwards. If the camera shot that way, then everywhere you went, you couldn't read any of the text and everything else would be reversed.

    Some guys are pretty disappointed from the G7 autofocus capabilities. 80D beats the G7 hands down. But it's far more expensive and pretty heavy. I wished the autofocus was a bit better on the G7...

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  8 лет назад

      +hellomyphone Lens makes a big difference, too. The focusing with the Pansonic 12-35/2.8 is MUCH better than the kit lens. Obviously a lot more money for that, but I wonder if even some of the other cheaper lenses would still be better. The Dual Pixel CMOS on the 70D/80D is a game-changer. No one's touching that until they do something similar. But, like you said, comes with a cost too in the weight and cost.

    Thanks for your video but i just bought this camera and it is a waste of time as it has no video stabilization and you end up with a shaky mess walking anywhere and shooting with it. The last 6 or so vids on my channel are a disaster. A sony 4k x3000 action cam is a far better bet as it has perfect inbuilt stabilization and much cheaper.Whats your opinion mate? Only a gimble or a very expensive lens with stabilization can fix this g7..

      I did 160ish VLOGs with the G7 and I can't recommend getting a gorillapod enough. Really helps stabilize it and you learn how to help cushion it. But even the G85 with IBIS can't take out the shake of walking - it's just too much for anything but a motorized gimbal, but I don't think you have to. You definitely learn over time on how to help do it with your arms and a gorillapod to make it fine for watching. The wider the lens, the less you notice it, too.

    dont blame camera if you suck at setting settings :) camera focus center unless you set it to not focus to center. :) Anyways 4k good not just for 4k - but you have WAY more space to crop your videos, reframe them. And last but not least - downscaling to Full HD gives u MUCH better fullHD quality then native fullHD.
    Im researching cameras whole month already and so far for money - Panasonic G7 is THE BEST. Second if need for traveling - LX100. For photos and plus videos - Samsung NX1. :) And of course the best is Sony A7R II, but costs a lot.
