During the early 2000s, real-time strategy games were booming. From Blizzard and Westwood’s fantastical machinations, to Creative Assembly and Ensemble Studios’ historical excursions, the genre had a game in almost every style and setting conceivable - and they were all consistently great.
Yet of all these games, few offered as wide a scope as Stainless Steel Studios’ inaugural title, Empire Earth. The brainchild of Rick Goodman, who had previously helped conceive Age of Empires during Ensemble’s infancy, Empire Earth allowed players to embark on a tour of human history the likes of which had never been seen before, one that started at the dawn of human civilization, ended in the far-flung future, and offered an unparalleled level of customizability the entire way through.
While it wouldn’t prove the most prolific game of this era, it would have no trouble finding an audience willing to evangelize it, as well as continue to support it once expansions and sequels would start arriving from a new developer, Mad Doc Software. But almost as soon as Mad Doc would show itself mostly capable of living up to the high bar set by Stainless Steel, it would irreparably corrupt the series’ formula - scaring off its fan base, and sending it into a slumber from which it has yet to wake.
This is a story about an improbable real-time strategy series, and all that was great about it. Yet this is also a story about the importance of balancing one’s desire to branch out and reach new audiences, and keeping true to what it is that people came to love about one’s work in the first place.

I love how Empire Earth III basically showed what not to do with you game and fanbase and then Dawn of War III basically did the exact same thing. Studios, it's simple; when you have a franchise that works and is appealing to a dedicated fanbase, trying to make it have "mass appeal" is going to be the disillusionment and death of said dedicated fanbase.
Speaking of which, "The Rise and Fall of Dawn of War" would be a fitting follow up to this video.

When I was in university, every Friday, we would go to the CS labs and install Empire Earth on the computers and play on the LAN till dawn. We became highly competent at the game. During the summer some of our core members were away so i decided to train some noobs. After they had learned the basics I announced that we were going to play a real competitive game, the two noobs against me. I quickly scouted them out and realized that they were focusing on building their economy and were not exploring. I went 100% economy. They both hit the bronze age and decided to go all military, they both build pop cap sized armies and marched on my position. They understood that they outnumbered me 2:1 their excitement (and shit talking) grew as they began to believe they could actually defeat me. Half way to my base strange shadows began moving across the land followed by a score of mushroom clouds rising out of their ranks.
That remains the single most satisfying experience I have ever had in a video game.

Empire Earth was the first game I ever got from my father. He couldn't buy me a lot of games since he died when I was young. This title will always be in my heart, I played it literally for years and it will be forever installed on my PC. The campaigns were super satisfying and the multiplayer was just breathtaking. You could create clans, add/remove members, friend and unfriend certain players, play together, against each other, against AI and so on. Different strategies were needed for different epochs, and the most popular modes were only allowing 1 epochs and focusing on battles in that given era. Peace Time was also a thing, so if you were slower at building your armies you could still enjoy playing if it was set by the lobby leader. Otherwise rushes were allowed and was a common strategy by many players. Here you said that the voice acting was not that great in Empire Earth, but I want to point it out that this game was released in other languages as well, with completely native voice acting as well. I'm from Hungary and the Hungarian voice acting is just freaking amazing, I still recall most of the iconic lines and even some casual unit's lines as well. This was the first ever online game where I was part of a community, made friends from all around the globe, became a member of a clan, played almost competitively against other clans and also played for fun against other people. The skill gap in this game was huge among players. I remember that I was pretty good in the Middle Ages, but couldn't win a single match in Industrial Age. Different epochs, different nations, different buffs, units and strategies. It made the game unique and challenging. The fact that it had its own social hub was the best thing for me. When they shut down their online servers, I literally cried for days and I still remember the sadness that I felt as a child. There were attempts of bringing back to life the multiplayer hub, but eventually the players lost interest in trying to resolve all the bugs and issues that came with alternative solutions. Everyone should give this game a go. Google NeoEE and you will find how you can still play it.

@@6StimuL84 Yeah I know but it is generally older PC gamers that sing its praise. I think it was just the timing of it's release. PC gaming wasn't huge then and I know a lot of console gamers who have never heard of it and why would they when you had Resident Evil, Final Fantasy and Silent Hill landing block busters then. I know the first one did alright in sales but i don't think it's ever been stellar in selling copies or we would have had more than four games in what like 20 years+ (Excluding remasters).

I remember coming home from school and jumping into online matches almost every day. At one point I was in the top 10 on the leader board for a few days. I really want to pick it back up again, it's been a couple of years. It's such a damn shame the direction that EE3 took. It could have been the best RTS ever made.

This is a good example that sometimes we put too much pressure on some really nice games, we say "its good, but not as good as... age of empires 2" but we have to consider that age of empires 2 is really unique, even AoE 3 which was a nice game was treated too harshly. After a while we dont have RTS, we have a lot of 4X games, a few grand strategy paradox like, a few anno like but we killed the RTS genre
