Firstly thank you Johann for a good profile! Secondly here is a fix for everyone who is using a DSLR that does not support NP3 (Tested with NP2 camera). Add your camera model: Open up the Picture control software after install. Top left you need to select your product (Camera model), click the dropdown and select Add product. Product category should say "Digital SLR Cameras", in "Product" dropdown on the right you should pick your model, for example D500, this supports NP2. Click "Add" Your camera model should now be visible in the list below, click your camera name and press "OK" Now to import Jakes profile that you have downloaded: Back in the main program window, press "Imports custom Picture Control from file", it's the folder and arrow symbol on the bottom left in the main program window. Locate the file you downloaded, called J-LOG, select it and press "Open". It should now load and be present at the bottom of the Picture Control selection box above the "Imports custom Picture Control from file" button. Select it by clicking once on it. Now, to save it to a file your camera can read you need to create a file with the same settings. Sounds simpler than it is, but it's actually very easy, just a few clicks! When the picture control profile has been selected you can view it's properties on the right side of the program window, it says "Histograms", "Adjustments", "Quick Adjust" etc. At the bottom of those settings there is a button called "Add to list" (bottom left of main program window), click it once. A new window opens, give it a name, it will suggest a new name, you can accept that and change the name in camera later. Press "OK" There should now be a new profile under it with the new name, for me it was "J-LOG-02" and to the right it should have the file format your camera supports instead of NP3. Now select this profile by clicking on it once. Insert your memory card from your camera, it does NOT need to be formatted (at least not for me on my D500). In the Picture Control software main window press "Save to Card". This will save the file into the correct folder and create it if it does not exist. And then follow the instructions for your specific camera on how to import the file, it should now be visible (follow video). I hope this helped, happy shooting!
I have found that an easy way to create a cinematic LOG profile 'look' on a Nikon camera; mine is the D7500 (you can probably do this on other brands too) is to simply select the 'Set Picture Control' from the shooting menu; Select FLAT, then go into the fine tuning section by pressing right on the D-Pad. This brings up all the parameters, simply experiment by lowering all the values to the left (minus values) for the Sharpening, Clarity, Contrast, Brightness, Saturation & Hue, then hit the OK button and you have a very flat image to work with.
Great idea...however without the Ninja V you're still recording in 8-bit. You really need 10-bit to take advantage of the tonal compression factor that log profiles create. In 8-bit you can expand some of the colors (but you sacrifice others in the process). The only thing better than 10-bit is ProRes at 12-bit (or shoot on an Arri at 14-bit.
A Huge Thanks for you Johann. You are the real youtuber those help others. You are not to be one those sell everything of photography product on the chaneel
Hi Johann, thanks for sharing! I installed the picture profile on my Nikon D810, and it worked. Wow - thats very flat, indeed. Even better: this Log-Profile allows me to transform the Nikon D810 footage into Aces Colorspace in Davinci Resolve and get it very close colorwise to the look of my Panasonic Lumix S1H. Okay, the Nikon is 6 years old and has HD only at 420 8Bit 20 MBit/sec, and low light comes not even close to the S1H, and there is no IBIS at all, and the glasses are focus-breathing like hell - but, if you are out for stills with the old beast and something comes across worth getting captured as film - then you will get the best out of it.
@@anonschoch1494 Hi Anon, I am not sure how familiar you are about using ACES as both color space and workflow in Davinci Resolve. Anyway, whenever you work in DR and use ACES as color space, the first thing you need to do after importing clips is to tell Davinci (under ACES) which IDT (Input Device Transform) should be applied to transform the camera clips into ACES. Most camera manufacturers provide the IDT for working with NLEs. This is somewhat similar to working in any other color space in RR (e.g. Rec709 or Arri Logc) and using a CST-node at eht beginning of your node tree. Hope that helps.
Loved this and have downloaded your J LOG. Thanks Bru! Quick question: have you created a ‘conversion LUT’ that you apply to your J LOG footage? If so, it’d be a massive time saver for anyone, like me, who has benefited from your J LOG 😊
I precisely came out of BH PHOTO disappointed at the Atoms Ninja & memory card price tags. You tip is much much much appreciated! Subscribed!! Thanks!!!!
Thanks for your work! I´m not really advanced in color grading but have some experience. I tried your picture style in comparison to Nikon Flat on a Z6 at ISO 1600 and the result was: at the first glance the whole footage was brighter and so there was notably more noise at J-Log. When I reduced brightness to the same level there was a bit more noise at J-Log but the white parts have been much less bright, what we want. When I didn´t correct with brightness but with gamma to the same brightness there was at J-Log only a little bit more noise and the dynamic was much better. The white parts have been notably less white/bright. So in total, after a first try, a progress regarding Nikons Flat. Thanks.
How to install the picture profile instructions: 1- Connect a memory card to your computer and format it:. 2- Create a folder on the card and name it NIKON . 3- Create another folder called CUSTOMPC within the NIKON folder you previously made. Drag the file you downloaded into that CUSTOMPC folder. 4- Eject card and put into your Nikon. 5- Under the Shooting menu, select Manage Picture Control > Load/Save > Copy To Camera. Enjoy
FYI/PSA - for thoes of you who might be having the same issue i had, don't try and use the SD card on your z6ii to download the profile. It will ONLY work when using your xqd/cfx card to transfer the file to camera. BTW, huge thanks for the free profile my man!!!
Two important things that these kind of videos assume that the viewers already know, is the importance of Exposure and lighting. No matter which editor/picture profile/ log setting you use. If your image is not properly exposed and illuminated then no picture profile or log will save you. Yes this sounds really basic but so many people make mistakes while setting the exposure and lighting for the scene and then expect the editing software to save the footage just because the camera operator has chosen to use a log or flat picture profile setting (that is a wrong expectation on the camera operators part). Make sure you use all the exposure tools such as histograms and if available, waveforms and vector scopes, and expose to the right as long as you are not clipping highlights (For moving scenes where lighting is changing, consider using a good quality variable ND filter to adjust the highlights on the fly). And try not to challenge the dynamic range of the camera and just light up the scene properly. And you should be fine.
Thank you for the video! Very entertaining and impressive too! Just wondering whether if you could make a comparison video of perhaps J-Log vs N-Log vs Flat Profile etc.? Thanks again!
Cool! Your skin tones are impressive. Hey...... How about a video on post editing on footage recorded in "J-LOG",; the LUT you use and your color grading... Thanks for the insight!

Even though I can't use Log on my Nikon D850, I found your video very entertaining. Keep up the good work and keep that unusual sense of humor sharp and funny.
Hey Johann, thanks heaps for this!! I'm new to filming and was - like you - disappointed to see the Nikon Z6II doesn't have a log profile. Do you also have a LUT? Any help with that is much appreciated too!

@@jessicahaydahlrichardson7951 Hey there, apologies for the late reply! In terms of your question to saturation, I usually bring it back with the Hue saturation adjustment in the curves tab, also the lowered contrast saps a lot of saturation out, so adding in a nice tone curve will help as well :) I might do a colour grading tutorial soon!
Hey man... Thanks for this. I have almost zero filmmaking skills but I am trying my best to learning all techniques to create a 'one man army' short movie during lockdown. Really appreciated!
Thanks for the great video and the free log profile! One question, when you adjusted the profile in Nikon Picture Control Utility, did you adjust the sharpness output? I think Nikon cameras automatically add some sharpness, but I would like that turned off completely. I saw that the EOSHD Z-Log profile(can be purchased for $30 online) claims that they have that feature turned off in their custom log profile, but I don’t want to pay for that if I can do it myself in the Picture Control Utility. TIA
You can just import the the .np3 file in nikon picture control, and there you can see that Sharpness is set to 0. But I guess you already figured that out yourself. I'm quite a novice when it comes to video editing, and I prefer Davinci Resolve. The added "value" of the EOSHD Z-Log profile is that they also provide the accompanying LUT.
Humourous AND informative? Didn't even think that could be possible. We at the Dandy Show can barely accomplish one of those two things. Also who's that Damon guy he looks like a total unit.
i have tried your profile j-log and i like it ! but to see a variant, i took portrait profile and took your curve. i find skin is little better..what do you think of that did you tried it?
Awesome tip. FYI for anyone on a Mac do not try this in the Big Sur Beta. Johann I was just like you I want a Ninja V but my wallet said hell No. Thanks again and you just got a new Subscriber!!!
I just tried to download J-log after subscribing and signing up for the newsletters, but to no avail. It’s locked. Am I doing something wrong? Excited to try this out on my Z6. Thanks.
So, I created the folders in a formated xqd card, but when I put the card and try to load the profile, the camera says that there is no profile to be loaded. Any idea why?
you should invest into a z lens…that noise at the end of your video…you will love the silent motors in the new z series lens…thanks for the video…have fun creating…and being young..enjoy those younger years!
Hey man this works great, thanks for putting this together. That being said, it works fine in 1080p 60fps, put when I shoot 4k 60fps (Nikon Z6ii) I am getting a very strange blown out/glitch video image. Replays fine on the camera but not on my computer. Have you seen that?
Thanks great video 📹 How do I have to record correctly with your log? Do you have to exposure on 0 or do I have to record one over 0 like on the fuji xt3?
Thanks, i am using your picture profile since 2 months ago and i have improved the quiality of my color. Only I would like to know if you could to share a LUT which makes a "fast work" to correct the flat mode. I owe you one anyway!
Hey man, not sure if you can still read this but, do you happen to have an NCP version of the LOG? I have a much older camera that only uses NCP whereas the one you have is a NP3 file. Is highly appreciated if you happen to have it. Either way, thanks and love this insightful and funny video!
@@isaaclee2003 I set the profile to flat, then I turned the sharpening to Zero, turned the contrast all the way down, set the brightness up, set saturation all the way down. That gives me a log profile for my Nikon Z50.
Hey man, loving the picture profile! Been using it a few weeks now. Do you have a Log to rec.709 lut for the profile? Just want to see before I try and make one myself haha
As it's not exactly a log curve I think it's already a - very flat - picture profile already recorded in 709 (as the other pp). Haven't tried it yet but used the flattened flat so far and it allows to squeeze some more dynamic range compared to the standard or even the neutral pp. All in all I've tried the flat with the d lighting on all theevels from low to super hight and it opens even more the shadows at the cost anyway of quite grainy mid and shadows (that you would have - even more than using the d light - if you would rise the levels in post on the 8bit quite compressed file internally recorded).
Not sure if you really explain what the lut is supposed to do since raw files isn't affected by it, also, how is it supposed to give more dynamic range when you cap the brightness at less than 90%!? Also, doesn't the lut just remap the "raw" color data when you capture an image and doesn't affect the capturing of the image?
Do wee have to download the Nikon app in order to open the picture profile or have to have a PC? I have a Mac and have been trying to load it into a Z5 but no luck.
Hey hey hey!!! I just bought my new Z6 today. And the guy over at the store said that this update to a log through XQD might ruin my WARRANTY. Is that true?
He may have taken it that you were trying to illegally update your camera to support 12bit Raw recording. However that is not what is being done here, this should not affect your warranty in any way to my knowledge. :)
Unfortunately The file you created (and kindly shared for download) is NP3 and won't work for ALL NIKON CAMERAS. Only for the newest. :( My nikon D750 only supports .NCP files for camera profiles.
Yes, Sony and Canon have LOG. But the truth is that LOG makes no sence at 8Bit and an higly compressed codecs. This log files (e.g. on a Sony A7III) looks only a little bit like files from pro cameras but they are not :D My advice if you like to film in 8Bit log use a LOG profile that is not too flat at all.
@@sottosopra4769 i use mostly the flat profile on the Z6 when i shoot internally ... i had in the past an external cine log profile from eoshd.com on my camera but it turned out that the Log was too flat for the 8bit image of the Z6. 10Bit log via ninja v is a totally different story.
Really thank for helpful video, It's work on Z6 & 7 and I tired to put it on Nikon D750, but It's not supported. cos D750 can't support with NP3 file could you convert that file to NCP
I managed to convert it in Picture Utility 2, you need to choose the Nikon D750 as the camera you're saving to. Import the J-Log NP3 file, copy the settings and export as NP2.
It's a nice idea, but you won't be able to gain much by doing this. Probably quite the opposite.
When you invert the luma curve in profile builder, you lower mid-tone contrast without gaining much dynamic range. You can only lower saturation linearly, which is not a good idea too. When it's time to normalize it, you will get more banding and artifacts because of the 100mb/s limitation in 4k.
From my own tests, the best thing for Nikon's internal recording is to shoot everything in neutral with dialed down sharpness and -1 to contrast and saturation. I avoided flat profile because it also removes mid-tone contrast, and skin tones have a weird pinkish color.

You are a rock star for this one Johann!
Ey, thanks for this!
Was hoping you could also publish one for DSLRs like the Nikon D7500!
😍😍😍
What is the best way to expose for this color profile in your opinion? Overexpose or under?
This video was 1. Very helpful 2. Creative and 3. Funny! Please keep it up, really enjoyed your work!
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it! I hope some can get a little laugh out of it at the least!
@@JohannBeute hello sir could please give j log to me
This video is awesome! Big thanks for the log! This will help me. I will surely support your channel so don't stop creating more contents!
Humourous AND informative? Didn't even think that could be possible. We at the Dandy Show can barely accomplish one of those two things. Also who's that Damon guy he looks like a total unit.
I don't know who that Damon dude is, but he sure did help out a whole lot!
Thanks you so much, you don’t know how much you have helped me!!!!!
Hey Johann thx for sharing,I tried it with a Nikon z6 ii, unfortunately it didn't work, does the tip only work with a z6?
I JUST installed the log on my Z30, can't wait to use and see the editing. Btw, can you choose the log for raw photos too?
i have tried your profile j-log and i like it ! but to see a variant, i took portrait profile and took your curve. i find skin is little better..what do you think of that did you tried it?
Awesome tip. FYI for anyone on a Mac do not try this in the Big Sur Beta. Johann I was just like you I want a Ninja V but my wallet said hell No. Thanks again and you just got a new Subscriber!!!
Thanks, I'm using the log well.
Have you heard of the Similaar Flaat profiles? I'm trying to find these as my Nikon doesn't shoot LOG unfortunately
Hey. I just want to thank you because of your log I was able to create the awesome look of my show. It really is great and happy to shoot with it.
you should invest into a z lens…that noise at the end of your video…you will love the silent motors in the new z series lens…thanks for the video…have fun creating…and being young..enjoy those younger years!
Looks like you’re new and this video is dope! I’m along for the ride
Thank you for the support, I'll remember this since pre -100 subs! 😀
Getting the same strange behavior
Great!
And what about gammut?
If you shoot in log, you need wide color space
Thank You so much! Obviously very practical and useful content from your channel- Instant subscribe!
Thanks great video 📹 How do I have to record correctly with your log? Do you have to exposure on 0 or do I have to record one over 0 like on the fuji xt3?
You are a really good story teller
thanks for the video! I just couldn't download the J-log image. Would you help me? thanks
Awesome man!!!! I love the profile picture that you made. And I keep the name because my name also start with J hahaha.
Thanks, i am using your picture profile since 2 months ago and i have improved the quiality of my color. Only I would like to know if you could to share a LUT which makes a
"fast work" to correct the flat mode. I owe you one anyway!
The file does not apear on my memory card, when I try to install it it says that there are no custom log file
on memory card! im using Mac, help
Thanks a Lottttt Johann... I've been struggling a lot....and you cane as a savior...Hats Off !!
Hey man, not sure if you can still read this but, do you happen to have an NCP version of the LOG? I have a much older camera that only uses NCP whereas the one you have is a NP3 file. Is highly appreciated if you happen to have it. Either way, thanks and love this insightful and funny video!
i love the ending
Wow this was really well done, you deserve more subs. So much attention to detail and amazing footage too!
Super informative and super funny! Thank you so much!!!
ya YEET
Your Deity V Mic D3 Pro sounds extremely clean recording into Zoon H1n. I'm getting a lot of noise using the Deity V Mic D3 Pro into my Nikon Z50.
hey did u get the picture profile to work on your z50 by any chance? I did all the same steps on my z50 and the j-log does not appear
@@isaaclee2003 I set the profile to flat, then I turned the sharpening to Zero, turned the contrast all the way down, set the brightness up, set saturation all the way down. That gives me a log profile for my Nikon Z50.
@@QualityVideoService thank you!
Hey man, loving the picture profile! Been using it a few weeks now. Do you have a Log to rec.709 lut for the profile? Just want to see before I try and make one myself haha
Sadly I haven't created one, I should probably do that hey! All the best shooting 👍🏼
Dope! I bet you’re going to be successful soon!
Thank you for share this is what I was looking for and I’m so excited to try it on my Z6
As a non billionaire person, I looked for a solution, so, a BIG thanks from France ! :)
thanks for the video and the LOG , will definitely give your LOG a shot
Not sure if you really explain what the lut is supposed to do since raw files isn't affected by it, also, how is it supposed to give more dynamic range when you cap the brightness at less than 90%!?
Also, doesn't the lut just remap the "raw" color data when you capture an image and doesn't affect the capturing of the image?
Do wee have to download the Nikon app in order to open the picture profile or have to have a PC? I have a Mac and have been trying to load it into a Z5 but no luck.
Thanks Johann this was really useful! Had to go out and buy a card reader just for this :) Your log is really good!
Good day. I tried double email and i cannot download it . I checked also spam . Many thanks is u can send this jlog to me
thnx for the j- log! I try it out
You are awesome for making this. Thank youuuuu!
I can't wait to own z6 n add J-Log. Great video
Thanks. Btw nikon could've just made an update for z6 users so we could record a 10bit nlog
Subscribed based of this one video. Thanks for sharing
I cant make this work for my z6ii.
What can i do?
Same issue here, any help?
Just did it. I've put the file in the root directory on the memory card.
@@JohannBeute Thank you!!!
Unfortunately The file you created (and kindly shared for download) is NP3 and won't work for ALL NIKON CAMERAS. Only for the newest. :( My nikon D750 only supports .NCP files for camera profiles.
Haha. You are a very funny, creative and intelligent guy 😄
Great video Johann! Enjoyed it all the way! Gonna try it out on the z50!
Does it work as i got my z50 about 2 weeks ago i believe
Does in work? I wanna buy z50 and would love to have this profile :)
@@chiaracipolloni5062 Yes it works on the z50!
@@Isaypreach It works well on the Z50.
Hi Patrick, I don t have money for ninja v at the moment.... Can u advice internal log profiles? Thanks
Were you able to convert that file on your own? I’d love to try in on my d750, but I’m not sure if I’m able to convert the file to NCP
I managed to convert it in Picture Utility 2, you need to choose the Nikon D750 as the camera you're saving to. Import the J-Log NP3 file, copy the settings and export as NP2.
