    Pro tip - equalize the volume on your intro jingle and the rest of the video. The intro is regularly significantly louder than the rest of your content.
    I say this in love.

    I bought a new Durango and really enjoy it. I’ve never had to take it to dealer. Just change oil, rotate tires and gas it up.
    High marks for FCA quality. The Durango handles more like a spots sedan. I’ve owned 14 Ford SUV and now I prefer Dodge.
    Great styling , large cargo capacity and rear wheel drive. Good review.

      I love the Durango’s too, and they are very reliable. I FCA quality still isn’t the best and I would stay away from certain FCA products.

    Great review. I purchased a 2019 GT a couple of weeks ago and thus far I'm very happy with it. I'm cheap so I didn't get the RT version which I initially second guessed. However, the V6 is surprisingly peppy. Otherwise it's been the perfect vehicle. I have a wife, a son and two large dogs (one of them is a huge Newfoundland) and needed an SUV that could comfortably accommodate everyone for a somewhat lengthy drive up to the lake on summer weekends. My previous vehicle was a Jeep Grand Cherokee and while it was an excellent SUV, it just wasn't quite big enough for a long drive with all five of us packed in.
    Aside from roominess, very impressed with the handling and performance of the vehicle. The rear wheel drive definitely contributes to the vehicle feeling more responsive and was in my opinion superior to the other vehicles I took out for a test drive (Traverse, Explorer). For anyone that wants an SUV on the larger side but doesn't want to pay the exorbitant price of a Tahoe, I'd recommend taking a long look at the Durango.

    Alex, I've watched all your Durango reviews and it's no surprise you bought it. Your enthusiasm during the driving experience was obvious. In this age of watered down, fwd based, turbocharged lifted crossovers, the Durango is a breath of fresh air.
    Based on the Mercedes GL with an x frame, the Durango is a solid feeling and driving vehicle with the option for a traditional V8 and RWD. Sure, the other watered down fwd crossovers sell better (explorer, Highlander, etc), but the Durango has a feel and ride that none of those other appliances can touch or replicate.
    Great choice! This is the most underrated vehicle that FCA makes BY FAR. If it had a Jeep badge, it's sale would increase 3x.

      I don't think the Durango is based on the Mercedes GL. It, and most all Chrsyler/Dodge offerings (minus the new Pacifica Minivan and Ram trucks) are based on an old Mercedes E-Class platform from 2 or 3 generations ago (circa early 2000s).

      alliejr clearly states Mercedes GL in the article. It's not just a jacked up charger/e class. The grand Cherokee is based on the shorter ML.

      Well so far so good. It's been almost 2 months with no issues. It is hands down the most enjoyable SUV to drive that we have owned. The drivetrain and handling is wonderful even with the base V6 that we opted for. Hopefully the long term reliability is there too. It will be hard to be much worse than the 2014 Pathfinder that preceded it. Something broke on that car every other week.

      I have a 2016 Citadel v6. Loooovvveee this car. I have a grin every time I drive it. 40k miles and I’ve only needed oil change. My car sends me email on how it’s doing. It gets boring because it just tells me that everything is ok. Except for that one time the tire pressure got a little low. I want the SRT but it only comes in 6 passenger. I need 7 seats for my family of 7.

    Excellent and interesting as usual, Alex. I think your review highlights a couple of points. First, there is no such thing as the "best" vehicle in any particular category. Individual needs and priorities make all the difference. Second, choosing a vehicle almost always means prioritizing specific features and being willing to accept some less desirable aspects of that choice. Kudos for your objectivity in analyzing yours.

  • @thatsomefyi
    @thatsomefyi 6 лет назад +4

    It's nice to see a car reviewer being objective on what he says. You take all things into consideration in your reviews, it may work for some it may not work for others instead of trying to make like everyone has to agree with your opinions.
    And you brought that idea to your own personal choice, even the Durango being an aging offering it doesn't mean it's that bad at all.

      Contrast this glowing review of the 2018 Durango with the hammering he gave the recent Sequoia "dinosaur", primarily because the Sequoia has gone much too long without a complete redesign. We love our 2014 Sequoia, in large part because it tows really well even though the infotainment system doesn't whip out a decent espresso. ruclips.net/video/HshirImZxi0/видео.html

    I owned a 2000 Dodge Durango for 15 years, it was a wonderful vehicle and I miss it to this day. We had the transmission rebuilt at 130k miles. Other than that and the standard replacement of break pads, rotors and 1 hub replacement, it never gave us any major issues. The 4.7l motor ran like a champ the entire time we owned it. It was an amazing vehicle for my family.

    I’m happy for you Alex. I’ve always felt the Durango to be an underdog (with Mercedes DNA) and so you pointed out intelligent reasons why this model is right for you. We had a previous generation Durango for 10 years and although it was a different architecture, it served us well. We replaced it with a 2013 8 Spd. 5.7L Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 which for us once again has been great with just regular maintenance, great UConnect system, AWD transfer case and cylinder deactivation that recently help us achieve a round trip mpg from our city (Edmonton) through the Rocky Mountains with 2 kayaks in the box and luggage/gear in 2nd that was 26.5 (10.7 L/100 km).

    Bought a 2020 Dodge Dakota GT AWD last weekend. The v6 is great! Also got the tow package. At 1230 miles, the fuel economy was 25mpg on I-5. From Lancaster to San Francisco. In a couple of days I will go down Skyline drive to Hwy 9. Down through Felton to Santa Cruz. Will head down hwy 1to hwy 46. Back over to the I-5 and back to Lancaster.
    So far the travel has been very comfortable. So much so, that I may drive it more than planed. I bought it to complement my wife's 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L Cummins. And my 2016 Ram 1500 Quadcab 4wd 3.0L Ecodiesel. The power is fine. I drove over hwy 152 Pacheco Pass with a very strong head wind. Speed Control was at 65mph, and the speed was 65mph all the way past Casa de Fruita.

    I purchased the same exact model for my wife and we don’t tow. I just liked the looks, the presence on the road and how smooth it actually drives. Drove the vehicle from NJ to IL and it did well on gas, especially at speeds of 90 mph. 2 years owning it and not one issue.

    Congrats on building your own house. We did that too. Literally. We dug the foundation and septic ourselves (with a rented back hoe) and everything from there on up was done by me and my wife. Bricks, framing, electric, plumbing, roofing, paint, the whole works. Also a three car detached garage and a small barn and a couple outbuildings. We did it all with a gnarly old 1965 GMC 3/4 ton long bed step side pickup (yep, step side long bed). We always laugh when someone tells us they "built their own house," only to find out that they had everything done by contractors. Oh, but they worked hard picking out the paint colors!

    Yesterday I bought a new 2018 SXT Blacktop AWD for $35K out the door. Dealer trying to clear the lot. One thing I learned after buying it and reading the manual, and what the salesman didn't know, is that without the factory installed tow package this car will only tow 3500 lbs. Fortunately, that's pretty much the max we will tow, but I was partially drawn in by the promise of 6200 lbs. Oh well, still really like it.

    Hi Alex, I'm curious why you don't include reliability in your vehicle reviews? Quite frankly for me (and many other consumers) reliability is one of the most important factors in my purchase decisions.

    • @chriss1757
      @chriss1757 4 года назад

      He doesn't keep them long enough. Dodges, and other vehicles with low reliability records, are more popular with people who do not keep them beyond the warranty that they are among people who buy used or drive the vehicle well beyond the warranty period.

      I would be curious. I’m honestly maybe just lucky, or my quality metrics are different. I buy mainly used, with Ford, Mazda, and Chrysler products.
      I’ve driven several Chryslers to over 200k miles before the rust got them; just being diligent with oil changes and basic maintenance. My Commander had annoying stuff (alternator, battery) but has been fine and it’s 14 years old now. Now at 190k the tranny might be slipping.
      The Intrepid I had was 200k and at the end the bottom end started to show cracks, and at 100k I had to get tie rod ends replaced. Still ran fine.
      Other than that they were great cars.
      All My other keeps were 200k milers and beyond (ZJ at 240K before rust got her). The Ford was 200k. The NA Miata is my joy and she’s fine but for some little things (slave cylinder).
      I’m a little skeptical now admittedly because when I’ve drilled down into some quality reports sometimes you see things like “infotainment system slow” not “transmission failed”.

    I’m really impressed with the 3.6/ZF 8 speed combo. My last car search I test drove several and while the 3.6/8 speed isn’t the most tech savvy or torquey combination it seems always to deliver smooth power across the power band, with impressive stats. I regularly get 31 on the freeway with my 300 and the thing is over 4000lbs.

    I was very impressed with this Durango. I rented a Citadel and got about 26 MPG on a roadtrip from PA to Detroit and back, going about 70. Very quiet and even with those huge 20" wheels the ride was still very comfortable. The only things I didn't like were the cheap interior, poor visibility and the Alpine stereo was WAY too much bass.

Lots of space, the 3.7,4.7.5.7 great engine options, etc. I hope one day i can find something I love as much. This durango is nice. But, I like having a bench middle seat. I love that in floods, 32"of snow, and 10 years...never had a single major issue. maybe a couple of hick ups in the first year with sofeware flashes etc. but nothing will probably give me a sense of safety, and enjoyment like my Jeep Commander...

    I have to admit it. Dodge’s center shifters are one of the best shifters I’ve ever seen. In some cars, the shifter is designed in a way in which you have to clench it in a sideways fist. Here you can shift with an upright fist. In my opinion I think that would be a more comfortable position for me if it is for anyone. I also like how it looks like a bottom of a golf club. I mean I don’t play golf, but I like the shape of it.

    Still love my 14 Durango RT AWD! It really is the best Suv\Cuv available with the most capability, features and bold aggressive looks under 50-60k. And mine has not had any real issues in the 4 years I have had it other than numerous software updates. It is a total blast to drive! 0-60 in 5.7 secs is exactly what I get all the time too. That is pretty quick for a 3-row suv that weighs over 5k lbs! Yes it is faster than the Explorer Sport. I have raced a few. And its at least as fast as the Tahoe RST.
    Rear wheel biased AWD with a V8 is a great driving experience.
    Oh and I can use 87 octane gas just fine...
    FCA also offers a LIFETIME - Unlimited mileage warranty. Mopar Maxcare. I was able to get it for around $2k with a $100 deductibe. I'm set for life with my Durango!

    We thought about a Durango. Test drove the GT trim level. We bought a Honda instead. The dealer experience could not have been more opposite. We have a 2018 Ridgeline and could not be happier.

    Alex, now that you have bought your house and financially superior ( than days you have to sell your Volvo V70R), I'm only curious ( no negativity intended) why have you chosen the Durango over another Volvo (XC90 perhaps?)? Especial i know you have a soft spot for Volvos.

    I work at a Chevy dealership that deals a lot in used vehicles. As such, we see a lot of FCA products that come through as both trade-ins and off the auction. As much as I hate to admit it, I have an irrational love for FCA. Why? Because they hold up better (in my experience) than similar vehicles. The 3.6L V6 and 5.7L V8s are relatively bulletproof engines, and we've had plenty of vehicles that were beaten to shit on the outside by clearly irresponsible owners that still ran like a champ. We've had FCA trucks with over 300,000 miles come through that ran and drove perfectly fine, and the interiors held up miles better than GM and Ford trucks of similar vintage.
    We have a lot of trouble keeping FCA products on the lot. They get bought up relatively quickly. I really don't care what Consumer Reports says, because FCA has gotten much better under Fiat ownership. Daimler abused them like the unwanted 3rd child. Both Daimler and Chrysler suffered heavily under that horrible partnership, and it'd be better for the entire automotive world that it hadn't happened. But times are different now.

      The 3.6 is one of the least reliable engine on the market.

    • @OSTKCabal
      @OSTKCabal 6 лет назад +7

      benjaminwayneb I have real world evidence and experience that disputes that but alright. In addition to that, The Pentastar 3.6 is often considered one of the best V6s on the market. Perhaps getting a bit long in the tooth, sure, But unreliable? Naw.

    • @benjaminwayneb
      @benjaminwayneb 6 лет назад +1

      I'm a tech for a Police fleet with over 250 units, we are switching from Crown vics to Chargers and started off buying 3.6 engines. Every vehicles engine has had multiple repairs, cylinder heads repeatedly, lifters, camshafts, water pumps, oil coolers, oil pumps. The upper intake is attached using wood screws that screw directly into the plastic of the lower intake and after a few R & Rs the intake must be replaced because the screws won't tighten anymore. The head bolt threads in the block usually pullout about the third repair then the engine needs replacing. Most of these failures were while under warranty. We stopped buying 3.6's and switched to 5.7 L., not much better, lifter noises and lifter roller failure that destroys the camshaft. The valve train in the 5.7 doesn't do well with extended idling such as Police use. It was very rare to have a Ford 4.6 Crown Vic engine problem other then a water pump.

    • @OSTKCabal
      @OSTKCabal 6 лет назад +3

      Very few engines do particularly well under extended periods of idling, in the context of thousands and thousands of hours spent idling. Frankly, Crown Vics were kind of a fluke and there's a reason they were in service literally forever - Ford did something right.
      But my main point here is that normal civilian usage of these engines doesn't even remotely represent the extreme idling circumstances of police vehicles. As such, these engines really are generally reliable under normal everyday usage - which is the context I speak of given the fact that most people don't spend 8+ hours a day idling in their car.

    • @benjaminwayneb
      @benjaminwayneb 6 лет назад +1

      The 3.5 and 3.7 L. engine in the Explorer and Taurus don't have any issues with Police Use. I could understand if these problems occurred at higher mileage but that's not the case, the lifters in the 5.7 rattle almost every time you start the car from new and we were replacing 3.6 cylinder heads as low as 10,000 km.

    I cross shopped between a Highlander, Pilot, Durango and the Sorento, In the end. i went with the Sorento due to compact size, amazing refinement, and great dealer incentives. The highlander and Pilot was way more expensive (little dealer incentives as well) than the Sorento so they were out. It was between the Durango and the Sorento (both good incentives from the dealers). I love Durango so much but could not get it since it was so long that it would not fit in my single garage! In the end, it was your review of the Sorento that convinced me to get the Sorento.

    Alex, you should review the more practical V6 Durango for once! Always raving about the V8s :D

    • @Billfish57
      @Billfish57 4 года назад

      That's because most people that have owned trucks and used them know that the V8 is by far the better choice of engine. They can live a long life without breaking down because the labor for the engine is spread out over more cylinders and that is also nice for towing, you can get much better performance. The V6 has to work much harder to do the same job, so they might get better millage with an empty truck but once you start to pull a bunch of weight, that V6 is a dog and is going to have problems much sooner than the V8 will. I had a Chevy van with a 305 V8 that lasted me 23 years and 273000 miles without breaking down, not once was I on the side of the road for anything, not even a flat tire, although that was mostly luck, the V8 is made for trucks, the V6 turbo seems like a good idea and can be for some, but for a real working truck, the V8 is the way to go.

    Great news as it will last as long as you do!!!!! because if you buy any Chrysler Product from anyone ( Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or Ram) that is less than four years old and has less than 48,000 miles you can buy direct from a Chrysler a "Lifetime Warranty" with no limit on time or mileage, its like having a 3/36 warranty as long as you own the vehicle, yes it is expensive ( about 2K) but it that touchscreen goes out it just paid for itself, Hope this info helps

    The funny thing to me is that dodge can put a full spare and make their seats fold in the floor and have in floor truck storage but the land cruiser which is basically twice the price can’t do that.

    California also makes you register all trucks as commercial vehicles, insurance and registration are higher. Buying a SUV in this state cost a little less over the years. I was told on my truck I'd have to buy a carpet kit, and shell on it so it can be "livable" then I could register it as non-commerical.

    I notice this reviewer conveniently left out the best selling 3 row SUV the Ford Explorer. Its total legroom is 114.4. Can get it with a 365 HP twin turbo V-6 running on regular, better mileage and is faster to 60 than the V-8 with 360 HP. It also will tow 5000 lbs. The seats are also more comfortable.

      Mia Myers We currently have a 2017 SXT AWD with IV Trailer Tow Package - Standard V6 - it is a BEAST in the snow. We easily haul 12” EV’s, stands, amps, 10” monitors, an electronic drum kit, multiple tripods for cameras. In addition to live music, we also produce live streaming shows. The Durango has not let us down - we had remote start added due to cold New Hampshire winters. However, we’ve decided to take our shows further out on the road, all the way to SURPRISE Arizona where we just put a down payment on a 2018 R/T In-Violet V8 HEMI that was taken out of the showroom yesterday. Tired of the cold, we opted for RWD - the shear weight of unibody frame and V8 up front we trust will get us thru. We also haul a 21’ “Stage On Wheels” discovering talented singer/songwriters and supporting humanitarian nonprofits thru Arts4Humanity - A4H(tm). A not-for-profit social enterprise - reverbnation.com/jeffhayford - connect!
