I am an atheist and I don't believe any of the nonsense in Hinduism or any other religion. But I love Carnatic music and TMK is one of my favorite. I love the music, not the Rama, Krishna, or Govinda in it. Of course some people don't get it when I say this.
I don't understand jargon. I just understand that the quality of music which I grew up listening ( in the 60s-70s), does not exist now. I may be old fashioned and regressive. But I enjoy listening to old masters.
T M Krishna is following the herd of intellectuals who are ashamed of their own heritage, and go out of their way to prove their loyalty to pseudo secularists via Hindu bashing. In this sense, he is like Kamal Hassan. Both are very talented their respective arts, but have forayed into politics without the necessary skill and wisdom. T M Krishna's musings on society is left wing gibberish, which is why he got the Magsaysay award. His music, especially in his 20's, was bliss, and he is fully capable of holding audiences spellbound during his concerts.
I think this man krishna's discussion is always more about Brahmins & very less about music ; nobody knows what he's trying to convey ; nobody's stopping any non brahmin from learning carnatic music ; this discussion is not going to contribute anything to carnatic music ; it till only divide people & bring some hatred for carnatic music ; pl stop these irrelevant discussions & try to doscuss about various ragas , it's beauty & about the great composers & singers 👍👍
I just started watching this thinking that this is an interview with Mr TMK. It took the interviewer more than 3:30 minutes to let him say his first word here. I hope she will let him talk after this. What was her question again?
What is purity factor in the practice of Karnatic Music? The performer must have attained or at least achieved in 'moments of performance delivery the state of universal conscious, in self denial, the root of spiritualism; blemishless svarasthanas, clarity of words in lyrics, laya and kalapramana in rhythm; either offers 'discovered' or 'created' aesthetic-abstract, afresh, anew; conforms to lakshya and lakshana; all in full strengths or optimal delivers 'aha' moments of intellectual pleasure.
Though most classical arts struggle to get mass audience I think Carnatic music is the epitome of it. Any professional, be it in sports or arts, has to work hard to acquire and improve their skill, they express themselves to enthrall himself and his audience. A baby born into this world has no allegiance to any beliefs, systems etc., but family and society infuse these.
What a non-sensical discussion by two pseudo intellectuals! Krishna sings great! Why is he compelled to broadcast his half-baked ideas, I wonder! He says the word 'modern' brings "White" to his mind! No such silly ideas at least for me. I spoke to many people, no one thinks of "White", when they hear the word modern! Also, it shows clearly that both of them did not read any sanskrit literature and trying to discuss on 'Sanskriti'. Especially when Krishna says mridangam did not exist 2000 years ago, it shows his shallowness. If mridangam did not exisit 2000 years ago, why there are so many references everywhere in the ancient sanskrit literature, some of them much older than 2000 years. Now, if we bring up these references, they start saying "oh those terms mean different instruments!" -- Shallow defences again! To understand Bharatheeya vidyas one needs to be thorough in Sanskrit, Which I am sure these two individuals know nothing about! It is an irony that these characters are discussing at the Kerala Literature festival!
nagraj kota At least somewhere in the latter part of the blabber he admitted that he doesnt want all musicians to be aethists...Thank Krishna for that.
The problem is most Indians are enamored by anyone who can articulate well in English (the pseudo Oxbridge accent is a plus). We rarely ever examine their content with a critical eye.
Human civilization celebrates the intelligence in all human endeavors and senses of achievements in human experiences richer, continuum. 'Class' is identity creation for intellectual pleasure delivery and its recall pleasure, the play and exchange of clarity and abstractness; physical and metaphysical; struggle for freedom of expressions- unrestricted and controlled. Convention is the forms of both covert and overt agreements and disagreements. Spirit is for sense of order, secretive beauty in disorder, chaotic; individual conscious giving away to universal conscious. Humans discovered and created forms of powers for self gratification and self aggrandizement. Musical forms, including Karnatic Music, are instruments of power for influence and seeking. Power play exists. Art form practices and appreciation strives to meet both physical and metaphysical senses of security, privileges with inescapable guilt, shame in thinking and acting; in exclusions. Purity and divinity in art form practice is the immense potentiality for moments of self in unity with universal selves and in self abnegation, self denial, the most rewarding human experience. While all the other forms of music strives to give striking reality experiences, Karnatic Music strives to give abstract aesthetic experiences. The ease and comfort in gaining experiences in other forms of music gets identity of 'popular' mainly due to the reach, being the music for masses. The efforts required to gain experiences in art forms, with limited reach, gets the identity for 'elitist'. Human history of civilization stands the testimony to both the struggles and deliverance, making it most dynamic and great learning. Caring and sharing as mantra and real time practice of interested and committed individuals do act as both transformative, corrective and preventive actions.
it is not easy to accept Vid TMK's ideas. Tyagaraja clearly says music without bhakthi is not his cup of tea. Similarly Purandara dasa says, kelano hari talano, tala melagaliddu, premavillada gaana... adigadigananda bhashpa pulaka dinda, nade nudige sree hari ennuta....... I think music is a short cut to god realization, as mathematics is a short cut to understand economics (resulting in mathematical economics). Thus, music is the vehicle as mathematics is.
Really sad to see this absolute drivel. A little success and one suddenly thinks they have a huge social responsibility to rid Hindoos and Hindoo culture of all our ills. TM Krishna is a reasonably good musician and he thinks about music. But he really is out of his depth here, especially when led on by "bad company" in this video. These people have nothing else to do except bash NRIs, "power groups", and yes even PM Shri Narendra Modi gets bashed this interview (!) Please concentrate on "shastriya sangeet" in its unabashedly "traditional", "pure", "exclusive", "brahmanical" form. Stop worrying about things that do not really concern you at all. Running after these "liberal" coffee-table crowd will undo and waste your considerable talent. Use your brain and focus on doing what you know best. That will truly enrich our music.
Men and Women relationships are rooted and firmly based in baser instincts of pleasure and protection; give, take and denial modes, and also power plays of gross and subtle elements, be it social; political and religious lives of territorial-physical and psychological. Critical factors of beliefs, faiths and authority draw and derive on the strengths of images and identities of various hues and shades.
He is a talented singer and also an intelligent speaker

nagraj kota about 90 % of the interview is unadulterated bull-shit !!!!!
nagraj kota At least somewhere in the latter part of the blabber he admitted that he doesnt want all musicians to be aethists...Thank Krishna for that.
Gullible artiste being led on to talk nonsense by one of those "social crusaders" with the usual fake Oxbridge accent.

nagraj kota yes bro, mridangam came before human
