Product Info: We're in love...with a droid. No, really. Meet the Hero Droid BB-8 from Spin Master. As you probably know, this is an Astromech droid first seen in Star Wars: the Force Awakens as Poe Dameron's droid, entrusted with a map and who ends up with Rey fighting with the resistance.
This is one of the most technologically advanced, elegant responsive and well-made Star Wars toys we've seen, and that's saying a lot. More than that, though, this far surpasses most other robotic toys we've seen because it's designed, to put the play front and center. But the play goes way beyond simply making the droid move around, though it does that beautifully.
The real magic of this toy exists in the fact that the toy has so much personality built in that the imaginary relationship between the child (though we're guessing many of the purchasers would not strictly speaking be spoken of as children) and the droid becomes the central experience. This is the first time we've seen the interaction between human and droid so beautifully expressed in a toy.
Set up is easy, but you'll want to pay attention to the directions. You need to charge both the head and body units separately using the included cables. Once they're both charged up, turn them on. Be sure that the head, body and controller (which takes three triple-A batteries) are all set to the same frequency. (Yes, there are three, so if you're lucky enough you could have three of these running independently together.)
Now, all this incredible fun is going to set you back a little. BB8 has a suggested retail price of $229. However, this is one of those instances where we think the price, high as it is, is justified. The level of animation and interaction and the sense of life that kids will experience with this is truly amazing. We have to give Spin Master a lot of credit for putting in all the technology necessary to make the interaction so seamless and engaging. Not every toy company is willing to take that kind of a risk. But in this case, we think the risk more than paid off.

Awesome! It's super challenging but you'll learn a lot. Note that I spent around $236 so far and it doesn't have all the functionality of this commercially made one. But if you want the challenge and satisfaction of building your own then go for it. The engineering challenge is why I made mine.

My husband just got me one today and I love it!!!!! I have the Sephro BB8 as well and it’s hard for me to choose which one I like better but this one is very well made. I wish Spin Master would’ve had it set up to your phone like Sephros instead of having to carry a remote.

10MinuteReviews yeah, I know. I wanted to buy from the manufacturer just because it's the first release. If there are any issues, I know Spin Master will make sure I'm taken care of. They do that with their toys. I don't want to deal with other resellers. Although I did buy Sphero BB-9E brand new on eBay. I got it for much cheaper than $150 + tax.

One of the things that I love about this droid is that when BB-8 moves, it is far more stable in motion than Hasbro's version. That, plus the size, gives it a more authentic feel! I'm definitely torn between this one and Sphero's. Sphero's with Droid Trainer appears to be VERY BB-8 personality/motion wise and has a lot of features that can be accessed via the app, but on a far smaller scale than I would like. Meanwhile, this rendition - though it doesn't have all the app wise features - from Spin Master also seems to have those character traits down fairly well and is a larger model, which is A+ for me. Overall, I'm rather pleased with Spin Master's work here, and is definitely worth the price and is of better quality than it's Hasbro cousin.
the sphero BB-8 is totally unstable it rocks from side to side more than anything
David King But would you say of the three the sphero is better? I seem to see way more instability with Hasbro's for sure, but Spin Master is definitely better than Hasbro by the looks of it.
Nightfall She-Wolf I got the sphero and id say is was as bad as the Hasbro, I've only seen videos of the Hasbro but going by those I'd say they were as bad as each other, don't believe the sphero adverts as I did. This one though looks amazing 😁

I have so many questions and there are so few answers. It seems from TTPM that this is a Force Friday II item. Is it a store exclusive? Is it definitely a Force Friday toy, or is it just Episode VIII merch lumped in? I need to know if I have to stay up late tonight!!

Its amazing to me with all the technology Spin Master has at its command, Yet here they bring out just another spin off of low grade high priced trash They didn't even try to be great. Smh. The amazing part is not that they created it. But that they KNOW they can do better, and could easily have done so. With this track record. I see no reason to EVER buy anything from this company.
