- HD version: • Gilbert and George: No...
Arts series presented by Alan Yentob. Over the last 40 years, British artists Gilbert and George have fascinated, outraged, delighted and confounded the art establishment. Since their first appearance as 'living sculptures' in the late 1960s, their work has persistently taken a provocative, often uncomfortable look at both their own lives and the life of the city that continues to inspire their art - London.
Alan is invited into their East End home, where the couple have lived together for four decades, for an intimate look into their processes and what is the most unique, productive and long-standing partnership in contemporary art.

They are indeed extraordinary. They stick in your mind somehow - they've sure stuck in mine. It is fantastic how they stay in character, and it's amazing how they combine being so outragous and controlled and gentlemanly at the same time.
Thank-you Gilbert and George for standing in the face of adversity and what you believe in x
The Morecambe and Wise of British art.
30 or so years ago i was a budding graphic artist living in the east end traveling into covent garden. One day i got on one of the old style underground trains, the type with bench seats (enough for 3) facing each other with glass panels separating you from the next row. I sat down, looked up and there, sitting bolt upright was George. Perfectly dressed hands on knees. We faced each other. No one shared the seats, it was just George and me. I felt like i was in some kind of surreal art installation. For those few minutes i was so shocked i said nothing. I just enjoyed the moment. Wish i had said hello. Next to opening Tower Bridge once, this was one of those special London moments I will never forget.
Thanks for sharing it, a very comprehensive view into G&G world.
I have been a fan for many decades.
Never liked them but the more I listen to them the more intrigued I am by their eccentricity, art, performance and image.
At the beginning when they raise the sash window to welcome Alan yentob into there abode .I'm drawn to the number of panes of glass in the frame that seem very reminiscent of there works of art
Yea I agree, you can also see this style start to creep in from their early work 'Dead boards & Dusty Corners' piece featured at 18:33
Brilliant! I can leave a comment ... A couple of iron fists in velvet gloves! All these years and barely a glance sideways
Great documentary
Someone on the production team had excellent taste in music
IKR? Durutti Column!
superb
I went to see if I could get that piece (before I saw it) like 7 years after it was made and it was only up for 48 hours. I'm disappointed :(
Supreme (Week 4) 🔥🔥🔥
It's only the media (especially art critics who are as about useful as a chocolate teapot) and the Establishment that don't get Gilbert and George. The general public are never given the credit for having an understanding of their art or art in general.
would be great if this was replayed some point on tv. would be great to see a HQ version! i really want to read their index of contact sheets!
I completely agree, I've tried to find a HD version of this programme for a few years off and on, but I've never been able to find any other version (360p).
The show was first aired back in May of 2007 and I believe, it then came out on DVD like many of the other 'Imagine...' programmes in the series.
If you do ever manage to find a different copy, out there on your travels please let me know and I'll upload it.
@@_RPJ_ it's getting a replay tonight mate! 14.5.23. 10.35pm. bbc4!
That's amazing, thanks for letting me know! I'll get on securing that copy this evening and I'll get it uploaded here. Their contact sheets and other small details are actually readable now
@@_RPJ_ that was my main thing too! brilliant thanks so much ill have a rewatch when am back in front of a bigger screen!
Dave Stewart and any Annie Lennox were inspired by G&G when starting And developing a direction for the Eurythmics.
It was used on jam aswell
Nothing else matters I live with it,
What's the music at the start? I'd hazard a guess at The Future Sound of London, Autechre or Orbital, but I bet none of those are right!
All good guesses, but I believe the song you're after is #1 - Aphex Twin
@@_RPJ_ I thought it was too laid back for Mr James, so I dismissed it. Thank you.
where is mr. Hanky ?!
Supreme brought me here
Does anyone know what the music is called at the beginning of this show?
You too?! My best guesses are either Future Sound of London, Autechre or Orbital, but I'm probably wrong! I know the tune too, but can't place it.
Hey guys, are you talking about the opening 50 odd seconds? If so its: #1 - Aphex Twin
37:19 - That paint has one part "Special water"
hmmm
❤️
Something very sad about the end
I occasionally enjoy a serving of lightly steamed carrots.
This is so funny because G&G are describing exactly the kind of middle-class art snob that Alan Yentob IS. Look at him aghast that George has a hat made of vintage beaver. The beaver has been dead a long long time. Its a waste not to use its pelt.
100%. What's your opinion of Nick Serota?
@@henrydemonfreid1985 I don't know... I mean the whole world of art is a complete farce isn't it? At the same time I believe that art is whatever the artist says is art. I don't think you have to be a painter to be an artist... But I do think a lot has been lost from art students not being taught basic drawing skills. I visited the Tate many times during Serotas reign and always enjoyed it. I remember liking his reaction to the Stuckist portrait of him... But thinking it was probably carefully rehearsed.
I did a short g & g impression vid just the other day, Tuesday I think it was ~ ruclips.net/video/3tWlkQ8Vv2U/видео.html
the creepiest
Depressing, foul and contemptuous!
Don't forget to add completely uncompromising to that list too.
25:35 - 27:13 sums that up perfectly.
@@_RPJ_ shit efcbetter not expand o that,or I'll be algorithm ed again, the pipe
overprized crap
Look again ... they’re totally uncompromising and as hard as it gets ...
