  • "How would you like to sketch the Camino Inglés," said my Spanish colleague Gemma, "and be filmed doing it for Spanish telly?" She didn't need to ask me twice. I was thrilled at the prospect, and so back in August of 2021 I went out to Santiago de Compostela during the dying days of the pandemic.
I spent a week in the nicest towns, populated by sone of the most laid-back types you'll ever meet. The company was wonderful, in the form of Gemma, another artist called Maru Godas, her fabulous fella Ramón and Gemma's friend Maria. We got on great, even though I probably missed a few jokes...
I hope you enjoy the resulting work. It was used by the Spanish government to promote local tourism, and I hope it got them results, because they were very generous to me. (Go there. Just saying.)
I did this video in Spanish too, but it didn't flow as well as I would have liked...I'll try again. And then once more in French, just so the Spanish get value out of me!
Let me know your thoughts...is the Camino Inglés a place you'd like to visit? I want to go back - but next time with a rucksack rather than a sketchbook...

Lovely. We walked the Camino Frances in 37 days Sep-Oct of 2022. I sketched and journaled a little along the Way, but could not slow down enough to stop, or drag myself away from our daily chores, tending to our blisters, washing clothes, eating menus del dia and the amazing vino with our newly formed pilgrim family. Even though we stopped each night in a different village or city, it just wasn't our focus for me to sketch. I now dream of going back with the intent of sketching. I've heard say that a walking pilgrimage is slow tourism, which would rattle the purists who fancy being peregrinos over "tourgrinos". I can't imagine anything more magical and slower than a walking & sketching tour across Northern Spain. Thanks so much for bringing a fond tear to my eye, taking me back with your sketches and description of Santiago de Compostela.

Ah Lance, that’s so nice of you. Yes, I totally get it, it’s (usually) not possible to sketch in company unless the other person is doing their own thing…never happens in my case! So the fact that I don’t have a formal job (or, my time is my own) means I get a lot done. But there’d be war if I sketched in family company!
