I believe the family issues. I run away with my parents. Since I was +13 years old. Now, I stay in Seattle and never go back Taiwan to see the family. Taiwan father always hits the kids while the kids in small. Please understand this children abuse law issues at Taiwan. A lot poor kids issues by abuse their father. And mother
After I graduated from college, I never asked for money from my family. I have always been self-sufficient. Now I'm used to it and feel very free. I like what Cui Jian said in his lyrics, "People should live happily and independently."
WOW... I am in awe. I can't imagine. My wife already started a 529 plan and it never crossed our mind to stop supporting our son financially while he is in school.
My parent support me while I am in university. It's the same as all chinese parents.Parents want to give their all love to their children.Even if children is too older,Chinese parents always treat them like children.
Traditional Chinese parents like us handle things differently from most American parents. My wife and I were both salaried employees and we were not even close to being rich. But we still very willingly paid everything for our daughter's education (Ivy League college tuitions, round-trip travel across the country three times a year, and of course room and board plus a brand new SUV, etc.), college and medical school. Of course this is partially because she is an only child and we love her very much. But we saw no other way of handling this. We decided not to have a 2nd child because of her and we had no regret doing so. Is it wise? I don't know but seeing her well-established as an adult with a very happy family, I am very happy as a father.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I can identify with a lot of what you've said. I too, left home at 18 for Uni. It was like the 1920's great depression, budget-wise, while at the same time experiencing the joys of new found freedom :) ah! Good times.
All meant for a reason. Just be kind to yourself. As an introvert, i find traveling to be quite fun. Enjoy short trips in asia just to get away from work.
Although I am Taiwanese, your experience is very similar to mine. When I was a child, due to poverty, I worked harder than others in the process of growing up, and now I have achieved a small success with an annual salary of over NTD 3 million .
This makes me think of my first job when I was eighteen. That was the start of my independence. That might seem strange, but it's all because of my love for coding. I left high school to do software development work.
I am glad my son finished his degree in 3 years come back home and started his job this May nearby. I gave him all the freedom he wants even he stay at home, just try to help him save some money, rent a decent place to live in Bay Area is too expensive now.
I believe the situation is changing because the prices of essential items like rent and food have become unaffordable. Some people work full-time and still can’t earn enough to cover their expenses. How can we expect an 18-year-old to make enough money while being a full-time student?
I am from China. I left my hometown at the age of 23 to be independent. The reason is that it is difficult for self-taught university graduates in my hometown to find jobs. My first love broke up with me because of my poor family conditions. Later, I moved from a large city in inland China to the coastal areas and worked in European and American companies for 20 years. I started a family and built a career. But now it is difficult for middle-aged unemployed to find jobs.
You may feel like home is the anchor in your storm, but leaving may well save you from drowning and set off on your exploration journey of llfe... You only live ONCE. But if you do it right...ONCE is enough.
When I studied in MN USA during 1992. Most of family still support their kid, even they study in college. Only few of them kick out by their parent by the age of 18.

I think it varies from family to family. My family doesn't care if I move or stay with in our family house--they're more open-minded about that. While other families, if parents set expectations, they'll want kids to move out by a certain age or situation, or the kids want to move out to experience stuff on their own. I personally like living alone when the rest of my family is on vacation or living elsewhere. Like you said, I'm free to do anything I want when I'm alone and prefer it that way.
I really wanted to go to college, but my English scores in exams were less than 10 out of 100. As a result, I had no choice but to start working. I didn't move out until I was 21. I paid a small amount of "rent" while still living at my parent's house after I graduated highschool. At 21, I needed to finally get out on my own, because I felt like a kid still. It's nice to see my parents on the weekends, rather than still living under their roof all the time. 🤣

I randomly came across your channel, and just wanted to say:
Keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible, you’re awesome 😎.

It's a different kind of blessing. Look at how well you are doing right now. Bless you!
It is really the same here in China. Like your speed of talking. I can easily follow without looking into the words on the screen.
