  • I wanted to give a simple step by step on how to build your own fence. This is a 3 part series that will help outline the best way to achieve a strong fence, with the right type and size of dimensional lumber.

    Probably the most legit fence build tutorial/how-to I've found on youtube yet.

    So high up off the ground.. no pets huh? Looks great! Easy caps, that’s what I came looking for. 🤜🏾🤛🏼

    Great series. Its a great idea to use that T jig to space the boards evenly from one to the next, but what happens at the posts? Like what if I start at one post and when I get to the end of that section at the next post it's off and I either can't fit another board there, or the gap is too big that it looks funny? Do the posts need to super exact in their spacing to begin with or would you ever cut a board length-wise to make it thinner if need be?

      100% we rip the boards and if you like symmetry, start dead centre and split left to right then you'll have 2 even end boards.

      @@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer Thank you so much! I'm confident I can do this now. Seriously the best how-to on all of youtube.

    Best video I've found on this build. I see you have big gaps at the bottom because of uneven yard. I've seen someone run the boards down to different lengths at the bottom to fill those uneven gaps, which is important if you have a dog. Do you ever do that? Recommended?

      Thanks! And yes I have a large dog. What we often do after is take the posthole dirt and make a burm to push water away from the fence line and help reduce the chances of thaw heave.

    When building a fence this style, it seems to allow a lot of gap underneath the fence in some areas? How to avoid this? Seems not good for pets.

      You can set the bottom rails parallel to the ground and cut all bottoms of fence boards to match the angle. Plus you can add a lateral board for animals if needed.

    Isn't there potential for water to rest upon the topcap after it rains, leading to wood rot? Or does it quickly evaporate when the weather improves?

      Did you watch part 3? I have post caps on, always note to cap posts as they do exactly as you're asking. The increase the splitting of the post and create another factor to twist the lumber. 👍

    Good Video Chris.....what is the spacing between the fence boards? I am looking at building a tight shadow box, is a gap of 1.5 " too narrow to allow wind pass through?

      The grade was built up after to close the distance. Helps push water away from posts too 😉

    Do you put panels facing your yard or your neighbors yard? I'm paying so I would want panels facing my yard.

    • @HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
      @HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer  3 года назад

      Talk to the neighbors and see if they'll pay half and decide. I'd do both sides in my opinion. Looks better and stronger.

      @@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer my neighbor is a complete bum, it was his fence that fell down in my yard, I had a 30 ft broken peice in my backyard for a month . I finally got a chain saw and cut it up and threw it away. I thought he was gonna fix it but never did. He came over to complain after that my dog went in his yard

      @@wereverywhere2.037 some neighbours suck. This is a hard case to deal with. You could potentially let the dog keep pooping in his yard until he agrees to at least pay half...lol
