Outerloper: In desperate need of a bed! (Outdoor survival only)

- Surviving outdoors is hard, and not having a bedroll makes it harder! With a hammer in hand, can I make it to a forge? Having a bow would make it a lot easier.
Outerloper is a challenge where you play interloper, but cannot go indoors where there is warmth, loot and cabin fever. How you define "outdoors" is a bit up to each player.

imagine if we could have a custom setting for outerloper where you get cabin fever the moment you step inside a building
so you become so claustrophobic that being in door at all makes you instantly insane 😂
The BRR maintenance shed exterior room is the weirdest one. No loading screen, but it's warm, and NO cabin fever. It also has a computer, so you can check emails during an aurora.
Cars are a great place to store things in this run. You can store things in the trunks and glove boxes, and use them as bases in that sense.
Good idea
Never having cabin fever as a variable is a cool bonus ... Outerloper run looking great, Zak! -- thanks for the creation and what you do. And early cheers to 20k!
Hello Zak. I always look forward to your let's play from the game The Long Dark, because in your presentation the game is calming but also exciting. Keep it up. Thanks.
I am waiting on episode 5 like a crack head, waiting on the next unsuspecting person entering the alleyway.
When it's coming?
@@MaratzGamer I ain't got no idea, but if he don't push it out, I will end up making a trap. Dirty John is going to get money for his next fix, one way or another.
I feel for you brother.

@@JebBushAintSoBad I would if I could. But I am currently struggling due to having returned to studying.
I simply don't have the financial breathing room to pay a monthly fee for early access.
What I can do is write "witty" messages in the comment section and hopefully bring a smile to someones day, while we all wait.
On the hardest difficulty of the challenge the characters spawn dead, meant for players who doesn't have the time to play and enjoy the game, so they can see the "you fell into the long dark" screen and think; "I did what I could on the hardest difficulty ;)
Learned my lesson about weather in my second game. It was only Voyageur and only mountain home, so it was quite embarrassing. But it's how you learn patience, right? Found a deer carcass and didn't have knife. Decided to go for the whole works at an hour forty two. Hit "harvest" and immediately heard the weather turn bad. Thought "Hell it isn't even two hours."......I now share a snowy bank in Milton with a deer carcass
Since the update, I found a bedroll outside Carter Hydro Dam inside one of the pipes. It was the ones by the stairs near the path from the winding river to the dam. Only saw it once, but that’s another place it can spawn outdoors
Found it there aswell
Thanks Zak! What about a "sleeping in my car" challenge? 😉🚙
It just dawned on me after playing the game for a long time.
What are the bears doing being out and about when it’s winter? They should be in hibernation.
I get that the game isn’t going for realism with its animals. There are plenty of other examples of that.
But brown bears being out in winter… I can’t believe I took me this long to realise how little sense that made.
But the game is also set in year round winter. So maybe in a alternate universe they are a long gone cousin of polar bears, and continue to move around and use up lots of calories in the snow and cold, because they don’t have much other options.
Or the game devs just wanted a fun big tanky enemy that was a bit different then the wolves. And designed something that was fun and worked well for a balanced experience.
Going hunting for bear pelts and meat, by finding a bear lair with a sleeping bear. Provably wouldn’t be as fun.
The bears are out, and all the animals act different than they normally would because of the geomagnetic incident that caused MacKenzie to crash in the first place. It's all written down somewhere. I just don't remember where.
The animals all act differet due to the geomagnetic event, so they are not meant to be realistic. The game has some realism in it but is not meant to reflect real life :) Btw it is a black bear
You have had some good luck with the loot, enjoying this series 🙂 Jo.C.
3:02:47 This snow shelter in FM is bugged, I had exactly same situation, it's like 10 or even more at the same place, do not try to enter those after you dismantled first one, it will get you under the map and you can not exit and had to reload!!! What's even weirder, after I dismantled first batch (like 4-5?, all of them had different quality state) and I thought the site was cleared, after I've come back there some time later there was next 5, and I am not 100% sure but I think it happened for a third time also and I think I get rid of all of them this time. Also the "secret" rock cache near the bear den is bugged, for me it was doubled, after I dismantled the cache (I wanted rocks) there was second one in the same place with 2nd set of a loot.
I've hit the same Snow Shelter bug in a few places, after the Far Territory released. RE: getting trapped in it, if you're careful, it's sometimes possible to get out. The hit box for exiting the Shelter is not in it's usual place.
They should add a mechanic to the game in which you can siphon gasoline from the tank off the car and use it as accelerant. And if you build a fire too close to a car that you haven’t siphoned, you might blow up.
Outerloper but you can only eat rabbits. That would be entertaining to watch.
Don't forget to reload your lantern before you go on another journey!
I attempted to go down into the Ravine today on my 150 day run, my record, and tried to billy goat it... 5 mins later you got to the Ravine and warned about insta-deaths. AGHHHH
2:59:43 I am starting to think Zak really just wants to play a challenge called punloper
I am laying in my warm indoors bed watching this. 🐱
I started this series last night when I was up not feeling great. I like your version of outerloper😊.
Another excellent video.
Hi Zak. In ML you can use the lookout. IT isnt an Indoor Location. Greetings from Germany.
You get a warmth bonus and cabin fever from it, so it counts as indoors in this challenge. Hello to Germany :)
3:00:00 You can one shot a bear with a revolver, however odds are pretty slim, while I was grinding revolver skill on lower difficulty (for "all LV5 skill" achievement) I tend to one shot like every ~20 bears. First one was a shot on sleeping one (I know, I know, it sounds horrible), at first I thought that the only case you can do it, but it happened again on a one which was awake, and than again, so it's absolutely feasible. All of those was a head shots, so I don't know if you can do it while hitting other parts.
You need a high enough revolver crit rate for that to happen, which I think requires level 3 or higher just to have a chance in the case of a bear. Don't bother trying on Moose, though. Would need insane luck for a one-shot on those walking tanks.
Love your videos.
Thanks Zak! This is my favorite run so far!
I’m late to this game but love it I’ve been lost in ash canyon and black rock and I walked in a giant circle for 3 days lol I can’t get out lmao love the content glad I found ya
There are maps on the web, maybe they help you
Maps kinda ruin the game, but they do make it a lot more playable
A nice thing to play this way would be in the settings to set it to permanent cabin fever so u can never really rest in a place that is interior. Like u say tho anyone can play however one wants to play. Just have fun here is the point. This game is so great.
quite impressed that i survived 2 days in outerloper challenge 😂
Show off
As CHW / DP are 2 of my favorite regions, let me tell ya, the cars there, have some of the most wind-protected fire areas in all of great bear.
In the connector between CHW and DP, there's a car beside a large fallen tree that you can use as a windblock as well as a still standing tree.
It's not a perfect windblock, but I'd say 4/5 times I put a 10+ hour fire there, I get to use most or all of it.
In CHW itself there's a car that often has a flare inside, that is also behind a couple hills that act as a reasonable windbreak, though it's nowhere near as safe as the aforementioned one.
Not sure if a bed can spawn in The Arch cave in the connector.
Your voice is Gold.
Thanks for all the player support.
Thanks for another great video Zak! Before the DLC there was a guaranteed bedroll spawn in Pleasant Valley too. It would spawn in one of two places. Misty Falls cave behind the waterfall (which wouldn’t work for outerloper) and the other spot was the cave over by Thompson’s crossing which is a story mode side mission cave.
Patiently waiting for the next episode of Outerloper. Love this series :)
Don't think I have it in me to do an outerloper despite how fun it looks, but when you mentioned indoor hours, I thought of one I'm gonna try: figure up some limit to that stat and don't go over. Let's me get some indoors loot to survive and I get to do tedious planning
this is my fav series so far
I think, if the devs of TLD could hear me. I would say....make loot in interloper not be so rare...just make it less valuable. it's soooo.....disenheartening, when you open up dozens of backpacks, and corpses, and containers of all kinds. and they're all empty! maybe have a single piece of cloth,... a stick. SOMETHING that is of some small tiny worth, maybe add some new food items, that are only like 50-200 calories, but are common, like "you found 3 oreo cookies."
I think that'd be more encouraging to keep playing, keep looking when you know you'll probably find SOMETHING even if it's a big handful of cloths lint...that you could turn into a tinderplug, at least...it's something, right?
It is kinda unrealistic that all these containers would be mostly empty. But maybe not - perhaps in the Interloper universe, civilisations broke down globally and then humans had to resort to extreme looting to survive. So you're one of the last survivors, picking up the scraps other people missed.
@@davidcarter4454 that's, kinda what I'm thinking, like...the VALUABLE stuff is at the same rarity, but there's still...a tinder plug, old newspaper, scrap cloth in there...the stuff that's so common everyone else left it behind...and you probably will too! THAT feels more realistic, and...from a game mechanics, feels a little better tahn EMPTY empty EMPTY over and over. from balancing it's "junk JUNK junk" instead...but still...I think that's a worth while change.
Hi Zak, great to see you in good shape during this challenge, outerloper is on my to do list but I don't think I'm ready yet. So far I'm about 20 days into Intercoper run but find it quite hard with limited resources. Still didn't find maple... Best of luck with your run!
My current interloper run was over 50 days without a bedroll. DP spawn, cleared all likely spots there as well as coastal highway, PV, WR, Ravine, TW mountain cabin, and most of mystery lake. Finally found it in the hunters blind in ML on day 52. My first bow was almost ruined before I found it. If it wasn't there, I was planning on going to summit with just snowshelters. Sometimes you just roll with the punches.
Day 78 for me in Forsaken Airfield. By then I'd already made the bear bedroll. The loot update seems to have made it rarer. About 120 days in I found another one close to my spawn point in DP. It was hidden in the lower level of Hibernia in that weird corner area where you have to break down the crates to get to.
Yay!
You can also find a bedroll outside the dam, in the winding river side. It's located inside the tubes on the lower level
Hello Zak
Hey Zak one of my rules is 25 or 50 day gate- so every new region I have to spend 25 or 50 days in the region before I can progress. so starter 25 days before I can move , in hard mode its 50 days. it makes you really appreciate each map. Oh I'm stalker mode
It is a great way to learn the maps, for sure :)
I believe the 'old bear' cave on mystery lake is a spawn point for lower difficulties so I would guess It will probably never become a bear spawn in normal survival.
can you scrap all those metal cans for scrap? it'd be neat if it could be scrapped but you need like 3 cans to make one of the generic scrapmetal, for balancing.
Hi Zak, really enjoy your vids, i would like to know what has happened to the series "Road to 500 days" last one i watched was part 4, would like to see more of that series. Can you let us know if you're continuing that series please?
Road to 500 has approx. weekly releases near weekends :)
@@Zaknafein Thanks much appreciated, look forward to the next one, cheers. 🤗
I've been holding back ,but I want to include my own opinion on what outerloper should be. I would allow connecting locations (i.e. dam, caves, mines) , but you may only loot the path that takes you directly to the other side; no side passages or rooms. Also you may only loot those areas allowed while you are passing through, not going in then coming back out the way you entered. As far as beds within, that is more up to debate. In an emergency, yes but under the same restrictions as looting. If a cave has no other outlet AND has a loading screen or the outlet is in the same region, those are forbidden.
Now, imagine combining this with your own dead world version. OMG that would be a nightmare.
Ciao zak, i actually killed a bear in one revolver shot. i was in pv, at night, road to disagreement point, just before the bridge, cornered over a boulder, crouching, could only see the bear's breath. it was like a desperate move but it worked. maybe, because the bear wasn't aggressive yet. it was just smelling me and getting closer. but unaware...
In my current run TWM starter. I found a rifle, 5 shots. 1 shot to kill a bear, 3 shots into moose and 1 miss. Now day 15 and not enough arrows my choice is Pleasant or Blackrock for 25 days... Food is borderline, skills are not there
Hey Zak, fairly recent new viewer to your long dark content and it's always v good.
As you seem to like making interloper a bit more difficult for yourself maybe you should do an interloper run but you cannot pick up or use sticks as they are the majority of fire fuel on interloper and see how it changes the way you play
Thank you for the suggestion and welcome to the channel :)
Have you actually tried that? Interloper without sticks? That might be impossible unless you allow scrub bushes and branches, but even then. I think in a true survival situation the hardest thing would be finding shelter and food - like actually knowing where you were in the world. In TLD we all know the maps now, so the only way to simulate this lost feeling again would be to have random maps - that would be an awesome addition I think. Other than that new players can chose not to look at the great maps that other players like stmSanta has produced.
I watch your videos on my PlayStation and I don’t have my RUclips account on there, so I thought damn I should give you a subscription for the great content.
thanks for the video 🙂🙃🙂🙃
You know it occurs to me, there is no option to make bone needles and hooks from bones in this game, which is weird because that's what people used LONG before metal hooks became a thing. I know bones aren't a thing in this game aside from marking bear caves, but that's still a missed opportunity IMO.
If I write a kids book will u narrate it? Promise to include Methuselah in it and randathor can do that part 😊
Plane crash in Milton should have a lots of scrap
i Know another RUclipsr that killed a moose with one shot revolver !!! he was runnin away and turned and shot (no ADS) Moose down
Heyy Zak, new subscriber here. Really love the Outerloper series. Will this series continue with more episodes? Thank you for the quality content
Hi. Thank you! I will see if I make Part 3, depending on interest. Could also be an idea to do the run again when the DLC is completed.
@@Zaknafein Thanks for the reply! That'll be great too. Would love to see part 3, if not a new series on Outerloper with the new additions. Started watching the Torchless Craftman too which is also great. Please keep up the good work Zak, really love your channel!
Please make outiloper a playlist...good job.
Once I get a Part 3, I will :)
I have found the bedroll twice in the yellow railcar at the train loading area near the dam in ML. This has been on interloper mode, so it's another place worth checking!
Hello Zak, I have heard you could turn on the heated seats in the cars during the auroras. Is it true?
Yes but only in Keepers Pass. This feature has been removed last I checked, as it wasnt intended yet :)
That bear at 00:50 was on me today i barely made it out from that bear
I don't normally play interloper, but isn't there a bedroll in the freight car in FM? I usually find one there in Stalker, I think.
It can be, but is not a common spawn
Trapperbed will be cool. 5 Wood and 50 Sticks to bild a bed that give +1 C Temperatur Bonus.
Just starting the video, is this the part 2 of the intercoper run you started a week or so ago?
Outercoper :)
Yes.
Outerloper yes :)
personally I don't find this challenge as interesting as your other videos but still gonna watch it!
What if you light four fires surrounding the car? 🧐
Edit: 100th comment again!! Woot
I am a genius
01:05:00 - {Nervously checks how much time is left in the video...}
Are snow shelters allowed?
They should be.. no cabin fever risk, no real loading screen with save.. but I'll bet he forgets because he normally doesn't use them due to the upkeep to repair them.
Yes but they are not worth it. It costs too much cloth and outdoors only there is very little cloth to find.
If you have a bedroll and you sleep in a car, do you get additional warmth bonus?
No, they dont stack as far as I know
ever map has cars but ash cayon and hush river vally. Yes everyone Muskeg has a car it has derailed train car that does same as a car. do yes there is cave normal outside cave as i like call them ever map also. Zak knows what he talking about why i love his serious after 1100 hpurs game play i still learn something new lol
Thanks :) The train car in FM has no bedroll, so not quite the same as a car. CH has no caves, except the mines. TWM has no cars either :)
Also Zak not sure if i missed u saying but u can not go in to house building ect to lot or can u. Just asking cause i didnt hear that rule. If so dam should have alot tool stuff
@@Zaknafein CH cave wish I was counting the fishing huts as kind caves. And TWM the scatter air plane part can be used also. Yeah I did forget TWM had no cars lol. But it does have caves and scatter debris that u can crawl in to. Well some of it u can
Some times I mean someeeee times there a bedroll in train car in FM u can pick up. If not use to scrap for cloth
@@loedtree01 I understand :) But when we say "cars" and "caves" here we mean those exact things, not things like that. There are plenty of exceptions. But I understand what you mean.
And no, you cannot go inside to loot. You can of course do that on your run, though. The rules can be changed how you see fit :)
3:03:10 i ve got a 7 multiplier on one piece of coal. Clicked it 7 times befor it disappear.
Oh yeah this is kind of a BS cause is there even a place where a bedroll will spawn in the outside? I mean the closest bedroll is probably the crafted one, and that would take ingame week or so to get.
There are a few outdoor ones.
In Bleak Inlet one is guaranteed in the cave by the coast island.
In Mystery Lake you can find one in a blind or train cart. In Winding river there can be one in the tubes or the cave.
In Coastal Highway there can be one in a fishing hut.
In Hushed River Valley one is guaranteed in the ice caves, if you permit them.
There can also be one in Scruffys cave in Desolation Point.
So yeah, there are quite a few :)
@@Zaknafein Oh crap I also juts realized, how are you gonna cure hides and guts if you cant go inside? Also I assume transitional caves are interiors so I guess some areas are offlimits?
@@Galejro You can cure hides in open caves. Transitional caves are optional. For me its okay, others ban them.
You are really reduced on scrap metal. Is there outdoor metal you can harvest? I don’t think so
There's the shelving in Spence's farm. Also Carter Dam outside areas I think. Probably other places where there are ruined structures
